5 comments about Collectors Guide to Made in Japan Ceramics: Identification & Values (Collector's Guide to Made in Japan Ceramics).

  1. I collect older (collectible) MADE IN JAPAN items and therefore I have quite a few books on the subject. This book is not complete but quite helpful. Photos are nice.

Many different volumes have been written on this subject. Infact, I own 3 other books on this subject.

When "Made in Japan" collectibles were issued there were sooooo many different items sold, that it would be impossible to include all of them in just one book. The author tried and did a good job though.

  2. While this line of books continues to give pictures and markings for research and collecting, the author seems to be running out of examples when there are so many out there he could include.

  3. I purchased this book for the sole purpose of "Marks" identification. Sure there are pictures of marks, but none are identified. When I did a search to find books with oriental markings, this book was suggested. I was very disappointed ... pictures are great ... values appear too high. Enough said.

  4. Great color photos, informative text and a section on Identification marks that is worth the price of the whole book! I'm buying books #2 and 3 !

5 comments about The Art of World of Warcraft.

  1. I personally am a HUGE fan of video game art books. This book has over 200 pages of wonderful artwork. It exceeded all of my expectations. It has everything from in-game graphics, to rough sketches of weapons. Some images even have some amusing notes from the artists. Again, a most for any collection. Makes a great coffee table book.

  2. This book is a fantastic display of artwork. Anyone who enjoys conceptual artwork will enjoy this book. The hardback cover makes it a nice collectors item. The book itself has sketch work, as well as full color renderings, and everything in between. The amount of detail is amazing. The artists at Blizzard definately know their stuff, and it clearly shows in this book. A great gift for any fan of Warcraft or conceptual artwork in general.

  3. The book I got was in excellent condition, and when I looked through it. Wow! I was blown away. It's extraordinary. Such and incredible piece of art! There is so much to learn from the artists in it, and it'll be such a great inspiration. One of the best books I have ever bought!

  4. Actually I had bought the first concept book from blizzard and loved it. And when I found that it was available through amazon I was relieved becuase it was part of limited edition package. But anyhow the delievery was quick and I am pleased with the art. Alot to look at and get inspired from.

  5. I've always been impressed with the artwork with Warcraft, so books like these are always a treat. Although this one didn't have as much artwork as the first artbook the released "the Art of Warcraft", it still made an impact.

1 comments about Language of Forms: Lectures on Insular Manuscript Art.

  1. This is the first publication of Schapiro's series of six lectures on the seventh and eight century illuminated manuscripts of England, Scotland, and Ireland--known as the Insular manuscripts--given over three decades ago as a part of the Morgan Library's Franklin Jasper Wall's Lecture Series. Shapiro aimed in the lectures to correct what he saw as ill-informed, irrelevant criticisms of the manuscript art based on assumptions and biases regarding naturalism in Western art. Shapiro's analysis and explication of the Insular manuscript art in terms of his earlier work on Romanesque sculpture revolutionized appreciation and comprehension of it. The manuscript art was not clumsy and crude, as some critics and historians regarded it, but rather exceptionally sophisticated, inventive, and skilled for its age when individual works or pages were considered within a frame, or field, and the interrelationship among the parts was realized. This general, revolutionary insight led to recognition of the art works' "subtle and finely developed sense of order," as well as its "close coherence of forms [and] great ingenuity in creating a consistent complex pattern out of a few motifs, a pattern open to many variations." Such manuscript art "is an immensely fertile art associated with the written word." Schapiro's teaching has since become the basis for study of Insular manuscript art. In other lectures, he goes into the historical context and social sources of the art. It would be a mistake to take this series of six lectures as a specialized tutorial for a limited audience, as collected lectures or articles often are. This collected lectures is of modest length not from limitations to its subject matter or narrowness, but because of the lecturer's ability to condense all relevant points of interest in a style that is lucid and succinct as well as engaging.

2 comments about The History of Greek Vases.

  1. Its a very good book, well documented. The only issue that is was important to improve, is to change at least some photos from Black and White to Color. Art documentation demands many times to see directly the pieces colors

  2. Though this adds to a field which has been dealt with before, the book presnts a fresh and insightful viewpoint. It will be valuable to all students of Greek history and chronolgy, and modern "pot throwers" everywhere.

1 comments about Oceania: Art of the Pacific Islands in The Metropolitan Museum of Art (Metropolitan Museum of Art Publications).

  1. Hardback, 2007, 11.25" x 8.5", 353 Pages, 198 Objects illustrated in full color, 2 maps, numerous color & B/W illustrations. (Note : For some unknown reason, the book I purchased new from Amazon features a figure on the cover which is different than that shown in the Amazon entry, although both figures are included in the book.)

An very worthwhile effort with an eclectic and consistently interesting selection of art from New Guinea, Australia, Island Melanesia, Island Southeast Asia, Micronesia and Polynesia. The only rerason it doesn't get 5 stars is because the artifacts are mostly illustrated in 1/4 or 1/3 pages, and the small size dsoes not do them justice. In spite of this limitation, the book is still highly recommended for anybody who appreciates Oceanic Art.
