5 comments about Horse Health Care: A Step-By-Step Photographic Guide to Mastering Over 100 Horsekeeping Skills (Horsekeeping Skills Library).
- This is a good basic book for beginners, but if you have any experience with horses at all it will be WAY to basic for you. it doesn't even mention colic! It should at least list the warning signs. The leg wrapping sections are useful, but really, does anyone really step by step instructions about how to put a blanket on a horse?
- This is a great book for the new owner who hasn't been brought up aroung horses. It has great pictures and goes into a lot of detail about nutrition, vaccinations, illness/injury, age characteristics ect.
- This is truly for a first-horse owner or someone who is leasing a horse and who wants to learn the basics of horse health care. I found several of the chapters useful for treatments that I needed to give for the first time, but there are other sections that aren't as practical and there is a lot of space devoted to black and white photographs, which are not too useful either as it's difficult to look for differences in texture or coloration that the text elaborates on. Having said this, for a true beginner it is an adequate foundation and would be appropriate for a younger rider/reader as well.
- In my opinion, this book is not worth buying, unless you are truly a beginner. And even then, you will quickly outgrow this book. It contains practices that you can quickly pick up at the stable where your lessons are. To learn them from others at your stable will more likely help you, because it will be in more detail and you will watch someone do it.
- Without Cherry Hill and her books with all the pictures I am sure I would have been panicking at every little scratch on my horses. She explains things so a non-horse person can understand without having to run to dictionaries or other horse reference books to look up her explaination. I buy all her books as I find them and enjoy her friendly way of writing. Thank you Cherry Hill for taking the time to make the explaination interesting and informative.

3 comments about Italian Greyhound (Kennel Club Dog Breed Series).
- First, why did I read this book? Do I have an Italian Greyhound (aka IG or Iggys)? No. I am considering the breed in the future. I'm also writing a novel where one of the characters has an Iggy and does dog shows on the side.
This book is a very useful book on the subject of Italian Greyhounds. Objectively, I cannot find a problem with this book. Subjectively (or in my opinion which may not be yours), it did not sell me on the breed as other breed books I've read on other breeds (and the problem here may not be that the author, Dino Mazzanti, failed, but that the breed may not be right for me). Also, I found it to be the one most resembling a text book; the others were somewhat more fun to read.
Still, if you own or consider owning an Iggy, this is a very good book for you to have in your library. It has helped me know the breed a little better, which was my reason for reading it.
Jeff Reynolds
- In Australia there are few Italian Greyhounds so information was scant when I was quite decided on having one of these glorious dogs for myself. Of two books on the subject I found, this one was the source of answers to nearly all of my questions. The only few unanswered ones were those that no-one could have imagined, being solely related to the particular very individual surprises my new little chap occasionally threw at me - but we managed to work them out between us.
- It is a great source of information! Very well presented and to the point. We couldn't ask for more.

5 comments about Bedtime Stories For Dogs.
- This book came to me by chance and I had no intention of reading all of it. However, reading one fairy tale led to another and then another. Each story gave me a chuckle and several a hearty laugh. The old fairy tales take on an amazingly fresh feeling with Jasheway's creativity. Her writing makes it clear that she has spent many hours with her canine companions. She writes the bedtime stories with the insight of one who loves her dogs.
I found the book very entertaining and easy to read. At less than 100 pages, you may be tempted to read it at one sitting but if you do you will lose out on days of innocent "feel-good" entertainment.
This would be a great gift for dog lovers of all ages. It is the perfect gift for anyone who needs cheering up, or for yourself - whether you have a dog or not.
- "Bedtime Stories for Dogs" is one of the funniest and most CREATIVE books that I have EVER read. It is WONDERFUL for anyone who has a favorite dog and it makes a SUPERB gift. I have several at my house on hand as gifts and have already given many copies to my family and friends.
Leigh Anne Jasheway is a creative GENIUS. I was amazed at her humor and talent as she adapted fairy tales and nursery rhymes to a more "canine perspective." These stories are not "fluff." They show a creative talent that I sincerely hope Jasheway will pursue in additional works. The book is approximately 100 pages and on quality paper. I sent one copy to my sister who is an executive in Colorado (with two degrees and a Masters). She was laughing so hard that she proceeded to call our mother long-distance and READ her one of the stories over the phone! Some of the delightful stories include: "The Three Little Pugs," "Snow White and the Seven Chihuahuas," "Goldilocks and the Three Cats," and more. These are tales that will delight not only your pets, but are sure to amuse children and friends. You will LOVE this book!
- So cute. This book has the cutest stories. I even bought one for the kennel I worked at. Good bedtime stories for dogs and people.
- If you have a dog or just love dogs, this re-telling of classic fairy tales using dogs as main characters (dachsunds, chihuahuas, etc) is hilarious and so much fun to read. Saw this one at a friend's house, read it to my kids and knew we HAD to have a permanent copy.
- The author used just enough of the word "dog" to keep my dogs' attentions. How much more of these stories they understood is up for debate. Reading these canine versions of fairy tales and nursery rhymes was quality time spent with my dog children

