5 comments about Avon's 1876 Cape Cod Collection: Glass Dinnerware (Schiffer Book for Collectors).

  1. After collecting Avon products for over 50 years, this book is very good in
identifying and appraising the value of a full collection of the Cape Cod series. Very useful!

  2. I bought this book with the idea that it would be a valuable resource for me when I sell some of my collectibles. While I did find most of my items and the current market value is there for me to sell or get insurance, the one thing I needed most was the issue price. I have no clue as to what I paid 25 years ago. No one thought to keep receipts back then. Since these items are considered collectible, IRS regulations require that it be reported on Schedule D and you pay tax on the gain. If you have no idea as to the cost, you end up paying tax on 100% of the sale price! Who wants to do that!!! If this book contained the issue price, that could be used as a cost basis.

  3. I love this book. Now I can have an idea what to pay for these items.

  4. This book is wonderful! It has beautiful photographs and price estimates for each piece! I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in collecting the 1876 Cape Cod Collection!

  5. The subject book is very well illustrated with actual photographs. The descriptions of each item are not consistent throughout. In some places dimensions are entered in fractions while in other places they are entered as decimals. We purchased the book to satisfy an insurance claim. Dimensions was one of the insurance requirements; however, none of the items in the book have their original cost which was also another requirement of the insurance forms.

4 comments about Hot Wheels The Ultimate Redline Guide Companion: Identification and Values 1968 - 1977 (Hot Wheels the Ultimate Redline Guide).

  1. I am an avid redline hot wheel collector. I am very disappointed with this book. It does not cover redline hot wheels. This is not the book for true redline collectors. It covers farbs, gran toros, hotlines, hot shots, mean machines, rumblers, sizzlers, small shots, and zowees. Not even close to a redline guide, like the title describes. The second edition, written in May 2005 is still the most current guide out on the market. This guide stinks. It is useless for the true redline collector who wishes to see the latest updated information on redline hot wheels.

  2. It's an amazing book of the Hot Wheels early years !! I'm discovering several unknow toys each page ! I Recomend a lot !

  3. Don't let the title fool you, Hot Wheels the Ultimate Redline Guide Companion covers much more than just Redlines. It does adhere to the period of 1968 - 1977, but it covers a whole host of Hot Wheels products produced during that period including Chopcycles, Hot Birds, Hot Shots, RRRumblers, SmallShots, Zowees, and a new chapter in this second edition on Gran Toros. As with all every title from Collector Books the production is first rate with very colorful and sharp photography all in a heavy duty hard cover book. The usual matter on things like grading and pricing leads things off before we get into the first of over a dozen different chapters on various Hot Wheels lines and accessories.

Each chapter opens with a bit of history and reference information about that particular line of Hot Wheels such as the year the line was introduced, how many vehicles were in each series, etc...The Gran Toros section is particularly interesting as this joint venture between Mattel and Mebetoys of Italy is largely unknown to all but the most avid Hot Wheels collectors and is a welcome addition to the guide. This is a truly beautiful line featuring vehicles such as the Lamborghini Miura, Mustang Boss 302, Porsche Carrera 10, and the Ferrari P4.

The Sizzlers section shows an overview of the cars and then shows each car on its own page with a large close-up view, and then with several smaller pictures displaying some of the various color variations for each car along with a price grade table for mint loose cars and MIP cars. Each car again features background into on the model, noting specific features about each such if it came with decals or not. It's interesting to note that often there isn't a great deal of difference between the price on a loose mint car and one in the package. It certainly differs by the model and the disparity is greater on the cars which are more rare, of course.

One thing I loved about the Sizzlers section was all the photos of the great accessories such as the various track sets. These show a picture of the packaging along with a checklist of all of the components in the set which is very useful. This book is a great reference title for any level of Hot Wheels collector and the photography is second to none.

  4. Jack Clark and Robert P. Wicker's HOT WHEELS: THE ULTIMATE REDLINE GUIDE COMPANION pairs fine color photos of hot wheels issues with identification and values keys for the toy collector's cars from 1968-77. From limited spin-offs to model series designs, this HOT WHEELS guide is a fine history and values pairing and is a top pick for any collector's library.

4 comments about The Official Price Guide to Disney Collectibles, Second Edition (Official Price Guide to Disney Collectibles).

  1. This is a fantastic book for Disney collectors of all types and levels.
I highly recommend it to anyone with half an interest in this field. If you don't collect Disneyana before you buy this you certainly will once you get a copy in your hands. It covers so many areas and is very informative. Also it has fantastic pictures of many unknown treasures.

  2. Ted Hake has dealt in Disney collectibles for 40 years, and he has turned his experience into a true collector's companion. This book is a must for both the novice and advanced collector of (early) Disneyana. The selection of items is excellent, discussing great pieces not only from the US but from the entire world.

