5 comments about Sheep: Small-Scale Sheep Keeping for Pleasure and Profit (Hobby Farms).
- If you want a quick introduction to keeping sheep then this is a really nice book which touches all subjects related to the topic.
After culling the pages about eating sheep and sheep history there are only about 85 pages of quite compact and very useful information on sheep keeping. In parts of the book, every little sentence seem to contain at least one good advice for the sheperd. However, I wish it would have covered topics in a little more detail. I sometimes asked myself "why?" or "then what?", but picked up so many good ideas from the book it was absolutely worth reading. Whether new to sheperding, or an experienced sheperd, there should be plenty of snacks for you. I bought this book along with "Living With Sheep" by Chuck Wooster, and found this one an excellent supplimentary.
- I received this book from the breeder when I got my first sheep. I really enjoyed information in the book. I love the extra bits of information about things like the history of domestic sheep and bottle lambs. The pictures are supurb. It is great to have a book that looks at sheep raising from a homesteading or pet persepective instead of a commercial operation. This is an easy read, with great tone and flow.
- I bought this book in hopes of having a "catch all" reference for our new adventures as shepherds. The book is packed with information in an easy to read format. I will still have to supplement the book with other publications, but it does cover the basics and would serve as a beginner's manual. One thing we have begun doing recently is printing off extension publications and compiling them in a 3 ring binder, arranged by topic. This book is easy to read and would be a good reference for 4H students.
- I have read alot of books on sheep for years, because I own sheep and what to do my best at it. This book was probably the best book on sheep I have ever read. The information was great and easy to understand this book is right on. I have told alot of sheep people I know to get this book
- I read this book being a complete novice on raising sheep. After reading this book, I really feel I have enough knowledge to raise my own sheep on my hobby farm.
The author (Sue Weaver) writes in a wonderful down-to-earth and very easy to understand style. She covers everything sheep such as: choosing the right sheep breed for your needs, sheep disposition & behavior, sheep housing, nutritional needs, shearing & selling fleece, hoof trimming, delivering lambs, common sheep diseases and how to vaccinate your sheep. Whether you're a total novice like me or an old pro, I think you could learn a lot from this book.
This book is put together on nice glossy paper stock. It also has tons of excellent photos. What I love most is that the author shows many photo's on how to correctly do many procedures w/sheep, such as vaccinations. Also this book sports an excellent resource directory. The directory includes an online directory, sheep organizations, sheep suppliers, state & university resources and my favorite the book and periodical guide to all sheep.
The only thing I would've liked in here (tho, I know it goes way beyond the scope of this book) is a chapter that had every sheep breed with photos and characteristics listed. Tho, the author does go a bit into what breeds are best for milk and for wool.
This book is a great investment. I also have Sue Weaver's other book on raising chickens and it is wonderful as well. If you're reading this Sue, how about a book on raising Ducks and one on raising Alpacas next? :)

5 comments about Terrarium and Cage Construction and Care.
- I found this book very useful and informative. I have buildt terrariums since I was a child, collecting all kinds of scaly pets and the number one rule my mom made me follow was making them escape proof. These did not always work out well with missing snakes turning up in the laundry and a toothy alligator taking a bite of my hand when I first started out collecting such wonderful creatures. Boy do I wish that I had this book when I was a kid. This is a great book for both beginner and someone like me who's always looking for goood ideas on the subject.
- The book wasnt everything I had hoped for. It did not cover the false bottom method for terrarium/vivarium construction. Seemed out dated and very very basic. Great for ideas, not for construction. Would maybe recommend book for reference but not a single resource.
- The title of the book is absolutely misleading!
I ordered this book together with 7 others and my hopes in this book was totally smashed the moment I opened and browsed through. It contained very little information on what I thought it should and many of the books I already owned had more info. The terrarium set ups were very unexciting. I tried going through amazon.com again trying to look for more books pertaining to "this subject" but much to my dismay, this was the only book recommended. This book contains more on recommendations of terrarium inmates rather than cage construction.
- I bought the book being a person who loves zoos and was expecting it to cover the materials, chemicals, theorys, and design/setup of the cage and what plants to use with what lighting but none of the above really appeared in the book a completely misleading title and poor purchase.
