1. Do not be misled by the title. This is more a detailed encyclopedia of glass than a simple dictionary, with many in depth articles covering the history, art and technology of glass working.

   All forms of glass craft are represented, including blowing, lamp work, stained glass, etching and engraving. Raw materials, chemicals, tools and techniques for industrial and artistic uses are described.

   Styles & important historical pieces are also covered. The book is well illustrated with b/w photos & diagrams. Two sections of color plates showcase some beautiful & unusual artistic pieces in a wide variety of techniques.

   Lists of periodicals, suppliers, societies, schools and museums provide a great source for further information. This is a complete and essential reference for anyone interested in glass.

1. I'm not as pleased with this book as I thought I would be. The projects are unusual, quick to do, but not the type of projects I prefer. I rated it low because of the slow arrival. I was notified of shipping on 3/14, but it wasn't delivered until today, 4/11. All other items ordered through Amazon arrived on time, or much sooner than expected. This is the only time I have been dissatisfied with the service.

1. This book was assigned for a required graduate seminar in art history and studio arts. Discussion of the professionalization of the fine art degree through university art education systems results in a glut of MFA artists and terminal MA art history graduates with degrees that do not hold equalavancy to the Ph.D. in the competitive realm of academia. By the time we read this in the final semesters of the degree curriculuum, everyone wanted to change majors but it was too late. Try reading at the BA level before spending thousands of dollars on a graduate degree.

This is the best book I have ever seen on the subject and I am thrilled to have it.

1. I have read most of the books on Stanley Spencer. This book has the most plates and an in depth discussion of the work and life of Sir Stanley. Another book I would like is : the sketchbooks of Stanley Spencer. His drawings are not slick they are a bit crude and naive by art school standards He was a student of Tonks . Philip Evergood also studied with Tonks and his drawings are similar. They have a childlike naivete that I like.



2. This is an excellent survey of the work of the English painter Stanley Spencer.It contains work from the early periods of his life that you rarely have an opportunity to see. There is a very in depth and critical veiw into the life of this great artist. The reproductions of the work are almost all in color and of high quality. This is a book that clearly shows that Spencer was that English artist who has been the inspiration of many English artist who followed him. The range of his work is truly exceptional from the religious to the nude studies and portraits of family. This is the Book that is a must to have if you are looking at figurative painting in the 20th century. It is expansive and completely beautiful.

1. The Crucifixion in Irish Art presents 50 examples, from 800AD to the 20th century. A full page photograph faces a single page of text, for each. Most are black and white photographs with four or five color plates depicting stained glass representations and contemporary oils. Yet so much in such a small book! The introduction places the art works in Irish history from the Celts on to today. The development of the crucifix as art is emphasized, as one is compared with the following. It was my good luck to stumble on this volume in Ireland and it inspired much of my trip as I plugged through fields, disturbing cattle, to locate some of the original crucifixes in the book.
