4 comments about The New Basic Training of the Young Horse: From the Education of the Young Foal to the First Competition.

  1. Worth buying. Has usable, common sense information. Well put together in sequence of stages for training the young horse.

  2. I was disappointed with Klimke's basic training book. While it was interesting to read about their comprehensive training program for young dressage horses that includes eventing, the material was not specific enough to learn how to do any thing. The book covered way to much material in a general way and addressed too many audiences. So it did not really appeal to me. The books is very well designed with great pictures and format, but the text wonders. If you want to learn new techniques don't buy it. If you like to read general horse books with great pictures, it is worth buying.

  3. I am a huge fan of both Ingrid and her father, however I was a bit disappointed in their book. They seem to talk about general things "you want this and not this", but don't tell you how to do "this" and not teach "this". If I knew how to do it I supposed I'd already know it was correct. I had hoped it was more specific for we riders who have not atttained FEI status. I would like to have seen more step by step on some of the big issues like ground control and how to have masterful hands. Some movements are explained, but not all.
It was interesting to read what they think is correct and how they manage and treat their horses. I'm not sure that this should be in every dressage trainer's library. Some of the other books by other master riders are much more helpful.

  4. I've been riding all my life, but wanted to understand some basic philosophies of getting a young jumper started. I found this book to be very helpful in laying that foundation. If you've never owned/ridden before, then you may want to seek some personalized attention from an experience horseperson. But if you're a good rider already, you'll enjoy this book.

5 comments about Proper Care of Guinea Pigs (Proper Care of...Series).

  1. I have read 3 books on guinea pigs and this is by far the best & most "down to earth". The author has & loves guinea pigs. I have found that none of the books are particularly helpful in assessing gender.

  2. This is a colorful book with lots of pictures and content but I wish it were less like a story and more factual.

  3. I bought this book when I decided to adopt two sows, based on the reviews this book got. Later after I got the pigs I did some more research and discovered the Cavy Cages website and the Guinea Lynx medical online resource for guinea pigs which included a highly moderated forum so one can read the most up to date information on cavy care.

I give Gurney credit because he touts the benefits of large cage size (he himself has a free-range situation with 37 pigs) and also because of the many high quality pictures of cavies. I have read around 20 books on guinea pig care, and his is by far the most accurate in terms of care, but sadly still lacking.

The organization of this book leaves much to be desired. Although the pictures are delightful, sometimes they are so big and numerous that the text is oddly spaced and hard to read through. Also, the chapter names are vague ("beautiful beasties, to have and to hold".) There are no specific sections on food or adoption, which I believe to be two of the more important aspects of cavy care. Hay, good quality pellets and fresh fruits and veggies need to be part of a cavy's diet. And pet stores often get their pigs from a backyard breeder and/or give inaccurate advice to consumers.

All in all, this is a mediocore book. I highly recommend that if you are looking into getting a guinea pig, do the online research first! Especially check out the two websites I mentioned. This book is nice to buy afterwards, but not for the information, just for the pictures.

  4. A must read for any current or potential guinea pig owner! We (the TX Rustlers Guinea Pig Rescue) recommend this book to all our new guinea pig adopters.
This book has many color photographs which helps in the depiction of ailments your piggies may suffer from, he also recommends treatments and advices on what products you can use to treat the more common / non life threatening conditions.

  5. This is one of the best guinea pig books out there. There is a lot of information and many pictures to go with it. Being the owner of six guinea pigs, I do like to read a lot about them. I was trying to find a book that contained more than just words and cute pictures. (Although this book is packed with great pictures!) I had a skin condition on a newly acquired pig, and I really needed a picture or two to help me figure out what I was dealing with. This was the ONLY book out of the ten I own that showed pictures of two of the most common skin conditions - ringworm and mites. Although I do have a knowledgeable veterinarian, I do like to have something on hand that helps me to recognize common conditions so that I know when it's something I can treat or when it needs a trip to the vet. (This time it did - mites!) I wish I had bought this book early on in my guinea pig ownership. I recommend it to all guinea pig owners.

5 comments about Crate Training Your Dog (Storey Country Wisdom Bulletin, a-267).

  1. The information in this book gives me very good guidelines for training Jamie, which I appreciated since I did not know how to go about it with my first dog, Beau. It is knowing how to start & to carry through with the training that I needed to know. It is slow but it is working.

  2. Shipping etc was super fast - super easy purchase.. I didn't read close enough - thought I was getting a book - got a pamphlet type of thing! AND...If you read the title right up top... it says..."wisdom bulletin" DUH me! so I don't really have any complaints - still a good source of information - I just paid more for this lil pamphlet than I did for some hardcover books!! LOL Thanks!

  3. great book, very useful info and arrived in a timely manner!

  4. If you want to learn about crate training your puppy, buy a book about raising your specific breed of dog or get a copy of How to Raise a Puppy You Can Live With. This 'book' (I would call it a pamphlet!) does not have any information that any decent book on raising puppies does not.

