2 comments about Women Designers in the USA, 1900-2000: Diversity and Difference.

  1. This book is the result of extremely thorough research by the best authors and scholars in the business. It contains masses of detailed information not previouly brought to light, and helps both serious researchers and the general reader alike due to its easy-reading style and interesting coverage. There is an excellent timeline, with superb illustrations and revelations of all those designers whose names and works had not yet been recorded. A must for all teachers of any of the areas of design in the book, such as Interior Design, Jewellery, Ceramics, Film, Textiles, Fashion, or Furniture. A superlative addition to the Design History world. I just wish I could see the accompanying exhibition.

  2. That about says it. If you love design, and if you love learning about women's history, as I do, you will love this book.

2 comments about Aaron Copland's America: A Cultural Perspective.

  1. This book reproduces the paintings & fills in the story of Aaron Copland's friendships & interactions with the world of the the arts, from his visits to the Brooklyn Museum, Paris, & adventures in New York. A lively & informative review of the show for which the book is a catalogue & interpretive essay, appeared in the New York Times, written by John Russell: [December 22, 2000, Friday] ART REVIEW; Fanfare for Copland, A Fervent Adventurer By JOHN RUSSELL Source: The New York Times Section: Leisure/Weekend Desk [1007 words] Abstract: John Russell reviews Heckscher Museum exhibit illustrating America of composer Aaron Copland. [photo (M)] -------------------------------------------------------------------Lead Paragraph: To walk through ''Aaron Copland's America'' at the Heckscher Museum of Art in Huntington, on Long Island, is a considerable adventure. The exhibition is a biographical study of one of the best-loved American composers of the 20th century. But it is much more: a freewheeling, farsearching trawl through an America that, though vital to Copland, was not his only concern...... Born in 1900, Copland lived until near the end of a tumultuous century. He lived more than one of that century's adventures. As a younger American composer, John Adams, said last year, Copland "reached his maturity at the same point that the country was seriously searching for its own cultural identity." He added: "Copland, like Robert Frost and Edward Hopper, found a way of expressing in the most simple and direct language deeply felt intuitions about the American experience." [full review available from NYTimes archive] ------------------------------------------------------------------------- What I found moving was the way the book shows what kinds of music, art, ideas were exciting people as Copland matured & how he got into the swim, indeed helped to shape it. For me the music becomes more exciting because the book gives it a context & illustrates & evokes the culture in which Copland made his way.

  2. Copland is one of the great american composers. This book makes an effort to capture that perspective in the written word but falls somewhat short. Listen to music for music don't read about it. This book is enjoyable to the huge copland fans who crave everything that has his name on it, but in general is not all to interesting otherwise.

4 comments about Schiele Drawings: 44 Works (Dover Art Library).

  1. This book contains some wonderful drawings, but the book itself is made of very cheap materials. The paper is somewhere between newsprint and construction paper. However, this hardly detracts from the artwork itself, as Schiele's rough sketches feel right at home on rough paper. Perhaps it's for the best. Buy it for the art, not so you'll have a beautiful book to put on the coffee table. A child might mistake it for a coloring book, and that child would be forever disturbed.

  2. It's a concise collection of some of his best works, spanning his career. Enjoyed having a sample from each of his styles over time, but didn't realize they were only black and white copies (my fault). So you'll have to do without the color. Overall good value, because the price is extremely low.

  3. This book is great for the $7 price, just let me preface with that remark. The book is also of a pretty good size.

On the downside, and this is a big one for me- There are more than just drawings in this book. Many of the works are drawings with Gouache and Watercolor, and are still printed in black and white. While all the works print up okay in black and white, with little loss as to the line work, the fact that the originals are in color makes me a little sad.

If you are interested at all in any more than the line quality of Schiele's works, get one of the more expensive collections of his works, which include color plates.

  4. dover art library books are a great way to get copies of master drawings...cheap. all prints are in b/w and print quailty isn't the best...but for the price they are a great unprecious alternative to the glove wearing 60$ art book.

1 comments about Writing About the Humanities (3rd Edition).

  1. This writing guide gives such nice concrete suggestions for writing exercises of all sorts for those who really need structure to get them started. Each section discusses different approaches to writing about art - from literature, painting, music, dance - and movies, finishing up with very specific directions for beginning paragraphs through essays.

3 comments about Treasury of Floral Designs and Initials for Artists and Craftspeople (Dover Pictorial Archive Series).

  1. This book is just full of gorgeous decorative monograms and floral motifs. Highly recommended for anyone looking for inspiration in the lost art of embroidered monograms such as what you'd find on beautiful linens and items found in antique shops and flea markets.

  2. I was excited when I discovered this book and I knew I had to have this for my library. I am a calligrapher and I am always looking for designs that will enhance my work. I was not at all disappointed when my package arrived! The work is very detailed and the book has plenty to offer. not to mention the embellishments are just to die for!!! The script/lettering is fantastic and it was well worth the investment. I know this book will never be found on the shelf or coffee table because it will be well used and always on my work table. Just sign me as "ONE HAPPY CALLIGRAPHER"!!!

  3. This book had TONS of inspiration for embroidery and silk ribbon embroidery. Lots of monograms and designs that can be adapted easily. I use it all the time! I've also noticed a few Anna Griffin designs seem to be inspired from this book as well!

3 comments about Seeing Through Paintings: Physical Examination in Art Historical Studies.

  1. I recommend this book often to art historians and collectors so that they can understand how the materials of a painting, e.g. canvas vs. wood, oil vs. tempera, etc. affect the look of the painting, how paintings change with age (become more transparent, fade, how varnish darkens), and how conservators also may change the look of paintings by conservation treatments. The chapters provide a useful history of materials of Western art, describing the support, grounds, paint films, and coatings. The book tells in clear language what you learn from x-radiographs and examination with ultra-violet light, how to tell that separated panels come from the same altarpiece, or how to recognize if a painting has been cut down or repainted. It was written by an art historian and a conservator working together and should appeal to both groups. Excellent illustrations and information about many well-known artists.

  2. This book provides case studies and clearly presented themes to unveil paintings from "the inside out". Well illustrated and organized, concise.

  3. Yeah, I ordered two books at the same time, one from amazon and one from this seller. This seller provided the best service. While Amazon's order was delayed and frought with difficulty the transaction with this seller was quick and efficient.
