4 comments about 60 Great Sci-Fi Movie Posters (Illustrated History of Movies Through Posters, Volume 20).
- War of the worlds, This Island Earth and Star Wars! Every big name movie or B-movie poster you could think of. And a few I've never heard of. Only one point away because some of the posters look like they were unfolded after being left in somebody's basement for a dozen years. Surly they could have found better copies or used computers to take out the flaws. But still, its cheap and holds a lot of poster images, so I really should not complain. Can't help but love the half naked women. Many of which were not in any of the films. Just there to hook the people.
- With the exception of the more recent movie posters, I thought it was a fairly good collection of 54 classic science fiction posters.
- All of Bruce Henderon's books are worth a dozen times what he sells them for; flawless, stunning reproductions of great movie posters. Buy them ALL! this is my favorite, though.
- This is a TERRIFIC book, at a terrific price, filled with - you guessed it - terrific, clean, sharp, colorful images of some of the best science fiction and fantasy movie posters ever created. In that respect, it meets and exceeds a five-star rating.
Alas... I'm still disappointed by it. Here's why. I already have a lot of the Bruce Hershenson books, as well as a number of other movie poster books. This book is Volume 20 in Hershenson's series, yet to those who have earlier volumes, it's a bit misleading to call it that. For earlier volumes, Hershenson took care to try not to duplicate images that had already appeared in the volumes that preceded it. There were occasional duplications, but even those were sometimes welcome to get the images in various sizes (for earlier volumes, the reproduction size would vary from 1 poster on a page to as many as 9 posters on a page). One of the great advantages of this volume is that ALL the posters are presented at full page size, 1 per page. There's even a wide margin at the spine side of the page so you don't have to force the book open wider to see the inside edge of the poster art. (Two thumbs up for that design feature!) My complaint is that the selection in this book - 60 posters - is almost entirely duplicated from earlier Hershenson volumes, AND are generally the same posters for the same movies that all the other poster books have printed ad nauseum over the years.
In that respect, the "60 Great" movie poster books are really "Best Of" collections, which is why I think they should not have been numbered as part of the continuing series. Like a "Greatest Hits" collection from a band, these are spectacular collections, just don't be expecting anything other than the most familiar titles.
Bottom line - it's unquestionably well worth having, but if you're an old hand at movie poster books, don't expect anything out of the ordinary.

5 comments about The Book of Old Silver: English * American * Foreign.
- The photography in this book is minimal, black and white and grainy. Extensive and interesting background information, though (126 pages worth). VERY extensive coverage of maker's marks for all countries. Some marks are so small as to need a magnifying glass, however. (Hence the four stars)
- The book was in or above the condition described and is the product I was looking for. I was glad that it was readily available through Amazon.
- I bought this one, along withe another (Sterling Flatware Identification & Value Guide) for my mom and she uses it a lot. I think she uses the other one more but she always has both on hand. It has a lot of good info on how to id a piece, great pictures of hallmarks etc.
- This book is a must have if you collect antique English silver. If you only want one book on the subject this is it. If you collect American or European silver, this book would not be my first choice. You can't get more info on antique English silver including hallmarks, history, and the different pieces of flatware and holloware that were made with any other Silver book I have ever read.
- Talk, talk, talk. So much information about city hallmarks and nothing about purity marks. No way to really identfy general items that a novice collector would have. Is it real or not? Talks about fakes and again nothing about standards of silver and what they are. High brow attitude toward the subject with little or no information on Continental European silver in detail. Too little to late!

