3 comments about The Everyday Work of Art: Awakening the Extraordinary in Your Daily Life.

  1. I logged on here to get a link and some other data in order to be able to tell others about this book. (I've been telling others about it for a long time now.) I discovered that there are only two reviews (!?) for this book here. Let me hasten, then, to add mine:

This ought to be required reading for every individual before they graduate from high school.

Of all the books that I recommend to others (of which there are many), this remains at the very top of the list...numero uno.

Of the over 200 books I have read on the use of one's mind, body and spirit to achieve and create excellence in one's pursuits of life, this provides the most complete survey of how to use one's sensory intake --how to pay attention -- than the rest.

  2. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. In very
clear and insightful language, Booth reveals the wonder
of "experiencing" the art of living. Over and over
again, I experienced "Ah, Hah" moments while reading
this book. This book would make an ideal gift.

  3. This book was an unexpected gem! From the opening words, through the very last chapter, I was caught up in how well the author was able to translate the sometimes esoteric world of creativity for the everyday person. His down-to-earth style helped the subject come alive and after reading the Everyday Work of Art, I feel I can start living more creatively. As a side note, the book's cover, with it's clever cut-outs, compliments the book very well. A supurb package and read!

2 comments about John Sloan's New York (Delaware Art Museum).

  1. Sloan's last wife is responsible for this catalogue. I am looking forward to the exhibition at the end of this month at the University of Chicago's Smart Museum.John Sloan was a high school drop out,( as was Stuart Davis). His meeting Robert Henri was transormational to him: He read more . He walked more. All of the Ash Can painters walked to absorb and find subjects in New York City. Most worked as artist/reporters.They did very sophisticated drawings for newspapers during this period. They were inspired by Aubrey Beardsley and the Ukiyo Japanese prints. Stuart Davis was a fan of Beardsley and was one of the influences that led him to abstraction. The catalogue has repros of Sloan's graphic work.I am pleased that the art world has come out with so many good books about these artists. I believe that the Abstract Expressionist have follwed them in their interest in subject matter...the city. They also follow the painterliness of John Sloan and George Bellows.Sloan was a long time friend to Stuart Davis. In Davis we find remnants of the Ash Can painters.Helen Farr Sloan died in 2005 she is responsible for the story of John Sloan as from the time she spent as his student ,to the time they were man and wife ,she kept notes and records of his thinking on art.The catalogue contains essays on different aspects of Sloan. I would like to see all of the paintings in the show,in this catalogue. But, nonetheless the book will be a good seller.

  2. It is an excellent book on John Sloan. A catalog of a show they put on at the Delaware Art Museum. The information on Sloan is complete and engaging. Reproduction of the art is fine.

Good coverage of the period of his art career from 1908 to 1920 when he was working in New York City. This is the most interesting period of his art. Anyone who is interested in this period of art for America will find this a good worthwhile book.

4 comments about Type Selector.

  1. Its format like the Pantone guides makes the task of finding the right font, or right direction, so quick, enjoyable and efficient. It is as the names says "the user-friendly font swatch".

I agree with Ramone C. Munoz that it should be printed on both sides but I could not be with a different font because the search wouldn't be straighforward. Instead I would recomend it to have a basic text layout using all the typeface variations (bold, italic, semibold.. etc) -- I missed this feature as, although we can predict how these variations would look like, a real layout using them tells so much about the typeface.

Again, as J. Pennington stated, "there's obviously a limited amount of typefaces they could include in a format like this. Still, even if you can't find the font you're after, it points you in the right direction".

It has a little more than 200 typefaces.
Sturdy - it will last many years.

  2. If type design is your domain, this is an excelent tool to own. Remember MacGyver? You'll understand.

  3. I work in pre-press and graphic design, and font matching and searching has got to be one of the most time-consuming and potentially frustrating tasks.
This is the first Type Selector I've seen like this - it mirrors the Pantone colour chart idea, and overall, it's a great product.
The fonts are sorted into serif, slab serif, sans serif, blackletter, script and display, and every entry has lots of information about each font, including where to buy it.
While there are a lot of fonts in the Type Selector, there's obviously a limit to the number they could include in a format like this. Still, even if you can't find the font you're after, it points you in the right direction.

  4. A great guide for students. Only suggestion would be to print on both sides of each swatch. You could double the number of fonts persented in the same amount of space. Other than that, great product. Good font reproductions.

5 comments about Roman Art.

  1. I'm taking a Roman Art Course and it's an excellent text to start, great images and easy to understand information. I thought it was not going to be in the perfect conditions it came. I feel very satisfied :D

  2. I wanted to refresh on a Roman Art History course I took in college, because I'll be going to Italy soon and wanted to remember all the great things I learned in that class. I found this book and it is identical to the book I study years ago. I'm extremely excited I've found this book. And it has brought back all those things I have forgotten about the history of Art is Roman.

