5 comments about From My Hands to Yours: Lessons from a Lifetime of Training Championship Horses.

  1. I liked the book but I was a bit disappointed that there wasn't MORE details on the horse language. I plan to reread so I may feel different later. I would like to see more about older horses instead of younger horses starting from scratch.

  2. Monty Roberts work has saved my poor horses from many mistakes, and this wonderful dossier of his methods of educating people to partner their horses is the best book yet. his philosophy is pure gold. if you love horses this book is a must.

  3. A great tool for anyone who want training horses without a professional trainer. This book is a valuable tool of knowledge to any new rider. The descriptions of EQUUS, Robert Monty training methods is easy to understand. I think it would be useful book for anyone interested in making not breaking young horses. Great Book!!!, Great Tool !!!.

Gran Libro!!!, ¡Gran Herramienta!!!.

  4. This is a wonderful book! I finally received it and I think is the best book of horses I've ever read!

  5. Gentle training that is based on a real expert. This man trains for the Queen of England. I have never seen better illustrations in a horse training book. Or a more comprehensive problem solver.

2 comments about The Holistic Health Guide: Natural Care for the Whole Dog (Terra-Nova Series).

  1. Not exactly what I would call a good "reference" book since a good many of his statements are not specifically cross referenced with other supporting holistic information/practitioners. For a field that is still largely unregulated, opinions/approaches are still widespread even on some of the most basic of issues like vaccinations. Providing some cummulative consensus would prove more substantive and demonstrates to the reader these statements have been thoughtfully researched. Of course as with any 'advice' obtained from book reading, it is always best to consult with your own trusted vet before making any changes in veterinary treatment.

This book does cover the very broad spectrum of topics within holistic/integrative veterinary medicine, but does not provide enough depth for practical applications. That said, this is one of the most well made books I've had in years. The hardcover binding is of library quality, as are the heavy-weight high gloss pages. The page layouts are very asthetically pleasing both in design, type-face, and color illustrations, so the reading is quite pleasant.

If you are new to the world of holistic veterinary medicine and don't mind spending $15 to get your feet wet, then I would recommend starting with this book. Otherwise, I would recommend Dr. Pitcairn's New Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs and Cats along with The Nature of Animal Healing : The Definitive Holistic Medicine Guide to Caring for Your Dog and Cat.

For ongoing, up-to-date topics and information, consider a subscription to The Whole Dog Journal (a monthly periodical, well researched and cross-referenced with a core focus on holistic practices and applications).

  2. It is hard to describe how much I love this book

Most of us who have dogs in our lives consider them part of the family. We all know how it feels to not know how to help them when they hurt. We have all been in a position where we just don't know where to turn. Even the simple questions can sometimes be difficult to answer. We are fortunate to live in a time when science has made great strides in dealing with health issues for not only ourselves, but our pets as well. We also have the benefit of the ancient wisdom of eastern medicine. With all of these opportunities why just take advantage of one or the other? Dr Doug helps to find the answers. He uses his experience with both Eastern and Conventional medicine to explain how a balanced body, mind and spirit is important not only to ourselves but to our canine companions as well. This is not only an informative read, but an entertaining one.

Are you questioning the need for vaccines? Do you wonder if you should use a flea treatment for your dog? Does acupuncture really work? What about those herbal remedies? Chiropractic for my dog? Do you just not know the best way to ensure that your dog is getting the best possible care? Does massage really help my dog? What is homeopathy anyway?

This book shows a typical pet lover how to care for their dogs in the healthiest and most compassionate and helpful ways. You will never regret having this book on your shelf, or in your hands when your little friends need you most.

If you have a dog, you need this book. If you don't have a dog, but are interested in holistic care, read this book.

Now if only Dr Doug would write one for my cats!

5 comments about Breeding a Litter: The Complete Book of Prenatal and Postnatal Care (Howell Reference Books).

  1. Breeding A Litter

If you ever plan on breeding a litter or even if you have one by mistake, this book has some valuable information.

I breed toy poodles and have found this book very useful. Along with advice from a good veterinarian, some background information on genetics, and a solid understanding of the AKC breed standards and you should be ready to go.
It's not easy and it may take a lot of work, and there is definitely no money in it, but if you're truly trying to Improve the breed it can be a lot of fun.

Highly recommended for anyone who breeds a litter.

