1 comments about The Equus Illustrated Handbook of Equine Anatomy, Volume 1, The Musculoskeletal System: The Anatomy of Movement and Locomotion.

  1. The Equus Illustrated handbook on the anatomy of the horse was exactly what my 14-year-old granddaughter wanted for her birthday. She plans to be a veterinarian and is collecting books to read and study. It was so easy to find the book, order and have it shipped to her. It saved a trip to the bookstore and or the post office. Marvelously easy.

5 comments about Teaching Safe Horsemanship: A Guide to English and Western Instruction.

  1. This is the first book I read when I decided to begin giving lessons. The format is easy to read and the content is exactly what I was looking for. This book reminds you of all of the little things (especially safety related actions) that seasoned horse people know and perform out of habit but might forget to explain to a beginner. It also lines up about 16 lesson plans from ground safety up through canter lessons. It provides some school figures and exercises/stretches to enhance every lesson. If you are thinking about giving lessons, this book is a logical place to start and a must for your initial library.

  2. this book is a great book. i would highly reccommend it to anyone who has or is thinking about owning a horse/s. it gives the basics of riding from the ground up. even for the experienced rider/owner/trainer i think it is great, simply because it will remind you of the "little things" we tend to miss when teaching. i like that it is simple and easy to read, i would also recommend it to my students to read as well, since they may find something that i may have forgotten and it would give them the oppertunity to ask me questions - something everyone could learn from.

  3. There's no quick fix to teaching anyone to ride and this book can work for any age. Jan presented the same information throughout the book in varying detail to cater to the individual rider's experience and skill level. Even though some of the information might seem obvious, the idea of teaching a skill is to explain the obvious to someone who won't think it's obvious to them! It is great for those who care about their students and want the best and safest (safety issues discussed frequently) experience.

  4. A solid little book about riding instruction. The whole volume puts a lot of emphasis on being safe around horses (as indeed the title suggests), it stresses basic safety rules and then devotes an appendix section on dealing with accidents and lawsuits. One great feature of this book are the review questions at the end of each chapter. I appreciate equestrian texts with that type of feature.

  5. Jan Dawson provides great information on all aspects of a riding program. The sections on lesson plans, dealing with accidents and lawsuits, and safe school horses will be useful for both instructor and clientele in evaluating their current situation.

5 comments about What Is My Cat Thinking?: The Essential Guide to Understanding Pet Behavior.

  1. What a fun little book! As a cat fanatic, I appreciated reading behaviorist details about the furry little buggers. Ms. Bailey admits in the introduction that these are based soley on observation, but I feel that is as valid as anything else. She covers all the big areas of cat behavior, from hunting to human interaction. The set-up is wonderful, photograph-based with captions explaining what the cat is doing and why. Beautifully organized and easy-to-read. Great for all cat lovers.

  2. While much of the content of this book would be common sense to long-time cat owners, it's a great starting point for someone who hasn't had a feline in their life before. I really enjoyed the read and it's packed with really nice full-color photos. Best of all, the author doesn't overly anthropomorphise her subject but obviously loves cats as much as her audience.

  3. I'm glad there was information in this book I didn't know before. I'm glad I bought it.

  4. This was good if you want to have a basic understanding of what your cat's body movements mean and how they translate to how they are feeling. I recommend to read it with your children as there are many good pictures and it will better help them understand when to pet the cat and when to let it alone!

  5. I bought this after reading other reviews, but I was extremely disapponted in this book. The title is very misleading. I've had cats for years and wanted to learn more about their behavior and the differnt types of meows. This book does NOT do this. It's very basic and they write about behavior most children could figure out after being around their cat for a while. It mostly addresses cats behavior with other cats which an idiot can figure out without having to read about it. Not worth the money.

5 comments about All About Aussies: The Australian Shepherd From A To Z.

  1. This is the second book I've ordered for my father based on the reviews, and I have another winner! My Dad is tough to by for and I was again thrilled that he was so pleased. He has an Aussie and is delighted with the A-Z content on the breed. Thank you, reviewers, for all your honest imput. It's invaluable.

  2. This is the second book I have had. The first one was completely wore out. I am a breeder of Australian Shepherds and there is lots of information about the breed along with activites, health, and breeding. I highly recommend this book to anyone that wants to expand your knowledge on Australian Shepherds. I recommend this book to many customers that want to learn more about the breed. I tell them that if you want to buy one book then this is the book to get.

