3 comments about Lanterns That Lit Our World: Old Railroad, Marine, Fire, Carriage, Farm & Other Lanterns (Book 2).

  1. Very well put together book. Well organized and written as to be informative and INTERESTING at the same time.

  2. As Mr. Hobsons girlfriend I find it offencive that someone tried to use me to degrade his name. Tony researched this book for over 2 years. As a person that never knew anything about lanterns I found this book very informative. It was clearly written with pictures that made it very easy to identify lanterns in ones possession. Well done Tony.

5 comments about Beaded Jewelry with Found Objects: Incorporate Anything from Buttons to Shells.

  1. I have mixed feelings about this book. I liked the projects on beading around freeform crystals and seaglass. The beaded eyeglass and small bottles were also great. There are a few other quirky beaded items, but the rest of the book is useless. I should say I am an advanced beader, so the many projects on beading around a simple bezel don't interest me. So, if you're a mid to advanced beader, there isn't that much new.

  2. I was very pleased to find this book! Basic instructions for right angle weave that are easy to follow, Ladder Stitch, Even Number Flat Peyote, Vertical Netting (or Lattice Weave,) Back Stitching and Couching.
Good Chapter for Straps, Necklaces and Fringe WITH PICTURE INSTRUCTIONS. Lots of ideas for odd ball beads and not beads that you can use in your beadwork.

It has a Wonderful Chapter (4) on Beading cabochons with some fresh Unique ideas for beaded straps and the stones. One is done with a Amethyst crystal wedge. Very clear instructions. She has some pictures of beaded brooches made with doughnuts and disks embellished with with beads that start in the center and work their way to the edges that I find inspiring. SHe even beaded a Magnifying Glass Necklace!

  3. I found this book by accident while searching for beadwork books on Amazon.com and I'm soooooo glad I did! It includes many techniques for incorporating a variety of things into your beadwork and rather than offering only one design solution it gives lots of options. For example, I especially appreciated the inclusion of techniques for incorporating cabochons and larger found objects such as rocks and slabs without using the technique of gluing the object to a backing and couching around it but rather using beadwork exclusively to capture the object. Lots of eye-candy and interesting suggestions. This turned out to be a better all-around book of techniques than I expected it to be and I know I will refer to it often. It does have lots of projects in it if you want to just follow along and more or less copy them, but it also gives different techniques for straps, focals, etc. so you can mix and match them. I wish more beading books were like this one -- it really helps to expand a beader's design options!

  4. This book is a keeper. The projects are delightful and instructions are clear. With Carole's pointers in mind, there are so many places to look other than bead shops for findings and inspiration. In addition, the book describes new ways of using old stitches that leave the reader with ideas of her own to pursue. Included are pictures of what other bead artists have done using the instructions from this book as a springboard for their ideas. "Beaded Jewelry with Found Objects" is a treasure for anyone who loves beading, and just looking through it is fun. Warning: looking through this book will leave you twitching to start a new beady project ... okay, okay, it'll leave you twitching to start A LOT of new beady projects.

  5. I passed by this book a few times but I needed a bead book fix so I ordered and I'm happy I did. The designs are imaginative and there is a wealth of techniques to try. They are explained well with excellent diagrams. Lots of eye candy to boot.

2 comments about Antique Trader Clocks Price Guide: Including All Types of Clocks-17th Through 20th Century (Antique Trader Clocks Price Guide).

  1. This book has some wonderful pictures. I think some of the values are dated, but the pictures and examples were very useful to me.

  2. A brave title with "ALL Types of Clocks" and it disappointed as it did not include many (if any) small Boudoir Clocks. Few 20th Century clocks only 1 electric clock. Few mentions of swiss clocks of note. NO INDEX - what sort of book dose not have an index.

Like many American authors - if it does not happen in the USA it does not happen.

I would not recommend this book to those who collect clocks from "the world" as the world is greater than the USA.

3 comments about American Silversmiths and Their Marks: The Definitive (1948) Edition (1948 Edition).

  1. Although limited in periods covered (stops at 1850), this is a handy, easy to carry reference. Kovel's may be more extensive, but the additional info is often not what you need in the middle of the antique mall checking out a possible purchase. I find I use both, write notes in both, and have many pieces I know are American and I can't find the marks in either. So, what the heck, for ten bucks it's worth having with you BEFORE you buy.