  5. This book didn't teach me anything I didn't already know. I would not recommend this book to anyone.

3 comments about Animal Healing and Vibrational Medicine.

  1. As a Pet First Aid Instructor and Reiki Master the value of Vibrational
Medicine is just now starting to take hold. This book is well written and the instructions are easy to follow and understand. A great book to
get in touch with all your critters and contacts for resources as well.
    Great Job!

  2. I found I was disappointed in the book. Put very few post-it note tabs on the books. Perhaps I expected more from it.

I found the book "Animal Healing with Australian Bush Flower Essences" much more useful for use of a vibrational medicine with a practical emotional and physical repertory in it.

  3. Animal Healing and Vibrational Medicine

    by Sage Holloway
Animal Healing and Vibrational Medicine by Sage Holloway,

If you have ever wondered what you can do for your sick pet, besides the usual trip to the vet, this book, a resource and reference guide for over 1,000 remedies, has some answers. It's obvious Sage Holloway has a deep respect and love for creatures. As she says, animals serve us provide for us, rescue us, feed us, and are our companions, yet cannot seek healing for themselves. We, their caretakers, must learn to do that. Since animals aren't as complicated with their emotional baggage as we are, that's a relatively easy thing to do. Vibrational medicine is a gentle way to revive their energies.
Holloway stresses the proper use of aromatic oils, the importance of using pure oils rather than the synthetic ones. A Vibrational Remedies Cross-Reference lists various types of remedies good for abuse, abandonment, cage stress, car sickness, depression and dozens of other conditions. A list of flower essence qualities, what they can do for your pet, is quite interesting, I could use a few of them myself!
As if this is not enough, there are charts on animal chakras, how to use dowsing, the five Chinese Elements, The Doctrine of Signatures. The Appendix has a resource list of companies that produce vibrational remedies, suggested music for your pets, and a list of essences carried by various companies. Sage has done a beautiful and thorough job of putting this book together. I strongly recommend Animal Healing and Vibrational Medicine if you have any kind of animal.

5 comments about Chinese Crested: A Comprehensive Guide to Owning and Caring for Your Dog (Kennel Club Dog Breed).

  1. Having a 5 month old Crested puppy, I purchased this book to find out more about the breed, and I did. Yes, you can surf the web and get info, but in this book, the information is all together in one spot. The book is well organized and gives general information on almost every topic. What I liked about this book over other books is the fact that the book gives the differences between the hairless and the powderpuff, which is what my puppy is. For every new Crested owner, this is a great reference book.

  2. I have come across millions of crested books, and this is by far my favorite. it is extremely informative, and very detailed. the pictures are great. it covers everything you would need to know, right down to alot of diseases, illness's, flea treatment, things not just associated with the breed. the history section was FABULOUS!

great pictures, great book, worth every penny.

  3. Very beautiful book with very beautiful photographs of the heaps of explanations for the care and grooming and in more it is not published in French , very invaluable.

  4. Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Excellent detail oriented breed book for Chinese Cresteds. Lots of wonderful background information on where the breed originated. This is a must have for anyone considering or even who owns a Chinese Crested. One of the much better written breed books.

  5. I purchased a hairless Chinese Crested. First, I read this book. The 8 week old pup I had flown to me developed coccidia (stress of weaning, leaving mom, travel, new home, new owners) after two days, which then led to hypoglycemia (stopped eating and blood sugar crashed) and died within one week. This book doesn't stress the fact that "toy" puppies can easily have this problem and what to do at the early signs to save its life. Unfortunately, my Vet didn't know what to do either. I learned from surfing the web, after the problem. That would be your best bet to learn about this breed, including possible problems that the book does not cover.

4 comments about Horse Gaits, Balance and Movement.

  1. This book is very complete with information and diagrams for all parts of the horse and how they move. Well written and a great resource to refer back to. Lots of detail on muscle groups and what they do. If you are interested in bio-mechanics, this works! I do lots of ground work with dressage horses and rehab for injured and arthritic horses. This resource is particularly helpful for me.

  2. I would recommend this book to anyone looking to fully understand the basic gaits, movement and conformation of the horse. There is information on the natural gaits of the horse and how a rider can enhance or hinder the horse's movement and balance. The format will assist both novices and advanced equestrians. It is written in easy-to-understand language. The information is also very accessible simply by browsing through the illustrations. This book would be a great addition to any horse enthusiast's library.

  3. Yes, Ms. Harris did the sketches. Her sketches really capture the movement of the horse and enables you to breakdown the gaits and jumping actions to see what is really happening. Utterly fascinating!

  4. An excellent presentation of the elements of balance in the horse's movement at various gaits. The illustrations (Did Ms Harris do them?) are grand and support the text very well. It is an excellent resource.