  3. I am very pleased with the book. The Hartnagle's have been active in the Australian Shepherd industry for generations. This book covers it all, from breeding to when to begin training.

  4. This book really does't leave anything out! Very good information. From obedience to advance herding and any type of medical (emergency or day to day) information you might ever need. Just doesn't have the current informatin on organizations. I would suggest getting "Australian Shepherds" along with the All About Aussies. Its a magazine from the popular dogs series. It has all the current information on oragizations and trends.

  5. This book was recommended highly, and I was not disappointed! The information coverage is all that I expected and more. So many dog books digress into information that applies to all dogs, but this one sticks to breed specifics.

There is only one thing I would improve in future editions: more photos in color. However, knowing that many of the historical photos were originally in black & white, I would not edit them out... the idea is merely to add more full-color recent photos, especially showing the full range of Aussie activities, trials, games, etc. One can never see too many beautiful Aussies!

5 comments about Shiba Inu (Kennel Club Dog Breed Series).

  1. This book has it all; breed history, characteristics, breed staandard, basic care, puppy care, health care, behavior training and showing in dog shows. The color pictures provide excellent detail and there are detailed drawings that provide additional helpful information. I would highly recommend this book to any person that plans to own a Shiba Inu or currently owns one.

  2. I knew nothing of the breed but this book covers allot and has some wonderful photos and info.

  3. This is one of the best books on Shiba Inus out there. It tells you everything you need to know about this amazing breed of dog. It's got everyting from health care, training and showing. It even tells you the shibas best fit for the AKC and Nippo. It's one of the best shiba inu books and no shiba owner should be without it.

  4. I got this book because we were adopting a Shiba Inu pup. We already have one Shiba & they are an interesting breed. I feel that the more knowledge about the breed that you can gain, the better the relationship will be for everyone. This book has a lot of in depth information that should help any potential Shiba Inu owner. It has lots of pictures to go with the topics.

  5. I'm a first time dog owner (and ended up getting a Shiba...ha ha!)
I thought this book was simple & an easy read. I've had my Shiba for 4 months now & still refer to the book for information!

2 comments about Doberman Pinschers (Complete Pet Owner's Manual).

  1. If you have or are planning on getting a Doberman puppy, this book should be required reading. It does not go too into depth on the subject of raising a Doberman as it is a subject that requires thousands of pages, but it does give you a great "first look" at raising a Doberman. If you have researched Dobermans excessively, this is not the book for you as it will not tell you anything new, but if you need a good introduction to caring for this noble breed it is a great read.

  2. Great guide for anyone thinking about sharing their life with this noble breed. Helped me to decide this dog is a breed I hope to live with soon.

5 comments about Not Left Behind: Rescuing the Pets of New Orleans.

  1. I wanted to have this book ever since I saw it: because I wouldve been there to help these people to help rescue all these animals if I could from day one.The photos in this book tell the story so well, its amazingly beautiful, tears have rolled down my eyes every time I watch these amazing pictures. Its the story of what unconditional love can acomplish when you let it happen. There are thousand of moving stories, the one of "dog in boat" was incredible, and the one of the big white dog that recovered that has her picture on the cover. But to me, my very favourite story of all, because I have a soft spot for Pit Bulls and the fact they are often extremely misunderstood by people, is the story of the Pit Bull couple who where together on top of a car hood, and when they spotted the little boat with the people, the male jumped into the water and started swimming towards them. That is my very favourite photo+special story.I vividly recommend this book to everyone, its a jewel!

  2. This is one of the animal books that has touched my heart deeply. Imagine being a pet, dependent on your owner for basic survival, and then suddenly having no one there to protect, feed, care and nurture you. Imagine this going on for days, with no end in sight. That's what these animals went through. Many of these owners didn't realize how Hurricane Katrina would tear into their lives taking everything away from them including their precious pets. Happily, many of these animals were reunited with their owners again, and for those that weren't, "Best Friends" took care of them. However, these animals were desperate.