- For each setup, a lot of space devoted to different types of animals and each types general care. Would have liked to have more information on design ideas, construction tips, and maintenance of actual terrariums.

5 comments about Maine Coon Cats (Complete Pet Owner's Manual).
- MY CAT IS A MIX BUT ABOUT 75% MNCOON. THIS BOOK DID EXPLAIN ALOT OF QUIRKS AND BRED IN HABITS I NOW SEE IN MINE. THEY ARE CRAZY CREATURES.
VERY INFORMATIVE AND PICS GALORE,THANKS-LBSMITH
- I found this informative and well rounded. Fun, not stuffy--with lots of pictures. For this price, a must-have!
- This is a good introduction to Maine Coon cats. Mostly, this is a "care and feeding of" book that could apply to any cat, which is what this book is really for. If you are new to cat ownership and have a Maine Coon, this will get you started.
We have Maine Coon rescue cats and we don't plan to breed any cats (preferring to adopt orphans--there's a glut of cats out there.) But if you were planning to breed Maine Coons, you surely would need a more comprehensive book than this slim volume. However, if you just want some general background about the history, pictures of coat colors and information about the general qualities of this breed, this book is just fine. The most valuable page is actually in the back, describing various illnesses, with a black and white drawing and description of a cat "not doin' right", which is how a cat subtly tells you it is feeling sick. We caught our cat "not doin' right" and she was actually on the point of being seriously ill. We caught it in time--thanks to that helpful description --cats are sometimes not terribly expressive, purring even in pain and perking up if their beloved owners are around.
- I liked the book. It's a good book for people who don't know a lot about the maine coon cat breed. I found out several things I didn't know. Yes the end is a little generic, but it is only talking about how to take care of a cat, which would be generic. I think it's a good book for first time Maine Coon cat owners, such as myself.
- "Maine Coon Cats" is one of a series of cat books published by Barron's. It has been 'personalized' by inserting the breed name 'Maine Coon' into the title and various other places in the text. Most of text is about cats in general, but all of the book's photographs display big, fuzzy Maine Coons. And there are some specifics about this very special breed - the cost of a show kitten vs. 'just a pet', a short history of the breed, etc. We own a small Maine Coon cattery ('JustThisOnce' Cattery) with five current residents (if you don't count the humans). For a more specific book on this native American breed, I'd recommend "This is the Maine Coon Cat" by Sharyn P. Bass. The photographs are mainly black and white (and grainy), but the text is much more specific to Coonies, especially if you plan to show. I learned from Bass's book that our Maine Coons aren't unique in the way they scoop water out of their dish with a big, hairy paw and then drink it. Evidently, this is one of the breed traits that got Maine Coons mistaken for raccoons in the first place!
I don't want to turn you away from Barron's "Maine Coon Cats - A Complete Owners Manual". It contains very good generic information about raising cats, and the photographs are really lovely. It just has that 'mass produced' feel about it.

5 comments about Boxers for Dummies.
- The book about Boxers has lots of information about the breed. Those of us who are unfamiliar with the breed, gathered lots of things that will help us in the care and nuturing of this wonderful animal! Who knew that big old grizzly looking Boxer was a sweetheart, full of affection and devotion! Great reference book to have on handle, especially if you're rearing a pup.
- We've just become the owners of a boxer pup, and used this book before and after he joined our family. The book is very easy to understand and contains a wealth of useful material. It also has a lot of general sections that would be relevant to any new pet owner. This isn't a book you would use for hard-core research, but I recommend it for the average new pet owner as an easy to read reference. It was well worth the price.
- I agree with one of the preceding reviews. Substitute beagle or French poodle for boxer and you have 90% the same book. I was looking for a little more insight.
- I really enjoyed reading this book on Boxers. I am researching dog breeds before I commit to a new family member. There was a careful balance of enthusiasm for the Boxer and warnings of their specialized needs AND the responsibilites of Boxer ownership.
I especially enjoyed the observations he made between male and female boxers, puppy training, and problematic behaviors.
Even if I don't decide to own a Boxer in the future, this was an entertaining educational read that I would recommend to all.
