5 comments about Cairn Terriers (Complete Pet Owner's Manuals).
- because it contains the most concise information and is also a good buy. When I sell my Cairn Terrier puppies, I always send a Barrow's Cairn Terrier book. The book is included with the purchase of the puppy to help the owner answer all their questions in regard to their new Cairn Terrier puppy. I also consult it myself for answers to questions. The pictures of the Cairn Terriers in the book are of good quality and variety.
- This is a great book! I love the pictures, and it's a very good book for any Cairn owner, whether a newbie or not. I highly recommend it.
- This book wasn't exactly what I thought it would be like. It is very short and doesn't have lots of specific details. It is however an exellent source overall. One great thing about it not having lots of details is that it is short and very easy to read the entire thing rather than just skim certain sections. I found the grooming section very helpful and informative. However I would have liked a little more information in the training section. Also I would have liked more details in handling those difficult puppy moments such as when they try to bite. I loved that this book is completely tailored to the cairn terriers rather than it being a general dog book. I definitely was not disappointed.
- I was really happy with the book. There were topics not mentioned in the larger books. The pictures of the Cairns are really good.
- This is a very informative book. It takes you from A - Z. It is also a great reference book. I would hightly reccomend this book to anyone who is thinking of adopting a Cairn Terrier. This is a good book for breeders to suggest for someone to read before adopting a Cairn.

4 comments about Bulldogs (Complete Pet Owner's Manual).
- This book was a good intro into what we needed to care for this unique breed however we got our Bulldog as an adult so there were about 5 Chapters that weren't applicable to us so I didn't read them- if you are a buyer considering purchasing an English Bulldog puppy this should help you get started.
- I believe this book is great especially for the new Bulldog owner. I'm in the process of buying my first puppy and I think the information in this book will help me along my way.
There's information on the breed history, health, grooming, training, and selection. Definitely worth purchasing.
- This book is a nice, easy to follow guide for people interested in buying a bully. It gives basic care instructions, a short history, product info and such to help you make your decision and let you know if a bulldog is right for you, or, more importantly, if you are right for a bulldog.
- If you are a new dog owner, may you like this book. It have a information about care, training...But if you love bulldogs and are looking for information about the breed, don't buy this book. The only thing that is about bulldog are the pictures and the standard.
Also in portuguese: Se você é um dono de cão inexperiente, talvez goste deste livro. Ele traz dicas de higiene, cuidados, etc. Mas, se você está procurando mais informações sobre bulldogues não o compre. As únicas informações específicas da raça são as figuras, fotos e o padrão no final do livro.

2 comments about Training the Disaster Search Dog.
- Knowing Shirley and having been there for the evolution of the Disaster Search Dog standards, I can say this is the best - and, so far, only - book to use for this category of training. Completely understanding what needs to be done and stating the process clearly, her book is the starting place for anyone contemplating FEMA Disaster Dog work. You need to be part of a team to complete the training, but this book will tell you what you need to do and help you make the decision to commit to the process - or not!
- Shirley is upfront on what it takes to become a Disaster Search team. The team is the dog and handler and while the dog may have the skills the handler also has to be prepared to handle the disaster scene.
Shirley explains how agility skills can be translated into helping your dog become a Disaster Search Dog as part of her training triangle. Shirley also comprehensively lays out training goals and plans and how to implement them with your dog to make you successful in this new training.
The Appendix information is helpful for determining if your dog would be successful as a Disaster Search Dog or if your puppy would be. There's also useful instructions on how to build your own training equipment. The book uses photographs and diagrams to explain concepts to further learning.
Shirley will be a guest author at CSDogBookReview in August 2006 and many are looking forward to her visit!

5 comments about What the Dog Did: Tales from a Formerly Reluctant Dog Owner.
- This is a nice book for light reading about dogs. It's amusing, but not laugh-out-loud funny. It tells you a lot about beagles, and reveals a lot about the emotions of the author. There is no logical reason to love these dogs, but people do.
- Ms. Yoffe's wonderfully funny and sometimes poignant book of dog tales takes the reader on a tour of life like no other book I have read. Her hilarious wit and candor about both herself and her dog reveal the sweet, bittersweet and frequently quirky friendship between dog and human. Each chapter is like a short story all its own. The reader can enjoy this book leisurely by the fire as an after dinner treat, or as therapy for the latest dog adventure.
- A great summer read - light hearted and makes me smile. Finished this quick read in no time and enjoyed every minute. I passed this on to my sister to read and she's also worked her way through it quickly and been thoroughly entertained. She said she was reading it on the plane and found herself laughing out loud. Of course, she also has a beagle who acts very much like the dog in this book...that's why I knew she'd love it. I'm getting copies for all my beagle loving friends!
- I have been reading any book about dog/dogs I can get my hands on and this book is one I am glad I read. It is very funny- hysterical at times and I loved it. The author has a great style of writing and anyone who gets into dog rescue should write about it IMO....If you have a rescue dog you should read this.
- I'm a big fan of Yoffe's "Human Guinea Pig" series for [...]where she subjects herself to odd tasks (nude modeling anyone? phone psychic? starvation diet?) This book is about dogs. Mostly about her dogs, and those her family takes in until they can be adopted, but also many hearsay stories. Some are funny, some tragic, some ridiculous. Most demonstrate the lengths a dog owner will go to, or stoop to, for their pet. As the owner of two English Bulldogs, I related to most of the stories in this book. The fact that a lot of them didn't seem that strange, or that the aberrant behavior of the dog owners in these stories didn't phase me makes me wonder what effects my dogs have had on my perception of what's normal. I think Yoffe's stuff reads better in a shorter format. This book seemed to drag at times, but overall it was an enjoyable read.

