3. Understanding deconstructivist architecture can be daunting at first. Without delving into Jacques Derrida's complicated theories on Deconstructivism, this book offers a good overview from Russian Constructivism to Peter Eisenman's and Phillip Johnson's 1988 MoMA exhit - Deconstructivist Architecture.

   The only thing lacking is an update reflecting the current use of Deconstructivist architecture. Has the perception of what conotates Deconstructivist changed in the last decade? Is it now more of an aesthetic reference than a theoretical? A follow-up with the '88 exhibit participants and a more current perspective on the practice is left to be desired.

1. This small book presents a wealth of information for oil painters of all styles and techniques. Perhaps the most useful chapter is that which deals with the changing optical nature of pigment in various oils. Ever wonder why it never quite works to paint a new image over an old one or why an underdawing plays such a crucial role? This chapter explains why. Though old, this book has not become dated. It remains an excellent companion to Ralph Mayer's handbook and Robert Massey's _Formulas for Painters_, and like them, deserves to be in the bookcase of any serious painter.

1. This book, piecing together many uninteresting articles, is sort of cliche in architectural critism. They are not inspiring, not imaginative, not new, just words that have been repeated for thousands of times. Fortunately they are at least not wrong.

1. If this is a reprint or revised edition of Stephen Skinner's original book of the same name - published in 1982 by Routledge & Kegan Paul Ltd - then the reader is in for a special treat. I learned the principles of Feng Shui from a Chinese friend in the 1980s. Most of my instruction came in the form of gestures and drawings, as she spoke little English and I understood no Chinese. To augment what I considered a fascinating introduction to ancient principles little known in the U.S. at that time, I turned to the best (British) book I could find - Stephen Skinner's "The Living Earth Manual of Feng Shui."
   
   As the practice became popular (indeed, commercialized) in America, many systems were introduced here in simplified and sometimes questionable form. When I want to review a principle or discuss Feng Shui with a novice, I tend to pass over the various newer books on my shelves and turn once again to Skinner. My daughter and son-in-law have just bought a summer home that they plan to extensively remodel. My housewarming gift? A copy of the original edition of this sometimes obscure but overall illuminating book.
