2 comments about Schipperke (Comprehensive Owner's Guide) (Comprehensive Owner's Guide).

  1. A very helpful book for the first time Schipperke owner (as well as a first time puppy owner!)

  2. I was surprised to see Robert Pollet, a French specialist in BSDs and Schipperkes, writing a book for the UK/English language pet/show market. I met him over 20 years ago at the Paris Specialty for the Belgian breeds (all 4 BSD varieties and the Schipperke as well). He has a good solid grounding in the breed and its behaviour and the book addresses many of the basic backgrounds and problems in the breed. He was astute enough to utilize photographs of UK bred dogs for the main, so I would think that this book would do well with the pet market here in the UK, as it has been many years since a book was written about the breed. The standard laid out in the book is the UK Kennel Club's Breed standard for the breed.
Mary Deats (Aradet Schipperkes, and international judge of the breed in USA/Canada/UK and Europe)

1 comments about The Exotic Pet Survival Manual: A Comprehensive Guide to Keeping Snakes, Lizards, Other Reptiles, Amphibians, Insects, Arachnids, and Other Invertebrates.

  1. The first thing that becomes obvious as you open the book is the brilliance of the fantastic photography throughout. It is also one of the book's shortcomings - this unrealistic beauty allows the reader to set unrealistic expectations. Considering the fact that this is a beginner's guide, this book contains a number of things a beginner isn't likely to need and that should have been relegated to an expert's manual. Among these things are the breeding guidelines that are present in every species' description. Likewise, several very important things have not been covered in sufficient depth. The section on feeding is quite limited. More space should have been alotted to heating and UV lamps. Vivarium construction isn't covered in nearly enough detail. There are no guidelines for picking out healthy animals at the stores, and the two-page "Health" spread isn't nearly sufficient. There are also descriptions of some 140 species of reptiles (including snakes and turtles), amphibians, and arthropods (tarantulas, stick insects, etc.). The sections on non-chordates (insects) are especially scant, given the degree to which the average beginner is unfamiliar with these. Each entry contains handy icons gauging aggressiveness, food preferences, number of offspring, environment, and the average difficulty of keeping the specific animal alive. And, of course, the ever-present, brilliant photographs. Generally, an underwhelming effort that nevertheless opens up several possibilities.

3 comments about Conversations with My Old Dog: For Anyone Who Has Ever Loved and Lost a Pet.

  1. A wonderful collection of reflective conversations that slow a racing mind and heart, and provide an audience with some realities of life too easily ignored and neglected. Rob's conversations with Lucy are a gift from both that are best read and read again.

  2. This book offers a charming and candid view into the sorrows and joys of pet ownership, love and loss. I strongly recommend it to anyone who is looking for an honest, emotional and witty read. My favorite of all the poems, "Squirrel Killer," put a smile on my face as I thought of my old dog Blackie. It's refreshing to read such a relatable and lovely compilation of poetry.

  3. Dr. Pasick's conversations and poems remind us why dogs are known as man's best friend. The book is a warm leisurely read that you will want to share with friends and family members.

5 comments about The Guide to Owning a Rat.

  1. This book is full of information but unfortunately gives some very poor advice for any rat owner. Pine and cedar will both cause respiratory problems in rats, which can lead to ill health and secondary infections. Also, many of the pictures in this book are of mice.

If you buy this book, please keep in mind - no pine or cedar bedding for rats! Much better is The Rat (An Owner's Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet) by Ginger Cardinal (Howell Book House) or Rats! (A Fun & Care Book) by Debbie Ducommun (Bowtie Press) .

  2. The author knows what she is talking about. You can tell that she has had a lot of experience with her own rats, has done the necessary research, has talked with other experts in the care and breeding of rats, and presents the information so that everyone can understand it. For the reviewer who commented on the "suggestion" that pine shavings be used, it should be understood that there is a lot of controversy about the use of cedar/pine shavings and when the book was published in 1996, the "experts" were still having their discussions about the subject. As far as the few photos of mice, it is unfortunate that the publishers did include them but that does not lessen the impact of the valuable information in the book. I learned a lot about rats from this book, which has more information in it than many other books on the subject. It's a great book, and people just starting out with pet rats will find it to be a great reference, one they will refer to many times.

  3. This book is full of bad advice. She recommends using Pine which is almost as bad for rats as Cedar is! And some of the pictures in the book are of mice, not rats. ...

  4. I found this great for me when I got my rats since i knew little or nothing about them. Now that i have had them a few years and have gone online for info. I can tell you, it's a great guide for NEWBIES but I also found there to be as much info online.
If i read it now, i would say tell me something I dont know. But, if you have never owned one of the cutties..this is the bible of rats

  5. If you know nothing about owning a rattie then this is the book for you. I knew essentially nothing so this was a great book. I must say, If you already have read up on owning a rat on the internet then you already know everything in this book.
I feel the internet had as much if not more info.
But the price was right and incase my computer goes down, it's helpful

4 comments about Joe Bucher's Crankbait Secrets: The First Complete Guide to Fishing With Crankbaits.

  1. I have read literally hundreds of fishing books and this one is the best-bar none. I have given my copy to several of my fishing buddies and all agree there is no book like this one when it comes to practical information, told in an easy to understand manner. Joe goes through it all from tuning crankbaits, to proper tackle selection, to techniques for the use of crankbaits to catch all of the "big 4"--walleyes, bass, pike and musky. This book is the best!

  2. Check Your Review of Joe Bucher's Crankbait Secrets : The First Complete Guide to Fishing With Crankbaits by Joe Bucher

Here is your review the way it will appear:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Magic of Joe Bucher Reviewer: John Pappas from Chicago subs This is truly a terrific book for all those that love to fish and particularly for those that like to fish for big pike and big musky. Joe walks you through the process of how to be a better overall fisherman better than anybody I know. All the information is current, and it is not just filled with filler stuff just to fill it up either. He talks about lures, about the importance of color, technique, the affect of weather conditions, his past history you name it. Regarding lures he just doesn't talk about them, he tells how to fish them correctly and what has worked for him in the past. Best of all this not some self-promotion book pushing a line of lures, Joe discusses what works! After all, information from Americas leading musky expert and once guide is what we all want to hear. For the above average fisherman there are many tips and secrets sprinkled throughout the book and he shares them with the reader. He also explains why things work, which is very important.

How to fish structure and weed lines is another area that Joe goes into such detail about, that no doubt it will make the difference in your catching ratio. He discusses the moon cycle and its importance, cloudy conditions, the hole nine yards.

There are two books that I would recommend for pike and musky fishing and this is one of them and I have read them all! For you women not knowing what to get your guy for father's day, birthday, or Christmas you can't go wrong here, he'll love it! Guys, if you want something to read in the dead of winter or while on the road, have a drink, kick back and read this information packed book. Make good use of your time!

    Regards, John Pappas

  4. I have been a musky, northern pike, and walleye fisherman for many years and I thought I knew how to fish a crankbait. I never imagined there could be so many more aspects that I have overlooked. I also consulted some of my fellow fishing friends and they also stated that there are things in this book that they have not thought of. They all make sound sense. This book explains things from all angles. It includes science, logic, and personal knowledge that makes it a must read for any fisherman serious about catching BIG FISH using crankbaits. Lastly it is easily read and will be informative for the beginner as well as the accomplished angler.
