1 comments about Speaking Out: Storytelling and Creative Drama for Children.

  1. Zipes' book provides a good introduction to various genres of storytelling. What is especially interesting about this book is that he provides a description of a program in which he uses storytelling as a way of teaching within Minneapolis schools. It's a fine documentation of a creative and innovative project which could be used in other educational settings. The book offers practical resources by providing texts to various stories and numerous activities for integrating storytelling into lessons on language arts and drama. These activities can be used in a range of classrooms, and they can be adapted for use in numerous settings. The book has a fine bibliography of resources for finding numerous stories for use in schools, and a good bibliography on relevant scholarship. Of particular interest is his discussion of wider implications of using this type of teaching in an educational climate that stresses standardized testing over creative teaching, and some of the ideas could be useful to counteract these stiffling trends in education. One limitation with this book, however, is its limited treatment of ways to integrate storytelling into curricula as educators will need to be convinced that this type of teaching is relevant and useful to their current situations.

3 comments about Tiki Art Now!: A Volcanic Eruption of Art.

  1. This book is a collection of Tiki art from a sunny tropical art exhibit to smashingly hit foggy San Francisco. An amazing turn out was observed that night, where the crowds were spilling into the streets, and there was a line of people waiting for people to exit before they could be let in. There is a variety of levels of art in this book, where all aspire to share their love for the Tiki God. There are no Johnny come latelys to join the love of tropical drinks, tropical breezes and a Tiki God to admire. This is a good book to complete your collection of Tiki books.

  2. Otto is no johnny-come-lately trying to profit off the Tiki craze--he sparked the Tiki revival 10 years ago, when he started "Tiki News." Many of us first learned that others were also into Tiki from that publication, which also introduced us to the Tiki work of Shag and others.

This is a great survey of newer Tiki art and is highly recommended.

  3. This is a small book. I expected more and have to say I was very dissapointed. While there is some good art from some good artists in this book, there is alot of amateur tiki art that is not worthy and you have to wonder why it is even in the book. What is the criteria for the tiki art in this book? There seems to be none, and frankly this book seems like a weak attempt to profit off the latest tiki craze. I do not recommend it to anyone. Compared to the other tiki books in my collection, this book leaves you very flat.

2 comments about The Cambridge Illustrated History of Prehistoric Art (Cambridge Illustrated Histories).

  1. Few scholars could deign to undertake a survey of the world's prehistoric art, but Bahn is well chosen. He has experienced a breadth of world rock art equaled by few others. But, it is his command of history and literature that distinguish this book. The first 70 pages define the study of prehistoric art and survey the history of rock art research on each continent. For example, Chinese philosopher Han Fei produced the earliest written account about 2,300 years ago (much of the world's prehistoric art is younger than this). Modern scholars, on the other hand, only "discovered" Chinese rock art about 1950. Two-thirds of the book is devoted to Art on Rocks and Walls, rock art. Bahn leads the reader through the amazing array of rock art around the world and through time, skipping from place-to-place, style-to-style, and culture-to-culture while holding the reader's interest. He takes the reader through the science of dating and style. He turns to literal interpretations of vulvas and sex, human portraiture, zoophilia, and birth. Violence and warfare, sound and music, humor-the vast array of human experiences are revealed in his survey of rock art through the art itself. The reader learns not so much about the art of any one people as about how humans see and experience the world. Bahn's volume on prehistoric art is not the final word on the subject, but it is a valuable contribution to the literature. His survey of works predating 1900 alone makes this book and invaluable addition to one's library.

  2. This is a lovely book, but is so politically correct that it is obnoxious. The primitive art of Australian aborigines, for example, is given as much, if not more, coverage than that of Europe and the Middle East. There is too much emphasis on the peripheral in a misguided attempt to be "fair," with a corresponding reduction in coverage for the prehistoric art of peoples who eventually created civilizations.

5 comments about Barlowe's Inferno.

  1. When I saw this book and seen the reviews, I figured that it was just going to be "cool". Then when I finally got this in the mail I was completely overwhelmed by the imaginative visions that Barlowe puts into each of the paintings. Each picture is filled with detail and rich color. The captions get really in depth with what the picture stands for and which Demon is shown and when you think about it, it can be fairly creepy if this is what Hell was really like. Barlowe talks about making his way into the lowest reaches of Hell and bringing back the images to share with the world. The artwork in this book will completely blow you away.

  2. This collection is basically Barlowe's visual interpretation of Dante's Inferno from The Divine Comedy. Each painting has a page of description pointing out the purpose and reason for every detail in the image. From a tortorous picture of Lillith, to the haunting painting of a minor demon riding on the backs of several tortoured souls held together with muck, they are each fascinating to examine. Like Dali and other fantastical artists, one can look at these paintings and see something new every time. The color work is fantastic, and in some paintings actually appears to be digital photography until one looks closer. A ver well-thought-out project, it is pleasing to see another side of Barlowe's intelligent work.

  3. The book was not as good as I thought it was going to be. When I read certain passages of it at the bookstore I thought it was going to be a fictional narrative of a doomed person's experience in Hell. Instead it was more of an artists explanation about his paintings. The book still drew me in and made me think and feel about what Hell might be like. For this reason, the books ability to make me seriously think about Hell in a literal sense, I will give it four stars.

  4. Wayne Barlowe has long been one of my favorite artists, up there with Bekinski and Giger. He has a real talent for pulling the viewer into his world, so that we can almost smell the sulfur. This and its companion piece Brushfire are my (current) favorite art volumes, as I seem to be in a very hellish phase right now. But even when I'm not feeling hellish, I'm in awe of Mr. Barlowe's talent. I love the texture of the worlds and characters, the deep, roaring, ash-filled atmosphere of the environs of hell he portrays. I am always inspired by his work.

  5. Normally I am reserved in my reviews but this one stands out as an entity that deserves high praise. I had been researching visions of Hell for some years when this book came out. It was an exquisite find as the author's vision was finely detailed and provided a wealth of information. His Hell is different yet similar to Dore's vision which appealed to me. It is as if he took Dore's vision and placed his own ideas and concepts on top of Gustave's.

This is highly recommended. The pictures are stunning and the text adds some nice thought as well. One reviewer wrote that he thought the souls looked to much like statuary and while I do agree with that criticism it is a minor quibble and is not always the case.

1 comments about Seeing the Insane.

  1. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this book - both for its artwork and for the descriptive text and content. The fact that it is in black and white does not detract in any way, shape or form from the enjoyment of browsing through its pages. It has become one of my favorite books that I recommend to others with a diversity of interests - mental states, the architecture and design of asylums and sanitariums, the questionable diagnoses and treatments of mental illness through the ages, the abuse and exploitation of vulnerability, authentic facial expressions of great terror, pain and suffering, and the misguided views and prejudice of various historical periods. It even makes a fine coffee table book for those of us that are a little out of the ordinary.
