5 comments about Street Art and the War on Terror: How the World's Best Graffiti Artists Said No to the Iraq War.

  1. This book is really interesting- I thought it was just American artists tagging stuff here in the states, but its actually people from all over the world tagging all over the world.

  2. As an Art teacher, I feel that this book is great for looking at images of public art. This book shows that art is happening everywhere in many different forms and artists can make their voices heard. The artists chosen for this book are some of the best artists of the street art/public art movement currently going on.

  3. We found this book at the Tate Modern in London, and loved it. It's fascinating. However, with the currency exchange rate these days, it was much cheaper to find it in the states. This book was a Christmas gift for our family, and was shipped in good condition and in a timely manner. High marks!

  4. The collection of art in the book isn't bad, but the way it is presented and the captions accompanying the works leave a lot to be desired. I am not a Bush supporter, but i don't want to have a graffiti of a monkey likened to Bush without any evidence that the artist had that idea in mind. The captions are extremely anti-Bush and one dimensional; everything is about the illegal war in Iraq, the Bush war machine, or the Bush-Blair collaboration. I am a liberal, but anything this one sides invokes in me a desire to play devils advocate. Not an altogether well thought out or significant consideration of the art, but again, the art is good. And to be fair, -some- of the artists were "saying" exactly what the makers of this book wanted them to be saying.

  5. This is a beautifully composed book that looks at street from every corner of the globe. But what sets this book apart is the extremely insightful narrative that accompanies the photos. You will never look at street art or the war on terror in the same way.

  1. Not only is this book an informative view at Josef Muller-Brockmann, it's beautiful enough to display. We've really enjoyed the series, including OTl Aicher, Max Huber. Because they're all the same size and thickness, we display them together. Phaidon does it right.

5 comments about Manga Mania Bishoujo (Manga Mania).

  1. This book came with another one that I ordered. It's another great book to have.

  2. Had good drawings of eyes, face, and etc. But is for more beginners than advanced drawers. It's kind of show steps you would take to get to the final product.

  3. I must say, that looking at this cover is exactly what you will get throughout all of this book, well almost. Hart put his drawing in their as well, but it's not alot of it. Anyway, This book gives you examples of hair styles, facial expressions, clothes, and girl type. Although Hart's simple so called manga style is in some of the pages, the book is still very good. The contents of this book includes:
    The details of the head
    Character types
    Bishoujo hair
    The bishoujo body
    Advanced poses
    Bishoujo clothing
    Drawing characters in costumes
    Creating glamour
Creating chemistry (only very little images of this section.)
Magical girl effects. (Only a small portion of effects in this section)

This book is a good start to giving you the basic idea of giving your girl character a appealing standing pose, as well as attractive hair. I definitely recommend this book for those who are having a slight problem with giving their female characters sex appeal, and if this book isn't your cup of tea, then I would recommend "More how to draw manga Volume 1: The basics of character drawing." That is another great book. Other than that Hart picked some good artists' for this book, so it's definitely worth buying.

  4. This book is adorable. The art is stunning (That's because Christopher Hart only drew about 22 illustrations out of the whole book.)Christopher was never a good artist in the style of manga. I'm was never a fan of his art and still isn't.
But this book is great to have for refrence, most of the book is not for beginners, But it might be useful for them to buy it anyway. It does has some simple steps for them in drawing the heads.
It starts you off drawing beautiful eyes. Then the many lips and mouths and their expressions.
Then drawing the head in different poses.
And then it goes to teaching you how to draw the Cheat between the Pretty Girl (only two pages though.)
It shows you 9 pages on hair, when wind is blowing, between short, long, medium, and wild hair. The many curves of hair and style. Also "When you change a hair style, you change a character" page. It gives you 12 pages on body expressions and poses and Body Language.
3 pages on the poses of hands and (2 pages)
on feet (note all feet pictures except one, is wearing some kind of shoe.) It also tells you between a Stylish Figure and a Seductive Figure,a Cool Figure, and Warrior Figure(4 pages.)
It also have Advance Action Poses (11 pages.)
It also has Bishoujo Clothing from Primitive to Techno Soldier to School to Professional Uniforms to Magical and non-Human costumes (11 pages.) They have Drawing Characters in Costume
(17 pages)(the following is in order); Futuristic fighter and in medieval Futuristic Fighter, Fantasy Elf Princess and Rich Elf Princess, Traditonal in Country and Tropical, Athlete in Gymnast and Runner, Villian is Fantasy and Sci-fi, Scientist in Pretty and Beautiful, School Girls and their many uniforms.
Glamouring up a Character (9 pages) shows you how you can make a character more glamourous by changing the hair, outfit, or pose. But afterwards it's Creating Chemistry (7 pages).
And last but not least "Magical Girl Special Effects" (on the last 7 pages.) <--That might be very useful if you creating a Magical Bishoujo Manga.
I'll give it 5 stars cause it was a very good book and most of the illustraions were amazing. It was worth the money.
A Super Good Book for Kids. Cause it contains no nudy at all.
But I think that this book is better than Christopher Hart's Shoujo Book.

