5 comments about Soft-Coated Wheaten Terriers (Complete Pet Owner's Manual).
- This book is a completely comprehensive guide to owning a Wheaten. However, the writing is silly at times and there are a few things that are really meant for show dogs rather than a simple pet. Still, it has all of the really important info that one would need if considering to purchase a wheaten.
- The book has lots of great colored pictures, and is very informative on Wheatens. Worth the price.
- I purchased this manual for my daughter, as she just purchased a Wheaten Terrier and couldn't find a Wheaten manual any place locally. She told me that is was a perfect & very informative manual.
- Book shared some specific Wheaten info that I was not aware of but much of it was pretty generic information
- We're getting our first SCWT in a couple of days and this book has helped us feel much more prepared. Good tips and tricks for dealing with this bred.

2 comments about A Dog's Wisdom: A Heartwarming View of Life.
- It's kind of "cutsie", but not particularly full of insight. Just some observations most any dog owner would make.
- Hi, this is Margaret H. Bonham, the author. I want to tell you a bit about A Dog's Wisdom. It was a very hard book to write because it was very emotional. I decided to explore the reasons why dogs are so great. Dogs seem to have an inherent wisdom that we humans sometimes lack. They know to take care of their own, to party with wild abandon, and to love those who love us (and many times love those whom no one loves).
This book explores the unique relationship we dog owners have with our dogs. Over the years I've had the joy of meeting many wonderful dogs -- and even a coyote whom I affectionately called Maynard. I tried to put into words what I saw within those deep brown (or in some cases, blue) eyes.
To be honest with you, I can't read some of the stories without getting all teary-eyed. Yes, there are sad stories, but there are happy, funny, silly, touching and even amazing stories. I have found wisdom in so many dogs I've known. I bet you have too.

5 comments about Rhodesian Ridgebacks (Complete Pet Owner's Manual).
- Dont get me wrong, this book is a great read and I certainly recommend it to anyone who buys/owns a RR. The problem with the book is that when it comes to the training area or any specific breed information, the book is very general. This book is best for a new RR dog owner and a must for someone who has not had a puppy before.
- Rhodesian Ridgebacks Manual is pretty much right on with the temperment and traits of this breed. Quick read with helpful tips.
- This is not intended to be a comprehensive, indepth encyclopedia. BUt as a basic primer on Rhodesian Ridgebacks, it covers all of the key highlights and provides a firm foundation for understanding this wonderful breed.
Intelligently written, well-illustrated, well-organized, easy to navigate, with an index and bibliography.
I highly recommend it.
$8. 95 pp., Good binding and glossy paper.
- This book is very beneficial for any one that owns, wants to own,or simply is fancinated by Rhodesian Ridgebacks. They are great dogs, and this book is a great resource for the money.
- I was expecting this book to be more informative. More of a coffee-table book in style of information.

5 comments about Street Dogs.
- I treasure this book. It is beautiful and heartbreaking. Traer Scott courageously sticks her neck out to bring us haunting images and stories. Both this book and her book Shelter Dogs are money well spent.
- Street Dogs was an extremly touching book of photos of so many forgotten, hungry, yet vibrant puppies and dogs.
It is so sad to see these beautiful creatures struggling to survive.
Traer Scott has a real talent for capturing the heart and sole of one of these beautiful dogs just through their eyes. As in Shelter Dogs I found myself with a lump in my throat throughout the book.
A smart buy for anyone who claims to be or is a dog-lover.
- This book gives us an idea of how street dogs in Puerto Rico and Mexico live. Scott's unique perspective is amazing and sad all at the same time. Best thing about this book is that a portion of the proceeds is donated to the ASPCA; worth buying it just for that! Buy this book along with her book Shelter Dogs and be prepared to get teary eyed! Thank you.
- Like her previous book "Shelter Dogs", "Street Dogs" captures a whole range of dog emotions. She is a very talented photographer and apparently is not afraid to go the extra mile to get the photograph she wants.
- My sister is a "rescue" enthusiasts. This book was perfect for her. The photos were amazing. Keep up the good work.

