2 comments about Taming and Training Your First Budgerigar.

  1. Greetings...here's a real review for Risa Tetler's Taming and Training Your First Budgerigar. (also known to Americans as the Parakeet.) Her simple and easy-to-understand training method for these smart and crafty little birdies is very practical and can be followed by anyone with a desire to learn more about their behavior, and how we as pet owners should best interact with them. At this writing, I have 4 parakeets and I use this book along with other bird books, but I think I like Ms. Tetler's training method best. This book is priced low enough that it should be easily available to any parakeet/budgerigar owner, of any age. Her other books are also very helpful, especially the African Grey book if you are interested. Remember, though that every parakeet is different in temperment, and your success in training them will depend on your degree of patience as well as your pet's tolerance level for being handled and played with. Good Luck to all bird owners out there!

  2. i love this boo

5 comments about Welsh Corgis: Pembroke and Cardigan (Complete Pet Owner's Manual).

  1. The book was filled with good information regarding the breed and temperment of the Corgi's. Although lacking some more specific details on training, it served to provide background material to help with training of the corgi puppy. I would recommend the book to any corgi owner wishing to know more about corgis in general, but there are better books for training.

  2. I bought this book while I was still puppy-hunting, and it was great. It has lots of tips and breed-specific info about both Cardigan and Pembroke Welsh Corgis, and was invaluable in helping me locate a good breeder and find the best puppy for us. It also has great tips for when you first bring your puppy home, and is full of gorgeous color pictures. A+.

  3. If you already are familiar with the corgi breed, you'll love this book because it's filled with marvelously appealing photos of corgi puppies! There's an unusual number of great photos, unusual even for a book about the breed.

The book also is right on the money with advice on how to raise your corgi to avoid behavior problems. These are working dogs, and if they are trained properly (and it's easy) they are a delight, but without that training they can dominate the household and be a real nuisanced. It's clear that the author knows a lot about the breed.

Most dog books are about dogs in general, with little about the particular breed. You get the impression that there's a general dog book on the word processor that's customized slightly for each breed. This is a book about corgis, written to be just about corgis, and full of great information that's useful for every corgi owner.

  4. The problem with many dog-related books is that they contain a few dozen pages related to the breed & the rest is filled with generic information that pertains to all breeds. This book in particular deals with corgis the whole way through. A great deal of helpful information concerning corgis appears within.

  5. We purchased this book to help us learn more about Corgis, as we were pretty sure we wanted to add a Corgi to our family. This is a concise book, with much Corgi-specific info (though the requisite all-dog info sneaks in, too). Great photos. Showed it to a breeder, and she liked it a lot, too.

3 comments about Labradoodle: Comprehensive Owner's Guide (Kennel Club Books Designer Dog).

  1. A lovely book! My husband and I own two Australian Labradoodles. They are absolutely wonderful dogs and this book gives the reader all the information (and pictures!) needed to fully appreciate this breed.

    We love our Doodles!

  2. This is a review for a book no one has asked J. Acomb "Typeface diva" to comment on a breed itself. I happen to like this breed and was looking for a book review not someone's smart comment.

  3. Designer dogs are mutts sold for expensive prices. They are not a breed, because breeds must conform to certain specifications- size, shape, temperament, and so forth. When you purchase a designer dog, you are effectivly buying a lottery ticket to what may either be the puppy you have been promised, or a genetic nightmare. When dogs of two completely different breeds are bred, you can have NO idea on what the puppies will look like. You can't guarentee what the coat will look like, how large or small they will be, what their attitude will be like, or whether or not they will have a plethora of genetic problems.

Because of this, thousand of designer dogs are abandoned to shelters when their owners realize that the dog was not what the breeder had promised them.

RESPONSIBLE BREEDERS DO NOT BREED DESIGNER DOGS!

If you want a dog of a specific cross, look at your local humane society! There are mutts abounds there, and they have been tested for health and temperament problems. Go to [...], and you can even search by type of breed for dogs and cats near your home.

Contribute by saving an animal for [...]$ instead of helping overpopulation by spending 500$ on a puppy whose future you can't be able to predict.

5 comments about The Encyclopedia of Natural Pet Care.

  1. This book is a wonderful reference book for all pet medical needs. It helps when your vet is not readily available (weekends). It describes many illnesses and conditions, what you can do to help keep your pet healthy.

