5 comments about Why Cats Paint: A Theory of Feline Aesthetics.

  1. I had only seen the original edition of this book which is a full sized binding suitable for coffee table display. I was disappointed at what arrived, this pocket-sized version. Much of the best material has been edited out and of course the photos are now bite-sized. If you can, look for the original publication which is much more funny and looks like an actual non-fiction publication. The tiny version looks like a cute gag - which is what it has been reduced to.

  2. My husband and I are cat people and were thrilled when we received this interesting book as a gift. At first, we were amazed as we looked over the cat's paintings and read about the "artists" histories. However, as we paid more attention to the fine details in the book (i.e. the index and footnotes, etc.), we realized that this book is purely tongue-in-cheek. For example, on the page with the cat mummies, check out the "Egyptian" names listed. One is something like "Fakt Kat." Get it? Faked cat. My husband and I also went and checked out some of the books listed in the bibliography and surprise, none exist. Go through the book and there are other examples, proving that it's meant to be a humorous read.

That said, we enjoyed this book immensely and found it to be pure genuis -- but not for the reasons we initially thought. I highly recommend it.

  3. This is a wonderful book, with very nice photos. The art world jargon is very believable. The cats are presented the way typically artists are shown and described by the art establishment.Abstract expressionsim is covered mostly, also you will have examples of installation art. Deliciuos and heart warming!I trully recommend this book, if you are an aillurophile yourself, or want it as a gift for a cat person, or an artist.

  4. Several theories of feline art have been put forward over the years, and this volume may serve as an excellent introduction to the uninitiated. Influential feline artists are discussed and their work reprinted in glorious detail. There is, however, a strong bias towards the mainstream of cat art. Important, indeed vital, underground movements are completely ignored. The street art of alley cats is sadly overlooked, perhaps reflecting the authors deference to the curators of that ivory tower, the Museum of Non Primate Art.
Also lacking is any serious discussion of Queer Theory, so vital in the deconstruction of any mammalian artistic representations.
Yet in spite of these flaws, Why Cats Paint remains an important and influential volume that no connaisseur of feline aesthetics can afford to ignore.

  5. I thought this was a joke at first, but it does look like the evidence is there to suggest the pussies have a sense of aesthetics. These paintings are certainly more than merely territorial markings. I've had several cats myself but never had a cat who made any attempt to paint or create other forms of art. However, that doesn't necessarily mean it isn't possible. Just as some humans are artists, perhaps some cats are inclined that way too? It makes me wonder if there might be cat musicians and cat writers.

5 comments about Puggles (Complete Pet Owner's Manual).

  1. This book I found was very useful. We bought a Puggle back in June. And I still wondered so many things about her. This book, started with the history to each subject that you could run into. It has helped me in so many ways. I would suggest this book to all

  2. I did not even know I had a Puggle until a neighbor said what a nice Puggle! This book is great and has a lot of good pictures.

  3. I never got this product. they sent me an email later saying it was out of stock. so that was pretty much it.

  4. This book was great advice and training information on the new "puggle" breed! I had been reading books on both the Pug and the Beagle to learn about our new family addition (Bella). It's great to have a book that speaks directly to the breed (Puggle).

  5. I think this book is invaluable for Puggle owners. I learned so much!! Really invaluable!

5 comments about Help Your Dog Fight Cancer: An Overview Of Home Care Options.

  1. This book arms you with the information you need to know in order to be able to help your dog fight cancer. It tells you what to expect, so that you're not caught unaware about things that can and do happen to your dog with cancer.
    A Must!

  2. When my Siberian Husky got leukemia, I did not know what to do. Do we treat it? Is it the right thing to do? Will my dog suffer? Money was not an issue, I just wanted to do what was best for my dog. This book answered my questions and helped put my mind at ease, and we went on to treat my dog for her cancer. She lived another year and a half to age 13 (she died from an unrelated illness). She had a high quality of life, even while being treated for her cancer (her treatment was primarily oral chemo - yes, just pills! I put them in Pill Pockets and she thought she was getting extra treats!!), up until the last couple of weeks. I am indebted to Laurie - thank you for writing this book and giving us more time with our beloved Sheena. Her efforts in this book and The Magic Bullet Fund are nothing short of extraordinary. If your dog is diagnosed with cancer and you want to learn more, this book will help you become a more educated doggie parent.