Whenever I read about the 2 pit bulls trapped on the rooftop of a submerged car my eyes tear up. Who knows how long these 2 dogs were trapped on that roof, but when the one dog spotted the rescuers--who were in a rowboat due to the flooded streets--he was so desperate by then that he jumped into the water and swam the distance to the boat...which was quite a ways from his rooftop... he swam up to the boat, looked into the eyes of the photographer and just begged to be plucked out of the water, rescued and loved. He didn't even wait for them to get to him, he swam across the water just to get to them. I tear up everytime I think about that pitbull's desperation and feeling of abandonment.

Anyway, read the book. And I have to say that Best Friends is one of best organizations I've ever heard of. They do so much on behalf of animals and they are just a wonderful, wonderful organization. Buy the book and visit www.bestfriends.org! It can be a great coffee table book too.

  3. Troy Snow and the Best Friends Animal Society, Not Left Behind: Rescuing the Pets of New Orleans (Yorkville Press, 2006)

After Katrina hit, thousands upon thousands were forced to flee New Orleans and leave their pets behind. (The prevailing attitude of "we'll only be gone a few days, we'll leave a big bowl of food and some extra water" is reiterated here.) As the military worked on trying to get the city back into habitable condition and rescue any surviving people in the city, the best Friends Animal Society went to work trying to rescue the pets. Troy Snow, the group's photographer, documented the weeks they spent outside New Orleans, boating into the city every day to rescue animals that had been trapped by the flood. These are not happy fluffy bunny animal pictures, folks. If you prefer to think of your pooches as gamboling in the breeze, you might want to avoid this one. But Snow's pictures capture the dogged (pardon the pun) determination and will to live of the animals, and are a fitting tribute to their ability to survive. ****

  4. Having worked at the sanctuary in Tylertown, MS where many of these animals were taken after the rescues documented in these extraordinary photographs, this book helps one vividly see what so many of these animals went through after the hurricane and before they arrived at our base camp. More can be said by these photos that captured how these beasts survived the days, weeks and sometimes months after Hurricane Katrina, than any written text can state.

I was also pleased to see that one of the dogs we cared for in the Back 40 in Tylertown whom we named "Piglet" turned out to be the covergirl on this book! She was always so happy to see us when we'd approach her kennel and loved to have suntan lotion rubbed all over her belly -- it is really something to see her story in detail before she came to us at Tylertown. The happy ending is that she was adopted by a family and now has a very happy forever home. :)

  5. Memories of when people come together to help those in need, no matter how many legs they have. It's great to see the results of human compassion.

5 comments about Rabbit Handbook, The (Barron's Pet Handbooks).

  1. This book was written by a veterinarian and is recommended by my veterinarian. It offers great guidelines for medical care and makes medical conditions easy to understand which helps me work better with my veterinarian. In addition, there is valuable information on behavior, training, diet and housing.

  2. I thought this book was great. I read all about the rabbit diseases, so when this book said that a certain symptom was normal I ignored. Now my rabbit is dead, and I know to go to my vet. Good as a starter book, but only that.

  3. I bought this book before I adopted my first rabbit, just to make sure that I could handle whatever responsibilities come along with having a pet rabbit. The book gives you advice on which breed is best for you, what to expect as your bunny grows, what to feed, what not to feed, recommended toys, behavior interpretations, common rabbit diseases, symptoms and treatments. I still refer to it whenever I have any concerns. Nothing will substitute a vet visit when your bunny is sick, but you can at least have an idea when a vet visit is necessary. I also refer to this book as my bible. The information is concise and easy to understand, and also easy to find, as the book is very well organized. The only suggestion I would make is to inclue a picture of a Flemish Giant, because that is fast becoming a very popular pet breed. Other than that, the book is perfect.

  5. I received this book a few days ago and have basically read it from cover to cover.
I feel the information in this book is for the most part accurate. One thing that I think should be added into all companion animal informative books (whether it be a book such as this, made for the average pet owner, or a book as a tutorial for beginning breeders) is more information on reasons to NOT breed your pet. The overpopulation of companion animals in this country is outstanding. By educating the uneducated regarding breeding this problem can be brought under control. I was happy to see that it was mentioned to not breed your pet, however I think a more in depth discussion of it should have been added.
I thought the feeding guidelines were a little off as well, but I have seen much worse.

4 stars to Karen Gendron and Michele Earle-Bridges for a great book!