    Gunner November, 2007

  2. This book was written 1n 1993.... even though the basics remain the same, there are other books on the subjet like the ones written by Myra Savant-Harris that are 100% more updated.

  3. I love this book. Great information wether you have a litter on the ground or are just thinking about it. I always reference this book. It's great to have around for everyday dog life as well. There's a lot of detail and I've had 2 litters and this book and The Joy of Breeding your Own Show dog were my staples! I couldn't have been more prepared without them!

  4. I found the author's views on early puppy socialization to be wrongheaded and even dangerous. With a large potentially aggressive breed the responsble breeder begins handling pups AT BIRTH. The daily frequent contact with pups enables them to handle stress and bond with humans from the beginning of life. It is a very poor breeder who does not handle those babies every day or even several times a day. Cutting nails, etc. begins later but holding, cuddles, breathing on, petting must happen at once. Worst book I've ever read on breeding and puppy socialization!

  5. I have been trying desperately to find a book that would give me complete and detailed information as far as breeding a litter. This was not easy to do, but Breeding a Litter is a wonderful answer all book. For the person just starting out in Dog Breeding this is a wonderful source. If you have a question this book definitly has the answer. Great Book!

5 comments about The Allergy Solution for Dogs: Natural and Conventional Therapies to Ease Discomfort and Enhance Your Dog's Quality of Life (The Natural Vet).

  1. i very important book to help you figure out what ity is why your dog is chewing her/his opaws food and other things how to fixes

  2. I was looking for a book that would help SOLVE my problems with dogs and allergies - this book just gives examples of what to look for (is it or is it not allergies) and suggests seeing the vet. Been there, done that - was looking for more creative ideas than seeing the vet and putting them on steroids (the standard prescription). I will keep looking for something to resolve my dogs' allergies and skin issues

  3. I have a dog that has severe allergies and, unfortunately, is one of the 1/3 or less who have not seen significant success with allergy injections (after 2 years...sigh). But, Dr. Messonnier offers many types of therapies/treatments for dog's with skin problems/allergies. His writing is honest and direct--this book made me realize that nothing will completely "cure" the allergies--but can make my dog's life more comfortable. In addition, the author does state that most treatments may not be the "sole" form of treatment--that they have to be used in conjunction with several other treatments. Right now, my pup is trying some homeopathic remedies along with conventional ones. And, I am still trying. This little book is pretty comprehensive. It gives the WHYs along with the HOWs to treat. I disagree with the other reviewet that the author does not talk about treatment. Over half the book is on treatment. Recommended with those who struggle with the irritating and frustrating problem of canine skin allergies.

  4. While this book is great if you simply want to learn about what allerges are, it does not give advise on how to treat the problem yourself. It will help you to have an informed discussion about the topic with your vet, but if you are wanting to learn how to treat your animal or what suppliments to use, this is not the book for you.

  5. I write MacAnswers, a question/answer column for Great Scots Magazine, a publication for Scottish Terrier owners. The question I wanted to tackle for the September/October issue was about allergies. However, I was tempted to put that subject on the back burner since entire books can be written on allergies in dogs and how to control them. Fortunately, I found Dr. Messonnier's book The Allergy Solution for Dogs. This new book does indeed provide the solution for dog owners who are willing to invest more time and interest in solving their dog's discomfort than a monthly trip to the vet for a steroid injection. Dr. Messonnier's holistic approach to allergies makes sense, and I highly recommend this book to any dog owner who is dealing with the frustrations of a dog that itches and itches. Breeds the book lists which have an especially high incidence of atopic dermatitis, a genetic disease which predisposes dogs to skin allergies are: West Highland White Terriers, Cairn Terriers, Shar-peis, Scottish Terriers, Lhasa Apsos, Shih Tzus, Wirehaired Fox Terriers, Dalmatians, Pugs, Irish Setters, Boston Terriers, Golden Retrievers, Boxers, English Setters, Labrador Retrievers, Miniature Schnauzers and Belgian Tervurens.

5 comments about True Confessions of a Veterinarian: An Unconditional Love Story.

  1. This book is so heartwarming and loving. These short stories share with us that these people are also animal lover. They would do whatever they had to help that animal to live a long and happy life.