  3. This book is full of insight, information and the love of a wonderful dog. It is written by the dog owner, who in not a vet. Therefore, the information comes from opinions and research of many professionals and trial and error of the owner/author. It was very helpful for us.

  4. after reading the book, I found it to be very informative and am hoping things work out for anyone who has a dog with this disease.

  5. A friend loaned me her copy of this book when my sister's dog was diagnosed with cancer. Now that I've read it, I'm buying my own copy to have as a ready reference. This book will not tell you how to treat your own dog; it will help you devise a plan which is appropriate for your own dog and your own personal situation. The author reviews all of the things you need to consider, and shares her own decision making process by telling Bullet's story. It's a good story, one you'll want to finish. Even if your dog is healthy, buy this book, read it now, and you'll be prepared if your dog, or a friend's dog is diagnosed with cancer.

5 comments about The Complete Standard Poodle.

  1. The book came on time. It was a delight to read and very informative. I especially devoured the chapters on Puppy Care, Understanding Your Poodle, and The Versatile Standard Poodle.I read it from cover to cover in two days. Discovered that a local breeder, whom I had contacted about a puppy, had a champion dog of her's pictured in the book on page 159!

  2. Gorgeous book! Beautiful color pictures on almost every page. 20 pages dedicated to grooming including a variety of hair styles and all major topics are covered such as health and training. Of all the poodle books I've purchased this is by far my favorite.

  3. This book is full of wonderful pictures and a complete history of the standard poodle. However, the author is a former show judge in the UK and spends a considerable amount of the book discussing British standards for show. The recommended diet (raw human food) is contrary to what most American vets prescibe. The information on grooming the standard poodle is quite informative and includes pictures of finished cuts. However, it does not include enough information for a novice like me to attempt the trims.

  4. Eileen Geeson does a fabulous job of giving background information pertinent to standard poodle owners. She touches on a broad range of topics, from our emotional attachments to our furkids to puppy-raising information and everything in between. One of the most helpful sections gives warning signs of injuries and diseases prone to standard poodles. The pictures in the book are precious, and Geeson's book is a fluent read.

  5. What a wonderful book! I bought my first Poodle and this book was a treasure!

5 comments about Shiba Inus (Complete Pet Owner's Manual).

  1. Really lovely book, easy to read, looks of interesting points, made up my husbands mind to buy a Shiba

  2. Good, book but short/small. If you really want to learn about Shiba's I would get something a little more extensive. But, it did the job.

  3. This book was great for learning about specific care needs of the Shiba, personality traits of the Shiba, and breeding and showing your Shiba.

  4. Concise but packed with breed-specific information. Very very helpful as I start educating myself more on this wonderful breed!

  5. A basic book. Gives you a bottom line what the Dog is. A good help if you decide to get one and have no idea what they are like. This dog has alot of pluses. They are a great breed but not for everyone. What dog is?

5 comments about Eclectus Parrots.

  1. I bought this book before getting my eclectus parrot and I found it to cover everything I can think of I could possibly want to know. Shows pictures of Eclectuses displaying different body languages and their explanations. Covers diets, differences between sub-species,covering a cage or not to cover and much more. Lots of pictures too.

  2. Very using useful guide to help you take care of your eclectus bird. Nice pictures. Easy read. Sound advices.

  3. This is a concise and helpful guide for all those who reside with an Eclectus parrot or hope to do so soon. Eclectus are unique in important ways other than being sexually dimorphic (males and females look different). They also do not do well on seed or pellet diets fed to many parrots. The book covers care of your bird, how to provide necessary intellectual stimulation with safe toys, information about common health problems and lots of other information critical to the well-being of your feathered friend.

  4. I just received my copy of the book from the mail. My first impression was that it was quite thin. I was hoping for more information about breeding and aviary design, but the sections dealing with those topics were quite short. I was hoping to find a section wherein hybrids were thoroughly discussed and if a hybrid bird would have any deformities later on or if they would lead to infertile offspring.

