5 comments about Tudor Costume and Fashion.

  1. I love the Tudor era, its clothing most of all. Herbert Norris's book comes in handy in helping me visualize the characters whenever I read one of the Tudor-themed historical novels that I have. The only drawback is how the information is arranged, but that's a minor complaint. Norris had so much data that I don't think he could have organized it any other way.

  2. It is great book to learn more about Tudor era clothing. You are able to learn the details of the costumes that is wore in Tudor era. Learn more about Tudor fashion. Good to make some copy clothing to attend Renaissance Festival. Help me to design some tudor costumes for some party or for halloween or for Renaissance Festival.

  3. One of the bibles of Tudor Era costuming! Lots of detail and research went into this book. The only problem is the organization could have been a little clearer. But I can overlook that due to all the wonderful infomation included.

  4. I bought this book as a christmas present but I am sure she will love it since she asked for it.

  5. great book. detailed descriptions of clothes, accessories and court day-life related objects such as chariots. And it has a small biography of the tudor kings as well.

  1. One of the best books on the subject. Weak area is china from areas other than Britain.

  2. The author has done her homework with this book of flow blue items. It's easy to follow and very well put together. Great reference book - great reading!!

4 comments about The New Successful Coin Hunting.

  1. While much of what this Mr. Garrett writes can be helpful to someone new to the hobby of metal detecting (such as learning how to pinpoint targets, and how to dig for coins), this book must be read with these things in mind:
    1) It is heavily biased since it is written by Charles Garrett of Garrett metal detectors. He neglects to mention or picture other metal detecor brands.
    2) Mr. Garrett's discussion on detector technology is largely obsolete.
    3) Many of the claims presented in the book are highly sensationalized and idealistic. Sure, the stories about people finding gold coins and hoards of buried coins are entertaining to read, but even my local coin dealer who sells coin detectors says he has never heard of anyone finding such items.
    4) This book does not give a well-rounded view of the metal detecting hobby. Mr. Garrett only emphasizes the good and the sensational, making it sound like anyone can make a lot of money metal detecting coins. This is just not the case unless you make metal detecting your part-time job. To find the good coins, you will have to spend a great deal of time researching (which Mr. Garrett mentions) and even then, you will have to dig a lot of trash. You can spend three hours in a field and all you find is a button and a few current coins. Garret's book gives you the impression that gold coins are buried right in your backyard. This is simply not true. Avoid this book, as it is nothing more than an elaborate Garrett sales brochure.

  3. This is a great book which got me started in metal detecting. It is extremely helpful, and will motivate treasure hunters by giving ideas on new places to hunt, it is also written very well and is easy to understand. The only drawback is that like most Garrett texts it promotes Charles Garrett's personal brand of metal detector

  4. Beginner or experienced, you will love this book! The New Successful Coin Hunting is a modern version of Garrett's previous book "Successful Coin Hunting". The New version gives you ideas where to hunt, how to hunt, dig, clean, and even how to choose the right metal detector! It even has information on the newer computerized detectors. This is the book you want to take out on the 'field' with you when you hunt. Happy hunting!

5 comments about The Official Precious Moments Collector's Guide to Figurines.

  1. The 2007 Bomm Precious Moments guide is truly precious since it incorporates retail and secondary values into the same book. The cross-indexing by figurine title and model number is also wonderful. The photos are great quality, too. The guide is a must-have for all collectors!

  2. Took a while to receive due to release issues, but once received, Book is great!

  3. I think this book is a great way to keep track of my Precious Moments and give me a current value of each one. However, because values change from year to year, it could be a lot of work transferring them to a new book each year. I think every couple of years would be fine to keep track of what you have unless you purchase numerous figurines every year.

  4. This guide is an essential reference for any serious collector or anyone buying or selling Precious Moments figurines. The lack of serious competition will make sure this sells. However, there is little improvement in this 3rd edition over the 2006 second edition. The addition of the newer figurines and an update in pricing, which seems to average about 16% increase, are the main differences. There is also a size difference. The second edition was a handy 8.5" x 5.5" but the third ed is 11' x 8.5", which I believe is too large for a soft cover book. There is no new information about each piece that is not in the earlier version. It would have been nice to include the size of each item. There is an annoying change in the index that consolidates several previous entires into entries by series. For example, instead of separately listing the sugar town skating pond there is one listing for the series 'sugar town' with 18 page numbers.

Overall, I was disappointed in this guide and would recommend that anyone not needing information on the last 2 years figurines stays with the 2nd edition and awaits the 4th.

