5 comments about Paw & Order: Dramatic Investigations by An Animal Cop on the Beat.

  1. I remember watching Officer Tina Salaks on Animal Planet. She was on the show about the NYC ASPCA called "Animal Precinct." I liked Ms. Salaks the best because she seemed to care the most about the animals, more than the other agents.

Now she's co-penned a book, and it is a must-read. If you like animals, this book is for you. If you don't like animals, then read this book anyway and soon you'll find compassion in your heart.

  2. Years ago Tina Salaks and I worked for the same organization and I saw her dedication first-hand. This book is full of great stories from someone who has seen the best and worst of how animals are treated. A great gift for animal lovers of all ages.

  3. Incredible stories of animals in peril and those who dedicate themselves to the rescue and and care of them. A must read for those who love animals. It's an eye misting book, make sure to have a tissue handy.

  4. Great book for all animal lovers and especially those who watch the Animal Planet series about the various "animal cops" around the country. Teens and up will enjoy this book and hopefully gain some insight into what happens to animals when people don't give them proper care.

  5. What a joy to read, and to know there are dedicated people like Tina Salaks out there whose primary concern is the safety and welfare of animals.

In a cold and often heartless world, this book is a breath of fresh air. Do yourself a favor and buy it!

5 comments about Your Lab's Life: Your Complete Guide to Raising Your Pet from Puppy to Companion (Your Pet's Life).

  1. If you all ready own your lab... you will all ready know everything in this book. I would purchase this for someone thinking about buying a lab.

  2. This book was well written and had great content, but I do not feel as though it was an all-in-one book. A lot of the information is common sense, and after reading the book, I felt as though I still needed to read another. Good book as an introduction into the breed.

  3. Gives you a great insight into this wonderful breed and excellent hints at both home, obedience and field training!

  4. Here is an attractive entry by author Virginia Parker Guidry, abook that takes a loving look at America's singular and by far most popular wonder dog, the Labrador Retriever. As Berger points out so well, there are few other animals who draw such love from humans as a dog, and surely the Lab is the most loveable of the breeds. Here she presents the Labrador Retriever in all its wonder and does a yeoman service to the rest of us by enumerating all of the superb qualities the dog has to offer potential human enthusiasts. They are by reputation excellent working dogs, both as field dogs and as guide dogs for the disabled. They are also incredibly loyal, and the news services are often filled with wonderful and heartwarming stories of Labs crawling out on the ice to save their masters, often at considerable danger to themselves. Nonetheless, they stand by our sides.

Therefore, this book, "Your Lab's Life", is the ultimate tribute to the breed, and is chock-full with stories and photos that actively serve to substantiate what might otherwise seem as idle boasts and overethusiastic praise. In fact, for anyone who spends any time around Labs, like me, it is hard nto to use superlatives when describing them. More than one of the stories herein will bring a smile to your face, a tear to your eye, and the idea in your noggin perhaps it is time to consider getting one of these incredible creatures into you rlife, and that of your extended family. they boost the energy level in any room they enter, are incredible chick-magnets, and have been shown to reduce high blood pressure and dissipate depression through their mere presence. This is a wonderful book about what I believe to be the world's most nearly perfect living creature, the Labrador Retriever! Enjoy!

  5. My lab is recently acquired and is 4 years old and is a family pet. I found the book to be very informative in caring and for training. The book covers just about anything you would want to know and would work for puppies also.

3 comments about Natural Terrariums (Complete Herp Care).

  1. This book is good for basic information regarding the construction of terrariums and vivariums, but really wasn't what I was looking for. There were only a couple bits of useful information that I hadn't already found through searching the Internet. I have yet to find a good, detailed book dealing with the complexities of constructing a vivarium. All that I have read including this book cover only the simplest of concepts.

  2. This is a pretty good book for the price. It is a little too heavily oriented towards the reptiles only. I would have liked to see more vivarium information. Some information, like not to use magnolia leaves, is just plain wrong. Also, there is nothing on background construction.