- Like most for dummies books, this is essentially a cut and paste of all of their other dog books with the word boxer inserted in place of dog. In a few cases it has stories of the writers experiences with boxers but this book is really nothing special. Try culture clash to get a better understanding of your companion.

5 comments about Beyond Basic Dog Training.
- The negative reviews are 180ยบ off the mark about this most excellent book. Not only is correction NOT encouraged at all, the word NO is NOT to be used with this method at all. Ms. Bauman teaches that to be WRONG more than OK, it is a learning opportunity for the dog. There are NO, nada, absolutely zero harsh corrections, only gentle "helps" to the dog when they don't understand the command. The (there is no other word for it)LIE that chairs were thrown or any other such horrible thing isn't even in the *realm* of truth about this book. This book stresses a method that will produce very very good results, and a methond in which the dog remains happy and pleased to do the work, a VERY far cry from the criticism that was launched at it. No "hang-head" obedience dogs will result from this book, only HAPPY, healthy, dogs EAGER to do these exercises, because it gives them such a sense of confidence. I trained a dog using this method back when the book first came out. We never went beyond novice because life got in the way. But the method is simply the best you'll find out there. There may be others that work, but you'll not wind up with a HAPPY dog to do it. With this method you will have a very happy and CONFIDENT dog.
- Beyond Basic Dog Training is a competent, if uninspired, account of Diane Bauman's methods for training dogs to perform Kennel Club obedience routines. The book is a series of short chapters covering most obedience exercises from Novice to Utility, as well as short discussions on training equipment and trialing tips. Due to the limited scope this book will not be especially helpful to the pet owner wishing to teach basic manners and practical obedience, though it could be a useful read for an obedience competitor.
The teaching methods themselves are old fashioned and rather boring. Dogs are pushed into sits, pulled into send aways, ear-pinched into retrieving. There is no discussion of other methods that can be used to achieve these behaviours (luring, shaping, capturing, etc), leaving the reader rather at a loss if the given method does not work for them.
Bauman's catch-phrase is that it is "good to be wrong", which means that a dog should not be corrected in the learning phase of training. Like most good trainers, she believes dogs should only ever be corrected if they are defiant, not if they are confused or frightened. Bauman discusses how to safely fit and use several types of correction collar, and how to determine which collar is best for a certain dog.
Bauman emphasises the importance of praising the dog for good work, but doesn't present a particularly coherent account on how to motivate a dog or utilise his drives. She does suggest using small food tidbits to reward dogs, but does not go into detail about how or when to deliver these. She does not discuss the use of prey drive or toy rewards at all, despite them being exceptionally useful for some dogs. Neither does she explain anything about operant or classical conditioning, or about marker words or bridges.
In conclusion, although I doubt any dog would be harmed by use of these methods, I also doubt that this method will get the best obedience performance out of every dog. Some dogs need more motivation than Ms Bauman provides, or do better with "hands-off" techniques, and this book unfortunately does not cater for the learning styles of these canines. However, it is still worth a read for kennel club obedience competitors, who might well pick up some useful tips.
- Two days ago, I was extremely excited about receiving this book in the mail. I was lulled by promises that the book would show me how to "become a thinking handler who can train a thinking dog" and how to encourage "dogs to learn by removing corrections for incorrect responses". Now here I sit utterly disappointed in having wasted money on a book that encourages people to pinch their dogs ears and to "use the collar choke approach for dogs who are not responsive to an ear pinch" (p.163 Beyond Basic Dog Training, Bauman). If you're not sure how to do the latter, the book has a picture of a dog being choked for your reference! Wow! This book is very outdated and needs to be modernized to reflect all of the advances that dog training has made in recent years. I have seen many handlers achieve stellar obedience scores through the use of positive training ...looks like I'll be turning to them for advice instead of this book.
- Bauman's book is a no-nonsense approach to obedience training with an eye on competing. She is thorough in her discussions and accurately provides details into the how, why, where and when to create the results that are wanted with training. I found this book to be very complimentary to other positive training books I've previously read. Would recommend this read to anyone who is a novice trainer like myself who wants/needs more information than they are receiving in a class setting. Additionally, I believe it would serve the trainer who must train alone.