  5. Manga Mania was actually not bad. Chris Hart's books are rather hit or miss for me, but this book was very comprehensive. It covers the female figure in great detail in Japanese style. The contributing artists were wonderful and did a good job of showing the female figure and face from various angles.

The sad thing about Chris Hart's books is that his own artistic style is so very poor. Frankly I could've done without his own illustrations, which is really too bad since he is the author.

I think the couples illustration at the end, and the drawings of the face from various angles were worth this book's price alone.

5 stars. A book I'll use again and again!

5 comments about Motion by Design.

  1. Good book for inspiration, but the dvd is just ok. The dvd automatically opened my Mac's dvd player at full screen - which was quite pixelated. You would have expected a dvd showcasing innovative motion graphics to look less honkey-tonk. It was as if the publishers thought about producing the dvd as an afterthought.

  2. Great book for getting inspired, dvd was a bit off a let down the quality isn't the best. But this is a great book for people that need inspiration and admire great work.

  3. If you plan to get this book for inspiration, it looks pretty good. But the DVD is almost worthless as the navigation makes it hard to watch and then the actual examples have text copyright information that is very distracting. Feels more like you paid for stock artwork but still get the white lines over the art. Very lame. There are probably some better inspiration material on the web. The packaging on this book is nice but don't expect too much in terms of content.

  4. "Motion by Design" is a book about motion graphics. One might expect that a DVD enclosed with such a book might be chock full of tremendous examples of cool stuff. Not the case. The dvd is a mess. The disc is hard to navigate, videos play as windows within menus, NOT full screen, but that's made worse by the huge copyright super on the frames and an unanavoidable narration track. I feel ripped off by a promise unkept. Don't waste your cash on this ripoff.

  5. qualified motion samples from all media with a short text explanation.
That's ok for me. But what's the problem with the DVD interface guys? You can not play all so you have to select each title from a long list, again again, its pain. The interface design so cheesy, low-end DVD for hi-end content. You can only watch a part of some long samples such as music videos, shame... 5 stars for the book not DVD.

3 comments about Art and Feminism (Themes & Movements).

  1. This book would be an excellent textbook for a Women In Art course. It doesn't have much information on centuries prior to the twentieth and largely focuses on art, artists, and issues from the 1960's on, so it wouldn't do as the only text for such a course. But this is all you need for late twentieth century concerns.

The early essays are dripping with Freudian psychology and psychoanalytical social criticism. The issues surrounding why it took so long for there to be a sense of equality of greatness amongst artists of all genders is explored deeply. The issues of representation of all races and sexual orientations then follows. The book stops just short of discussing the newest research on intersex persons (persons born with an extra chomosome, among others {XXY, for example}).

For a movement that was intending to create a sense of equality, feminist theory highlights both the vast differences as well as the profound similarities between the perception processes of men and women. This includes both the perceptions of and different approaches to art as well as life. Yet, when all is said and done, more recent artists are primarily interested not in these issues, but more a sense of having their work judged based on its quality, not their gender.

The only disappointment I have in this book is one that no other book addresses either. So, I mean this only as a minor criticism. In short, the book does not answer the following: Is ther an intersex mind state? Feminist theory either didn't reach the point of asking this in time for the extensive research put into this book or it has come to its conclusion and will transform gradually into a whole other movement.

The art chosen to represent the above ideas and explorations is top quality. The reproductions are sharp and colorful. I would recommend this book to anyone with interests in women in art or in feminist theory.

  2. This book is a great "picture book" for anyone interested in art and/or women artist. The descriptions of the work are concise, giving enough information to make you want to investigate further. A necessary addition to any art book collection.

  3. I saw this book reviewed in Bust mag and am so glad I got a copy for myself. Peggy Phelan and Helena Reckitt have accomplished a "portable gallery" in this book--it is like seeing all of the works themselves, but with commentary that helps at every step of the way.

Peggy Phelan's introduction is great because she draws everything together in a way that I couldn't do on my own, and actually, I am amazed ANYONE could do it. Wow.

The book is expensive but worth it because otherwise you would have to buy about 100 books to try and do for yourself what they did here.

Peggy and Helena, and all the artists, YOU ROCK!!!