  3. I'll be brief: I recently bought and read this book because I am building a new, elaborate terrarium. As a reference, this book is the best I've ever encountered. As a read-able book, it's also top notch. You would not think that moss could be interesting, but this book makes it so. Don't waste your money on books by Bartlett or Walls (anyone who reads herp books will know those guys know their stuff, but not like this!). If you're going to buy a terrarium book (discusses deserts, jungles, watery environs, etc. from beginner level to VERY advanced tricks and tactics), make this the one!!! You will NOT be disappointed.

4 comments about Dogspeak: How to Understand Your Dog and Help Him Understand You (Dog Care Companions).

  1. This book will really open your eyes to how our best friend thinks and try to live in mans world. If you own a dog or are thinking of getting one buy this book it is well worth the money just for the insites.

  2. Dogspeak is one of many dog behavior books I have purchased in the hope of solving a few behavior problems. This book was not the solution to my dog's problem, but it did provide good information for interpreting a dog's body language. I found the photos of different ear and tail positions particularly useful.

  3. I have to tell you all that this book is so incredible and helpful in raising my lab. I purchased it and read this within a matter of two nights. It helped me understand so much more about my puppy, Bailey. You will not be sorry... :) GOOD LUCK AND HAVE FUN READING THIS! A+++++ ALL THE WAY!

  4. I always knew she had lots to say but I had no idea how much. Now I can begin to try and understand her and have her understand me. I found the information fascinating and informative and have developed a whole new appreciation of the emotional complexity of our canine family members and how easily we can misunderstand them.

5 comments about Fun Nosework for Dogs.

  1. This book, by Roy Hunter, is a great resource by for all those interested in tracking--though it isn't necessarily a great book or primer for the beginner tracker, as it assumes skills the beginner (and her dog) might not have.

Other than that, Mr. Hunter's book offers interesting exercises for the advanced tracker and for those trackers seeking to expand their tracking dog's skills.

Overall, an interesting, informative book. I would have liked it better if Mr. Hunter had offered more explanations with some of the lessons, but I did like his behavioristic, canine psychology oriented perspective.

  2. This has fun ideas and training tips for your dog. You don't need to be training for search and rescue work to enjoy this book. You and your dog can just have fun.

  3. A friend of mine recommended this book to start my pup out on trailing and scent discrimination. Roy Hunter does a fantastic job explaining the process to the novice handler, as well as providing many ideas on how to keep it FUN and entertaining for the dog so that it is motivated to learn how to use it's nose.

He covers basic foundation work, enjoyable learning games that can be played with your dog, and includes a few fun stories from his time as a police officer in Britain.

I would (and do) strongly recommend this book for anyone wanting to start their dog on tracking, trailing or scent discrimination!

  4. This is a great book for beginners. I have a boxer/great dane mix who isn't "the brightest". He likes to use his nose and he is taking to these exercises very well. He has a lot of energy and finding something to really wear him out has been a challenge. This is much better than just plain exercise because he's mentally challenged as well as physically. He's still picking it up and I'm teaching him as I read. But this is a great idea for people trying to connect to their dog. My dog is a year and a few months and he's still picking it up really quickly. Great Book!!

  5. One review claims that the games in this book are for large groups. That reviewer is clearly confusing this book with Roy Hunter's other books, entitled "Fun and Games With Dogs," which do involve group dog games. However, "Fun Nosework for Dogs" does not involve multiple-dog games. This is book is about ways to get you and your dog to have fun while your dog uses its nose to sniff things out. There are no activities designed for multiple dogs.

Many of the activities are a lot of fun, like "Hide the Thimble" in which you teach your dog to find items that you have hidden, using its nose. Many dogs really enjoy looking for hidden items, and this can lead to hours of enjoyable hide-and-seek for you and your dog. However, many of these games depend on prior training of your dog. A lot of them require your dog to know how to retrieve efficiently and on command; many others require your dog to be able to bark on cue. So a lot of preliminary work has to be done before you are ready to tackle many of these games, and this book does not really teach you how to train a retrieve (though it has some suggestions about teaching the bark-on-cue). Some of these games can be taught without any complicated prior training; but unless your dog retrieves and barks on cue, at least half of this book will be beyond your reach.

