1 comments about Magnificent Molas: The Art of the Kuna Indians.

  1. My wife is a fiber artist and I am the webmaster of her site. We own nearly 4.000 books and we have gladly added Magnificent Molas by Michel Perrin to our collection. It is difficult to imagine that anyone could do better than Perrin. His Magnificent Molas is a remarkable book in every sense: illustrations, text, layout and printing are all of highest level and come together in a well documented and passionate praise of the magnificent textile art of the kuna indians and their culture. It is even well written, so it makes pleasure to read. This book is a must for those who are interested primitive and textile arts.

5 comments about Statehood Quarter Collection Number 3: 2006 To 2008 (Official Whitman Coin Folder).

  1. This version folder allows the coins to fit in much more easily. No longer that thumb-numbing fight I put up with the last few years.

  2. Previous reviewers who said the holes are too small are right. It's almost impossible to insert quarters with just your hands. I found that it's not so hard when you use some kind of tool to help you, though.

First, place the folder on a solid flat surface. Then position the quarter correctly, and push it in as much as you can by hand. Now find something to help you get it in the rest of the way without damaging it. I used the rubber-coated handle of a pair of pliers. Place the tool on the edge of the coin that's still sticking up, and apply pressure to force it into the hole.

After I got the quarters into my folder, they looked fine. There was no noticable damage. Though the hole size is annoying, this is still a good folder, and I would recommend it, especially if you already have Statehood Quarters #1.

  3. I used the first Whitman binder for the first three years of the statehood quarters and it held the quarters pretty well. But something strange happened when they made the binders for years 4 through 7 (Vol. 2) and 8 through 10 (Vol. 3). They must have got the idea that the U.S. Mint shrunk the size of the quarter, because it is almost impossible to fit the quarters in the slots. All have to be raised up on an end to fit snugly, but it looks awful. That didn't work for me, so I have found another binder that does a better job. It's hard to believe the leading coin book maker missed the boat on this one.

  4. I am very unhappy with the new Statehood Quarter #2 book. I purchased 2 and wasted my money. The quarters do not fit in the slots that were made for them. The slots are way too small. I had to manually enlarge the slot in order to use the books.

  5. A great way to start your coin collection . I highly recommend this to everyone.

1 comments about Ornamental Indian Artifacts: Identification And Value Guide.

  1. As with all of Lar Hothem's books they are very informative with many color pictures for reference. This is a good reference book to have, but I would get the others to be well rounded in references. Not much thought by me on his prices. The market changes but the prices listed are good, but remember this book is over a year old so prices may have changed on some items. As with anything though really it is only worth as much as you are willing to buy or sell it for.

5 comments about Collectibles Price Guide 2006 (Collectibles Price Guide).

  1. Judith Miller price guides are simply the best! They have great color pictures and easy to read price guides. There are none better.

  2. not a whole lot of item's. More picture's than anything. A lot of the item's in the book I beleive are way to over priced. Not a good book to take to flea market's or auction's.

  3. This book is so easy to use-- great price guide to take along on your antique hunt. A whole list of consultants in various areas of expertise help with this book. It covers everything from Holday Memorabilia to marbles to posters to sports stuff to sewing stuff to Teddy Bears and Toys. Also great section on the weifd and wonderful. Also great list of clubs, societies and organizatins. Space memorabilia, rock and pop, radios, pez dispensers, glass, costume jewelry, ceramics -- almost everything around your grandma's house or you'll see at a garage sale including early computers, comics, and watches. Great pictures -- of almost everything with nice hints as to how to take a closer look at a Coca Cola clock and collector notes. Good range of prices and also explains when it was made and how tall etc so you don't get confused. That old pair of straberry shaped earings are not junk-- they could be worth $70-$100 if they are by Weiss. Even an iPod poster could be worth up to $120.00 That 1940's PINK perfume bottle could be worth a $1000 or more...buy this book and you could get RICH!

  4. I thought Kovels was good but this one is better. nicer pictures and easy to use.

  5. Here is a book you will be unable to put down. The pictures are very clear, the information and descriptions are well done, and especially valuable are the reference sources. This book should appeal to many ordinary collectors.

5 comments about The Official Price Guide to Dolls.

  1. In answer to the last review, the book has 900 photos. Nearly all dolls have pricing for both eBay and also non-eBay sources, and the methodology for pricing is clearly set forward in the first chapter. Each secton on a particular doll also has a market analysis for that doll.

  2. I found this book not up to par with some other doll collecting guides I have. It doesn't have enough pictures. I don't know how the author came up with some of the values. -It seems she just searched Ebay to find what the dolls were worth, I could have done that.

  3. This book was helpful in finding the value of some dolls, the pricing was pretty acurate compared to other books

  4. I think that this book is very helpful, lots of information for a very resonable price

  5. Once you start collecting one type of doll, your eyes start noticing all the other dolls as well and you begin to realize that dolls have an important connection to fashion, art, history, and technology. The Official Price Guide to Dolls by Denise Van Patten gives testimony to that thought shared by many avid doll collectors.

I like her easy-to-read format of the doll listings and photos. Her contemporary presentation of up-to-date facts prefaced in each category give straightforward details regarding the dolls' features and histories. Investors and buyers alike will find the pricing information helpful.

Denise does a super and thorough chapter on educating the doll collector on how to use the Internet and Ebay for buying and selling dolls. This informaion is priceless for many who are anxious to learn about this important technological impact on doll collecting and how to get started. She generously shares her best tips and pitfalls one should be aware of.

The book itself is of managable size and fits in your purse to take to a doll shop, show or museum. It is well worth the reasonable price for a great reference tool plus it makes a sweet beside book of dreams for the insatiable doll collector.

2 comments about French Fashion Plates of the Romantic Era in Full Color: 120 Plates from the "Petit Courrier des Dames," 1830-34.

  1. This book is really useful to me for the color patterns in the fabric as well as the colors for period fashion. Also, hairstyles, hats, and even shoes are detailed enough to reference for my own illustrations.

The original journal, "Petit Courrier des Dames", was for the wealthy and fashionable woman. It was so popular in Paris that the English translated it for the fashionable Englishwomen who looked to France for the latest styles. The plates feature fashions for both wealthy women and men with captions that generally state the type of material used or some brief descriptive detail
(ie: "Rice-straw hat, jaconet dress, French cashmere shawl. [No. 835; September 25, 1831.]")

Pictures show costumes front and back views, standing and seated (mostly the women). There is 1 plate of young boys' costumes, 5 of Gentlemen, and the rest are of Ladies with 1 small collection of bonnets.

Each page offers two separate costumes.

There is a two page Introduction that explains the original French source material for Dover's edition, brief summary of characteristics of Men's, Children's and Women's fashion in the Romantic Era, and a compact glossary of materials and garments now with a loose English equivilent material.

The one tiny issue I have is that the edition I received sported a different cover than the pink one above. The interior content is the same.

  2. This book is a great resource for the re-enactor or costumer. It can be considered primary documentation, as it is directly reprinted from the original. There's a very handy glossary in the front, in case you are not already familiar with mousselain-de-soie. I wish I could make every dress in the book--it's so hard to choose only one of these delightful gowns!
