  1. I would suggest you skip this one...the binding fell apart and the text, and quite frankly the houses, are just not that interesting.

1 comments about The Accessible Home: Updating Your Home for Changing Physical Needs.

  1. This book is packed with practical information for homeowners who want to do their own work in adapting their existing homes for the comfort, convenience, and safety of those with various kinds and degrees of physical disability. The how-to instructions are clearly written and well illustrated. It's less useful, however, for those of us who are looking for design inspiration and turning the actual labor over to professionals. Still, at the ridiculously low prices at which this book can be obtained, it's a handy reference work for those who want an off-line source of -- for example -- where and how high (and how many) grab bars should be installed to provide an ADA-appropriate bath or shower. Architects and contractors will turn to other sources, but DIYers will find value here.

3 comments about Eero Saarinen: Buildings from the Balthazar Korab Archive (Norton/Library of Congress Visual Sourcebooks in Architecture, Design & Engineering).

  1. Architectural photographer Balthazar Korab's practiced eye and hand lends striking images of the buildings and working methods of one Eero Saarinen, joining other photos of Modernist masterpieces with rare insights into his buildings, design, and models. Photographer Korab left Corbusier in 1954 to work in Saarinen's office, beginning a career of over fifty years as a photographer, so this is more than an outsider's collection: it's an insider's view of Saarinen's work and needs to be in any serious architectural library. A grouping by project and a chronological arrangement further lends to the book's value.

  2. In no way should this book be judge by it's Prints of the originals. They are prints what do you expect. If you had the honor of knowing this man and his family you would not be so judgmental of his book. My suggestion to you would be to actually try and meet him and purchase some of his original work. Once you see the beauty in his work you will forget about the graininess of the photos in the Saarinen book. As far as learning more about Balthazar Korab I suggest purchasing more books on this subject.I have had the pleasure of knowing this gentleman for around 30 years. He is not only a great Photographer, Architect, Master Gardner, Korab is a great human being and a inspiration to many. Someone coined the phrase "The Ansel Adams of the Architectural World". I would more than agree with that statement but Ansel Adams was not a Architect. Korab's art is disappearing thanks to the digital world and that is really sad to me. Soon the only place you will be able to see work like his is when you go to a museum. A true Master and a good friend DG your book is absolutely beautiful.
    c' est formidable

    Thank you
    Gib

  3. This book is a result of what happens when you take a great architect and match him with a great photographer. The pictures are comprehensive but the quality of the reproductions is grainy. The text leaves you wanting more.

  1. Why do I buy these books and hope that they will be good???? This was just ok and each house was more of the same old same old....save your money.

  2. This book is astonishingly good!

There is a unique tone to this book that engulfs you with wonderful images and a wonderful new perspective on design.

I found it helpful in understanding how design, personality and color can mesh so well together without having to give up comfort or require a large budget.

    Great find!

1 comments about Architectural Inspiration: Styles, Details and Sources.

  1. This book is an outstanding display of custom idea's for the entire home. The photo's bring to life 1000's of interior and exterior shots, that give you idea's from all over North America. Different styles, materials, concepts, roof lines, sidings and unique designs are fully explored throughout the book. If you want idea's while building a custom home, that are state of the art, and displayed with beautiful photographic pictures that you can build from, this is an excellent book to have. The text fully explains the use of materials and explain sections of the pictures that I would not generally have seen. I have only just received my copy of Architectural Inspirational and have received some excellent feedback from my friends and neighbours whom I have shared my recent purchase.

3 comments about The Houseboat Book.

  1. This book is beautifully done. Marvelous pictures and descriptions of a variety of houseboats. It gives real insight into a lifestyle that few of us will ever experience. Someday I hope to become a part of this very small but extremely interesting lifestyle...

  2. Awesome -- That's all I can say. If you're interested in houseboats for any reason, this is your book.
History, information, great writing, and awesome photography! This one interests everyone.
    Great coffee table book.
Kathy -- neighbor to "The Lindner House" featured in the book.
p.s. If you live in the Portland, Sausalito, or Seattle Houseboat communities, you will especially enjoy this book.

  3. I gave this book to a few close friends for the holidays. I have never had such great feedback about a giftbook. The book is not only beautiful to look at, but it contains such great details, history, and stories about houseboats and their owners. I definitely give this 5 stars!! I look forward to Flanagan's next book!

5 comments about The Tower and the Bridge.

  1. From my own experience, I've always been frustrated with the tendency of the architecture community to either completely overlook the aesthetic works of the great structural engineers or shamelessly claim them as their own. This book is beyond a simple consensus of great engineering works; it is Billington's clear and rational case for the distinction of the discipline of Structural Art - the engineer's means of expression - from that of Architecture.

This book is just the thing any student or young professional in structural engineering should have along with their library of technical books. Instead of explaining the aesthetics and beauty of structures in vague architectural terms, Billington looks at them in terms of the technical (formwork, stress diagrams, material economy, etc.). When has an architectural critic discussed the elegance behind a moment diagram?

I think anyone who loves architecture and great works of engineering will appreciate this book. If you like this, I would also recommend Billington's 'Robert Maillart and the Art of Reinforced Concrete' and Salvadori's 'Why Buildings Stand Up'.

  2. Billington goes through the evolution of structural art/expressionism in great detail. It is helpful to have a preexisting knowledge about the various engineers/artist discussed in this text, however, it is not necessary. This book is very interesting and encourages the engineer to consider the aesthetic consequences of structures.

It is an inspiring book to read (and re-read) and is packed full of historical bridges and other structures (like thin concrete shells). I highly recommend it to engineering students with an interest in structures.

  3. It is not a book only for engineerings, for all architects, artists and commen people, for those who cares about the decline of our man-made surroundings, itis quite worth to read! The thinking about the relationship between the structures and the democracy is also very believable.

  4. This book has engaged my artistic mind in the search for opportunities to become such a designer as the individuals biographed so explicitly by Billington. The unseeming artist, architect, or engineer is left believing that even he/she has the potential to add to the realm of amazing structures. An inspiring read.

  5. Billington adds a whole new dimension to engineering by interpreting a scientific discipline in a subjective light. He offers criteria for aesthetic appreciation and brings forth the subtleties in an otherwise inaccessible field. Well written and unintimidating to even the most science-phobic reader.

1 comments about San Francisco Art Deco (Images of America).

  1. The Art Deco period began in the mid 1920s and lasted for 20 years, producing a wealth of buildings all around San Francisco during the Roaring Twenties. This volume of vintage photos gathers a display of the art deco architecture of the times, packing in a range of building fronts, advertisements, and more. A highly recommended pick for any California history or art library alike.