That said, this is a great book that teaches "nosework" beyond formal tracking or police work: stuff like hide-and-seek, hunt the thimble, finding lost objects, and even a card trick where your dog finds the card last touched by a guest. In that sense, it is a very valuable addition to the literature on working with your dog's smell ability. But a lot of the stuff in here is a challenge, to say the least.

5 comments about Damn Good Dogs: The Real Story of Uga, the University of Georgia's Bulldog Mascots.

  1. Even if you are not interested in the Bulldogs of Georgia you probably will find "Damn Good Dogs" a delightful book; beautifully illustrated, the book relates the history behind the English bulldogs that have become the University of Georgia's mascot beginning in 1956. Sonny Seiler, who has owned the bulldogs, has put together (with Kent Hannon), a pleasing book filled with many photographs. A chapter is devoted to each of the dogs relating their lives and what occurred while they were mascot and the growing fame of the Ugas. I first saw this book on a visit to Savannah and was charmed by it from the moment I opened the cover.

This is a large format book that was thoughtfully designed and is a great tribute to the remarkable dogs named Uga.

  2. I am a lifelong University of Alabama fan but I have always known and admitted that Uga is - bar none - the coolest dog on the planet. And any dog who bites back at an Auburn player knows his football! My all-time favorite was Uga V and I was thrilled when he was rightfully named the greatest mascot ever by Sports Illustrated and made their cover. I was also excited to see this book.

This book is a great overview of the lives of the Ugas, their owners, and the Georgia football program. If you love dogs and college football, you'll love this book.

  3. This is a good book. I highly recommend it to Ga. fans. UGA is a staple of the entire Georgia program and his lovable story is one that all college football fans can enjoy. I recommend "A Tailgater's Guide To SEC Football" as well for any serious SEC Fans.

  4. Guaranteed to please all Georgia fans and English Bulldog lovers, this entertaining book contains the individual stories of six beloved Ugas who have served as mascots for the University of Georgia since 1956. Filled with delightful photos, illustrations and memorabilia spanning nearly five decades, it is loaded with fun facts, heartwarming stories--even poems written in their honor. Uga flies free on Delta, has an air-conditioned doghouse and an official Student ID Card, eats steak, attends social affairs, occasionally wears a tux, has appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated, in Coca Cola ads, in Playboy magazine, in Animals Who's Who, on credit cards, in movies, TV shows--and more! Following lavish funeral tributes, Ugas I through V were interred in a mausoleum at Sanford Stadium with inspiring epitaphs outlining their achievements engraved on bronze tablets. Uga VI has already made a name for himself "woofing" his encouragement to a well-deserved SEC title in 2002. GO DAWGS and long live Uga VI.

  5. Despite the fact that I am from Georgia Tech, the long time feud of UGA, sarcastically, I am also an English bulldog lover, having owned 2 English bullies in my life thus far. I highly recommend this book to all bulldog lovers, even if they are not associated with UGA.

5 comments about Frogs, Toads, and Treefrogs (Complete Pet Owner's Manual).

  1. This book did a good job of telling about the different families of anurans, but there was very little practical information for the first time frog keeper. It isn't too bad of an investment, though, if you are trying to figure out what kind of frog you have.

  2. This is a good picture book which the kids just love to look at over and over. It is also fairly comprehensive on the "how-to's" of raising all kinds of frogs.

  3. This is a nice soft cover book my 12 year old loves it. It it easy for kids and adults to understand. Lots of great pictures and overall information! Its a very popular book I sell on my we page "Frogs and Amphibians". I own and use this book.it Covers many types of frogs and toads.

  4. this book ofers hundreds of species and the care and maitnence of each one. overall will help you learn how to properly treat your frogs!

  5. This is overall an exellent book. I do not think I agree with all the cage sizes Mr Bartlett states. Some of the one he reccomeds are larger than what most do. Still, if your a newbie, I would reccomend this book.
