1 comments about Greater Swiss Mountain Dog (Kennel Club Dog Breed Series).
- This is a really helpful book, which covers everything you'll need to know from training to healthcare, especially since we are first time owners of a Swissy. There are a lot of helpful tips and really great pictures. Overall, it was a pleasure to read and very helpful.

5 comments about Breeding a Litter: The Complete Book of Prenatal and Postnatal Care (Howell Reference Books).
- Breeding A Litter
If you ever plan on breeding a litter or even if you have one by mistake, this book has some valuable information.
I breed toy poodles and have found this book very useful. Along with advice from a good veterinarian, some background information on genetics, and a solid understanding of the AKC breed standards and you should be ready to go.
It's not easy and it may take a lot of work, and there is definitely no money in it, but if you're truly trying to Improve the breed it can be a lot of fun.
Highly recommended for anyone who breeds a litter.
Gunner November, 2007
- This book was written 1n 1993.... even though the basics remain the same, there are other books on the subjet like the ones written by Myra Savant-Harris that are 100% more updated.
- I love this book. Great information wether you have a litter on the ground or are just thinking about it. I always reference this book. It's great to have around for everyday dog life as well. There's a lot of detail and I've had 2 litters and this book and The Joy of Breeding your Own Show dog were my staples! I couldn't have been more prepared without them!
- I found the author's views on early puppy socialization to be wrongheaded and even dangerous. With a large potentially aggressive breed the responsble breeder begins handling pups AT BIRTH. The daily frequent contact with pups enables them to handle stress and bond with humans from the beginning of life. It is a very poor breeder who does not handle those babies every day or even several times a day. Cutting nails, etc. begins later but holding, cuddles, breathing on, petting must happen at once. Worst book I've ever read on breeding and puppy socialization!
- I have been trying desperately to find a book that would give me complete and detailed information as far as breeding a litter. This was not easy to do, but Breeding a Litter is a wonderful answer all book. For the person just starting out in Dog Breeding this is a wonderful source. If you have a question this book definitly has the answer. Great Book!

4 comments about Believe: A Horseman's Journey.
- Well written with feeling. A fast read. Enjoyable but nothing deep or of substantial substance.
- I have seen Buck in person and after seeing many self proclaimed "horse whisperers" knew he was something special. His writing is no different and both his books are not only a must read for people with horses, but anyone who wants a good story.
- Please read my review for Buck's book "The Faraway Horses," and read that book before you read "Believe." I can't say enough good things about Buck-- his way has truly changed my life. This book has the added dimension of having every other chapter be a true account from individuals whose lives have been changed and affected for the better by learning about Buck's way. Highly recommend.
- Buck has co-written a wonderful dedication to the healing power in the connection between horses and people. Having attended quite a few of his clinics and visited with him several times, I have seen how dedicated he is to the horse and to helping those people who are truly looking for a better way, not only in their horsemanship, but in their lives as well.
Well worth the read.
I gave it four stars instead of 5, because Far away horses was better....sorry Buck.

5 comments about Stablekeeping: A Visual Guide to Safe and Healthy Horsekeeping (Horsekeeping Skills.).
- You can always count on any book written by Cherry Hill to be full of great information, however this book covers areas a horse owner doesn't always think about. I must admit that I have ALL of Cherry Hill's books and refer to them often, along with her website, since I have recently returned to horse ownership after 20 years. The best part of this book is the emphasis on the safety of your horse. I would highly recommend this book to beginning horsemen, people like me who are returning horsemen, or any horseman who wants a solid review in good "horse sense". Amy
- I'd recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn how to set up and organize proper, clean, safe and efficient care for horses. The pictures are great, and make it a lot easier for the beginner to visually see what works. It's an excellent resource!
- This is an easy read. A Picture is worth a thousand words and there are a lot of photo examples. A great resource.
- I have 1 indoor arena, 1 covered arena, and can stall up to 100 horses. Cherry Hill writes in an easy to understand and very articulate manner information that anyone owning from one to One Hundred horses should read.
She has a keen and very healthy insight with a common sense approach to horses. I was lucky enough to meet her at "Road To The Horse" where she was one of the prestigious judges, and very impressed with her down to earth and friendly attitude. She has a true passion for horses and what is in their best interest.
I have at least 6 of her books and plan on purchasing the rest as time & money allow. You will get your moneys worth from her.

5 comments about Ultimate Dog Grooming.
- This book is a good general reference to various dog breeds and typical grooming styles. Where the book falls down is that each breed, other than a few common breeds, is given very little details. For example, the Chinese Crested, which I was interested in, had no pictures to show the grooming, just a small paragraph. As well, no alternative cuts are suggested for some of the breeds that have several cutting styles, only the standard cuts are given.
- This book is not a complete guide to 170 dog breeds.
This book does an OK job of covering the health aspects of grooming. I wouldn't say that it does a better of job of any of your standard "All about dogs" book.
This book is more of a guide on how to groom a dog for show. If your dog is of a breed where the dog is groomed similarly for show as it would be groomed as a pet, this is a great book. If your dog is of a breed where a show worthy grooming is the complete opposite of a functional pet grooming, like maltese, yorkie, or any of the long haired breeds, this book will be useless. Unless you love looking at cute adorable doggies.
- Focuses exclusively on grooming - which is good. Covers wide range of breeds - also good. Wish there are more grooming styles featured for the various breeds especially long-haired ones. Only poodles were featured in a number of grooming styles.
- I found this book to be full of helpful information with clear instructions and explanations. The pictures are excellent. After reading this anyone would feel comfortable approaching any type of coat. It would be perfect to have in front of you in the salon and it lists every item needed for each design. It goes into great detail of the more tricky styles, as well as combatting any problems. All the info is here. Well worth the purchase.I see myself keeping this one for many, many years to come.
- I really like this book. I found it to be very informative with lovely pictures, it does'nt get to technical and has clear instructions on how to cut the coats of the dogs. For someone who is fairly new to the industry I certainly found this book very useful, I think you will too.