- When then book originally came out it was quite forward thinking in its methodology. Fortunately for our dogs there has been a quiet revolution in dog training to a less coercive method of training. For example, her method of teaching sit involves pulling up on the collar while pushing on the dog. In short physical discomfort is being created for a command that the dog does not even know. Her methods are based on negative reinforcement. The correct response will make the discomfort vanish. This type of training can be effective if you have the right dog for the stress it will produce and if you the handler have great timing and can always perfectly and rapidly make all pressure vanish when the performance is correct.

1 comments about The Horse Training Problem Solver: Your questions answered about gaits, ground work, and attitude, in the arena and on the trail.
- The excellent review this book garnered from George Morris made me buy it, and once I finished it I knew that George was right: horsewoman at every skill level can learn from Jahiel. Her diplomatic and sensible advice to the people who asked questions about challenges they have with their horses are straightforward and filled with her philosophy: Do what's best for the horse. From answers to riders who feel that their horses are "trying to pull a fast one" on them--she says horses don't do that--or riders who see horses struggling with a problem--she asks if the horse is in pain, or confused?--she comes right to the solution. If you see a horse at the stable grinning from jowl to jowl you're probably looking at a horse whose owner just got one of Jahiel's books.

5 comments about Stablekeeping: A Visual Guide to Safe and Healthy Horsekeeping (Horsekeeping Skills.).
- You can always count on any book written by Cherry Hill to be full of great information, however this book covers areas a horse owner doesn't always think about. I must admit that I have ALL of Cherry Hill's books and refer to them often, along with her website, since I have recently returned to horse ownership after 20 years. The best part of this book is the emphasis on the safety of your horse. I would highly recommend this book to beginning horsemen, people like me who are returning horsemen, or any horseman who wants a solid review in good "horse sense". Amy
- I'd recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn how to set up and organize proper, clean, safe and efficient care for horses. The pictures are great, and make it a lot easier for the beginner to visually see what works. It's an excellent resource!
- This is an easy read. A Picture is worth a thousand words and there are a lot of photo examples. A great resource.
- I have 1 indoor arena, 1 covered arena, and can stall up to 100 horses. Cherry Hill writes in an easy to understand and very articulate manner information that anyone owning from one to One Hundred horses should read.
She has a keen and very healthy insight with a common sense approach to horses. I was lucky enough to meet her at "Road To The Horse" where she was one of the prestigious judges, and very impressed with her down to earth and friendly attitude. She has a true passion for horses and what is in their best interest.
I have at least 6 of her books and plan on purchasing the rest as time & money allow. You will get your moneys worth from her.

5 comments about Control of Canine Genetic Diseases (Howell Reference Books).
- I was advised by a breeder to get this book if I was interesting in breeding in the future.
As there is such a small gene pool here in Australia, I felt that I needed to get as much information as possible about possible genetic diseases and if they can be bred out.
Whilest I have not really started to read this book as yet, will start soon, I have been told that it is fantastic for new people who are looking to enter the breeding ring.
- This is the kind of book tha every breeder should have! Not only by clear way he puts how to track and understand genetic diseases, but by his proposes about Open Registries.
- Being a vet student I've always heard about how difficult genetics are and how it bores us to death. This book is written so well that there aren't too many technicalities or hard words to understand. It is extremely clear and well written and its a must for everyone intending to breed dogs.
-
This book should be on every dog breeder's bookshelf!
In the introduction Dr Padgett candidly writes:
` My goal is to help prevent serious genetic diseases in dogs, both in breeds and in kennels. If you learn the material presented here, follow the guidelines, and apply this information to your breed or your kennel, you will reduce the frequency of disease, and it will not take you twenty-five years to do it.
You need three things to accomplish this task: knowledge, information, and honesty. All three are within your control '
A professor of Pathology, one of the world's most celebrated researchers, writers and lecturers on the entire subject of canine genetic diseases, George A Padgett DVM has published numerous papers and has appeared before almost 100 breed clubs speaking on his specialty.
In his book ` Control of Canine Genetic Diseases' Dr Padgett addresses breed clubs and challenges them to encourage and reward members with honest information regarding the diseases within their lines.
He starts off by explaining the background, and then goes on to explain how to trace disease in your own dogs with a chapter that is titled ` The development of pedigrees'. In this chapter Dr Padgett teaches the reader to keep records and gives a number of scenarios of which the readers can test themselves to see if they are on the right track with this lesson.
