5 comments about For the Love of Old: Living with Chipped, Frayed, Tarnished, Faded, Tattered, Worn and Weathered Things that Bring Comfort, Character and Joy to the Places We Call Home.
- Oh Mary...........we love you so.
The book is an inspiration to us all. I can only get through a couple of pages before I have to head for the nearest "junk" or antique shop to get a fix.
If you like this book, you will like all of her great books. You will not be disappointed.
I can't wait for the next one to come out!
Hurry, Mary.......we can hardly wait.
- I received this as a gift on Christmas. The cover was absolutely lovely. I couldn't wait to look inside. YIKES! The photographer did a terrific job, the book itself is very pretty, great colors, could make a lovely coffee table book. However the content is TERRIBLE!!! . I agree with the reviewer that all those pictures of the tatered dolls and other items/artifacts are very creepy indeed. Frankly it just looks messy, gloomy & dusty. I adore old things, books, beautiful photographs and antiques but this book is horrible. Unless you have seen this book in person and like it, DO NOT waste your money. I cannot imagine paying 50 dollars or even the amazon discounted rate. Buyer Beware on this one....
- I always love this author's books even though she tends to decorate even shabbier than I do. This particular book is just a work of beauty for the coffee table, I love the cover. There is a blue opera chair inside that tears at my heart with its beauty. I love inside the covers, the way she tells a story about her family and about why she sees beauty in some of the most beastly things. It is always interesting to see how others decorate and I believe Ms. Randolph-Carter is a green decorator indeed, taking recycling of old things to a new level.
- This book is beautiful. It is a coffe table copy. One you want to use for display. I was drawn with interest to someone who sees beauty in such old things. The book is very unique. I'm glad I have a copy.
- I loved Mary Randolph Carter's book American Family Style so much and this book seemed to me like a part two of that original book. Although this book wasn't filled with pictures of her family it was filled with the same warmth and comfort as the original. Even though it may not be filled with exactly the things I might put in my own home it is something I enjoy reading. You can tell the author truly LOVES these lost, rusty, beautiful things. I truly can appreciate that.

3 comments about Gardens of Russell Page, The.
- I had a glance at this book some fithteen years ago in o book-store and... I didn't buy it! My interest in garden design was fairly recent I thought "I can't buy every book on the topic". But the name and the images keept haunting me as other writers referred to Mr Page and pictures of some of his gardens flickered by. By then the book was out of print and unavailable alas. So one snowy day I went to a second-hand book-seller and there it was in the window! I got it instantly and spent the next weeks travelling to England, Italy, USA and his other places of work over and over again, slowly turning the pages of this book. If you have an interest in classical gardens of the Renaissance and Baroque - here is the modern version of their ideals to make you gasp. But it doesn't stop there; wood-lands, ponds and pools, Arab-style and more are to be found in excellent photos. The Italian projects (La Landriana, Villa Silvio Pellico, La Mortella e.g.) are perhaps the most famous ones. They are showed of course, along with the best kept of the many places he designed (far from all his gardens have survived to the present). This is actually the only book on a single designer that I've felt I've had to own. But then I am a lover of classical art and design...
- No words to describe this genius!.How as a landscape gardener, could I have taken ten years to discover his works!!.He is obviously and sadly unknown for his contribution to timeless gardening. This is the "Bible" of landscape gardening, and he is the Van Gogh of gardeners. How can such a valuble and essential book be unavailable!?
- I hadn't even heard of Russell page until I perchanced upon this book in my local bookstore some 5 years ago. I was moved to tears by some of the photographs, and that doesn't happen easily to me. The man was a genius, clear and simple, and his designs reached out and spoke to me in a way very few designers ever have. In my own landscapes, I have been immensely influenced by Russell Page, both through this wonderful book, and his own 'Education of a gardener'. This book is superbly illustrated with colour photographs throughout. The photography is excellent, and the written descriptions are well penned, informative, decriptive but not too long-winded. My copy of this book would be on my list of my top ten material possessions.