  3. This has good information for current sales, it does not include all Disney collectibles however.

  4. Ted Hake, the King of Collectibles, has issued a book on Disneyana. I am very excited that this book is on the market. For novice collectors there are lengthy features regarding the history of different aspects of Disney collecting that will bring you up to speed. The articles also work for advanced collectors for detail reminders and a quick, all-in-one reference for those pesky details that will clear that bet you made. This book is hefty, and I know if Ted could have included even more he would have. Each inclusion features a very handy full color photo, detailed description, and a price break-down for varying conditions and parts (i.e. box value AND item value). The book is divided into sections for each character(s) or particular items (posters, four-color comics, Walt Disney, etc.)and items are listed in chronological order making the tome extremely easy to reference. Each section begins with a history of the characters or items, making dating items particularly easy. Prices listed are realistic, fair market value; however you have to make up your own mind what you would sell/pay for any item. I am a Disneyland collector so I especially appreciate the sections on Disney Park items. Perhaps in the future the Disney Parks sections can grow...or perhaps a book only on Disneyland collectibles...! But that is only my own desire, not a complaint. This is the first reference book I reach for these days. Every good Disneyana fan or collector should own it!

1 comments about Contemporary Stone Sculpture: Aesthetics Methods Appreciation.

  1. A fine reference volume, this book is perhaps less valuable in terms of instruction than Liebson's book, but Meilach picks up where Liebson leaves off. Liebson devotes his book entirely to technique -- to the craft of sculpting; only the first third of this book does the same, but with the help of over 350 photos, Meilach instead concentrates on the art of carving. Not so much art theory, but rather considerations of form, volume, and meaning, and how to impart those to your sculpture. Liebson will teach you how to carve; Meilach will help you figure out what to carve. Liebson's book is still #1, but Contemporary Stone Sculpture is its perfect complement.

5 comments about Collectible Aluminum/an Identification and Value Guide Including: Hammered, Wrought, Forged, and Cast.

  1. Virtually everything in the book is innacurate. There are literally hundreds of factual errors. A good example would be the 23 line essay on Wendell August Forge that has 14 errors of fact in those 23 lines. Shame on Grist!! Shame on Collector Books for having published it ! ! Anyone who has paid more than $1 for it has been significantly cheated.

    William Freeman

  2. I received this book as a gift. I have some hammered aluminum and thought this book would be useful to help me learn more. I was wrong, indeed! This book has decent pictures and that is all. There is absolutely no timeline for markings to help someone establish when a piece was made. There is no regard to what is 'rare'. There is also no information given on what the numbering system for certain makers means. How many types of things did Rodney Kent make, for example. I have found this book of little help with my collection.

  3. With the advantage of hindsight and experience, I have to withdraw my earlier favorable comments. I agree with the negative comments of other reviewers. The one that stated in effect that you are in trouble if you look beyond the pictures is probably right on target. Mr. Grist should significantly upgrade his research, quality of illustrations of marks, provide time frames for marks, get to know "Rodney Kent" better and update his prices. A section on manufacturing methods to distinguish between hand hammered and other would be useful.

  4. I have been collecting hammered aluminum for many years and can honestly say that this is the worst book that I have ever seen on the subject. It is riddled with inaccuracies of fact and misrepresentations. I could write a book on the inaccuracies found in this book. If you do anything more than look at the pictures, you will likely not learn much. His research techniques were useless at best. This book is full of fairy tales!

  5. This book has come under much criticism from expert, professional, and seasoned collectors. Much of this criticism is justified from their point of view. However, for the novice or one just getting started collecting hammered aluminum it is a valuable tool. I am novice collector who can't afford to maintain a large research library on hammered aluminum. I find this book a valuable aid when shopping for aluminum. The Introduction and maker's marks are an asset. I only wish that some dates or periods of time could have been listed under the marks. Keep in mind that the values listed in the book are relative. At this point the values are highly understated. If you can find quality pieces at or beldow the values stated in this book, you found a bargain!

3 comments about Heath Ceramics: The Complexity of Simplicity.

  1. Definitely not a "coffee table" dust collector but a book that I have spent many pleasant hours enjoying. It gives the reader an appreciation of how the multi-faceted potter Edith Heath brought classic design into the home through her ceramics. This book is a wonderful addition to my library and it makes gift giving easy.

  2. The book for anyone with a passion for Edith Heath's designs as well as people interested in ceramics from the 40s until today. What the book lacks is a catalog of Heath's ceramic designs. But this shortcoming is not a big deal. What this wonderfully designed and produced book boasts is the vision of a singular woman who will forever be a part of the design landscape. The book is an absolute steal at the amazon.com price. Dense editorials, fantastic photography. A beautiful tribute.

  3. Finally, a respectable book on Edith Heath! Klausner's work really stands out in the small but discerning crowd of Heathophiles. The more I tuck into this extraordinary book the more I become fascinated by the miraculous and timeless techniques of the House of Heath. I recommend this book to anyone even remotely interested in ceramics.
