2 comments about Housebreaking and Training Your New Puppy.

  1. About half of this 64-page book is actual training advice. The other half consists of filler in the form of pretty dog pictures. For $1 more you can get Shirlee Kalstone's "How to Housebreak Your Dog in Seven Days" -- 70 pages of training advice (similar to Kelly's) plus background not in Kelly's book that will be useful to many readers.

  2. I recently bought a Jack Russell Terrier, and anybody that owns one knows why I needed this book. My puppy is very fiesty and head-strong, which means he was not easy to train. I didn't know where to turn and almost thought about selling him because he was too much to handle. I finally decided I would send him to obedience school, but in the mean time I would buy a book to perhaps teach myself a little something about housebreaking new puppies. I browsed through numerous books, many sounding too much alike, which made it all the more difficult to decide. When I came to this book, after breezing through several pages, I realized this was the book for me. Easy to understand, and the illustrations helped out a whole bunch. I immediately started using the many tips they offered and within days started to see a change in my puppy. I couldn't believe it! The book is not real long, which is great for those of us that work. It's easy to read and comprehend and apply to any situation. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a fun, easy-to-read book loaded with great tips!

1 comments about Alaska Whales and Whaling (Alaska Geographic).

  1. Alaska Whales And Whaling: Volume 5, Number 4 is a very special reprint of a periodical first published in 1978 and which offers an amazing look Alaska's whales and the tradition and industry of hunting these great beasts. Stunning full-color photography combines with an intensely detailed text covering shore-based whaling, as well as traditional and modern ocean whaling among Alaska's Native American population. Alaska Whales And Whaling is enthusiastically recommended as a dazzling, impressive, and information-packed 144-page presentation and history.

3 comments about 101 Uses for a Dog.

  1. A TRUE DOG LOVER'S DELIGHT! Charming, fun, cute, adorable are all words which can be used to describe this wonderful little book. It is a collection of 101 well-chosen pictures of dogs with a descriptive word or phrase as the title of each picture. The book is divided into four loosely grouped themes. First is titled "in and around the house" and is composed of 24 pictures. Second is "as playmates", 22 pictures. Next is "as tireless helper", 28 pictures, Last is "and specialty uses", 27 pictures.

There are a myriad of breeds, but not surprisingly given their popularity and photogenic qualities, golden retreivers and black labs are most heavily represented. (This was fine with me, since we own one of each.) All different sizes and ages appear, and in fact one of the really nice pairings is the juxtaposition of "someone to grow up with" followed by "someone to grow old with". Some of the other entries familiar to any dog owner or fan are "gardener" (and the related "landscaper"), "exercise partner" and not surprisingly the classic "rescuer". (Guess which breed?) There are also such clever poses as the "weathervane" and the "water quality specialist". It is hard to choose a favorite, but I would probably chose "surrogate sister" although the "lookout" , the "bellhops", the "partners-in-crime " and "playing hide and seek' are close runnersup.

This is a wonderful book to keep on a coffee table or in a reading basket. Your guests will enjoy perusing it and you will want to just pick it up from time to time when you want to look at something that will quickly elict a smile. Note that is very small, but the size is appropriate for the format. As noted above, my only complaint is that it is overpriced if you pay full price. It is clearly meant to appeal to people as an impulse purchase or small gift item; I picked it up next to a cash register at a gift shop while on vacation, and I was entranced enough that I decided to buy it but felt as if I was being overcharged (similar to many other items in the store). However, I am glad that I purchased it - the pictures have been a source of frequent joy since then. It would certainly make a wonderful gift for any dog lover who you know, it is appropriate for all ages.

  2. This is a cute picture book that features dogs doing what they do best, being man's best friend. Every page features a different picture with a different dog and a one or two word description. Uses range from the fun (pillow and secret sharer) to the more useful (paper boy) with a few serious thrown in for good measure (search and rescue). The pictures are so cute that any person who loves a dog will smile the entire way through.

  3. I bought this book as a gift, but being a dog lover, read it first. I was disappointed because, the book is small and just "okay"--it was mildly humorous, but certainly nothing laugh out loud. I'd pay (less) for a book like this, so I'm returning this one to put my money to better use...

1 comments about Unlock Your Riding Talent: 30 Key Exercises.