1 comments about How to Train Your Golden Retriever (Tr-101).
- Easy to read book with lots of color pictures of goldens in every day life. Well organized. Helpful hints in blue boxes that catch your attention. Goldens are smart dogs who can easily think of things to do when bored; book has helpful information on counteracting this problem. Would recommend this book as a good first book for anyone interested in goldens.

5 comments about The Doberman Pinscher.
- Excellent content but the photos are not the best. Most photos are in black and white. The information though is top notch. Would recommend this book highly for all!!!!!
- Excellent book that gives a mostly objective overview of an amazing breed. Not the right book if your looking for a detailed training guide but can be helpful for someone researching their next pet.
- Good, thorough history of the development of the breed. Great pictures. Could have gone into more detail on temperament.
- This is a great book for any one who currently owns a doberman or is wanting to get a doberman. I highly recommend you read this book. It covers everything from training to proper diet to health care for the animal. It also gives you a nice history of the doberman, and the photos in the book are gorgeous. Yes I am a doberman lover and breeder, and after many years of searching for a good reference book I have found it, this is the one. It doesn't cover 100% everything, but it gives you a lot of pertinent and necessry information.
- I found that this book has lots of descriptive pictures and answers all questions that I had about the breed. The book elaborates on thorough history of the breed, standards and care, including the care of an elderly Doberman. This is a very helpful handbook about the Doberman breed.

5 comments about Choosing a Dog for Dummies.
- I just finished reading this book and buying my first puppy. This was my bible. I even had folded down pages and brought the book with me when I went to pick up my puppy at the breeder. This book was great because if you go on the AKC web site, they describe dogs by the qualities I didn't care about. They talk about fur markings, tail length, and things about being show quality. This book told me what I wanted to know about each breed like if it's good with kids, how much it sheds, and typical behaviors you can expect. It does that for many breeds including those considered rare. All the info was here about how to find a puppy, questions to ask when interviewing breeders, what all the health certifications mean, etc. It's told from the perspective of a person on the inside who is clearly knowledgeable about the dog world. It would be nice if more of the pictures were in color, as opposed to just the top 20 breeds, but you can't have everything and it would cost a lot more if it did. But overall, it's a great book for someone interested in getting a dog and wanting to know about all the different breeds.
- Like the easy to find requirements for each breed.
- This book is a Godsend for folks trying to decide which is the right breed of dog for them. Concise yet complete, and very readable. You sit down intending to glance through your new book, and end up reading it cover-to-cover (often laughing out loud). You now have a short list of possible breeds, and you know just what to do next, to find your dog. Great book for dog-hunters!
- This book is full of information on all kinds of different dog breeds. It tells you if the breed is good with kids, how much it sheds, what it is good at, and more.
- As a cat-owner looking for a dog, I needed help. I've only lived with cats during my lifetime (except the dog my parents had until I was 5). This book gives information about the different breeds of dogs, about finding a breeder or rescuing an animal, plus much much more. If you are looking into finding the type of dog that will fit into your household, I highly recommend this book. My husband also found it to be full of information, and he's been a dog-owner all of his life!

