5 comments about Power Prayer: A Program to Unlock Your Spiritual Strength.

  1. have to disagree with the last reviewer. This is a terrific book, full of personal perspectives. I have met the authors and heard them teach. I know for a fact that they are not just some New Age authors, but are serious students of metaphysics and esotericism since they were young (for over 30 years each). They have seriously studied and practiced prayer for many years under renowned Yoga Master, George King. Apart from that their studies have led them to profound realizations of their own. They are definitely not just parroting other people. Their findings are the result many years of serious practice. I am not just talking about an odd prayer here or there, but they really pray with their hearts and souls intensely for many hours on end. The last reviewer says their work is a copy of others. Well, there is nothing new under the sun. The way they have brought together different aspects of prayer and metaphysics is not new, but it contains profound insights, masses of personal experience and is an extremely helpful guide for anyone interested in prayer. It is definitely not some fluffy New Age guide as he implies. It is a serious study presented in a very user-friendly, easy-to-ready way.

  2. This book is just a collection of other people's ideas as is common in the New Age publishing industry. But this, in itself, is not so bad. This book brings together a lot of different ideas for prayer and visualization. That is not a bad thing, but if you have been reading these sorts of books for a long time then you will certainly want to pass on this one.

  3. "Meditation on the Divine Self" exercise is my favorite technique from this juicy, lively book. But it's crammed with useful understandings and wise advice.

One of the most significant things about this marvelous book is how the co-authors give anecdotes about experiences with prayer-results they achieved, miracles initiated by their prayer students-yet there's never the feeling of bragging. As a lifelong reader, plus someone who worked professionally as a book reviewer for six years, I can't tell you how rare this is. Of course, if you're discerning about the tone of books, you don't need me to because you know exactly what I'm talking about.

Because I've been a fan of Chrissie's writing for a number of years, and know her personally a bit through emails, I chanced to learn that the proceeds of this remarkable book are donated to the spiritual organization for which she has served as a minister for decades, the Aetherius Society.

Trust Chrissie and Gary NOT to trumpet this fact on the jacket or make it a big deal in the promotion of the book. That speaks for their uncommon integrity, too. Many an author or publisher has bragged about giving part a book's profits to a worthy cause, using the charity (however miniscule the percentage) as a means to gain media attention and turn buyers' sales resistance into mush. Here, quietly, they're giving it all away. May this remarkable book make a million for the Aetherius Society! And may seven million dollars more come back to Chrissie and Gary!

One of my favorite parts of the Bible, in the Book of Matthew, concerns the sanctity of prayer when done directly to God, without bragging. Those who boast about their holiness and good deeds are said get their rewards on earth, not in heaven. From the behavior of many so-called Christians, you wouldn't know they'd read this central bit of scripture, would you?

But Chrissie and Gary walk their talk. Whatever your religious path, this jewel of a book can add to your crowning glory--which, contrary to conventional wisdom-is NOT your hair.

Before and after trying their prayer techniques, try reading the festival of light shining out of your body, including the crown chakra at the top of your head.

I recommend doing this because it's a real way to gauge the authentic power of this book. Using a technique for spiritual discernment-"Finding a New Church Home," in my how-to, "Aura Reading Through All Your Senses," I can tell you that results in my own aura prove unquestionably that POWER PRAYER really is powerful.

I'm so grateful for this book. If you're considering buying it, don't hesitate. May you, too, find results from this inspired, generous and wonderfully practical book.

  4. I recently heard about this book from listening to the authors being interviewed on the Marianne Williamson radio talk show. What they were saying was EXTREMELY INTERESTING and VERY UNIQUE, so I read this book. It is VERY INFORMATIVE.

I have not come across another book anywhere that covers prayer in such simple and practical terms. I thought I knew a lot about this topic until I came across the techniques described in this book. The information presented in this book is EXTREMELY UNIQUE and is a result of years of study and research by both of the authors, who back their claims by citing scientific studies. I am just amazed how EFFECTIVE my prayers have become since using the techniques described in this book. This is a very encouraging book.

  5. I have read many books on prayer and I have found this one to be among the very that I have read. The authors really explain what prayer is and how it works without attaching it to any one religion. I like the fact it is not biased, but explains prayer as a "song of the soul."