5 comments about Beautiful Wedding Decorations & Gifts on a Small Budget.
- Lots of tips on everything from the engagement party thru wedding party gifts on to the getaway vehicle. There are plenty of nice line drawings which should help the do-it-yourselfer. This book was a bit to frilly(lots of ribbons and bows)for my taste, but if thats your kind of thing, it would be great.
- After a lot of research on weddings, I bought this book about a year before my 1996 wedding, and although I never used it for that wedding I kept it because of the ideas that can be used for occasions other than weddings. Biscotti was "hot" at that time, and she has an easy recipe for it to bag and give as gifts. Gift baskets are included as well as something called a "crazy quilt," which looks easy and I hope to attempt one day (mostly to use up all my fabric scraps.)
While some of the other reviewers called it "girly," and I agree, but there are more ideas than most people would use. Mrs. Warner's other books also contain the same types of ideas. The overblown bridal "industry" will have you believe that if you want a "proper" wedding, spending $10K to $20K is reasonable. It's not. It is NOT necessary to mortgage your future on a one-day event. That kind of money is a degree! Enjoy your day, of course, but don't blow it on a party. Reasonably priced weddings with all the trimmings are possible. I did it, and it was because I did research before I spent a dime.
- I don't know where the writer of this book comes from, but it must be from money. There is nothing in this book for a normal bride trying to save money. I would NOT recommend this book for anyone on a budget. It was a total waste of time and money.
- I have to agree with the previous review; I found the book to be more girly than upscale. Fortunately, I bought the book used, so it wasn't much of an investment. But, yes, if you're looking for "Cinderella", you might find tons of romantic ideas that can keep you within a budget. This book is useful as a starting point, to get your creative juices going. If you're looking for truly unique, memorable, and modern, this book is not for you.
- We created the tulle gazebo that is in the book. Other than adding a few extra touches, we did extacly how it was described. We received many compliments on it. I also did some of the favors, and incorporated some of the idea themes into our ceremony and reception. This book may not be for the "Modern Bride", but it is worth looking at if you are wanting to have a "Cinderella Wedding" without the expense.

2 comments about Red Wing Stoneware.
- This book has excellent colored photos of various Red Wing stoneware. I found the book to be quite informative in regards to the history of Red Wing Stoneware, and the various companies that made such stoneware. I found the price ranges to be quite realistic. This book has everything from crocks, jugs, churns, water coolers, snuff jars, and many more. The glossary of terms was helpful too. As a beginner in Red Wing collections, I'm glad I got this book. This book does not have every Red Wing stoneware piece, but they do have many.
- Have you ever wanted an easy to use, beautifully photgraphed, and consistantly benificial Red Wing Stoneware reference book? Well look no further. This guide book will help you in sorting out the numerous pieces of Red Wing Stoneware, their markings, and the most current prices.
This very informative reference is a primer for the beginning collector and a great research tool for the more advanced collector.

2 comments about Candlewick: The Crystal Line (Schiffer Book for Collectors).
- This book steps up to the next level from those worthy guides published in earlier decades by Mary M. Wetzel-Tomalka. Full color illustrations, beautifully executed, and a complete round up of the production line. If you are newly interested or a serious veteran collector, you'll find this volume an indispensable reference source. The valuation prices do seem a little high and perhaps ought to be regarded best for insurance purposes. Normal auction and most shop prices for commonly found items will be less than those presented here. However, as happened with Mary M. Wetzel-Tomalka's books, the piece costs may soon approach those shown in this book, so maybe the authors are only thinking a little ahead of the curve. Highly recommended for the reference shelf.
- Candlewick, one of the most popular lines of glass produces by the Imperial Glass Corporation of Bellaire, Ohio, was introduced in 1936 and manufactured until the company's closing in 1984. Today this pattern, made in crystal and many lovely colors, attracts avid collectors of fine glassware. In this beautifully photographed and carefully researched book, nearly every item in the crystal line is shown and discussed. The authors have used Imperial's factory records, catalogs, and price lists to assemble extensive background information on these exclusively crystal Candlewick pieces. Organized in easy-to-use categories, the book covers place settings, serving pieces, sets, and miscellaneous items such as ashtrays, candle holders, compotes, and vases. To further help with identification, undocumented pieces, reproductions, and similarities are shown as well. Measurements are all of Candlewick's stem and tumbler lines are included, as well as many new facts not published before. Values are included both in the captions and in an overall price guide organized by mold number. This book is an essential reference for Candlewick collectors and all who enjoy beautiful glass.