5 comments about Dog-Friendly New England: A Traveler's Companion, Second Edition (Dog Friendly).
- I purchased this volume, unread, as a gift. Therefore, I cannot offer first-hand testimony (hence, my four stars). The recipient, however, vouches for its accuracy and usefulness.
- My wife and I wanted to travel with our Newfoundland dog. No small feat! I read the reviews of this book and decided to try it for myself. I have just returned from 8 days in Kennebunk, Kittery, Bar Harbr ME and Newport RI. The suggested places to stay were teriffic. Clean, roomy enough and very very hospitable. The places to eat and go were also uniformly great! While these were not 5 star resorts, the owners get 5 stars for opening their places to a gateful family! GET THIS BOOK!
- Dog-Friendly New England is a well-organized travel guide for those of us who can't think of travelling without our dog. The book is organized by region,
and each region is rated for its "dog-friendliness."
This book is fun to read when you're just trying to plan a New England trip.
It offers just the right amount of information, with capsule reviews of lodging establishments, restaurants, and attractions. You can probably plan your whole trip to New England based on the recommendations in this book.
- We took our two dogs to Canada and used this to navigate the northeast. Highly highly recommended.
- This is a great book, we have dogs and love to travel. This book gives us a wonderful list of places to stay and other information.
Thank you,
Jane

5 comments about Arabians.
- Expertly edited by Hossein Amirsadeghi with enhanced with full color photographs from Rik van Lent Sr. and Rik van Lent Jr. and an informative text by Peter Upton, Arabians is an extensive pictorial documentation and understanding of a distinctive equine of historic lineage -- the Arabian Horse. Providing readers with an detailing of the breeds origin, use, recorded development, and the interesting historical significance of the prestigious and fascinating animal. Arabians is very highly recommended as illustrated compendium of detailed writings about a truly noble and enduringly popular animal.
- This book has entrancing photos, and skips through a large number of countries and studs. If you are looking for in depth information on Arabians in any particulary part of the world this book is not for you. It looks at selected studs only. If you want lovely pictures you wont be unhappy.
- This book is a necessity for the library of any Arabian lover. The text and photographs take you around the world and through the passages of time. Fabulous photographs and wonderful attention to detail. What a worthwhile purchase!
- This is a great title to add to your ever growing arabian horse book collection. It's excellent reading, as it contains everything that you need to know about this magnificant breed and is fully illustrated with beautiful graphics.
- i love the great pictures of these beautiful horses, and the text actually tells alot, where most books give alot of info you dont need.

5 comments about Why Cats Do That: A Collection of Curious Kitty Quirks.
- There's about five books with the title "Why Cats Do That" or close variations thereon, as well as a yearly calendar, to say nothing of the many books on the same theme with other titles. A testimony to the number of things cats do that make one wonder, "why?"
This book is whimsical in both writing style and its answers, and delightful on that level. The answers are sometimes simply more questions, or musing on the question and coming up with contradictory answers. There are at times references to statistics like how many hours out of the day cats sleep, or to scientific things like the "Flehman response," or to unnamed "cat experts." If studies and footnotes and a bibliography are what you're looking for, then the reader will be frustrated. If you're happy to go from wondering to wonderment, then it's more likely you'll find the book charming.
The black and white pen & ink illustrations included in the book, like the one on the cover, are cute and nicely done. The book itself is nicely bound as well, all traits that make it good light reading for a coffee table, or as a gift.
- I love this book. It may be kinda basic but very interesting and informative. Now I can tell their mood and thoughts.
- This book was very reader friendly and would be great for someone that doesnt know alot about cats. Its short and basic. There is a chapter on why cats hiss and the authur advised that cats hissed because they were trying to sounds like a snake since most animals fear snakes. Thats alittle hard to belive... thats like saying dogs growl because theyre trying to sounds like a bear or something. Dont buy that to much but the rest of the book was good.
- The title describes how we used the book. We ordered several for friends and relatives that we knew had and loved cats. They all enjoyed the book.
- This great little book will make a wonderful gift for any cat lover! It provides answers to those little nagging questions that cat lovers have - like why do cats purr and where does that purr come from anyway. It is a small book, well written, and a treasure for the price.