2 comments about Infinity Pools.
- I purchased this book to get an idea of infinity pool designs. Really it's more of a coffee table book. The pictures are beautiful, but it's very difficult to really assess what the pools look like as the pictures are more artistic than technical. The photo assignment for this book must've been a blast as the pictures are from luxury locations around the world.
- Infinity pools, sometimes called infinity edge pool is a pool that has one or more edges of the book being submerged below water level so that the water surface merges with the horizon, providing the illusion of an infinite plane. As seen in this book this effect is particularly impressive when the invisible edge is set against a larger body of wter such as the ocean, or perched on an elevated so that the sky becomes the backdrop.
This is an expensive pool, with the requirement for a trench to collect the water escaping over the submerged edge and then for a pump that will recirculate the water into the main pool. But when it is done correctly by skilled designers and contractors, the result is often stunning.
This book pictures and describes thirty houses from literally around the world that incorporate infinity pools into their design. The book is beautifully photographed and printed and will serve as an idea book for architects and their customers.

1 comments about Integrated Practice in Architecture: Mastering Design-Build, Fast-Track, and Building Information Modeling.
- The term "integrated practice" was quickly dispatched in 2007 when the California Council of the AIA presented "Integrated Project Delivery - A Working Definition" at the AIA National Convention - and for good reason. Integrated practice is an internal affair for each of the Owner, Architect and Contractor. Integrated Project Delivery brings all parties involved in the development of a project into the discussion. In addition, for the time being - and for some time into the future - any practice is going to involve both traditional and integrated project delivery. Finally, I found the book confusing in the way it tends to equate BIM with Integrated Practice, when the two are certainly seperable, if not independent. I don't know of a better book out there at present, but I wish I'd waited for one before buying.

1 comments about Designing & Building: Rockhill And Associates.
- Designing And Building from the collective works of Kansas architectural firm of Rockhill and Associates is a truly incredible and conceptually impressive compendium of writings, photographs, blueprints, along with cogent analysis of many truly remarkable buildings. As awe-inspiring as a book on architecture may be, Designing And Building also offers its readers an artistic approach to the intricacies of what beauty may be presented in modern buildings and their architectural elements. as innate works of art in their own right. A welcome addition to professional and academic library Architectural Studies collections, Designing And Building is an intuitive and informative introduction to progressive and subversive modern design, very strongly recommended to all architectural designers, as well as photographers and students of the visual arts.

2 comments about India Contemporary.
- I have a number of design books and was excited to order this one to add to my range. What a disappointment. The title is misleading. It should be called India Bad Taste. It is full of gaudy over the top rooms and there are only brief shimmers of good design. The best shot by far, is the one on the cover.
- Featuring a thoroughly 'reader friendly' text that is enhanced with 261 colored illustrations, "India Contemporary" by Henry Wilson is a compendium of commentary and examples of interior designs and design elements that are breathtakingly beauty in their exotic compositions. These are samples and examples of interior design that are radically modern while hauntingly traditional, evoking the traditional crafts of the Indian subcontinent and wonderfully demonstrate the international appeal of uniquely Indian design sensibilities. As informed and informative as it is inspired and inspiring, "India Contemporary" should be considered 'must' reading for student designers, and a highly recommended reference for professional, academic, and community library Interior Design collections.

1 comments about Timeless Living.
- All of these Belgian design books are terrific and this one is a compendium of the decade from 1995 to 2005. Spare but not minimalist rooms are shown therein. The houses look so peaceful and serene but most need to have at least some art on the walls. Mostly beige/cream interiors but the couple that are burgundy stand out but not in a good way. I would highly recommend all of the Pauwels series.

2 comments about Scandinavian Country.
- This is a most fantastic book to buy if you love Scandinavian-style interiors. Don't let the title fool you, Scandinavian country style is not so "country"! Some of the featured homes are beautifully traditional in design. Many are modern and clean-lined. So fantastic! You don't have to get stuck with an ultra-traditional country look just because you like a more relaxed style of living.
- If you just like to collect Inferior Desecrater books... hey, get two.
Otherwise, don't waste your money.