  2. This is an enjoyable and enlightening book. The tales are short, funny, educational, and personal. Anyone who loves animals will love this book. I hope there is a followup book with more stories.

  3. I have so enjoyed reading Dr. Witiak's book. It has brought giggles, tears, and insight into the field of veterinary medicine. This passionate doctor shows his love for his patients and their owners through cleverly written snippets of interactions. His writing reminds me of James Herriot, one of my favorite authors, who wrote about his life as a veterinarian. It is a compliment when some of his pet owners say, "We wish you were our family's doctor." Truly a delightful book!

  4. Gene Witiak's TRUE CONFESSIONS OF A VETERINARIAN reveals him to be a caring and insightful person. Clearly, he cares about both animals and people, has lots of empathy for both, understands their strengths and weaknesses and how to maximize his skills to advance their welfare.

This book is delightfully written with an excellent blend of humor and seriousness. A great read!

  5. Gene Witiak has been my personal veterinarian for 36 years. He is very fine man. I was thrilled when I heard he was writing a book. The book is full of stories both happy and sad about his lifes work of over forty years. The book also has many funny moments. Anyone who has every owned a pet or is an animal lover should read this book.

5 comments about Ultimate Dog Grooming.

  1. This book is a good general reference to various dog breeds and typical grooming styles. Where the book falls down is that each breed, other than a few common breeds, is given very little details. For example, the Chinese Crested, which I was interested in, had no pictures to show the grooming, just a small paragraph. As well, no alternative cuts are suggested for some of the breeds that have several cutting styles, only the standard cuts are given.

  2. This book is not a complete guide to 170 dog breeds.

This book does an OK job of covering the health aspects of grooming. I wouldn't say that it does a better of job of any of your standard "All about dogs" book.

This book is more of a guide on how to groom a dog for show. If your dog is of a breed where the dog is groomed similarly for show as it would be groomed as a pet, this is a great book. If your dog is of a breed where a show worthy grooming is the complete opposite of a functional pet grooming, like maltese, yorkie, or any of the long haired breeds, this book will be useless. Unless you love looking at cute adorable doggies.

  3. Focuses exclusively on grooming - which is good. Covers wide range of breeds - also good. Wish there are more grooming styles featured for the various breeds especially long-haired ones. Only poodles were featured in a number of grooming styles.

  4. I found this book to be full of helpful information with clear instructions and explanations. The pictures are excellent. After reading this anyone would feel comfortable approaching any type of coat. It would be perfect to have in front of you in the salon and it lists every item needed for each design. It goes into great detail of the more tricky styles, as well as combatting any problems. All the info is here. Well worth the purchase.I see myself keeping this one for many, many years to come.

  5. I really like this book. I found it to be very informative with lovely pictures, it does'nt get to technical and has clear instructions on how to cut the coats of the dogs. For someone who is fairly new to the industry I certainly found this book very useful, I think you will too.

4 comments about The Guide to Owning a Box Turtle.

  1. I recently bought a box turtle and this book was very useful! It's great for anyone who has a box turtle or who is thinking of buying one. The pictures are beautiful and helpful as well. Full of great information on feeding, housing and much more.

  2. An excelent source of information on Box turtles of all types. Details about many species and subspecies and incredible eye catching photographs with expert discussion.

  3. Without this book my Coura Amboiensis would have been a less happier turtle. A really good book, beautiful pictures.

  4. This is a great book! All of the photos are in color, and there are pictures of every kind of box turtle you could possibly find. There are also pictures of products and foods for box turtles. The book tells you where to get a turtle, what to do if your turtle is sick, how and where to house them, how to breed and hibernate them, and how to take care of baby box turtles. The pictures are beautiful!!! If you have a box turtle, then this is a really cool book.

5 comments about Herbs for Pets.

  1. An excellent source of easy to read information for a beginning herbalist.

  2. Very thorough description of the different herbs and their uses, but the book is organized by herb. It would be much more helpful if it were organized by malady, and then listed which herbs would help.

  3. This is one of the most comprehensive books on this subject that I think I've ever seen. I had been looking for specific information for about a year, and this book had the answer for me. Great read, well organized, and extremely interesting. Worth every penny I paid for it!! I'll use it for my pets generations for years.

  4. Wonderful photos, super information, and a great reference. This is my standard herbal reference for pets that I use in my practice and in the articles and books I write!