Also, we tend to regard prayer as something we use to ask for things for ourselves. In Power Prayer, there are techniques to help you enhance your prayers, to make them more powerful, and there are also techniques by which you can use prayer to send healing to people who are sick - and to use for victims of disasters, and so on. I have tried the methods in the book, and also some of the absolutely beautiful prayers at the end of the book - and wow, I really felt a difference.

I also had an amazing healing experience when using the healing prayer, which I will relay to the authors. I think the best thing about the book is that it is, well, INSPIRING! It is one of those books you read that makes you think "Wow, I really can do it!" With this book, you think "Wow, I really am powerful, I really can heal people, I really can change the world" type thing.

It also contains lots of scientific experiments and proof of prayer, which is nice. It is a great resource book and one I can happily send to friends of mind who are Christian, as well as friends who are Jewish and also Buddhist (as well as a couple of friends who don't even believe in religion or prayer; it's that convincing). So, yes, I agree with the other reviewer, it is a groundbreaking book. I think if you are interested in the power of prayer and healing, you definitely have to have this one on your shelf.

5 comments about Antique Trader Book Collector's Price Guide (Antique Trader Book Collectors Price Guide).

  1. The expanded new edition of a classic book collector's market guide provides full color and plenty of detail, updating prices for over 5,000 books and using charts to help identify first editions --which can be a tricky process, as publisher's marks vary from publisher to publisher. A new chapter on children's books has been added, while Top Ten lists of rarities and an alpha listing by author makes it quick and easy to use this as a take-along tote for flea market ventures.

  2. I bought, then returned this book. It may be a fine book for some but the word "Antique" in the title is deceptive. I am interested in antique books. Considering the fact that books have been published for centuries, a shotgun listing of books of relatively recent vintage may serve some well but was useless to me. Sorry, Mr. Russell. Better lose the "Antique Trader" title if you have another printing.

  3. Lighten up a little, guys. The book is THREE years old, fer chrissakes! NO book, even Ahreans, is going to cover everything AND continually be up-to-date on the fluctuations of the market (and market values), but each reference book you purchase adds a little something to your knowledge based, and this one does as well. The chapter on pseud.s adds yet another dimension to the book seller's (and/or collector's) knowledge.

  4. This book is very helpful to me as I buy and sell used books.

  5. So many times I have purchased books that promise the information I will need to be knowledgable about a subject. And so many times it is an empty promise.

Antique Trader Book Collector's Price Guide makes no empty promises. It's filled with accessible information that informs the reader on this complex subject. I've not found one easier to use.

If you are interested in collecting or selling books, this guide belongs in your library.

5 comments about Authentic Victorian Dressmaking Techniques.

  1. As others have stated this book is more Edwardian period fashions and not Victorian, although one must remember that many of the same sewing techniques where used since not many people could afford to own a sewing machine. It shows how to sew even stitching by HAND which would be period correct for victorian or Edwardian sewing. Having studied and made civil war period clothing I found this book invaluable to recreate hemms, hand sewn plackards on skirts with hook and eye closures and how to finish the bottom of a boned bodice with NO lining in it. I would have been lost trying to figure all this out on my own. This book has wonderful illistrations of hand sewing and photographs from the early 1900's.

  2. I've had it a year and the binding is unraveling. The information in this book is very useful. Some improvements to the text, illustrations and binding in the book and it would've made it a 5 star book.

  3. I make reproductions costumes for our NYS Historic Preservation Costume Department. I have been trying without success to find an authentic 1885 Norfolk Suit and knickerbockers to replicate for a boy aged 8 years old. This wonderful sewing manual had a detailed description of both. Although it was written in 1905, the sewing techniques have been the same for many, many years. This manual is my most treasured for authentic techniques of the Victorian/Edwardian era.

  4. Victoria was queen from 1837-1901.
A reprinted dressmaking book from 1905 should not have it's title changed to include the word "Victorian". It's very misleading.
This book is for the S front pidgeon breasted style of Edwardian clothing only.
It does not even mention bustles, hoopskirts, fitted bodices, or any of the other key elements that defined Victorian costume.

This book does not include any patterns, but it does tell you how to alter and sew garments from existing patterns, and might be useful if you have some vintage patterns that you'd like to adjust and use.

I am highly disappointed and I plan to return this book.

