5 comments about Your Lab's Life: Your Complete Guide to Raising Your Pet from Puppy to Companion (Your Pet's Life).
- Gives you a great insight into this wonderful breed and excellent hints at both home, obedience and field training!
- Here is an attractive entry by author Virginia Parker Guidry, abook that takes a loving look at America's singular and by far most popular wonder dog, the Labrador Retriever. As Berger points out so well, there are few other animals who draw such love from humans as a dog, and surely the Lab is the most loveable of the breeds. Here she presents the Labrador Retriever in all its wonder and does a yeoman service to the rest of us by enumerating all of the superb qualities the dog has to offer potential human enthusiasts. They are by reputation excellent working dogs, both as field dogs and as guide dogs for the disabled. They are also incredibly loyal, and the news services are often filled with wonderful and heartwarming stories of Labs crawling out on the ice to save their masters, often at considerable danger to themselves. Nonetheless, they stand by our sides.
Therefore, this book, "Your Lab's Life", is the ultimate tribute to the breed, and is chock-full with stories and photos that actively serve to substantiate what might otherwise seem as idle boasts and overethusiastic praise. In fact, for anyone who spends any time around Labs, like me, it is hard nto to use superlatives when describing them. More than one of the stories herein will bring a smile to your face, a tear to your eye, and the idea in your noggin perhaps it is time to consider getting one of these incredible creatures into you rlife, and that of your extended family. they boost the energy level in any room they enter, are incredible chick-magnets, and have been shown to reduce high blood pressure and dissipate depression through their mere presence. This is a wonderful book about what I believe to be the world's most nearly perfect living creature, the Labrador Retriever! Enjoy!
- My lab is recently acquired and is 4 years old and is a family pet. I found the book to be very informative in caring and for training. The book covers just about anything you would want to know and would work for puppies also.
- It was a good book to read, but it had NOTHING on training a lab how to retrieve. It gave a few instructions on basic dog commands, but I found similar tips in many other books. If you are looking for a guide to training your lab, this isn't for you.
- I ordered this book based on all the reviews thinking that this was the one and only Lab book needed.... I have 2 PureBreed Labs and in speaking both with my Vet and other breeders thought I may have a litter. This book does not support the idea of breeding or yet the reproductive aspects of the Lab at all. If someone plans to own a Lab just for a pet and doesn't intend to ever think of it's reproductive health or need that information then yes..... this is a SUPER book! I agree with the author's advice about neutering and spaying to keep the population down, however feel for this to be called the only book you'll ever need... I disagree. Look else where for the reproductive information on your beloved pet! The format and layout of the book as well as the reading material is better than most books I've read. I will now be looking for yet more books on breeding.

5 comments about The Pill Book Guide to Medication for Your Dog and Cat.
- This book has been nothing but helpful to me. Considering I am a devoted cat slave and regularly take my kitties to the vet this book has helped me immensely on everything (so far) that has been prescribed for my little fur babies. This book is a must for any animal lover
- This is a very good and handy reference. However, the author should consider to put all medicine's brand name, scientific name to the index. Otherwise, it is difficult for a layman like me to check.
- I was disappointed because the book was described as brand new and arrived with a torn cover.Other than this it was what I ordered.
- I've had this book for a couple of years and it has truly saved the day!! I find it most useful for OTC medications for my pets. Sometime the vet is not available and I don't want my pets to be uncomfortable while waiting for the doctor. So, I give them OTC meds and know that I have not given them a thing that can harm them. Also, dosage being so important, I am assured that they are not being overmedicated (which can make them worse or even kill them.) I have such faith in this publication that I sent one to several relatives and friends for their animals safety. Doesn't get a much better recommendation than that!!
- Up to date and informative. Being a rescuer I see my fair share of the Vet's office. New medications always get a once over to check for signs of allergic reactions. This book is a great source. It also helped once when a friend's dog snatched a pill. While waiting for Animal Poison Control I was able to let her know the dog was not in trouble. Every rescuer, breeder and exhibitor should have a copy. The average owner may not need it unless they make a lot of vet visits for medications.