4 comments about Storey's Guide to Raising Horses: Breeding/Care/Facilities.
- I originally got 'Raising Horses', from the library. My daughter's horse had a 'baby'(our first). This book held so much, and such great information that my family decided to order this book and 'Training Horses', both by Heather Smith Thomas. I highly recommend Ms Thomas books to anyone, at any horse knowledge level.
- Out of all the horse care books I have read.. This one is very clear and covers most every area in raising horses. Anyone looking for a good horse care book, this one is the best I have found. I have other horse care books but I refer to this one the most.
- I have owned, raised, and trained my own horses from a very young age and even though I already know the basics, I found this book to be very useful. From basic horse keeping to in depth descriptions of many equine health problems, this book is one that even the experienced rider and horse owner should have. It contains fabulous drawings and seperates each sections accordingly. I have not found a basic question that this book couldn't answer. It is a must have for any horseman.
- Has everything you'll need to take care of horses effectively. Many useful pictures too.

5 comments about Training Your Pet Hamster.
- my daughter read everything she could get her hands on about hamsters. this book actually gave her some new ideas that other books didn't cover. no, you can't train your hamster to fetch or roll over, but thru consistancey and handling, they are somewhat "trainable".
- Excellent product , found it very useful and easy to read and understand , my daughter used it with ease.
- I would have given the book a lower rating but it was only bad because it was so bland. The author assumes that the reader is a seven-year-old and about 20% of the book is baby-talk. It doesn't go into much detail about training. In fact, "The Hamster Handbook" by Patricia Bartlett (also sold at amazon) goes into as much detail about training a hamster. This book doesn't include much other information about hamsters other than obvious things and is mostly vague. I don't recommend this book, but highly recommend "the Hamster Handbook."
- This book is written mostly for young teenagers and will be great at interesting them in something not electronic!
No offense to Nintendo or Microsoft, but there really is life beyond the cursor! I am one of very few in Egypt who bothers owning pets - I have a hamster, an African Grey Parrot (see my reviews on Keeping African Grey Parrots, and of The African Grey Parrot Handbook), plus two lovebirds, two cockatiels, two dogs, one cat and four tortoises. I thus have found Amazon a great source for pet keeping books. Another good book for hamster enthusiasts is HAMSTERS, A COMPLETE PET OWNER'S MANUAL. I have, though, chosen TRAINING YOUR PET HAMSTER as the must-have. Buy it before you get or give the pet hamster!
- This is a pretty standard hamster care book. The writing style often gets a bit insipid, but the information is gotten out.
For beginners, they'll get basic information. The title is misleading as hamster training isn't the focus of the book. There is a little on the idea of clicker training and conditioned response, but this part is very thin. In fact the book goes more in depth on the author's personal preferences for cages. They laud Crittertrail and SAM set-ups glossing over the cons of using these types (like these are easy for a Hamster to escape from), while presenting very minor disadvantages as major ones in other set-ups like 10 gallon aquariums (like cleaning it)or wire cages (can't use tubes). I'm afraid that having to take a bit of effort to hose a cage down, or providing alternative tunnelling toys are nothing compared to ESCAPING! They do not mention how much cage room a hamster actually needs. If they had this would discount their favorite cages. Still, that would only make this a 4-star book and I gave it 3. This is because when going over the information for choosing a hamster, they don't have their priorities straight. When talking about going to a breeder they list that breeders have breeds and coat colors not available at pet shops as the first reason. Then almost as an afterthought tag on a sentence that the hamsters would be hand tamed and used to humans. As someone who appreciates an animal for themselves this kind of attitude is extremely elitist and snobby. As if an animal's worth is only in its looks and the joy in having it is to show off that rare color or breed. In addition, much of what is said is taken off verbatim from various Internet sites. Based on the copyright dates of the book and update information on the websites I know it's not the other way around. Despite this, this would be a pretty basic book to get if you are thinking of owning a hamster. However, I would recommend the Hamtaro Hamster Care Guide instead.

5 comments about Blue Dog - Note Cards.
- I received exactly what I ordered and quickly. I have a friend who admires my silkscreens and I want to give her these cards for Chanukah.
- I love these note cards. While my husband and I lived in Louisiana we went to George Rodrigue's gallery and fell in love with the Blue Dog. I just had to have these notecards!
- I collect the Blue Dog Calendars for the art (a Blue Dog for every week of the year!). Rodrigue now has a new publisher/printer and the change is very noticable. The calendar for 2004 looks more childlike, with a garish bright yellow background on the cover and bright yellow plastic spiral spine (don't know what else to call it). The print quality is not as good as past calendars either. However, it is a great deal for the price. I LOVE the page with Louis Armstrong and Blue Dog. I've only seen this print in expensive Jazz Fest posters.
- If you like Blue Dog (and I do!), you will love these cards. It's not clear in the description, but this set comes with 15 total cards - 3 each of 5 designs. The box is a real collectable, too. I'll buy more - to send and to frame!
- I liked them so much I orderd two more boxes. Now I have one to use, one to frame and one to keep untouched by human hands. The box they come in is as nice as the cards themselves.