5 comments about New Secrets of Successful Show Dog Handling.
- If you are brand new to the world of showing you can quickly become discouraged by the "closed society" that the dog showing world often is. I started showing this year with a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppy armed with only the advice of an experienced exhibitor, a handful of showmanship classes and this book. Of the three I would say that this book was the most comprehensive and useful resource. You should still seek out an experienced mentor--someone familiar with prepping and showing your breed...but barring any other input this book WILL get you started. It can't help you with breed specifics, but I found it TREMENDOUSLY informative on the little details for giving your best "presentation" in the ring. Everything from how to hold your leash to how to dress is covered. Yes, that would be redundant for an experienced exhibitor....however even those with YEARS of experience in ANYTHING can always learn something new. Even if you only pick up one tiny tip that helps in the ring it's a worthwhile read!! If you think you already know it all then you should review the credentials of the author....
I will be looking to other books for more advanced knowledge as we progress. But if you are a beginner looking for a fantastic and comprehensive one-stop-get-you-started kind of book, this is it!!
- It's about time someone with the experience of Peter Green write a book about showing dogs that doesn't avoid the topic of politics within the sport! Great tips are exposed, though he's a TERRIER man so keep that in mind if you show hounds, working, sporting, etc. It's inspiring and helpful to read.
- WOW!!! what a book up to date info and so exact .
excellent techniches and stape by stape on how to.
you feel like you are in the show ring and when you put the book down you want to put the show lead on your dog to practice...very helpfull and inspirering.
- Starting my second show dog's career, after blundering my way through with my first one, Peter Green and Mario Migliorini gave me excellent tips and strategies to make the handler pay more attention to his/her job. I love the section on stacking - wonderful photos to show the sublties that beginners don't see. An excellent book for someone with the basic knowledge already down who wants to take their showing to the next level.
- This book would be helpful for anyone beginning showing dogs. They really needn't know anything. If you already know what a show is, how to enter and have been in the ring before, you're probably not going to get much out of this. I have a few books on showing that far outwiegh this one. It's basic, simple and for complete novices only...It is written well, and is easy to understand. If this is to be your first book on dog showing, then it will provide you with enough info to get you started. I preferred, The Winning Edge: Show Ring Secrets (Howell Reference Books) and Tricks of the Trade: From Best Intentions to Best in Show, Revised Edition

2 comments about Positive Reinforcement: Training Dogs in the Real World (Positive Reinforcement).
- Brenda Aloff is a pioneer in her field. She knows the in's and out's of dog behavior better than anyone I have ever read.
This book explains not only what you should do, but why you should do it and helps dispell some of the "old school" trains of thought regarding dogs, behavior and training.
TRULY A MUST HAVE!
- Fixed action patterns, negative punishers, unpredictable avoidance responses, bridges, and reward marks... OH MY!!!
Do these terms make you dizzy? Do you want to train your dog using the most gentle and effective way, but phrases like successive approximation make you lose interest?
Brenda Aloff has finally done it... In this wonderfully written and funny book she explains all of the terms and methods for training your dog the fun and easy way. One-by-one she shows you the proven techniques for shaping your dog's behavior into that of a well-behaved canine companion. This book also has a lot to offer the more-advanced dog trainer, and even obedience/agility instructors!
As the owner/handler of Fox Terriers, a notoriously difficult breed, Aloff makes it clear that all dogs are trainable if you know how to communicate with them clearly. She is also careful to emphasize that when training your dog it's "the journey that counts" and that the desired behavior is of no consequence if you have ruined your relationship with your dog in the process!
I especially enjoyed this book because although she stresses using a reward mark, or a "clicker," she also discusses training WITHOUT one! I have a noise-sensitive dog who is actually scared to death of clickers, so this was of great use to me. I am able to apply her methods, even though I'm not using a clicker.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in dog training... if your goals are professional, a hobby, or just for fun. This is a great book!
