1 comments about The Posters of Jules Cheret: 46 Full-Color Plates and an Illustrated Catalogue Raisonne, Second, Revised and Enlarged Edition.

  1. This is the authoritative source for all the artwork and posters of Jules Cheret, who perfected color lithography in the late 1800's. There are a number of color slides of original Jules Cheret posters plus excellent descriptive information to help one identify a suspected Jules Cheret poster. The catalog is by theme or advertiser without an index or table of contents to help one located the exact page where, let's say, Moulin-Rouge or Olympia might start. This does then force scanning to find the start of the catagory one might want - an inconvenience. In spite of this, once you discover the catagory area, the material is informative and precise enough to help with identification.

3 comments about Getting Graphic: Using Graphic Novels to Promote Literacy With Preteens and Teens (Literature and Reading Motivation).

  1. Gorman, Michele. 2003. Getting Graphic!: Using Graphic Novels to Promote Literacy with Preteens and Teens. Worthington, OH: Linworth Publishing, Inc.

Graphic novels appeal to preteens and teens, but are not always appreciated for their literary value by adults. Getting Graphic is a tool for librarians and teachers that want to promote the use of graphic novels and comics in the library and classroom.

The first few chapters of Getting Graphic introduces the graphic novel and talks about the role it plays in libraries and classrooms. A brief history is given which covers the past, present, and future of graphic novels. The educational benefit of graphic novels is touched upon in chapter 2. Gorman includes research from Stephen Krashen that graphic novels are beneficial for young people who read English as a second language or for those who read on a lower reading level than their peers. (p. 11)

Chapter 3 deals with graphic novels and the curriculum. Gorman points out that the benefit of using graphic novels is to bridge the gap between what students want and what schools require. (p. 15) There are many graphic novels available that address topics of history, politics, science, literature, and social issues that will complement areas of study. A listing of titles broken down by topic and level is included. Skeptics of the literary value of graphic novels will be surprised to find that many contain standard literary devices, such as foreshadowing, point of view, irony, flashback, symbolism, satire, allegory, and allusion.

Librarians will be interested in chapters 4 - 6. Collection development and bibliographic control of a graphic novel is discussed in detail. Issues involving cataloging, shelving, and maintenance are also addressed. Chapter 5 focuses on the promotion of graphic novels in the library setting. Several programming ideas are provided as well as a superhero questionnaire, body template for students to create their own superhero, and a superhero trivia contest. An extensive annotated bibliography is included in Chapter 6. The bibliography is divided into different recommended lists: 50 Graphic Novels for an Intermediate Collection, Top 10 Graphic Novel Series, and 10 "Safe" Graphic Novels for Even the Most Conservative Libraries. The lists were created to help librarians develop a sizable and diverse core collection of graphic novels for their libraries. (p. 45)

A collection of supplementary material is included at the end of the book. Appendix A lists a glossary of terms. For someone not familiar with the terminology of graphic novels, this glossary is a must. A resource guide of professional review resources is listed in appendix B. Journal articles, books, and online resources are included. A listing of publishing companies and distributors is available in appendix C. This is a great resource for anyone wanting to build their graphic novel collection. Before adding graphic novels to a collection, the collection development policy needs to be reviewed. If graphic novels are not addressed, appendix D has a sample collection development policy which includes a section on incorporating graphic novels.

Getting Graphic is a must-buy for librarians that need guidance in purchasing and promoting graphic novels. The author has thoroughly researched graphic novels to provide a comprehensive guide that provides not only bibliographic lists but details on how those books can be integrated into the curriculum.

  2. to the world of graphic novels. Gorman delivers exactly the kind of info that busy teachers and librarians need: lots of annotated lists (including ten "safe" graphic novels), some context, and issue related to selecting, maintaining, and promoting a graphic novel collection. There's a great gloosary of terms (only lack a pronounication guide for terms related to Japanese animation), a guide to resources, and even a nice guide to publishers and distributers. On top of all this are some illustrations / covers from graphic novels, plus an illustration of the author drawn as a Librarian Superhero. Gorman does a superhero task of advocating and explaining the need for graphic novels in school and public libraries.

  3. While new on the scene, Michele Gorman shows great promise as a literary mastermind. Her first book tells it like it is. Harry Potter, watch out. If you are a teacher, or parent, trying to reach your kids on a literary level, this book is definitely for you. I just can't wait for her next publication.

1 comments about Drawing to See.

  1. "Drawing to See" is an excellent book for someone interested in a somewhat basic explanation of the aspects of drawing responsively. It is a contracted presentation of the concepts presented in two other books by Goldstein, "The Art of Responsive Drawing" and "Design and Composition". I feel that "Drawing to See" would be an excellent text for Drawing I and II classes at the community college level.

1 comments about Renaissance.

  1. This is an excellent introduction to the development of renaissance art. The book begins by examining the religio-cultural origins of the Italian renaissance in the 13th and 14th centuries. It then travels through Italy, encompassing the movement in Florence, Venice and Rome, examining the reasons behind artistic developments through the artists and their sometimes notorious employers. The tone is lively and witty throughout and never less than intelligent. The author clearly has a great reverence for his subject and conveys this love throughout without ever becoming overly sentimental. The photographic reproduction of the artworks discussed is also superb and unlike many books definitely follows the text so thereader has no difficulty following the arguments that Graham-Dixon puts forward. Well worth reading

1 comments about Cutler Anderson Architects.

  1. James Cutler makes his home on Bainbridge Island, near Seattle, where he is able to carry out his work in relative privacy . This monograph is the second to exhibit the work he has become famous for - a bare bones Northwest vernacular that owes as much to his Pennsylvania roots as it does to the Pacific Northwest. It is readily apparent that Cutler studied under Louis Kahn in the exacting details he demands in all his projects. He now has the luxury to pick and choose his clients which have include Bill Gates. You get a small glimpse of the Gates estate in the Entry Turnaround in Medina, Washington. He and Peter Bohlin worked on the project together, setting up a sawmill on the site to cut the recycled timber to their specifications. As Cutler once said, I never look at the same detail twice, re-examining the methods and materials of construction anew in each project he undertakes.

With the introduction of Bruce Anderson to the firm, he has begun to investigate pre-fabricated housing in the form of the Lindal Cedar Home, but you can see that it is the unique individual homes which he relishes. He experimented with rammed-earth construction in the Residence at Meteor Vineyards in Napa Valley, creating a unique marbled finish; but it is projects like the Schmidt Residence that bear his signature in the intricate woodwork and metal connections. This book provides you with a short but thorough look into several of the projects, illustrating that James Cutler is one of the leading architects of his generation.