Also, I was hoping to find more detailed analysis, and photographic documentation (probably pictures of different races perching side by side for comparison) of the different races.

Anyway, except for the above-mentioned items, I found the book quite useful specially for beginners like myself.

  5. I received this book when I purchased my Eclectus and I am glad it was given to me. It is rather informative and to the point and is easy for a new parrot parent to find information. It has rescued me on many occassions. The only thing I wish it had was a more detailed section on illness and symptoms to watch for. Otherwise , I would hightly recommend this book for anyone considering getting one of these parrots.

5 comments about After You Get Your Puppy.

  1. This is the best book I have ever found for the new puppy owner. It is a must have for anyone who wants to "do right" by his/her new addition!

  2. I am on the verge of getting a puppy, so all this is in theory as of right now, but the book was very informative. The author delivered the information in a easy to read format The socialization and bite inhibition sections were particularly useful. After reading this book I feel like I am better prepared to be a new dog owner.

  3. This is a book I read cover to cover and took many reference notes. It deals with understanding the new puppy and preparing him for socialization with people, vets and other pets. With the skills taught in the book, the puppy can grow into a well-trained adolescent and into a well-mannered adult.

  4. I bought this book because it was referenced on the Dog Scouts of America website, which is a site dedicated to developing positive relationships between owner/dog. I was so disappointed when I received the book, from the moment I got a good look at it's cover and read the subtitle ("...The Clock Is Ticking!"), which I had missed when ordering the book, or I would have thought twice about buying it... This book turned having a delightful puppy into a race against time to prevent having an evil, rotten dog. It took all the fun and optimism out of raising my puppy. I'm glad I stopped reading it, and looked to more upbeat sources for advice on raising my puppy. Many of these sources I found on the internet. I looked to Karen Pryor and her clicker training theories, as well as such books as "Boxers for Dummies" and "The Boxer Handbook" and "I Just Got A Puppy What Do I Do." All these emphasize the power of bonding with your dog, the pleasures of socializing your puppy, and while they don't downplay the significance of socialization, etc. they don't turn the cute puppy you have just made a part of your family into some ticking timebomb set to go off and bring nothing but pain and misery if not socialized absolutely correctly. I grew up with dogs, in a time before "socialization," in a time where you just loved your puppy, and took him places, and tried your best with him/her, and those dogs all turned out fine. I am grateful for all the information that we have these days on how to better raise a puppy to be a happy well adjusted pet, and am doing my best to put that information to good use on my own Boxer puppy.

  5. This book was very helpful with my new German Shepherd puppy, evn though I already have 3 other dogs, it's nice to read new/different styles and ideas for giving your BIG dog the right start.

5 comments about Puppy Raising & Training Diary for Dummies.

  1. This is a great book for any new pet owner. I am looking forward to reading this in a year and seeing all of the progress we have made!

  2. This is a valuable tool for raising a pup. It is concise and written in laymen's terms so it's very easy to understand. It's straight forward and to the point. You don't have to weed through a ton of useless information. I'd highly recommend this book for anyone wanting great meaningful tips and techniques on puppy raising. It's made a world of difference for me.

  3. As a first time puppy owner I was at a loss in every area, I reviewed many books and chose this one with my fingers crossed, I was not wrong and I go to this book everytime I have a question that needs an answer. I am thrilled with the all the puppy has learned and much has been in the book. I recommend the book for all new puppy parents.

  4. The book for dummies helped with getting started with my new puppy. She is a hyper dog so I was still lost with what to do when she did not react the way she was supposed to according to the book.

  5. I loved this book.It helped a lot.It talked about all
different kinds of things.Like what to do if your dog
or puppy barks at everything. How to clean a puppy's ears
and why.How to stop them from biting. How to recognize
    your pup's personality.Ssomething I learned is that
there are different ways a pup can act like. Some
pups are eager Beavers. That means that they will
do anything to make you happy. That can be a good
thing and a Bad thing. If you like to toss the ball, your
pup will bring it back 500 times!I don't want to say
    anymore.Buy this book it's great!
