1 comments about Fantasy Architecture: 1500-2036.

  1. This book is full of houses, buildings, cities and other architectural designs that could have been built, if there had been more money or less common sense. Many of these designs are before there time and some are just ideas that could never be. Tombs, bridges, toys, video games and other items from the past that have shaped and channeled our ideas of modern and future architecture. The book was printed for a touring exhibition but is still worth getting just for itself. Lots of images to look at and dream about.

4 comments about Cave Paintings Of Baja California: Discovering the Great Murals of an Unknown People.

  1. I got this book for the pictures and as a guide and for that end it has served my purpose quite well. Since Baja is my "backyard" I wanted to further my explorations of the penisnsula. Having seen some pictographs prior to this book I found the book very helpful for seeking out those most remote locations. As a travelogue I found the book dry and rather unexciting, but some might find it interesting over the camp fire. To it's credit the photographs are spectacular, as are the drawings and maps. The historical information is informative but again rather bland in it's presentation. The color maps presented prior to each detailed chapter are outstanding for your own personal explorations. There is one overview map of the general mural region that is good for the book but not for real life exploration. I would suggest picking up a good map of Baja along with this book prior to any explorations of your own. This book serves as an excellent guide and is recommended by this veteran Baja traveller.

  2. Crosby has an encyclopedic knowledge of the area. Based on many years of travel in the peninsula, this magnificently illustrated volume not only provides information on visiting the primary pictograph sites of central Baja, but also provides memorable insights to the contemporary human culture of the area. Highly recommended for anyone interested in prehistoric art of Southwestern America, particularly the Cochiti peoples.

  3. A MUST READ FOR ANYONE INTERESTED IN PREHISTORIC ROCK ART. SUPERBLY DOCUMENTEDWITH EXCELLENT MAPS AND ILLUSTRATIONS. PEOPLEUNFAMILIAR WITH BAJA CALIFORNIA WILL BE AMAZEDBY THE SHEER NUMBER OF PAINTED SITES AND THE MONUMENTAL SCALE OF MANY OF THEM. A SURE AWARD WINNER.

  4. for three winters my wife and i searched for and found many of the painted sites crosby catalouged.some of the sites were disappointing but some were outstanding. without crosbys book a good spanish dictionary and atlas of baja it would be impossible to find any of these exciting paintings. this was a quest fulfilled thanks harry.......

4 comments about Discovering the History of Your House: And Your Neighborhood.

  1. Everyone can find interest in researching the history of past inhabitants of their house. This book gives step-by-step instructions to identify the names of past inhabitants, how to locate them or their relatives, and learn facts about their lives as well as obtain old photos showing your house in previous incarnations. One can learn about hidden mysteries ranging from hidden rooms to why in the world did they choose THAT interior decoration, etc.

For inspiration I recommend reading "If These Walls Had Ears," written by James Morgan. It is what you might write when you complete research like this.

  2. Many people are familiar with the idea of tracing your family roots, and learning what history surrounds you. But, this book tells you how you can trace the history of the house you live in! Providing a great deal of suggestions and courses of action, this book tells you how you can find out all sorts of wonderful information on your house. If you are interested in the history of small things, then I highly recommend that your get this very useful book!

  3. Discovering The History Of Your House And Your Neighborhood by noted house historian Betsy J. Green is a fun, simple, and "user friendly" step-by-step guide to researching the history of a private home. From surfing the Internet, to following a paper trail, Discovering The History Of Your House is a welcome and highly recommended primer to finding out everything you want or need to know about the architectural history of your own home, but didn't know who or how to ask.

  4. If you've wondered how old your home is, what it used to look like, if those stories you heard are true, this is the book for you. Start with any chapter that piques your interest -- you're sure to find useful tips and things you never thought of, like using a metal detector in your yard. I found many good strategies and I've been researching homes since 1995. Green explains sources of information and how to access them, nationwide. Her glossary explains in simple language the legal terms you're likely to encounter. An excellent general introduction to the topic.

2 comments about Construction Technology for Tall Buildings.

  1. I was searching for a book regarding high-rise concrete construction and settled on this one. As I suspected, the information in this book does not represent how things are done in the US market. (NOTE: Bamboo scaffolding on page 305 and shirtless/shoeless workers on page 213). The portion of the 417 page book related to concrete frame construction is only 20 pages. The book is not entirely useless but covers all topics only very briefly.

  2. This book is fairly well written. I noticed a few typos / factual errors, but that tends to be true of a lot of technical books that are published nowadays. I think the technical content of the book has been worth the purchase price. The book covers a variety of general technical issues related to the construction of tall buildings, sometimes on difficult site conditions. A good overview of the subject. Tends to focus primarily on structural engineering issues, which as a structural engineer myself, I appreciate.