  2. This was one of the few decent references I used in preparing my books, 8 Weeks to a Healthy Dog, The Allergy Solution for Dogs, and the award-winning The Natural Health Bible for Dogs & Cats. The book is well written and easy to understand, yet informative for owners who would like to explore natural care for their pets.

  3. We are very new to the holistic care for pets ... and we were looking to find a good book that would introduce us to this more natural method of looking after our dogs ...

Ms. Puotinen's book is everything that we could have asked for ... her first few chapters takes the beginner gently through the methods, means, whys and wherefore of holistic care. Her writing is clear, concise and sure ...

The rest of the book is (to our mind) quite detailed, with lots of specifics ... and we suspect will cater even for the more experienced.

The book takes the reader from feeding raw food & supplements, to aromatherapy & homeopathy, and even guides the reader through the more esoteric art of flower therapy and massage for pets. There is a wonderful chapter on common ailments and possible natural remedies.

The author draws from numerous sources of information & reference (all carefully indexed and referenced) and she reproduces conversations & interviews with other practitioners of the art (including vets). To beginners such as us, this is quite essential ... and we found great comfort, to learn that holistic care is not only an ancient art but is still actively practised today (and gaining much ground), by even those with medical and professional qualifications.

Interesting reading ... offering much to those willing to learn. Well worth the time and cost ...

  4. Because many natural remedies are ancestors to our modern pharmacopia, care must be taken with all drugs you give your pet. Please use these books carefully and under the supervision of your veterinarian. There is a reason why we are required to attend four years of post-undergraduate medical school in order to prescribe drugs and make medical decisions. All animals are complex organisms who vary widely among species and individuals. Drugs and herbal remedies that may be safe and effective in humans can kill cats and dogs. These species variations are not well understood, especially with regards to herbal medications. For example, onions can be deadly to cats, as can Tylenol (a drug that we feel is safe even for human children). Please don't leave your common sense at the (e)bookstore door. Saving money on veterinary care by using a book may cost you the life of your pet.

  5. This is an excellent book. It provided me with the information that I needed to save the lives of some puppies that were malnourished and dehydrated at 3 weeks of age due to the loss of thier mom. I would have lost the litter with out this book. I have since bought a goat....

3 comments about Faith Alone: Stories of an Amazing Dog.

  1. I did like the book. I would think that whoever picks this book is expecting to read about Faith and what her story is. Not expecting to find a Master Piece of Literature. It is not.
However, I found the book to be very entertaining, the author tells us the stories of the dog in a very understandable way. She talks about how blessed they are to have found and helped Faith, and how in the same way, she returns all those favors to the family and even more. How they have been able to do all sort of fun stuff while taking the doggie to shows and other places to spread her message. How Faith brings hope and always a beautiful smile to everyone. The only thing I would improve is the quality of the pictures in the book. I would have liked to see better quality pictures in a color insert or something... but I would defenetly
recommend the book. I read it in one day and was liking it so much that I could not stop reading until i finished it.

  2. I was very disappointed with this book. The author jumps all over the place & doesn't keep things a little in sequence. Looking back once in awhile is one thing but she jumps around in the whole book. It has some very touching moments when the dog ministers to people with problems but that doesn't make it the book I was hoping it would be for the very expensive price tag for such a small book. I would not buy her other books. Very poor writer. Wonderful dog mom & amazing dog though.

  3. THIS SECOND BOOK IS AS WONDERFUL AS THE FIRST FAITH THE DOG BOOK. IT IS SO INSPIRING AND FULL OF WARMTH. FAITH IS NAMED PERFECTLY AS THE DOG IS A SPECIAL ANIMAL AND TRUE TREASURE. I THANK JADE AND HER FAMILY FOR WRITING THE BOOKS AND SHARING FAITH WITH EVERYONE.

3 comments about Rabbit Health in the 21st Century: A Guide for Bunny Parents.

  1. This is the second time I purchased this book. I owned the first edition and when the second came out, I had to have it. The book is greatly reassuring at 11:30 at night when your discover something wrong with your bunny and the vet won't be available until morning. My our case, the book enabled us to diagnose our bunny's diabetes, something that our vet missed even though she is a "bunny expert". A must for every pet rabbit owner!!!

  2. Since rabbits are prey animals they hide illness really well. That's why its important for rabbit keepers to know how to see even the faintest signs of illness and what they mean. The book educates the reader on common illness and their treatments and more chronic illnesses. The author covers drugs, how safe they are, and what they do and discusses alternative medicine. The book has also been reviewed by a vet before publishing so the information can be trusted. This goes beyond what a standard rabbit care book, this is a rabbit health book. Use it as a supplement to a good rabbit care book like the House Rabbit Handbook or Rabbits for Dummies. I recommend this over the Rabbitopaedia, which has incorrect information in it.