5 comments about The Book of Miniature Horses: Buying, Breeding, Training, Showing, and Enjoying.
- This book is very good for beginners in the miniature horse world. It covers a wide range of topics and provides plenty of information. I would recommend this book.
- I got this book when I was first getting into minis, though Ive had big horses for a long time. There really wasnt much info in here specific to minis, aside from a short breed history, and a few pictures. It seemed to be more a general horse care book, which I already have plenty of! I would not suggest this book if your looking for info specific to minis, but its okay if your new to horses of any size and need to learn general info.
- This miniature horse book has all the info anyone would need. It tells you everything step by step. I knew nothing before I read it and now I feel as though I might know everything about a mini.
- This is a great book to purchase if you are looking at an overview of American Miniature Horses and what is involved with their care, upkeep and what one can do with these unique equines from keeping them as pets to having them as show animals.
It covers all topics with sound advice and handles even "sensitive" topics in the field with care without bias.
I have owned, bred and shown American Miniature Horses (AMHA and AMHR) since 1992 and have been involved with horses of various breeds for 37 years.
- I bought the book hoping to gain some additional insight into the world of showing & breeding mini horses. If you have been around the show ring at all and have some showing experience - especially in hand, then this is not the book for you. Clipping a bridle path is the same regardless of size of horse. It is this type of elementary subject material discussed in the book. As for breeding, the author recommends live cover as AI for mini's is almost non-existent. I believe you could gain more knowledge from the miniature horse registry than from this book.
If you have absolutely no experience around horses - then this book may be a great first read as the principles for care are the same for minis as it is the regular size horse.

5 comments about The Professional Pet Sitter: Your Guide to Starting and Operating a Successful Service Edition 2005 Newly-Revised Includes Business Forms.
- This book is way too expensive for what you get. Most of the forms you can find on the internet. They go into great detail about office procedures and paper work which is good, but that was most of the book. If your looking for in dept pet sitting advice I would buy "Pet Sitting for Profit", it's actually a much better book.
- I thought this book was just average. It is very over priced for what the book actually has to offer.
- this book is very informative. it's a must-have for new enterperneurs interested in this field. i highly recommend it.
- When I first started thinking about starting my business in the early-mid 90's I picked up this book and devoured it. Then, it sat on my shelf as I pursued my 'corporate ladder' and took care of pets part-time.
When I decided to open my business full-time I again referred to the book. It really kept me inspired and ready to move forward. However, I did find that many of the suggestions were somewhat outdated -- using paper to track clients and schedules was never part of my plan -- but the basics of what they recommend you track/keep were great -- and I adapted the info to my on-line database. Since then, I've switched to a third-party service for an on-line database for client info, but the info I learned from the Mangolds' book was great.
I did read this book before Patti Moran's and tend to refer to it as the original 'bible' in my mind. But both books cover the same territory and give you a good overview of wht to expect. Petsitters are generally GREAT with pets and like the idea of spending time with them, but often have a hard time with the business side...this book is a great guide and reminder that you are in it to make money.;
As my business grew (http://www.peggiespets.com), I started helping other pet-sitters start or enhance their own businesses, ([...]) and this is a book that I include on my reading list for clients.
It's a good book that should be part of your learning library to continue to provide outstanding service to pets and their people!

- When I took early retirement after 25 years in the Banking industry and began a career in pet sitting, I found a treasure in "The Professional Pet Sitter." It is a gem not only in the useful information it contains, but also in the caring philosophy conveyed by its authors, Lori and Scott Mangold. Whether you are considering pet sitting as a full-time or part-time venture, this book is valuable. With time being a precious commodity in today's fast-paced world, I found that "The Professional Pet Sitter" provided clear-cut, easy-to-locate details on how to establish a successful service. As a further boon to launching a pet sitting career quickly and effectively, all appropriate business forms are included in the book. Thanks to the Mangolds' encouragement and expertise embodied in "The Professional Pet Sitter," my business is now in its sixth year and flourishing.

5 comments about Jack Russell Terrier Handbook, The (Barron's Pet Handbooks).
- I bought this book for my husband who is a recent member of the JRTC and is planning on raising Jack Russel show dogs. He loved it! Thanks!
- The Jack Russell Terrier Handbook is like no other book available for the breed. The emphasis is on providing the most in-depth and up-to-date informaton about subjects vital to caring for and living with a JRT, including behavior problems and training, medicine and hereditary health problems, nutrition, genetics, and breeding. Information on fun stuff to do with your terrier, such as training for earthdog competitions or even going hunting, is also included, as are tamer diversions such as agility, racing, and conformation. This is not a book of pedigrees and show-win photos, but a book for people who enjoy the JRT in every facet of its being. Intersperced in the text are lots of color photos of JRTs in action, and tidbits of technical information (Terrier Tech) and facts (Jack Fact). A book for people who want to excel at JRT ownership.