5 comments about First Aid for Dogs: What to do When Emergencies Happen.
- The book has lots of resourses for the dog lover to have handy, my only drawback is that the paper the book was printed on is almost like newsprint paper, very cheap and rips easily, I would suggest taking the book apart and putting the pages in page protectors and then into a binder
- This book is so basic it doesn't even tell you what to do if your dog has a vaccine reaction. It only says what your dog should be vaccinated against. I thought it was going to have more info. I would not recommend this book to anyone who does not live close to a vet.
- "First Aid for Dogs" was one of three similar books I bought and is clearly the best, by a head and shoulders margin. It has almost 200 pages of information about a variety of conditions that can occur at home, in the neighborhood, or in the field. It makes very clear what to look for (symptoms) and then gives a helpful "decision tree" (if this is present, then do or look for ---; if that is not present, then look for or do ---). It is also very clear about what options you have in contacting a vet: Now! Same day. Within 24 hrs. Soon. Phone for advice.
It very clearly tells how to check symptoms. It covers almost every imaginable condition a dog owner would usually encounter. In the money it will save in trips to the vet that weren't needed, using this book will save its cost many times over. The book is very well organized into sections, Part 1, What to do first, how to make splints, etc,; Part 2, What to do next, checking symptoms, what to observe; Part 3, First aid for various emergencies; Part 4, improving health, how to give/apply meds. The line drawing illustrations are simple, clear, and helpful. The index is comprehensive and useful. By comparison, one of the other books I bought (published by a university press and written by vet school faculty), is higher priced, has about one fourth the pages, and contains much less than a twentieth the information. "Always have injuries examined by a veterinarian" is neither sufficient or particularly helpful advice. For poisoning, it recommends "veterinary advice should be sought." The third first aid book I bought was for outdoor dogs (I have a Lab). It has a little less than half the pages that Fogle's book contains. The topics it covers are adequately treated but I've found nothing covered that is not also in Fogle's book.
- When my wife, Amy, and I bought Sparky, our pet pekinese, we picked up this book, though we hoped to never need it. It was so clearly written and easy to use that the entire family read it. When our oldest son, Ryan, used it to save Sparky from choking on peanut butter, we realized just how valuable the advice in this book is. Thank you, Bruce and Amanda, for saving our dog's life.
- i love this book! it tells me what to do when there is an emergencey

4 comments about Storey's Guide to Raising Horses: Breeding/Care/Facilities.
- I originally got 'Raising Horses', from the library. My daughter's horse had a 'baby'(our first). This book held so much, and such great information that my family decided to order this book and 'Training Horses', both by Heather Smith Thomas. I highly recommend Ms Thomas books to anyone, at any horse knowledge level.
- Out of all the horse care books I have read.. This one is very clear and covers most every area in raising horses. Anyone looking for a good horse care book, this one is the best I have found. I have other horse care books but I refer to this one the most.
- I have owned, raised, and trained my own horses from a very young age and even though I already know the basics, I found this book to be very useful. From basic horse keeping to in depth descriptions of many equine health problems, this book is one that even the experienced rider and horse owner should have. It contains fabulous drawings and seperates each sections accordingly. I have not found a basic question that this book couldn't answer. It is a must have for any horseman.
- Has everything you'll need to take care of horses effectively. Many useful pictures too.

