5 comments about 25 Houses Under 2,500 Square Feet.
- As with everything else from this author, it is just a collection of pretty pictures, with absolutely no detail on materials and construction techniques. There is a reason his books are so cheap.
- This book shows some nice homes but, the point of the book is not based on design but on square footage. So if your looking for a book based on design only, u might try another book
- Book had alot of cool homes, most seemed like vacation/guest houses though. Only problem I have with the book is the binding wasn't terribly strong. After lying it out and people looking thru it a few times the spine is broken.
Small thing, good content
- The houses presented in this book are great but I would not define them as small! Indeed this is a joke: in my opinion, a 2500 sq.ft. one-bedroom house is huge. Only a few of them are real family homes that one can live in.
The presentation and format is great but more technical info (besides floorplans which are great) would be appreciated.
In short, a beautiful book which requires some housework to get useful ideas out of it.
- 25 Houses is an overall good book for the layperson. It's successful in showing that well-designed custom homes don't always have to be enormous. However, it lacks in depth for those who are looking for "how it was done". This book would really shine if there was information about materials used, custom details or the inspiration behind the designs.
Also, there are a few examples of ordinary houses that, in my opinion, shouldn't be in this publication.

1 comments about The Elements of Design: A Practical Encyclopedia of the Decorative Arts from the Renaissance to the Present.
- This is a MUST HAVE for interior designers. The pictures are quite detailed. It is written in chronological order and takes you through all the design periods (including, but not limited to: Baroque, Rococo, Arts & Crafts, Art Nouveau, Art Deco) It explains and shows examples of furniture, ceramics, glass, silver, textiles, lighting (to name a few)from each period from 1400-2000.
It is one of the MOST IMPORTANT reference books to have in your library. Especially to be able to explain certain things to clients. I recommend having it. IT IS A BEAUTIFUL BOOK. EVEN IF YOU ARE NOT A DESIGNER, GET IT FOR YOUR COFFEE TABLE...YOU WILL ENJOY LOOKING AT IT!

3 comments about Discrete Choice Analysis: Theory and Application to Travel Demand (Transportation Studies).
- Very good book by the top scientist in the field of transport demand modeling. Useful to have it in the library if you are a professional.
- Two knowledgable authors gave in-depth treatments on the subject of DCM. The math is fairly easy to follow in most places. The biggest strength is a nice combination of theoretical and practical issues. The readers however should be benefitted from a new edition, which should include, among other things, extended exposures on ordered responses and grouped/aggregated data analyses with DCM. An introduction to the existing software and relevant issues should also be a plus.
- This book is intended for serious graduate students who wish to learn demand analysis. This book is used as a text for the demand analysis course at MIT for 1st/2nd year grad students. Rigorous statistical and econometric background is a must preparation for this book. Includes very crisp and elegant proofs and dicussion. Impressive methodological treatment for demand analysis. Although all examples are drawn from the Transportation field, the content can easily be implemented for Marketing Science and other fields.

3 comments about Masonry Design and Detailing.
- If you want to build more than a backyard wall or barbeque, the information contained here will put you on the right track. Most masons will follow a building plan, but this book gives the framework for the plans. This text will cover in depth structural design and problem solving associated with layout, material, and construction of masonry structures.
- As the previous reviewer, I also am a structural engineer and have not found the book to be very useful for my line of work. It does have some nice details and empirical information that would probably be useful for architects and contractors.
- I found the masonry details to be very good in showing how a masonry building goes together and as such would be very good for Architects and Contractors. However, as a Structural Engineer I was looking for a book with more detail regarding the design methods and equations. I was looking for a book that would teach a beginning engineer the basics of masonry design. After the engineer had mastered the basics and could design a masonry building using the equations then, with that understanding and experience, could make use of the design tables in this book.
We have this book in our library and I can say that it is seldom used. We design masonry buildings using hand calculations, the UBC and computer programs.
Bottom line is that this book is great for Architects and Contractors building small masonry structures. It is not as useful for the serious Structural engineer.

4 comments about Irving J. Gill: Architect, 1870 - 1936.
- The photographs are wonderful. Unfortunately, Mr. Rand has not done his research. He misidentified houses, their dates of construction and owners. His book is filled with works by authors already published some years ago. It is a cobbling of misinformation and script available elsewhere. It looks thrown together. There is no index. I cannot recommend this book.
- When you look at Irving Gill's work, you can almost feel the southern california sunshine and the ocean breezes caressing your skin. I for one love his work, expecially his Art Deco white houses, they just exude cool. This book is a wonderful tribute to the man and his work. The text is highly informative and the images are crisp and vivid. If you have any interest in southern california shiek or just talented people and their art, then I believe you will not be disappointed in this work.
- I just received this book in the mail. It is a great accompaniment to the "Architecture of Reform" book especially because this book has beautiful large color photographs! Great book!
- This is a beautiful book of Marvin Rand's particular photo-stylistic vision of Gill's work, although it is very limited on written information. I would also recommend the fantastic Thomas Hines "Irving Gill and the Architecture of Reform," as well as the absolutely-required Esther McCoy "Five California Architects" as compliments to Rand's photos. In the end, it's about Gill's stunningly simple and beautiful work. The images, the details, the lost masterpieces (Dodge House), etc. are all wonderfully captured here. I waited nearly a year to get this book, and I was not disappointed. That said, anything on the California modernist pioneers is generally an interesting book purchase. Recommended for fans of Richard Neutra, Gregory Ain as well as the pipe-smoking American Bungalow set.

2 comments about The Face of Home: A New Way to Look at the Outside of Your House.
- I bought this book online so I never had good look inside before I bought it . There are a few the thoughts fit with my idea of what a nice house is but then there where more ideas where I would be saying huh, what...that does not look so good.
My advice is to get a good look inside the book before you buy it.
- First, I should say that Jeremiah Eck is my favorite architect. If I ever build a house (which is hard, because I live in Boston where there are essentially no lots), I'll probably use him as an architect. So I should love this book, and I mostly do. Ideally, I'd like an architecture book to:
1) have lots of great pictures and floor plans of wonderful houses
2) have interesting ideas to convey
3) have good prose to read
I'd say this book scores very well on the first two points, and less so on the third. The photography is excellent, with lots of great houses. Mr. Eck is trying to convey some important ideas about the exterior of a house. Ideally, he things the exterior of a house should have a style that follows from other elements of the design, rather than being superficial decoration. So on the strength of those reasons alone, you should buy it. But for some reason I find his prose hard going. I can't quite put my finger on what bothers me, but it doesn't pull you forward. I found this to be true of his first book, "The Distinctive Home" as well. I'm very pleased I read it anyway.

- After having tried a number of different publishers and autors on modern architecture I always come back to Philip Jobidio amd Taschen. Very tasteful selection, great pictures, helpful CAD drawings, best optical appearance. And best of all: great price.
- Splendid overview of contemporary American architecture featuring the work of 17 architects including my husband, Michael Jantzen!