  1. I love this book. It makes sense on the page, and sense when I am riding. I've never had a lesson with Tina, but I tried out some of the exercises and they really work. It's as if she remembers what it's like to be an ordinary rider (though she's obviously not an ordinary rider and trainer herself!) and she has designed these exercises to suit the ordinary rider, and the more ambitious one, providing ways to train yourself for that. I also do a bit of teaching, and I tried out some of the simple stuff on my pupils and they loved it too! It's like I've got a never ending pot of ideas at my finger tips. This book will improve your riding no end.

1 comments about Colorado Birds: A Reference to Their Distribution and Habitat.

  1. This book is extremely well-researched and every state should have one like it. The book covers the status and distribution of the 443 that have been observed in the state. Each bird has a text overview including breeding, winter, and migration ranges and elevation distribution, relative abundance of each species by region and season, and unusual records, birds of special concern in Colorado, and historical changes in distribution. The beginning of the book has a really useful section on the different habitats, too. A great resource for a Colorado birder!

5 comments about Holistic Animal Handbook: A Guidebook to Nutrition, Health and Communication.

  1. I bought this book on a whim after reading about animal communication. Each subject that the book covers could of course be (and probably is currently) the full subject for yet another book, but it was a great intro to animal communication, raw feeding and the Bach flower essences. I read it in a day and was intrigued enough to buy another of the authors' books. Mind you, this is a book for people who are quite open-minded and seriously into their companion animals. Not at all traditional ways of taking care of animals, but certainly something worth looking into if you can open your mind a bit.

  2. I honestly don't have the time to read all the books I buy within the time period that Amazon sends out the survey, so I will say this review is based on some sheepish quick skimming of the first few chapters. As I read the excerpts, I am getting sucked into reading this a bit more... of course, the book IS for the demographic of pet owners that are willing to spend $40 on a 17lbs bag of cat food. =)

P.S. I recommend Innova, but the NaturaPet company has several good lines. Regular pet stores carry some organic lines, after this brand (special pet stores) Newman Organics is the next in quality, followed by the By Nature and Naturals in regular Pet stores.

    [...].

  3. This is a useful book with information not available elsewhere which gives you info not only on a healthy, natural approach to feeding animals, but specifics for different breeds. We are killing our pets with dried kibble, and this book tells you not only why this is so, but gives you alternatives.

  4. The authors of this book basically think that they are animal psychics. Red alert! Right away that tells you something...their whole book is filled with nonsense about communicating with your pet telepathically and teaching holistic care and feeding. They also talk about herbal remedies, which was somewhat interesting, but, thinking realistically, I wouldn't use them.

Overall, this book has very little substance to it. There was not much at all to be gleaned from it. I knew most of the information already without reading this book. To sum it all up: it was a thin read, and very disappointing at that.

  5. This book is a great resource for pet lovers to use in dealing with any behavioral problems their furry friends display. I would recommend it to anyone that owns cats, dogs, birds, or horses - tons of good information on what makes these lovely animals tick.

Based on the recommendations in the book, I bought "Rescue Remedy", and use it every now and then on my little dolls, Gigi and Lulu. It quickly soothes and relaxes them - works great! I wish I'd found this stuff before! This book also discusses bach flower essences, and which ones might be best for your animals, based on their behavioral problems. Gigi used to be a holy terror, and she's become the sweetest cat since I started retraining her.

Definitely check this book out if you are a pet lover! Another great herbal resource to try - prescription for nutritive healing, herbal meds. I will never take non herbal medicine or go to a non-holistic doctor again, if I can help it.

1 comments about A New Owner's Guide to Brittanys (New Owner's Guide to).

  1. I purchased this book because it was written by the breeder of my Brittany. The book covers the basics, from where the breed began to how to pick a puppy. I think it is a must read for those thinking of purchasing a Brittany. They are not the breed for everyone and the book addresses the ins and outs of the Brittany personality.

2 comments about Loricariidae - The Most Beautiful L-Numbers (Aqualog Special).

  1. All of the Aqualog books are excellent value, although they are not particularly cheap. They are full to the brim with first class colour photographs and to reproduce these in a book is an expensive process. Whether they are about the beautiful L Number now coming into the aquarist trade or some other species of fish they are the most comprehensive identification books you can buy. They never become dated because as new fish become available to the aquarist trade the books are updated. There is not a lot of literature on L numbered fishes, so this book is invaluable.

They do not deal with the basics of fish keeping, there are many and varied books that do that. They are in the main a fish identification encyclopaedia and not a lot more. But for those aquarists who are particularly interested in a single species they are indispensable.

  2. This book offers classification of all the new Loricariidae on the market. It tells the maximum size the fish can get and what temperatures it likes to live in. I hope everybody enjoys this book as much as I do.
