5 comments about Lamps of the '50s & '60s (Schiffer Book for Collectors).
- I AGREE WITH TUCSON, AZ IN THAT THIS IS A NEAT LITTLE REFERENCE BOOK IF YOU LIKE COLLECTING GREAT FUNKY, VINTAGE LAMPS. IT WAS THE FIRST LAMP BOOK I COULD FIND WHEN I STARTED COLLECTING AND THOUGH THE BOOK VALUE PRICES ARE VERY LOW FOR TODAY'S CURRENT MARKET, I WAS ABLE TO GET A "ROUGH" ESTIMATE ON WHAT MINE WERE WORTH. A LITTLE HISTORY BEHIND EACH LAMP WOULD BE NICE, AND THIS BOOK COULD USE A PRICE UPDATING AND SOME CLEARER PICTURES, BUT OVERALL, IF YOU CAN FIND A USED COPY CHEAP, IT IS WORTH HAVING.
- This was released in 1997, before Ebay and the lamp craze of the 50's and 60's hit its resurgance. It was the very first lamp book I purchased, and the only one with 'funky' lamps that I could find at the time. I found it to be very enjoyable, and a great reference to help me start my vintage lamp - collecting hobby. Though the pictures are a little blurry, and the prices very low, keep in mind that the market is constantly going up, and some are VERY collectible now, bringing in top dollars. If you can find a nice used copy of this book, buy it!
- what a jip. the cover shot has these cool looking lamps and all but once you open the rest of the book it turns out to be a blurry mess. does this publishing company have a computer? Hello is anybody in there? some of the worst lamps i have ever seen are represented in this book.mrs lindenberger should at least do some research on the prices these lamps regularly sell for. perhaps by checking on eBAY. come to think of it between Ms. Lindenberger and schiffer publishing they have put out more trash price guides than singer made sewing machines.Dont Judge a book by it's cover is definately appropriate in this case.
- although some of the pictures are not the best, I personaly enjoyed looking at all the quirky lamps. (there are some really outa-this-world looking lamps in this book.) If you want to see some really over the top lamps, check out this book.
- This is typical of the work (or lack thereof) of Jan Lindenberger. Lousy pics, little or no product or maker information and completely off base pricing "guide". Don't waste your money on ANY of this "authors" titles if you want accurate information. Shame on you, Ms. Lindenberger and Schiffer Publishing for cranking out this low caliber garbage.

1 comments about Cloth & Comfort: Pieces of Women's Lives from Their Quilts and Diaries.
- This is a lovely small book which gives colorful visual images
of our American quilting history. The ladies of the 1800's left us their stories in diaries and letters. They also left us their beautiful quilts. The hardships of life on the American frontier was helped by the quilting projects that the women used to fill their time. In 1831, Lydia Marie Child wrote, "The true economy of housekeeping is simply the art of gathering up all the fragments, so that nothing be lost. I mean the fragments of time, as well as materials. Nothing should be thrown away so long as it is possible to make any use of it, however trifling that use may be..." This is certainly an idea that is far removed from today's thinking where we throw away many useable items. The quotations that are used throughout the book are poignant and very interesting. These words from our history are set against the background of pieces of quilts and wonderful photographs of ladies, and the various accoutrements of sewing. The longing to keep connected to her young married daughter is reflected in the following letter from a mother. In 1850, Hannah Shaw wrote to her daughter, "I have been looking for something to send to you, but I could not find anthing that I could send in a letter bitt a piece of my new dress..." This is an easy and charming way to reflect on our American history.

2 comments about Cuba Classics: A Celebration of Vintage American Automobiles.
- Yes, we've all seen great photos of classic cars in Cuba--but this book will make you swoon. Your knees will buckle, and you will become feverish with desire to get yourself to Cuba as soon as possible. Magnificent.
- Chris Baker is the preeminent travel writer covering Cuba today. His guidebooks for National Geographic Traveler and Moon Publishing are biblical Baedekers for anyone traveling to the island. "Mi Moto Fidel," his book-length journey around the island on a BMW motorcycle, reads like a Hemingwayan novel -- and has garnered prestigious writing awards. Now, with "Cuba Classics," Baker has taken his already impressive act to a new level, displaying his skill as a photographer, which is nothing short of artistry. His stunning photographs of vintage American autos -- so plentiful in Cuba -- are not only wonderful depictions of cars not seen in the U.S. for decades, but are the subjects of photos that demonstrate a photographer's instinctively artistic command of format, color, tone, and lighting. Settings for the autos often speak to the greater issue of the Cuban landscape, both urban and rural. It's a must book for car buffs, for anyone interested in photographic artistry, for anyone enamoured of beautiful writing. As a long-time fan of Baker's journalism, I have found myself asking what else could he possibly do to present another aspect of this island country he knows and loves? "Cuba Classics" is the latest answer to that question. Kudos.