- Great book!
I have read quite a few Jack Russell books and this is very informative and very well written I would recommend this book highly, especially to someone interested in Jack Russells it explains a lot about the breed, showing, feeding, training and just understanding these special dogs. It's a must read!
- Very good book. informative. I bought a Jack and the book at the same time and the book saved me a lot of headaches. A must have for the jack russell owner, or anyone thinking about getting a Jack. Thanks

5 comments about Labrador Retrievers (Complete Pet Owner's Manual).
- Short thin little book wasn't worth the money. I didn't learn anything new and the pictures were not very great either. I received the book, read through it cover to cover in 10-15 minutes, placed it on the shelf and it's been there ever since.
- the chapter 'at home with your labrador' really helps with people that are going to get a lab. It tells you everything from the first day you get it to what needs there are.
- Having only had Basset Hounds for the past 30 years, the addition of a Lab puppy has been great for our household. Since we didn't have experience with these puppies, however, we needed help. This little book has been very useful. I'd rcommend it to any Lab owner.
- One of the aspects of this book that drew me in was its premise that the Labrador Retriever is perhaps the single most agreeable and people-oriented of all the domesticated breeds, the author shows the reader how and why to care for God's most perfect earthly creature, the Labrador Retriever! By showing us the degree to which the breed represents a witch's brew of intelligence, honesty and loyalty to its human companions, the author illustrates why the Labrador has become the single most popular breed of dog in the world today. Labradors are sturdy creatures indeed, bred for sporting use along the quicksilver shores of Newfoundland, where the water temperatures and sea conditions require a healthy dollop of strength and endurance, and those are qualities these dogs have in spades.
For any of us that have seen them at work or play in the fields and in the water, their unique combination of physical attributes and obvious intelligence makes them the ideal human companion. I should know; I live with four of them! The proof of their adaptability to almost any condition and their loyalty, intelligence, and unparalleled work ethic is demonstrated by the wide use of them as guide dogs and as adjunct partners for the physically handicapped. Stories of Labradors crawling out onto the ice to save their masters are legendary, as are the tales of them rescuing children from fires or from underneath rubble. Never has there been a dog superior to them. The author has recruited a wide variety of experts to testify as to the qualities and abilities of the dog, and one walks away from a reading of the book much better informed as to the all of the many qualities and capabilities of the breed, which seems to represent an astonishing list of useful and worthwhile attributes. We also get quite critical information as to what to look for when choosing a lab, and how to analyze the quality of the puppy you see before you. The author offers a compendium of information regarding genetics, feeding, health care, and inherited dispositions, as well as some sage advice as to how to ensure your puppy becomes the grown up Labrador companion you will come to view as another family member. This is a great book, and one I heartily recommend! Enjoy!
- To the person who gave the 2 star review. C'mon, what are you thinking...this is a $10-$15 book, and you are expecting it to go into fine details about the breed.
I'll tell everybody this...this is an excellent book, and it does go into details about the breed. I'm sure you can go buy a $50 book that goes into more detail, but you get the most bang for your buck with this book. It is highly informative, and I would recommend it to novice/experienced dog owners. I guarantee you'll love this book!!!

2 comments about Horsekeeping Almanac: The Essential Month-by-Month Guide for Everyone Who Keeps or Cares for Horses.
- This is a great armchair/tackroom reference full of tips and information on caring for horses. It is a real help in getting organized. A 'must' for the new horse owner or someone getting back into horsekeeping. It's also a fun, interesting, and easy read for those in-between times while waiting for the coffee to perk or just taking a break. The information is timeless.
- In my opinion, this is the best new horse reference on the market, and of special value to new owners, regardless of whether their horses are 16 hands or 30 inches. The author's unique approach to caring for our horses year-round is so logical, one wonders why it wasn't written earlier!
A wealth of information is offered in easy-on-the-eyes layout and color scheme, with charming illustrations throughout. The book is organized by season for temperate climate regions, with additional suggestions for adjusting the information for other climate conditions. An innovative "five-season" plan covers Late Winter (January-February), Spring (March-April-May), Summer (June-July-August), Fall (September-October), and Early Winter (November-December).
Everything and anything a horse owner needs to know or do is included. Upcoming January, for instance, gives information and details about the following: performing a late winter visual examination of your horse; horses and weather; setting up records for the coming year; checking feet and preparing for the farrier; cold weather feeding rules and suggestions; calculating your horse's weight; dealing with winter predators; parasite control; care of teeth; winter grooming; pasture & fence maintenance; sanitation and manure management; tractor maintenance; tack inspection and care; income tax overview; and, preparing for foaling season.
Who guessed so much needed to be done in January?
Scattered throughout these 576 information-packed pages are tidbits about wildlife, horse movies, ranch recipes, language trivia, and historical horsekeeping. The author includes sidebars with tips for living comfortably with horses. "Horse Sense and Safety" includes recommendations for moving around horses: "Either walk around a horse well out of kicking range or move around the horse by staying close, with your hand on his hindquarters to let him know you are there. Never walk under or step over the tie rope." The book has a full index, website resources for horse owners, and a list of recommended reading.
If I still owned horses, this book would be my constant companion!