  2. For the time period covered (1650-1850) this is a very useful, almost exhaustive reference. I turn to it when I need to identify a hallmark, and find the illustrations to be very helpful. I thought it was a good buy.

  3. Not until you open the book to the first chapter do you find out that the marks are limited to the period 1650--1850. No marks after 1850.

5 comments about 20th Century Costume Jewelry 1900-1980: Identification & Value Guide (20th Century Costume Jewelry).

  1. This book would have benefitted from a lot more research and from inclusion of pieces other than the personal collection of Ms. Aikins and her mother. There are numerous incorrect dates - the most glaring of which consist of labelling aurora borealis pieces as being from the 40's or even 30's when the process didn't exist until about 1953. The descriptions are too "cutesy" rather than factual - ex labelling yellow and black pieces "for Steelers fans" and elephants "for Republicans." Some necklaces are measured by hanging length, others apparently by total length. The list goes on and on. It certainly would be a bad choice for a beginner to rely on, and a more seasoned collector would find it maddening. Give this one a pass.

  2. Jewelry can be an ideal addition to any outfit to add class, and "20th Century Costume Jewelry: Second Edition Identification & Value Guide" is a complete and comprehensive guidebook for anyone who is collecting these kinds of pieces for their own personal use or simply as a hobby. Filled cover to cover with full cover photos, descriptions of each piece, information on rarity, price, and so much more, "20th Century Costume Jewelry: Second Edition Identification & Value Guide" is a must for any hobbyist collector or community library collection catering to them.

  3. I recieved this book today, and for the first time ever, I am returning a book to Amazon. I was expecting beautiful Jewelry from the 1900's onwards. What is in the book, is 15 pages of AB glass necklaces, umpteen pins/brooches necklaces etc that I would have bypassed at a yard sale, not to mention many pages pages of low quality pieces with HUGE unrealistic valuation prices. Very misleading for a novice collector, they will think that a cheesy 10 year old christmas bell brooch is really worth over $80! No war time sterling, no quality Trifari,Coro, Boucher, Mazer etc. I don't wish to sound mean but in this day and age of umpteen Jewelry books being published these ladies really need to up their game to a much higher standard. Save your money, DO NOT BUY.

  4. I found this book to contain a beautiful collection of rare vintage pieces. To put down a book of this caliber displays an absolute absence of taste and appreciation of the collector, and the collected. Touche, touche! It seems there are many amateur collectors, with strong words and uneducated opinions.

  5. Thank you Amazon for offering this wonderful book. I plan to spend a lot of time with it.
It has been very helpful and the price is well worth it.
    Thank You,sanklo.

3 comments about The Big Book of Massey Tractors: The Complete History of Massey-Harris and Massey Ferguson Tractors...Plus Collectibles, Sales Memorabilia, and Brochures.

  1. product exactly as described - very informative. makes a great gift for any massey buff!

  2. This is basically a worthwhile book and provides an excellent history of the development of Massey Harris.
The background for each branch of the company is detailed and gives insight into the founders' thinking and lives. New insight into the Harry Ferguson connection and Harry himself was especially interesting to me. I would like to have more detail and insight for the later company leaders.
The tractors for the most part are covered adequately, especially the early models. Many of the later models were not covered in much detail. For example the 100 series is sketched only broadly. It is so brief(for the 135) it gives incorrect information and leaves a misleading view of this tractor. The engine options are missed, including the change to the Perkins 3 cylinder gas engine. The photograph for the 135 is a golf course model.
In general the photographs throughout the book are excellent.
As with most tractor books there are errors. In this book the most glaring are related to photo descriptions. Page 194 shows a garden tractor with a belly mower, but the caption refers to a rototiller and sickle mower. Page 199 shows a tractor pulling a wagon but the caption says it is pulling a combine. There several other mislabled photos.
Even with these editing problems this Big Book is worth reading.

  3. I got this book for my husband. So he is the expert on whether it is good or not. He thoroughly enjoyed the publication. Illustrations are excellent. Written material is good
