5 comments about Around the World: The Grand Tour in Photo Albums.

  1. Lose youself in this book and be transported to a time when the world was large and travel was an adventure. The slightly voyeristic feel of viewing strangers' photo albums enhances the strong sense of time and place. Its the perfect book for a long winter afternoon (and a pot of darjeeling tea.) I'll be sending this to several people on my xmas list.

  2. This charming book offers an escape from the reality (and banality) of contemporary travel. Long before Trip Advisor and Facebook, photo albums were a form of self-expression that travelers shared with friends and family. Against all odds, some of the best adventures have endured and been reproduced in this elegant book.

There was a time when travel was daring, exotic and glamorous, and Around the World captures the excitement and wonder of it all. Highly recommended.

  3. This book changed my perspective on history and its photographs. I, too, am an "armchair traveler" whose formerly suppressed fascination with the past and travel has now been stirred up. Though I treasure the "travels" I made while viewing "Around the World..." the greatest impact it made on me was my renewed desire to value and preserve the few photographic momentos from my own family's history. Having come of age during the Internet and all of its endearing nuances, there is nothing to compare to our forebears' efforts to memorialize their lives. This book is a true gem.

  4. You almost feel like you took part in the various trips, which are illustrated by anonymous snapshots in this wonderful book. It takes you back in time, to a somehow easier, more adventurous life. Go down the Nile and visit the pyramids, travel by ship and play shuffleboard on deck, experience exotic adventures in the Orient. You will be enchanted with every turn of the page and perhaps inspired to create your own travel album during your next trip. 5 Stars!

  5. An hour with Around the World is like an afternoon in a beautifully curated exhibit on travel photography. As human beings, we are reminded that point and click had its origins long ago in our desire to turn the page and enter another world without ever leaving the comfort of our armchair. Turn off your monitors and open a page of this book! It's a delight!!

5 comments about Millennium Park: Creating a Chicago Landmark (Historical Studies of Urban America).

  1. This is a very richly detailed history with beautiful photos and excellent background on the many alternatives that were proposed over the years for the 25-acre site that has become a spectacular success story in urban revitalization.

  2. The avowed purpose of Millennium Park is to memorialize, via the reactions of ordinary citizens, the contribution this great city made to public art.

It works really well that way. Ordinary people who visit express consistent delight in what they see and experience, 365 days a year, in a city not known for friendly outdoor weather. So, this has been a success, despite the temptation to conclude that government-created art will inevitably be pedestrian (no pun intended) or bureaucratic in nature.

Debate the "art part" as much as you will - this place delights people, and this book helps us understand how that happens.

  3. For those who appreciate the City of Chicago, and have visited -- or are planning to visit -- the Millenniun Park on the Lakefront, the book explains in detail the evolution of the site, and why and how the current, impressing architectural, artistic and landscaping complex has been conceived and built. How it influences the view of the City from the Lake, and the urbanism of the whole area.

  4. This book is quite beautiful and contains a huge amount of information about the origins, creation and current use of Millennium Park in Chicago. I purchased it for a friend, as a hostess gift, when I went to visit her. Had I seen the book before purchasing it, I might not have done so, given its "textbook" quality. I'm not sure the casual reader would be interested in all the details provided but it certainly is an impressive collection of information.

  5. Beautiful pictures. Well-written descrption from its inception to conclusion, with good bibliography.

1 comments about Railway Stations: From the Gare de L'est to Penn Station.

  1. Railway fans always receive plenty of train books to contemplate - this offers a difference, focusing on the architecture and evolution of the railway station over 100 years of changing designs. Sixteen stations in nine countries are examined with an eye to considering historical precedent, the evolution of railway architecture, and the influence of station design on rail operations. Gorgeous, oversized full-page color photos capture the stations in profile, add charts where appropriate, and provides an exceptional visual display. Perfect not just for rail buffs, but for fans of transportation architecture in general.
