1 comments about Old Stained Glass for the Home: A Guide for Collectors and Designers (Schiffer Book for Collectors).

  1. I LOVE this stained glass book. It has hundreds of color photos of stained glass windows in countless styles, from prairie to etched to bevels to antique "factory" English, English muffle, and a lot more. This is an awesome reference tool for designs for making your own stained glass windows, and its just fun to look at. You can't go wrong with this book - it should be a "must-have" for every person who is seriously interested in the craft of stained glass.

The book is great; the price is NOT. It used to be $10 here on Amazon and now it costs the full cover price! I was just about to buy one as a gift and now I've changed my mind. So that's a bummer - I would look elsewhere to try and find a better deal. You might as well buy it in a regular bookstore and not have to deal with waiting for it to ship and stuff.

2 comments about Treasure Hunting for Fun and Profit (Treasure Hunting Text).

  1. In the hobby of metal detecting the changes come in use of better technology and understanding and interpreting how these technological advances impact the results in the field.
With more than thirty years of practice in the hobby of metal detecting I have often read these basic princples as espoused by Charles Garrett and in truth they are always worth repeating. There is little advantage to investing in a top end metal detector or any metal detector for that matter if you do not understand and practice the techniques necessary to provide optimum results.
This book repeats these fundamentals in relation to modern equipment. Nothing more and nothing less. The author does not pretend or imply that these topics have not been previously touched upon in other books.
This book has tremendous value for the novice treasure hunter and provides updated reference to the seasoned metal detector user.

  2. The reason for the low rating is because this book is a repeat of Mr Garrett's book,"Let's Talk Treasure Hunting" which was first printed in 1992. Chapters and wording of "Treasure Hunting for Fun and Profit is practically identical. If you buy either book, there is no need to buy the other. These books have some information on the technics of metal detecting, but is more focused in the end in describing the kind of metal detector to use which is the Garrett detector...which is a great metal detector!

5 comments about Blue Book Dolls and Values, 16th Edition (Blue Book Dolls and Values).

  1. Very helpful book - have really been enjoying this book as I have wanted this book for years, finally got it!

  2. I bought this book to help me determine the value of a collection of high quality dolls that my aunt wants to help her sell. Our of five doll designers, only one of the designers was even listed in her book. This was a waste of my money, for sure!

  3. I am formilair with this book. It is a great book IF you know the name of your doll. If you don't it is not a good one for you.

  4. THE resource for all your doll questions on values and dolls.

  5. Although the Blue Book is the avid doll collectors' favorite price guide, it contains numerous categories that have not been updated for quite a number of years. China, parian, papier mache, and wooden, some of the earliest dolls in existence, have been gaining in popularity for several years now and the market prices, both at auction and online have been rising considerably. The Blue Book has not caught up with this trend.

Also, it would be extremely helpful if there were a comprehensive section that described the methods used in compiling the information as well as the sources of this information. Some of the prices are so far off the mark in actual market prices realized, that it makes the professional wonder if the numbers are merely picked out of blue sky.

The book is well structured and is the easiest to use on a daily basis, of all the price guides, however, serious updating and a description of the price compilation process, would improve it immensely.

2 comments about Arts and Crafts (Dk Collector's Guides).

  1. I think the Judith Miller books are very clearly set out and give a good, quick 'flavour' of a lot of the major designers and names for the arts and craft period.

She doesn't go into any depth (with only 1 or 2 pages per person, she doesn't really have the space to) and some of the text is repetitive but it is clearly presented with good photos and would allow you to look up further on the people you find interesting.

  2. I first became aware of the Arts & Crafts movement of William Morris and his circle back in the late 1960s, when Art Nouveau (an outgrowth of Arts & Crafts) was enjoying a renaissance. I ended up with several pieces of Arts & Crafts-style furniture (replicas, naturally, on my graduate school budget), some poster (reprints) and a couple of affordable ceramics (original). And I made a point thereafter of searching out museum collections and galleries specializing in this stuff. I still have a preference for the clean lines of furniture and the luminescent glazes on pots, especially those by Pilkington and Rookwood. Miller has brought together in this beautifully produced volume more than a thousand examples of design and craft, with detailed descriptions and notes and a list of "Key Features" for various artists and studios. Approximate values also are included, though I'm happy just to look at the pictures. If you're trying to learn about the Arts & Crafts movement, this would be a good visual textbook.

3 comments about Light of India: A Conflagration of Indian Matchbox Art.

  1. This is small but bold little book. The collection of images of matchboxes are colourful, humourous, curious and extremely entertaining. A must have for anyone interested in Indian graphics.

  2. Light of India has great pictures of matchbook artwork. I am inspired by the colors

  3. Warren Dotz's "Light of India: A conflagration of Indian matchbox art" is a fascinating little gift or coffee table book. It starts out exploring the origins of the matchbox industry in India, its practical and cultural place in history. From there it branches into an impressive exploration of the art that adorns Indian matchboxes--starting with those imported from other countries, and progressing through those made in India by Indian artists in later years.

While the images themselves are beautiful and fascinating to look at, every bit as fascinating is the discussion that goes with each section. The images on matchboxes changed with the times, reflecting cultural trends, history, politics, national hopes and fears, and more. What started out for me as a fun look at matchbox art became an engrossing read on Indian cultural heroes, Gandhi's work, religious beliefs and iconography, and even Indian wildlife, foods, and architecture.

2 comments about Gnomes.

  1. If you want to see a lot of different styles of gnomes, a lot of gnomes grouped together and all the crazy ways people collect and put gnomes in their yards, this is the book for you. This is not a book so much about the fantasy species of Gnome, but about actual garden gnomes - the statue kind. It does have information in it about both garden gnome statuary and "real" gnomes. It discusses the gnomes as if they are sentient while still acknowledging that they are statues. Learn about the garden gnome sanctuary in England and gnome holidays and learn that, if you are crazy about garden gnomes, you are not alone!

  2. Gnomes were originally introduced into gardens to enhance their appearance but you can now find gardens where the gnomes, rather than the vegetation, are the focal point. In this book, the author-photographer provides an introductory text giving a brief history of gnomes before treating us to an impressive display of photographs, all in color, that clearly illustrate why so many people love gnomes. It seems that the best place to see traditional gnomes is Sweden but it is in Britain where gnome culture is strongest.

Gnomes clearly work hard without complaint - they can be seen mowing the lawn and pushing wheelbarrows, always looking happy while going about their business. Another picture shows a gnome climbing a telegraph pole using a rope or pulley. Several pictures show them fishing while one captures the moment when a gnome is reeling in a catch.

The author clearly loves gnomes but is perhaps less fanatical than the woman who set up the gnome reserve in Devon, England, which was the setting for a significant number of the photographs. I have visited Devon many times (though mostly long, long ago) and I've seen many of its attractions including the monkey reserve but I didn't know about the gnome reserve. The book does not give exact locations of any of the gnomes featured in the book (for fear of theft or vandalism) but if the Devon gnome reserve is open to the public, this book will certainly increase public interest on it.

If you love gnomes, you will find this book irresistible. If not, perhaps this review will persuade you that gnomes have more to offer than you imagined.

1 comments about Accurizing the Factory Rifle.

  1. This is a great book. It is a step or two above others I have read, offering creative insights on accurizing your rifle. If you have a lever action rifle this is the book for you! I have read next to no material whatsoever on modifying lever action rifles. This book goes into great detail on issues that rob acuracy and how to fix them. It is organized very well and should be very easy to find just the tip you need. There are lots of pictures to help out the written explainations as well. I did find myself wanting to see more usfeful diagrams though.
This is a must have for any gunsmithing library!