  5. This book should say that it only covers techniques from the late Victorian era through the turn of the century. Earlier techniques are not covered, otherwise it is a good book. If you are looking for dressmaking techniques prior to near the turn of the century, look elsewhere...

2 comments about Scott 2007 Standard Postage Stamp Catalogue: Countries of the World So-z (Scott Standard Postage Stamp Catalogue Vol 6 So-Z).

  1. I really like all of the color photographs of the stamps and how the series are grouped together. It makes it easy to find the stamps and country you are looking for.

  2. Any one who has ever thought of collecting stamps in the US, is familiar with the Scott stamp catalogs, the backbone of the collectors world. Yeah, they're a bit pricy, but then look at the work that has gone and continues to go into them! NEW for 2007.....COLOR!!!!! OMG!!!!! Most of the illustrations are now in COLOR!!!!!

I am in the process of inventorying my Grandfather's massive stamp horde to try and sell it off. At ChicagoPex this year, I was drooling over the new catalogs, mumbling something about "color......". My sister wasn't overly impressed with the concept (she's since changed her mind!) and balked at spending that much money for a new set of catalogs. We've been working out of a 1999 set.

Needless to say, I won! Hallelujah! Especially for the "not so informed" or anyone with not so good eyesight, the color makes a HUGE difference! It is SO much easier to find a stamp that you're looking for! I can not thank Scott enough for their huge effort in rescanning every single stamp in existence (that they could get their hands on).

Bottom line......if you're thinking about it, but doing the "well, my catalogs aren't that old yet" or "boy, that's a lot of money to shell out", my advise is BUY THEM!

5 comments about The Standard Knife Collector's Guide: Identification & Values (Standard Knife Collector's Guide).

  1. I found a cigar box full of old pocket knives in my mother in laws attic. I wanted to learn more about them and what they might be worth. This book answered that question easily while also sparking some interest in acquiring other similar knives of value. I would recommend it or "Official Price guide to collector knives" by Price to anyone wanting to know more about pocket knives they might have.

What I didn't like about this book was the poor quality pictures and sketches for many of the knives, they were of copier type quality. But they were good enough for me to learn what I wanted to know.

  2. Positives: Comprehensive overview of the various manufacturers. Good valuation system that gives direction on which brands are more desirable. Decent discussion of knife care. Good glossy color insert.

Cons: Does not discuss the history of various patterns(Stockman,Trapper, etc.), but this seems beyond the scope of the book (find an old copy of Bernard Levine's Guide to Knives...either the 3rd or 4th edition). A general overview of patterns and their intended use would be nice.

This book will get you headed in the right direction of knife collecting. This combined with the Bernard Levine book mentioned above is all you need unless you specialize in a brand. There are Case, Cattaraugus, etc... specific books. As to some other comments, I guess I knew this didn't cover fixed blade knives, but I guess it should be "The Standard Pocket Knife Collector's Guide."

  3. The fifth updated edition of The Standard Knife Collector's Guide remains a 'must' pick for any who would regularly consult a 'bible' of knife values and history. Over seven hundred pages pack in details on major knife companies, issues, collectible ratings, current stampings and more, with small black and white photos and illustrations enhancing the book's reference value for collectors. It's a specialty item to be sure - but knife collecting is one of the most popular collector's items and so this book is sure to see ongoing interest for any collector library patron.

  4. Excellent in every way. The authors have incorporated years of common sense in their advice. The rating scale is a stroke of genius. Thank you.

  5. Other than proposing to be a knife price guide, this book has no information about knives, other than a very cursory overview, for someone who knows absolutely nothing about knives. The book fails miserably in its attempt to be an informative price guide. The concockted mathematical formula for determining a knife's value is devoid of reality. In the case of certain brands, such as "Case" and "Cattaraugus", the values are so far below real world values that the book is almost entertaining as a jest. Someone who wants to learn about knives and gain a feel for their values would best be served by getting a copy of Levine's 4th Edition. I wish I had read my own review before I purchased this book.

2 comments about The Winterthur Guide to Caring for Your Collection (Winterthur Decorative Arts Series).

  1. This is a small book that gives the readers a basic understanding of how to care for any collection. Broken down into collection type (textiles, photographs, porcelain, toys, glass, etc.), the use of pictures and easy to understand principles has served as a quick reference to let me know what kind of preservation care would be needed for a certain item. Of course, the book is not designed to be the ultimate reference on detailed preservation care, but unless you're an expert and can access the detailed information you need from your own shelves, this serves as something that gives correct information without overwhelming those of us who might care for a personal collection or who have come across an item we are unfamiliar with. Very useful and one of my favorites!!