5 comments about Collecting Classic Bolt Action Military Rifles.
- Most firearms books for the collector fall into general types: Slick picture books available at your local brick & mortar bookstore which are long on pictures and short on data (and much of what they contain is wrong), bare-bones price guides, and weighty specialty tomes that cover one make or model in excruciating detail.
What the field is thin on are general overview volumes on one particular field of collecting that have enough information to be useful on a broad variety of arms in that particular field. This book is one of those rare volumes.
While there are many more detailed works available on, say, Mausers or Mosins or Enfields, this book offers enough detail on the broad field of bolt action military rifles to be of assistance to both beginners and to more experienced collectors venturing outside their preferred field.
- This book is a pretty good history for bolt action military rifles, however a serious collector will find little value in this book.
- This is an excellent text and hits the target dead on (right in the old 'X'). It captures the fun and spirit of "milsurp" collecting and covers all of the major areas in sufficient detail for a typical collector.
It's true that if you're a specialist collector in a particular area you will want additional reference materials--but this book does not set out to be the encyclopedia of firearms minutia. Instead, it's an enjoyable look into the collecting world. Having said that, it still provides a goodly supply of solid details that match my other (more encylopedia-like) reference works.
It focuses on the types and classes of rifles that collectors are likely to come across in today's environment, and stays right on topic throughout. It also has a few pages on rifles that you won't likely come across... but would sure like to!
Filled throughout with excellent photographs, and each major rifle's "stats" are called out in a highlighted box.
The physical production of the book is beyond reproach--you really are getting fine quality in a book that will last. The writing is easily accessible, though at times a bit too chatty for my tastes. Aside from a few minor typographical errors (reference to an antique Winchester Model 1985, for example) the read is enjoyable and just plain fun. With a good editor the 2nd edition will be a true classic.
- I bought this book after collecting rifles for a few years, it is in fact the ONLY contemporary book to cover the history and development of all the major manufacturers and models in such detail and with great pictures too. The chapters of the book are well planned and as I find myself exploring a new area of collecting, I read the relevant chapter again. After collecting German bolt actions for some time I got interested in Lee-Enfields and the discussion and pictures of these rifles was very helpful in getting a good coverage of the rifles and models. It can also be helpful to the more experienced collectors, some time ago I came across a rifle in a store marked as a Greek Mauser. I know what a Greek Mauser looks like and this was not one, it is marked 'Breda 1927' on the side of the receiver. After perusing Mr. Scarlata's book I came across a whole section including pictures of the rifle, it is a Mannlicher Schoenauer 1903/14 rifle. Scarlata explains how in 1926 the Greeks signed an agreement with Societa Anonima Ernesto Breda of Brescia Italy for 100,000 of these rifles which were delivered in 1929. He also mentions that there is some speculation that the rifles were in fact produced by Steyr and assembled and finished in Italy so as to bypass restrictions imposed on the Austrians by the Allies after WWI. If you are at all interested in the history and development of bolt action rifles you need this book.
- I couldn't disagree more with the earlier review. This book is quality work. Mr. Scarlata does a good job describing the primary weapons of the major and minor powers of the late 19th to the middle 20th century. He then goes on to describe the major variants of each type. As Scarlata desribes the firearms, he points out with word and photo the unique features that he and, hence, you will find interesting. I almost didn't buy the book because of the earlier review. I'm glad I did. If you want to know everything about every variation of the US Krag get Brophy's book. If you want good meaty info on most of the world's bolt rifles here is the place to start. By the time you need more information on your rifle of interest, just flip to the comprehensive bibliography in the back of the book.

3 comments about A Pictorial History of Costume From Ancient Times to the Nineteenth Century: With Over 1900 Illustrated Costumes, Including 1000 in Full Color.
- Okay, so I bought this book thinking it would be a useful reference book. It's not. Yes, it has a bunch of illustrations, but it gives no reference information to go with the plates--which, by the way, are simply awful line drawings, some of which are badly colored in to the detriment of the pictures.
Do not buy this book if you want to learn what things are called, the time periods in which they were used, or any specific, detailed information about variations in the general styles for a specific period in time.
On the other hand, if you just want some reference pictures for designign your kid's Halloween costume, then you have plenty to go by.
- Although the pictures do not go into great detail, this book has a wealth of information for the costume designer. For kid's halloween costumes, school-play costumes, and general information on style and period, this book can be invaluable. Included are full colour and black and white sketches, as well as reproductions of statues and paintings. It is an excellent book for the casual costume designer, though a serious historical re-enactor would need something that provides greater detail.
- Gives a basic and brief coverage of both male and female costume from different periods and cultures. mixture of both colour and black and white sketches. no great detail but good enough to present a general idea.