  5. Just received this book in today's mail, and frankly, other than the pictures of the pieces, it is, in my opinion, not worth the paper it is printed on. There is NO secondary market except internet auctions for Precious Moments any more. This guide lists "Free Puppies," for example, as a value of $2,100 - they sell regularly on auction for $300 - $450, depending on whether or not they have a box. Last week, one with an original brown cardboard box (extremely unusual), went for just under $600 in mint condition - a beautiful piece. The rest of the "Original 21" are priced through the roof - some of them 10 times and higher prices than what reality is. There is a disclaimer in the book claiming that the prices vary from spot to spot, and they got this information from dealers and collectors around the country. I wish they would give credit to these so-called knowledgable people, and it would be nice to know who paid $2100 for "Puppies" and how many years ago that happened.

For the pictures, the guide is fine, but beyond that, DO NOT rely on it for accurate price information - even many of the suggested retail prices in the book are incorrect.

I give this one a thumbs-down. There is no secondary market to amount to anything in collectibles any more, in my opinion, and this book's prices just encourage disillusionment among collectors so they keep buying (or investing?) in pieces, hoping to make good money when they sell. It ain't gonna happen - there is a ton more merchandise out there than anyone ever guessed back 30 years ago at the beginning of this.

Buy what you like, like what you buy, and don't expect to put your kid through college when it's time to sell - you might not get back enough money to even pay the bookstore bill!

For what it's worth - my opinion!

5 comments about Instrument Flying.

  1. I've been using this book to read up on different facets of IFR flying just prior to each of my IFR classes. It has worked extremely well to prepare me for what the excercises I am about to do under the hood. A little short on information in some areas but overall a great book. Well worth the money.

  2. This book is good if you have your instrument rating, but it is not set up for trying to learn the techniques. Most of the book assumes that you know what it is talking about, but it does offer an entire chapter of a glossery.
Good reading, but not for someone wanting a headstart on their intrument ticket.

  3. When I read this book I was already through with my instrument training, it does contain many great tips and is a very fun quick read. However, I wish I would have read it earlier in my training, the description of the book says it's great for both beginners and experienced but I found it to be written for too large an audience and was left hanging on certain aspects of the book. Overall I did enjoy the book and can see it being of tremendous value to someone who has become rusty, for those that are already sharp this is not a necessary read.

  4. Taylor delivers strongly in this timeless book about IFR flight. Whether you are a strict stick and rudder pilot or a more procedural and technical pilot the author clearly spells out the basic premises of instument flight, from the cockpit to ATC. It should be required reading for all students seeking their instrument rating; it was for me. Please take note: this is NOT a complete guide to IFR flight. Rather it is helpful in understanding and reviewing the basics. This should be one of many books read when getting one's instrument rating or CFII.

  5. This book is filled with many incredible tips for IFR flying. And you don't have to be IFR rated to understand the material. There are many jokes throughout the book but they are very relevant to the topic at hand and help emphasize the point. And they are not overbearing so most of the material is real "meat". The author cites many aviation accidents to show how not to fly IFR. It is really impossible to find anything wrong about this book.

5 comments about Navajo Rugs: The Essential Guide.

  1. Excellent Book on Navajo Rugs. Great for the collector, giving some history and what to look for, as well as for the Navajo Rug Weaver. Good, basic information to help you make sure you're buying a genuine rug woven in the Navajo way. I enjoy reading about the history as I do weave Navajo Rugs and find everything I can read of interest. This is not a how to weave a Navajo Rug Book. There are many other weaving books out there on How to Weave Navajo Rugs. The Navajo Rug Collector/Historian would enjoy adding this book to their library.

  2. Pretty much useless - unless you literally have never laid your eyes on a Navajo rug before. I needed values and how to tell the difference between Zapotec and Navajo, I got neither.

  3. This book is a direct to the point, easy to understand guide on Navajo rugs. Works like a practical handbook, and a must own for connoisseurs and enthusiasts of Navajo rugs.

  4. I have recently started to purchase different types of Native American rugs and blankets. This guide has been a tremendous help in identifing Navajo rugs.

  5. This is a must have book if you are interested in collecting and purchasing Navajo rugs as well as learning about the history of these items. Easy to read and full of essential facts. I plan to order 2 more copies for friends who are very interested in the Navajo weavings.

  1. This book makes for excellent reference material for those thinking of investing in a great rifle or simply enthusiastic about the art of rifles today.Exhaustive gun list covering most commercial rifles of today and yesterday without wasting too many pages on worthless ballistic charts.Highly recommended reference for hunters, competitive shooters, collectors or simply gun enthusiasts.
