1. Ken Tate's firm designs new houses along classical lines - this one is a French inspired estate built in a small Mississippi town. The photos are nice and include images of the house inside and out as well as the grounds. Numerous photos show small details of the design and workmanship. Simple floor plans as well as elevations of the house and details are included. Credits are provided for craftsmen and companies that did much of the work. I'ts nice to see that someone still cares about the details and craftsmen are still arround to build something like this even in an out of the way location.

1. Well it seems Sherman could not burn all of Georgia. This is a wonderful book on a very deserving subject, Gleasons books are always well done and the photography just pops off the page. Georgia is graced with many grand plantation homes and this books does a credible job of capturing the most beautiful. If you are someone the least bit interested in Georgia or the Old South, then I believe you will be pleased with this book, it is an excellent companion to Gleasons books on the plantations of Louisiana, Virginia,and the Antebellum homes of Natchez.

1. This book is fantastic, the images are first rate and the book is very thorough, I found the text to be highly informative. When someone asks me where I would love to live if I could live anywhere, this is always my first choice, over Provance, over New South Wales, over anywhere, this is the place. The perfect climate, the wonderful architecture, the proximity to L.A., frankly this place is heaven on earth. This book lets you in on what makes Santa Barbara so special and the buildings chosen are perfect. I really can't say enough about this book, it is a book you will referance frequently and be proud to own. I assure you even if you have wonderful books, if you had one or two books to save this would be one, it is that good.



2. I had purchased the original edition of this book in the 1970's when I moved to Santa Barbara and it was getting a little dog-eared so I got the newest one expecting it to be mainly a reprint. I was surprised to find a large number of new entries done in the same style as the original. The text accompanying the photos by Patricia Halloran is refreshingly factual (rather than art-speak) although very brief. Most of the photos are excellent although all are still in black and white. For those wishing to view the actual buildings, street addresses are given in Santa Barbara proper, but not for those in the "royalty regions" of Hope Ranch and Montecitio.



3. I browsed this book at Borders today. This is a labor of love. From the turn of the century to the present day, it has at least one photo of every building of significance and by every prominent architect of Santa Barbara, Monticito, and Hope Ranch. There are many buildings by local architects as well as by famous ones. Also, the landscape architect is listed when that is appropriate. I loved this book because I have visited Santa Barbara many times and fantasised about living there. In fact, for me, Santa Barbara is the most beautiful place I have actually been to. For those readers who love architecture, this is a must have book: Mission style, Bungalow style, Spanish Revival, Mission Revival,Hacienda, Classical, Modern, Prarie Style, Californian, all are represented here. More importantly, the homes (mostly, but many government buildings are shown also), were commissioned by clients with the money to make the scale of the project majestic enough to last the ages. I have great pleasure is being inside beautiful homes, and this affords us a chance to see buildings that we ordinarily never would. If you can afford it,buy this book and have many years of browsing and dreaming.



4. Santa Barbara Architecture, From Spanish Colonial to Modern, is a wonderful informative book for this genre of architecture. It is a survey book, following lovely homes and businesses for blocks and blocks of neighborhoods in Santa Barbara. As an architectural student, I found it very informative and correct. Spanish detailing is abundant. My only criticism is that the pictures would have been better if they were in color, given all the color in Spanish, mission-style architecture. However, it's well worth the price just for the information.

Jefferson's architectural drawings, edited and compiled by a noted architectural historian who taught at the university which Jefferson founded, give the general reader a perfect opportunity to observe Jefferson's talents not just as an architect but as a draftsman and artist. The drawings of the 1st and 2nd Monticello convincingly reveal to a general audience how the design and shape of his beloved home evolved from that of a two-story villa derived from the designs of the famous Italian Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio to the red-bricked, octagonal, and domed three-story Neoclassical building that we see today. The drawings of Jefferson's other architectural masterpieces like the University of Virginia, Virginia State Capitol, and Poplar Forest also show this extraordinary Virginian's knowledge and mastery of the concepts of Classical architecture. This book is a must for all who admire Thomas Jefferson the architect and for all who want to know how he designed and built such beautiful buildings without any professional training as an architect.

1. This book, which was published in 1987, contains a wealth of information on carbide lamps. Carbide lamps were the main source of illumination for miners from about 1900 to 1950. They were cheap, reliable, and, best of all, they produced a lot of light! These lamps were also used by a variety of outdoor enthusiasts, including hunters, fishermen, and cave explorers.
   
   This book lists the many brands of carbide lamps that were produced and has photographs and drawings of many of them. Of special interest to the collector, Appendix A gives a list of United States Carbide Lamp patents, arranged by date. Appendix B gives a list of all the known "Brand Names" and rates each brand as to rarity from 1 to 10, with 1 being very common and 10 extremely rare. This is especially valuable to the beginning collector.
   
   This book is hardback, with a dust cover. There are a number of interesting old photos of lamps being used in mines and caves. Very little has been published on American carbide lamps and this is a wonderful source of information.