5 comments about The Emotional Lives of Animals: A Leading Scientist Explores Animal Joy, Sorrow, and Empathy - and Why They Matter.
- Animals and emotions. It's a touchy subject. Most people can readily admit that most animals have primary (fight or flight) type reactions. However, opinions begin to change when researchers start discussing secondary emotions, like love, compassion, sadness, etc.
Anyone who has ever had a pet knows for a fact that their cat, dog, snake, etc has such emotions. We know for a fact that they have very distinct personalities and preferences. Yet, somehow the same people, find it difficult to believe that a chimpanzee, an elephant, a wolf, a magpie, or a fish might also be capable of something beyond primitive reactions.
The Emotional Lives of Animals gives accounts of animals displaying what would seem to be primary emotions. As one would expect, the author discusses big brained animals such as elephants, higher primates, whales, and dolphins. However, the most interesting studies look at unexpected animals such as fish to examine their capabilities.
- The book has some very good points. However, the author repeats his ideas many times. I got about halfway through the first chapter and lost interest. I think the book could have been condensed, considerably.
- I am founder of an animal rescue group in Pinehurst NC called Animal Advocates of Moore county.
I found the book to be excellent !!!!!
Maureen Burke-Horansky
- Marc Bekoff has rattled more than a few cages in his long career as a cognitive ethologist, but that does not make what he has to say any less true. This book summarizes the case for recognizing the similarities we share with our non-human mammalian companions, and it does so with flair, as well as attention to scientific detail.
For scientists or simply science buffs, this book has plenty to satisfy, but it's not just for them. This book is more for the average American who has always sensed the truths of non-human emotional lives (or maybe even has not), but is curious about the science behind the facts.
I have long been fond of saying "a mammalian brain is a mammalian brain is a mammalian brain, whether it belongs to you, your cat or my horse." Marc Bekoff makes this same statement with much more clarity and deeper understanding.
This book should leave you with a greater respect for the lives of the non-humans we share this planet with, and a deeper understanding of the ways our experiences here are the same, rather than focusing on what's different. It turns out the similarities are greater than the differences!
But all the science aside, this is also a book filled with great stories of observations of scientists and laypeople alike that back up the studies. Stories like the one told by an e-mail friend of mine, who witnessed two young mice trapped, where one helped the other to recover rather than just seeking its own salvation (I wonder if humans would have had the same level of compassion!).
This book should change your life. If it doesn't then your mind must be very closed, indeed.
- Do no harm is the essence of this book. It provides colorful insight into the real emotional lives of various animals. The author used a wide variety of sources, & field observations from wildlife biologists. The section on neurobiology were the most interesting for me. The fact that animals share several of our neural structures for emotion came as no surprise to this lay person. I have always felt {& have been bashed plenty for it}, that animals often represent the better half of human nature that we sometimes submerge. Dogs, Reptiles, Monkeys, Rats, Moon Bears, Whales & Elephants are all here. The latter are probably the most fascinating creatures in the book? The authors advocacy for animals was very refreshing to this animal lover. His basic thesis gives us a crucial point, "that if we are not certain about an animals emotions, we should presume that they often feel exactly what we humans do." For that compassionate view I had to up my four star impression to a hearty five.

5 comments about Coton De Tulear (Kennel Club Dog Breed Series).
- Not many people are familiar with this type of dog so when I purchased this book I was very pleased. It tells you everything you need to know about this breed of dog. I would recommend it to anyone who has this dog and is looking for more insight on health matters, grooming, behavior, etc.
MM
- This is the only book that I know of about the Coton de Tulear. There are some informative things about the Coton, but there is also general information about caring for dogs that does not pertain to the Coton. Overall, though, it's better than nothing!
- It is rare to find a book on my dog, a Coton De Tulear. This book was great and I will use for a reference in his care.
- There doesn't seem to be a lot of material printed about this breed so I was excited to find this. It was a gift, it was very well received.
- A well needed book delivered quickly at a crucial time in my life.
This well written book was delivered quickly from Amazon.com.
The day after Thanksgiving I was gifted this wonderful life changing dog, A Coton de Tulear. What kind of dog was this? Where did this breed originate from and why have I never heard of this breed before? How was I to take care of this 9 week old bundle of joy with no knowledge.
I thank the Kennel Club Breed Series book for saving me from what could have been a trumatic out come for the dog and myself. As of today I have a well behaved, trained, groomed properly and feed correctly pup.
Thank you for all the great tips on training and grooming. I am very happy with this book and would highly reccommend this series to all dog lovers. BRAVO!!!!!