5 comments about The Best Dog in the World: Vintage Portraits of Children and Their Dogs.

  1. I am so happy that I purchased this book! As a mother of 4 young children (and one 12 year old golden retriever!) I was very excited to read it! The pictures are beautiful and the writing is phenominal. It captures the timeless love that children give to the world and their dogs. Our family will treasure this book forever!

  2. I received this book as a gift from a fellow dog lover and have been pouring over it ever since. This is the kind of book that I keep out on my coffee table and browse through it over a cup of tea. i love all of authentic photos and appreciate how much the author has put into researching the content. This book is not only about the bond between humans and their dogs but also about life at the turn of the century. "The Best Dog in the World" is not only beautifully done, but it's interesting, informative, and just fun to look at! This would be a simple, timeless gift for any dog lover or someone who loves all things vintage.

  3. Of course we all believe that we have the single best dog in the world, but as the images in this wonderful book show, there have been and will always be children (and adults) who believe that their dog is truly the best. You can't help but get drawn into the lives of the children who are photographed a century and a half ago in beautiful sepia images with their beloved pet. Though I do not consider myself a true "dog person" I have the deepest affection for the dog I spent my childhood with and indeed was photographed with her in much the same fashion, although in color. This book brought back those memories of childhood and having a true best four-legged friend rushing back to me. I picked up off of the shelf and could not put it down.

  4. What a great little book. I loved the photography and the history. Wonderful book for dog lovers and history lovers.

  5. Ms. Long's daughter is in my class and so I got the oppurtunity to look at the book at length. The photographs are smile-inducing and original. Who can resist photographs of children with their dogs? But before you think its all about cute overload, let me say that the most interesting aspect of the book is actually the well researched text. It goes into the delination of breeds and their uses without being overly verbose or scientific. A lot of the photographs have inscriptions on the back and those long forgotten letters are included. This is the true selling point of the book because it give you insight into the lives of these people and the their lives with their loved ones (both human and animal). A worthy buy for not only dog lovers but lovers of social history.

5 comments about You Bake 'em Dog Biscuits Cookbook.

  1. I looked at several other cookbooks before I choose this one. The book gives you low fat and grain/chicken free recipes. Plus, a lot of really useful general dog information. Try the liver leather recipe. All the dogs go crazy for it, and it is perfect if you want to use treats during training.

  2. I bought a copy of this book several months ago and have already made many of the recipes not only for my Cairn Terrier, but as gifts for other dogs and it is a hit! The recipes are easy to make, don't take a lot of ingredients and you can subsitute ingredients and experiment to fit your dogs tastes and needs. I have also given two copies as gifts. Try making your dog some treats - it's fun!

  3. I just got a puppy and have been very concerned about what goes into his food and treats, so I decided that I want to try making my own (not to mention that this makes for great gifts to give). When I went to the store to find books on this type of thing, it is surprising that not many books are just about biscuits. I love my dog, but I find it a little ludacris that many doggie biscuit books actually have real meals for dogs in them (Labradore Lasagnia, Pup's Pizza, meatloaf, even Arroz con Pollo)... I'm truly serious! If you make meals for your dog, I appologize and do not mean to affend, but I barely have time to make my own meals, let alone something for my dog. Baking biscuits is one thing... but actual meals each night is another.

This book was right to the point and had everything I desired in it... buscuits, treats, and even cupcakes for when he does have a special celebration. The recipes are easy to follow and the ingredients seem easy to find. I think this book is a real treat and paired with the right cookie cutters makes a great gift (see also their set that comes with cutters). I got the book as opposed to the set because I also got "Make Your Own Healthy Doggie Biscuits" by Jonna Anne that came with 3 cutters (also an excellent book and set). I may also get the You Bake 'em Dog Biscuit mini set so that I have a smaller bone. I thought this book hit the target and I love it!

  4. This book has silly graphics as somebody else had mentioned, but I don't care about that. It's kind of cute actually. The recipes are straight forward and there are tips for storing the treats. The book even has recommendations for throwing a dog party. I'm anxious to make the pumpkin muffins for my guy and his dog buddies.

  5. enjoyed this book. Good info, easy to read and use. Has a lovely selection and variety of recipes.Thoroughly recommend it.