5 comments about The Guide to Owning a Ball Python.
- I have owned snakes but just bought my first ball python. I picked up this book at the pet store and read it cover to cover--a couple of times over. While it offers some good information to start, it leaves out so much. It leaves out common sense info that the new ball python owner will search high and low for. Such as: what do those rotten little mites REALLY look like, what are some real ways to REALLY get rid of them, what humidity level to really strive for--in actual numbers, when the first shed will occur, the fact that they are supposed to have "wrinkled corneas" (he didn't fail to shed his eyeball), how to gauge when your baby ball is ready to move from fuzzies to hoppers to adults, etc. After doing a lot of day-to-day research to supplement this average book, we found a FABULOUS vet who has personally owned and cared for hundreds upon hundreds of ball pythons. (If you live in/near Murrieta, CA, email me for her contact info.) I am really looking for a new book that will give me more confidence and comfort that I am caring for my sweet snake much more properly. And thank goodness for my vet!!
- I read both books. Whenever I encounter problems , I refer to the ball python manual. Many pictures posted are Boa constrictors. All the informations in this book can be found in web sites.
- This is a good book to own but should not be the first in your collection. It has excellent photos and can be very good for a reference but I find some of the information in it is inaccurate compared to other sources of information, which is why I don't think it should be your first Ball Python book.
- The Guide to Owning a Ball Python and The Ball Python Manual form the cornerstones for the Ball Python Owner's Library. Both are available here at a great price. The hi-res pictures and information found in this book, combined with the information in the Ball Python Manual are informative and everything you need to know about your Ball or Regal or Royal Python.
- this book has great pictures that will fasinate you and it tells everything you need too know about the ball python

5 comments about Shock to the System: The Facts About Animal Vaccination, Pet Food And How to Keep Your Pets Healthy.
- This is not the first book of this type I have read about vaccines, how awful pet food really is and alternative ways to keep your pet healthy. This book is very informative and has articles that relate to what I have found in other books by different authors, so there is a real problem in the pet food industry as well as with the vaccines and drug industry. Driscoll even gets into historical psychological facts about humans to show a correlation between human and animal side affect from drugs, vaccines, poor food and that modern medicine is not what it is cracked up to be. I have seen first hand what modern medicine can do to cats. I rescue, break up colonies and adopt them out. I have seen Revolution give cats seizures after only a couple day, high fevers for now reason appear after about two weeks for no reason. One of my cats has a burn from where I put the Revolution. This is a pesticide, I knew this, but I am having a really bad time with ear mites and was at my wits end. I have not used conventional anything on my cats in eight years and regret even this time. Revolution is a suppose to be safe and the conventional vet I bought it from thought I was a fool for waiting so long to use it. My cats are indoor only, but the rescues pose a problem sometimes and with all black cats I missed the ear mites in one. I pay very close attention to my cats and this is why I caught the problems. Most people put Revolution and their cat or dog and send them out the door. And, especially a cat, if it does not come home for a few big days no big deal. They have no idea the animal could have been suffering badly. I a dog they will probably run it to the vet and no one will suspect the Revolution is the culprit because the drug company says it is safe. Vioxx was said to be safe and how many other drugs are now under the gun for being not safe. Please get Dr. Pitcairn's book Naturally Healing for Dogs and Cats. Start with this and learn all you can about how to better the life of your dog and cat.
- A very eye opening book for those that truly care about your pets. If more people would read this there would be alot less pets going to the vet every month for allergies, etc..
A MUST READ!!!!
- I was able to get my hands on Ms. O'Driscolls other book which is out of print now,"What Vets Don't Tell You About Vaccines" and I found it admirable she openly admits in this book she doesn't blame vaccinations only for the illness of her pets. She now is factoring in other possibilities. "Shock To The System" is full of information but I did not find it an easy read. I have read many many books on this topic and consider myself well informed. However it was hard to break down this book in layman's terms for easy understanding and comprehension. I did "get it" but I had to re read many topics over again. I do like that she factors in other reasons as to why our pets are dying horrible deaths at such young ages! Such as pet foods, stress and genetics. I'm a firm believer that vaccines are harmful to our pets and any responsible pet owner really needs to research this before handing over their pet to a veterinarian to decide what is best for them. Ms. O'Driscoll does point this out. Maybe your vet doesn't have your pets best interest at heart but rather their pocketbook !! The more I read the more I understand this. This is a good book to have but please do not stop with it. Protect your pet and read on!!!
- Catherine goes into details with research from vets on the effects of vaccinations on our pets. Do they need annual vaccinations or are they causing our pets to become ill? Are vaccinations a moneymaker? Yes, pets should be examined yearly to insure good health, but vaccinations should not be the reason for this yearly health check. Catherine also encourages the reader to do more research on their own.
Catherine talks about food and stress and their effect on your animal's health. Catherine used to feed exclusively a raw diet, but has since modified that stance to allow that it can be too much 'energy' for some animals and that a cooked or prepared diet may be more appropriate. Rare for those who have made the conversion to admit that it may not be the 'best' for all dogs.
Shock to the System will make you think - not a bad thing!
I'm looking forward to her visit in May 2006 on CSDogBookReview and learning more from her.
- Catherine O'Driscoll presents Shock To The System: The Facts About Animal Vaccination, Pet Food And How To Keep Your Pets Healthy as an informed and informative study of the truths of stress and vaccinations and how such things may actually be the cause of illness in our pets. Readers will be enlightened as Shock To The System is one of the greatest analysis of modern realizations in pertinence to animal health. Shock To The System is very strongly recommended reading to all pet owners for its informational and "user friendly" information on all the elements of basic pet care.