5 comments about Dog Is My Co-Pilot: Great Writers on the World's Oldest Friendship.
- If you love dogs, this is a must read. If you don't love dogs, you might by the end of this book. There are so many heartfelt stories. My favorite is the one about Bloodlines. Volunteering with the local animal shelter really makes you appreciate people who believe in the same things that you do.
- Most of the stories in this book "hit home" with me and I found myself saying "I've had that experience with my dog(s) - I could have written that". Some stories were a little long, just a few I found not as interesting. A good read for dog lovers.
- If you are a dog lover this should be required reading it is such a great book! It is a little treasure of great writing from some of the best writers ever....I wanted this book to last forever I enjoyed it so much!
- There's a lot in this book for dog owners--namely, 42 stories on some aspect of dog. Some of the information is factual, but most has to do with relationships--dog to person and dog to dog, the former being much more prevalent. Most any dog owner would gain something of value from this book.
I like the stories from Caroline Knapp, Alice Elliott Dark, and Bonnie Jo Campbell the best. Knapp's and Dark's stories are serious and compelling. Campbell's story about her dog Roscoe, who she comes to believe is a reincarnation of her former and erstwhile fiancé Oscar, is hilarious. The ties between the two are numerous. Even the dog's shortened ear (frostbite) is linked to Oscar's untimely and embarrassing demise.
My pick of three female authors should not be considered unusual in that most of the stories in this book are by females ("A dog is woman's best friend"). Most, also, are about medium- to large-sized dogs. Labs and herding dogs (blue heeler or cattle dog, Border collie, kelpie, and German shepherd) get the most ink.
If you're like me, meaning you often don't do what trainers recommend, you should find some comfort in instances where an owner didn't do what trainers recommend, and things turned out okay. Amusingly, one owner and her dog celebrated their graduation from training by going home and climbing onto the sofa, something the dog had been forbidden to do during the twelve-week training course. The story's message is two-fold: Loving your dog the way you wish is sometimes more important than rules. And since dogs are infinitely variable, what works with one may be useless or even counterproductive with the next.
Many of the owners in this book seem to have dogs who sleep with them religiously. My dogs never have. The closest I've come has been a miniature schnauzer, but even she had her limits and often baled sometime during the night. My current dog's routine, which matches that of the dog before her, is to stay with me until I stop reading and turn off the light. Then she's off to her familiar haunt--a fabric-covered chair near the front door (a nice arrangement, however, for the nights we forget to lock the front door). What these other owners have that I don't I can only wonder. Less body odor or perhaps--we're talking dog here--more?
(I'm giving the book five stars even though I found the formatting (justified, double-spaced text in two columns) at the start of each chapter irritating.)
- This is a book that is easy to carry with you and the stories are just the right length to read while waiting (for anything). I could relate to many of the stories.

5 comments about Turtles & Tortoises for Dummies.
- I never received this book. Sent an email to seller never received an answer. Bad, bad!!!! Very disappointed. Yes, it is paid for!
- Clear, easy-to-read, easy-to-follow information about turtles and tortises. I purchased this book after becoming a guardian to an Arizona desert tortise. These creatures are protected and found in small areas of Nevada, California and Arizona, and there is not much information about them to be found. This book had more useful information than I received from any other source.
- Given that this book is obviously aimed at the beginner it would make sense for the book to offer decent info for commonly available species; mud and musk turtles, painted turtles, cooters, sliders, maybe Russian and Greek tortises, salcuttas, and some others. However, it doesn't.
The book focuses an insane amount on the large, expensive (often over 1,000US), rare-in-captivity tortises like the Galapagos and aldabra tortise, which are exactly what the novice keeper wont' likely be buying. The common, affordable, and easier to keep turtles and tortises are given short shrift in this book. They may get a line or two, but that's about it. Furthermore, what information is given seems suspect; reccomended cage sizes tend to be on the small side, temps can be off, as can humidity. It's really not worth having--I threw my copy away.
- I purchased this book thinking (hoping) it would be the excellent source of information it is advertised to be; it is not.
I am very experienced in keeping all kinds of companion animals. As a rule, when I think I might want to add a new species to my household, I research the critter in question with great care. I purchased this book prior to getting my first tortoise. At the same time, I began researching my chosen species on the internet. Based upon what I have learned on the net and in speaking with tortoise keepers & breeders via e-mail/telephone and in person at "reptile expos", the information in this book is at best dated and over simplified and at worst may be dangerous to your pet. The kindest thing I can say about this book is that it is poorly organized. This alone makes it difficult to formulate an understanding of tortoise culture. Further, the author often contradicts herself, causing the reader to question whether they are misunderstanding the text as they go. Turtles and torts are highly specialized - they do not adapt to us as dogs or cats do. We MUST adapt to them and fulfill their very specific needs completely. Please research your chosen species very carefully before you purchase a turtle or tort! If you simply must buy this book, please do not use it as your only or best source of info.
- The author was very knowledgeable about her favorites: box turtles and (large) tortoises. That's all well and good, but... None of these turtles are suited for indoor keeping! I would expect that most prospective or current turtle keepers want or have smaller turtles, and it would have been nice to get more detailed info about them. If you can keep your chenolians in an outdoor habitat, BUY THIS BOOK. Otherwise, find another.