Other topics he addresses are; modes of inheritance; the interpretation and use of pedigrees to determine the genetic status of given dogs and, the probable mode of inheritance of a trait; test mating; registries and prioritizing genetic disease; tables and probabilities; breed clubs and control of genetic disease; and the last chapter is aptly titled ` For the breeder '.
Dr Padgett is not a geneticist and doesn't claim to be one. He even admits that some of his data finding procedures would have geneticists screaming.
He is not suggesting breeders' refrain from ever breeding with an affected or carrying dog. He's realistic about breeding from the best dog from an overall perspective, but instead he explains about breeding out or diluting disease in order to lower the chances of producing affected animals, whilst maintaining honesty.
He clearly states that he acknowledges a breeder shouldn't ever breed their dog to an animal of lesser quality than what they want to represent them, their line and breed, just because they're making a test-mating.
George A. Padgett writes fluidly and convincingly and at times is quite amusing. I found his advice on prioritizing disease very reasonable. He explains the necessity to develop a hierarchy of disagreeability for various diseases by evaluating the severity of the disease, and its impact on the dog itself, and the people that own it.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and recommend it to every breed club, member and breeder whose goal it is to produce healthy, functional and beautiful dogs.
- A useful source of information on hereditary diseases of dogs, obviously slanted towards the USA scene. Just waiting for a UK author to produce a similar volume with less sweeping allegations of widespread canine defects amongst pedigree dogs.

5 comments about Tropical Freshwater Aquarium Fish from A to Z (Compass Guides).
- Exactly what I was looking for. A book with lots of photos of fish and brief descriptions and basic info on each. Easy to use, colorful, nice protective cover. High quality.
- This book has may types of fish profiles, including many popular aquarium fish, and great pictures. It has the nifty plastic jacket, which anyone with a fish tank will appreciate. It is a small enough book to bring with you to the fish store, and informative enough to make you glad you brought it.
- An OK book that is very brief in its details of fish species and occasionally slightly inaccurate with regards compatibilities. Very nice pictures that get it an additional star from me just because they make species identification a lot easier than some of other books. It has a nice plastic cover for those times when you're reading and dripping at the same time and is handily pocket sized for taking to the shops with you.
- Not a lot of detailed info, but it's a great visual reference guide. I love it and it's cheap!
- As someone new to the hobby, this book helped me tremendously in selecting not only what fish I could and should put in my new fish tank, but helpful tips as to how I should care for them (Ph levels, water temps, compatible types, etc.). I reviewed this book and read "The Essential Freshwater Aquarium" guide; both books help ensure that my first try as an aquarist results in a healthy environment for my fish. I was so impressed by the A to Z Guide that I bought one for a friend who has kept fish for over a year but was mixing fish indiscriminately without regard to the size of her tank or the type of fish already in the tank. We both now have a high enthusiasm for our aquariums and consult the guide before any new fish purchase. Highly recommended for new and experienced aquarists.

5 comments about Pets at Risk: From Allergies to Cancer, Remedies for an Unsuspected Epidemic.
- This Book is a God-Send! I was always at the vet, literally. I was there sometimes multiple times in a week at the bad times, and in the relative good times only a couple times in a month. You see I have 3 dogs and 3 cats, and between them I was literally spending thousands of dollars on vet bills for their various ailments and afflictions.
I was wondering why on earth my animals were always sick. I have 2 dogs and 2 cats that were diagnosed with IBD (Inflamatory Bowel Disease), and all my dogs had allergies with various sorts of secondary skin and ear infections that go with. Not to mention the occasional surgery to remove and biopsy a suspicious looking cyst, or lump that appeared here and there.
I was also spending hundreds of dollars a month on various medications for their chronic conditions. Yet, they just seemed to treat the symptoms and no the cause as my pets still seemed to get getting sicker.
Well, This book gave me the answer! 4 of my 6 animals (My 3 dogs and 1 of my cats) has tested positive for Low Cortisol as described in this book. After putting my animals on the Plechner Protocol (and working with my holistic vet does the testing and follows the protocol) they are now the healthiest they have ever been. So many of seemingly unrelated health problems in aniamls are explained by Low Cortisol and this book.