  3. This is a wonderful book for any bunny parent who wants to learn more about specific rabbit illnesses. I have referred to this book quite often when one of my bunnies seems "out of sorts". The chapters include Being Prepared, Common Rabbit Health Issues, Chronic Ailments and Aging Bunnies, Care of the Chronically Ill, Diagnosis and Conventional Treatments, Alternative Medicine, Knowing When to Say Goodbye, and Coping with Loss. When you know more about common rabbit illnesses, the more prepared you'll be if something does happen to your bunny.

4 comments about Small Dog Breeds.

  1. of all small breeds. I was happy to see that both the pro's and con's were presented. I am a dog lover and it is important that people know the commitment and the personalities before committing to a puppy or dog.

  2. Good book for dog lovers. If you are trying to decide whether or not to get a small dog, buy this book. Great pictures. Lots of reminders about the important differences between small and large dogs. Nicely succinct descriptions of breed characteristics and origins, temperament, height and weight expectations, and especially doggy attitude.

  3. This book, made in the Barrons fashion, has wonderfull photos and adequate information on various small dog breeds. Actually this book had a few breeds more than I expected to be in the book like the small Podengo. I was rather confused on why the Keyz was listed...being around 50lbs. I don't consider it a small breed?! But a good book all around for those who are mainly interested in the small end of the canine spectrum.

  4. The tittle of this book is Small Dogs. Some dogs are big and some are small. Some are cute and some are not.The dogs also have feeling to not just us. Dogs have different Lke sometimes they feel lonely some dogs don't some feel happy. If you chose a small dog I think you made the right one. Dogs are really great pets to have but it is your choce.I think dogs are pertect pet. So just get a pet if you want If you don't then you don't bye.

2 comments about Bach Flower Remedies for Animals: The Definitive Guide to Treating Animals with the Bach Remedies.

  1. The book is an excellent source of information if you have pets or are in the pet industry.

  2. As a caretaker of six cats and a dog, I have used Bach Remedies for years with my animals but I've always had to refer to books focusing on the use of the remedies with humans. This book has come to my rescue and I especially like that there are separate chapters on cats and dogs. There is also a separate chapter on use of the remedies wih horses.

The best feature of the book is the second chapter "Using the remedies" where the authors spell out the animal behaviors that can indicate a need for each of the 38 remedies. For example, Crab Apple is the remedy for cleansing and is indicated for a animal who does excessive grooming or chews on its fur or feathers.

The only negative aspect for me, as an American, is the very British slant in the resources lists and in the case studies. However, that is a small complaint in the overall usefulness of this title.

5 comments about Happy Kids, Happy Dogs.

  1. Very good book, more geared toward introducing your dog to a new child rather than vice versa (which is what I was looking for) though it was a worthwhile purchase as it had lots of things to teach your child about dogs so that was helpful.

  2. I've been teaching dog and baby classes at our humane society and local hospitals for seven years, and despite my own plans to write a similar book, I was thrilled to read this book. It's all there: great step-by-step training plans, informative photos and descriptions of body language and lots of information about how to "train" your child to be safe and to be a good friend to dogs. I recommend it as my first choice for expectant parents and parents of small children.

  3. Much more informative than some other books on market for same subject. Shumannfang goes into much more detail on training tips for focusing your dog as well as the importance of remembering to be in control of all situations. Too many parents trust the dog and kids to play together with minimal to no supervision, including professionals who should know better. Shummanfang stresses the need to consult trainers and veterinarians/veterinary behaviorists to insure baby safety and to be fair to the dog. Definitely a must read. S. Loter, DVM

  4. This "how to" book is a must for all dog owners who are expecting a new baby. You know how much you want to do what's best for baby and your beloved dog, too? Well, this is your answer!

  5. As a dog behavior consultant and trainer I frequently work with parents seeking to prepare their dogs for the new arrival or who are already parents and experiencing difficulties with the family dog. This book provides excellent support with easy to follow, practical, step-by-step exercises, useful photos depicting dog behavior cues, a realistic portrayal of the parent-dog-child relationship and wonderful resources. It encompasses dog-child interaction from infancy to teen. I am delighted to have Happy Kids, Happy Dogs to recommend to my clients. A must for parents to be or anyone who shares their lives with children and dogs.