  2. This is a great book and I have used some of the info provided to care for some textiles that I have.

5 comments about How to Make Money in Coins Right Now, 2nd Edition.

  1. This book was laid out in a way that you could follow and understand. Very informative.

  2. This was a good book except there were no real ideas except to break out your coins from the already sealed and graded plastic cartridges and resend them back to have them graded again hoping they will upgrade their already graded grade. Hopefully, in breaking the protective case, you don't scratch them getting them out. To me, that was expensive and taking a chance on their judgement. There were no real hints that I could use other than what I was already doing.

  3. While well-written, this book comprises of one theme throughout: cracking older PCGS graded coins and re-submitting them in the hope of a higher rating and a higher value. The book is very well detailed in this respect, but many of the older holders have long ago been cracked and re-submitted. Very little in other advice as far as making a profit.

  4. When you buy these kinds of books, you tend to expect some secret techniques of making money. Many books even manage to create the impression of telling you something previously undisclosed, until you try it and realise that it does not work.

This book is written by the professional in this field. Making money in coins is a business, and not such an exciting one, after all. There are a few ways of making a profit honestly (or almost honestly) in numismatics. And there is no guarantee of being succesful. Very sobering message, and this book gets it across well.

I learned a lot from this book and would recommend it to anyone interested in this business.

  5. I bought this book with the idea of picking up some investment coins, salting them away for a few years, and cashing out. While that may indeed work, it's not the essential theme of this book. After reading and thinking through some of the strategies, I became fascinated with the grading arbitrage game that is covered in great detail. Despite Travers' warnings about doing this online (and ebay specifically) I was able to parlay $600 into $1200 in about two months using ebay coin auctions. There is some risk involved and you absolutely must do your homework, but pretty much everything you need is discussed in this book. You can make your own price guide by using the resources on ebay; you will also need the self-discipline to not over-bid!

4 comments about Oil Lamps II: Glass Kerosene Lamps (Oil Lamps).

  1. Wonderful photographs of rare and not so rare old lamps along with a great education on their production. A real "must" for those collecting full sized kerosene lamps!

  2. Just starting in the business, it's been a great source for information and pricing.. Thanks!!!

  3. This is Ms. Thuro's companion book to Oil Lamps I. The focus here is on rare cased glass, colored glass and composite kerosene lamps and in combination with Oil Lmaps I, is a valued addition to a complete study of the kerosene lamp. 1998 Price Guide

  4. Only one week after purchasing this book I spotted an Oil Lamp in an antique shop in Bournemouth, England and I bought it at a bargain price knowing from reading this book that it was a 1904 German "Bismark" Lamp!

3 comments about Standard Catalog of United States Paper Money.

  1. The best description I can give of this work is as a "reference work," and it is not "literary." It is profusely illustrated, but not all notes are depicted.

As a collector of currency for over 50 years, several errors in picture captions popped out at me immediately. I have also compared the pricing with the current market, and as any such volume the data is already getting stale. U.S. Currency is red hot at this time, and the market is extremely volatile. It is difficult for a catalog of this type to be useful for other than a short time frame, if the valuations are a reason for it's purchase.

Other than these small quibbles, a recommended work. Four stars.

  2. THIS BOOK IS OH SO INFORMATIVE ON PRICING ! ALSO HAS GREAT PICTURES ! THE ONLY REASON I DIDN'T GIVE IT 5 STARS, WAS THAT IT DID NOT GIVE PRICES FOR DIFFERENT PRINTING "BLOCKS" WITHIN ANY GIVEN YEAR. ALSO DID NOT CONTAIN INFO ON HOW MANY NOTES WERE PRINTED ON ANY GIVEN YEAR OR FROM ANY GIVEN FEDERAL BRANCH.

  3. I'm new (again) to the hobby after ~5 years and I picked this book up over the weekend. I cannot evaluate or review the pricing information contained in this book but it seems to be on par with what I am seeing in the market. As I mentioned in the title, I'm really liking all of the color pictures and detailed information about the different series of notes - color pictures probably outnumber the black and white pictures 20 to 1. I'm very glad I purchased this one!