Buy It! Everyone Pet owner should have a copy. It not only saved me money from tons of vet visits, it most importantly helped me to improve my animals health by treating the root cause, instead of just the symptoms of their health problems.
- I read this book when my dog was so sick wth chronic ear infections (that were not responding to the typical prescription drugs) that she had to have 2 benadryl every 4 hours--and this is when she was already on a hypoallergenic diet. Three vets said she had food allergies (she did appear to react worse to some foods, and did somewhat better on duck and potato). Two vets said to try an elimination diet. We did, and could hardly add any thing back, as she NEVER seemed to get healthy enough after reacting to a new food to add another food. Well, I read this book in one sitting, and made an appointment immediately with the one vet in our state who is familiar with E&I dogs and Plechner. Our dog tested positive for the disorder--her cortisol levels were less than half than that of a healthy dog. She has only been on the medications for a few days, and she's stopped shaking her head and licking her paws. She's got her old playful attitude back--she hadn't wanted to play her favorite game for a couple of months. The best part is that she will very likely be able to eat well-rounded diet when she's better stabilized. What looked like food allergies was most likely food intolerances caused by her imbalance. Most E&I dogs can eat normal diet unless they have "true" food allergies.I'm in raptures because without this book, my dog would more than likely have struggled all her life with these problems, been treated symptomatically for what was a whole body glandular disorder, and continued to have a poor quality of life. This book is easy to read, compassionate and straightforward. Plechner pulls no punches- the test is expensive, and the medication regimen is usually for life. But he gives countless examples of diseases and symptoms that are often caused by E&I imbalance-- it's amazing and heartening to read that countless problems occur when the animal isn't making enough cortisol, and that these problems are fixable. He gives info technical enough to help any vet treat your animal--even if the vet has never diagnosed an E&I dog before. He sternly explains that E&I treatment won't fix true food allergies---but it will more than likely make symptoms caused by other kinds of allergies disappear. I am buying this book for friends who have chronically sick dogs, and lending my copy out to anyone who is curious. It's well worth the investment. My dog will be the first to agree!
- Veteranrian Alfred J. Plechner (a practicing graduate from the University of California-Davis School of Veterinary Medicine with thirty-five years of clinical work experience), draws upon his years of experience and considerable expertise in Pets At Risk: From Allergies To Cancer, Remedies For An Unsuspected Epidemic spotlights just how endocrine-immune imbalances can cause or exacerbate multiple medical disorders in our beloved animal companions. Offering practical advice for helping imbalanced dogs and cats with supplements; natural remedies for a variety of possible ailments; diet replacement programs, and so much, more, Pets At Risk also stresses the responsibilities pet owners face, as well as exploring the implications these groundbreaking discoveries have for we humans. Pets At Risk is essential, accessible, "reader friendly", and very strongly recommended for personal reading lists and community library Pet Care reference collections and supplemental reading lists.
- A friend sent me the Plechner book, "Pets At Risk". It went with me on vacation to Puerto Rico, where I read it cover to cover. There I was by the pool, reading avidly about canine endocrine disorders.
This is an absolutely enthralling read for anyone who cares about their pets' health. Vets have significantly improved their abilities to diagnose diseases, but are still grappling with treating the result versus treating the underlying cause. As an owner who has dealt with issues ranging from cancer to skin allergies to Addison's disease, I found Dr. Plechner's observations and insights providing "Aha!" moments. I've already ordered books for each of my vets, in order to discuss whether this treatment could work with some long-term issues in some of our pets.
- Good morning Dr. Plechner,
Just a note to say thank you. "Cassie", my Irish Setter who brought us together, turned 6 on New Years Eve. If you recall, she became ill with terrible skin allergies at 5 months old. No veterinarian, including Dr. Goldstein, specialists at Virgina Tech or NC State could help. Then I called you. Today she has an excellent EI-1 and takes Transfer Factor Canine Complete by 4-Life Research. She is down to 2mg Medrol a day and .2 Soloxine twice a day. "Cassie" is happy and active. We call her the gate keeper as she escorts our other dogs in and out of their play areas. Thank you for all you do. My breeding program will benefit Irish Setters because of your help. Hugs!