  3. "Roman Art" is easily one of the best art history books I have ever read. What really sets it apart is the writing style - rather than being dry and stuffy, the language is very clear, understandable, and *gasp* engaging! Be warned, the pictures are primarily black and white, but many of the objects covered, being marble statues and buildings, have no need for color. Those items that are printed in color, like wall paintings, are items that really benefit from it. I would highly recommend this book to those interested in Roman art, and even to those who aren't - I had no real interest in Roman art when I used "Roman Art" in an art history class, but this book has made it one of my favorite subjects.

  4. This book is an absolute gem! It is thorough and very educational yet quite readable and even entertaining. The text is paired with brilliant photos that make the topic come to life. Even while cramming for a test, this book made my study time less boring and even enjoyable!
A must for anyone interested in the topic of Roman art - provides a solid foundation.

  5. As any student of Roman Art/Archaeology knows, good introductory texts are hard to find. This text, now considered by many to be the "standard text", is a MUST for anyone who is just beginning the journey into Roman Art and for more advanced students as a general reference. The authors cover the entire gamut of the subject with readable texts supplimented with excellent images. They were also wise enough to include the most up-to-date schalorly information.

2 comments about The Truth in Painting.

  1. A reading of Adami's reading of Derrida's Glas. Fantastic book. Recommended to those who want a new view of painting, art, and history in general.

  2. Derrida has a very complicated way of writing : it is not easy avoiding metaphors, the verb to be, the 'I'. Especially when the subject is art, beacause it is exactly the realm of the aesthetic, the subjective, the presence. This, I think, is one of his most difficult texts.
This book sets to investigate the multiple questions that develop in the presence of Cezanne's proposal : Cezanne's aim is to tell the truth in painting.
What is the relation between truth anda beauty, language and image, philosophy and art? Derrida investigates those in two large chapters called 'Parergon' and 'Van Gogh boots'.

4 comments about Suspended In Language : Niels Bohr's Life, Discoveries, And The Century He Shaped.

  1. This is really a good example of tough physics made accessible! I enjoyed reading the book and will definitely recommend it to students and colleagues.

  2. To his colleagues, Niels Bohr was the "Pope of Physics." Razor-edged minds like Dirac, Franck, Frisch, Gamow, Klein, Mott, Oppenheimer, Pauli, Planck, Schrödinger, and others -- many of whom would later become Nobel laureates themselves -- to proud to say they had studied with Bohr. He was a poor lecturer because he never knew where his thoughts would take him and would often stop in the middle of an explanation when a new idea occurred to him. Without him, there would be no modern physics, no quantum mechanics, no basic understanding of the atom. And while Bohr sometimes entertained theories that turned out to be wrong -- which he was the first to admit -- even Einstein was wrong in areas where Bohr was right. Ottaviani is a very uneven graphics chronicler of modern science and scientists, but this is a very well thought out book, as successful an attempt as I have seen to explain Bohr's thought (as well as his humane and internationalist personal beliefs) and the basics concepts of quantum physics.

  3. Ottaviani's Suspended in Language operates on a number of different levels and is appealing with just the right mixture of intellect and humor. While managing to create a biographical text on the life of Niels Bohr the story also delves into the fundamental principles of quantum mechanics. Ottaviani created a piece that could be solely read as a primer on quantum mechanics while managing to focus on Bohr's life. The facts are elucidated in illustrations that are intentionally reminiscent of a comic-strip. Just when you begin to feel like you're cramming a bit too much information into your brain all at once the book will take a several page detour into the every day dealings of Bohr's life, and having given you the chance to collect your wits, rev back up to an intellectual furor. What truly makes the book remarkable though is the concise yet vivid description of the various other physicists that Bohr interacted with and influenced. Ottaviani obviously felt compelled to tell the story of Bohr's life because he impacted so many different areas of science and revolutionized fields whose true merit has yet to be realized. Everyone should read this book in order to have a basic understanding of how the scientific notions that guide our lives today were first conceived of and then put into widespread implementation. It's a great read and an even better learning experience.

  4. Science teachers have a large number of stories - some true, some apocryphal, and some somewhere in between - to regale their students with. We have Einstein's demands of the deity concerning dice, Rutherford's booming voice that trashed lab apparatus, Oppenheimer's Indian verse quoting at Trinity, and Teller's strangelovian life among others, but no good stories from the life of Niels Bohr. Jim Ottaviani, Leland Purvis, et al. have saved us with their intelligent, witty, and spacey cartoon retelling of Niles Bohr's life - Suspended In Language.

If you choose to dip into this very cool science biography, prepare to learn some physics along with the story of Bohr's life. The authors have supplied a generous number of footnotes and endnotes [done as cartoons] to explain the harder points. The book is indexed and referenced to the extreme. This is not some casual cartoon compilation, but a serious piece of graphic scholarship.

I highly recommend Suspended In Language to anyone interested in physics, scientists, or the history of the 20th Century. I also recommend the other books about scientists from G.T. Labs, including Safecracker [Richard Feynman] and Fallout [Oppenheimer, Szilard, and the Bomb].
