1 comments about Lonesome: Memoirs of a Wilderness Dog.

  1. I have just finished reading this beautiful book with tears in my eyes.
I lived the life of the dog all the way through, perhaps because I had a dog so much like Lonesome, only she was a house dog and spoilt, Some dogs are so intelligent and always faithful.
It is a butifully written story, very descriptive and you feel you are there. But I am a wilderness lover despite the fact that I grew up alone with my parents in the "Bush" and still love it.
A must read for anyone who loves dogs or the wilderness

3 comments about Living with a Pug: Book with Bonus DVD (Living With a Pet Series).

  1. Really fun book with lots of touching and informative sidebars on every aspect of owning a Pug including agility, therapy dog, rescue etc. Highly reccomend it. A Fun and interesting read. If you love Pugs then you'll love this book.

  2. I was very glad to buy this book. I have read other books on the pug breed, this by far is one of the best I've read.Since I am first time owner of a pug dog,it helped me have a better understanding of a very comical, loyal and loving pet I am proud to own for 8 years now.

  3. Having met Alison a number of times both on this side of the Atlantic at the Pug Dog Club of America National Specialties as well as at seeral Crufts shows I was curious to know what her book was like so I quickly ordered it. It arrived the day my litter of one was born. Since I was up for the night anyways I settled next to the new mom and her pugette and began to read the 128 page hardcover book. Each of the ten chapters provided interesting and very valuable information for any one who is considering getting a Pug. The first chapter introduces the breed and gives a bit of history covering their Imperial heritage, their European introduction and British royalty connections. It then crosses the Atlantic to the American Pug and brings you current with names of some rich and famous people who have been Pug fanciers. All this information is pretty much the standard fare for a book on Pugs. But the second chapter is the one that really captured my attention: Choosing a Pug. this chapter is the one that will get me to recommend this book to those who are beginning their search and are wanting, or in my estimation needing, more information on the breed. Each Chapter there after: Ariving Home, Early Lessons, Caring For Your Pug and even Problem Behavior all help someone who is soon to select their future companion to learn more about what they may expect as an owner of a Pug, puppy or adult. The next three chapters address activities owners of Pugs can do with their dog including information on Canine Good Citizen, Obedience, Agility, Freestyle, Carting, Showing, Therapy dogs, and breeding. Sprinkled throughout the book are highlights focusing on some special Pugs and their owners detailing their accomplishments. The last chapter, Health Care, is written by a Veterinarian. Thre is special attention to breed-prone problems. Although Ms Moun is from England she addressed the USA Pug Fanciers interest and concerns thourghly.

5 comments about Catch Your Dog Doing Something Right: How to Train Any Dog in Five Minutes a Day.

  1. We rely on the expertise of others who take their work as seriously as we take our own, because we cannot be experts at everything. Krista Cantrell is the expert I (as an educator) recognize: Learning Styles evaluation for dogs-well, duh, of course! Individualized Educational Plans (IEPs) for individual dogs-How lucky could your dog get to have this quality educational attention, learning diagnosis, and training consultation! How lucky you and I are to have found such an organized master trainer who is so able to communicate practical exercises, so that our dogs are safe in our often unsafe human world. So that we don't worry so about them. So our dogs become family members who are better loved and welcomed than we imagined possible. It's all in her book. Catch Your Dog Doing Something Right is THE book to read.
    Review by Sheron Steele, VA

  2. The techniques really work and are simple to implement. Krista even explains how to evaluate your dog to help you understand how your dog learns. Her writing is easy to understand, and she uses real life stories.

The training is broken down into five-minute lessons and even shorter ten-second sessions that reinforce the behavior. Each lesson is step-by-step reinforcing basic commands such as sit, down, stay, etc. but played like a game. My dog loves our "training" time since she just thinks she's playing.

Krista includes help sections throughout the book to help you get the dog's attention. She also provides techniques to change a dog's unwanted behavior such as excessive barking.

I really recommend this book for the fun-loving, busy person who wants a well-behaved dog for a companion.

  3. I love this book.
It is easy to read and understand. It starts with evaluation of the dog and assesing the strenght and weakness of his/her learning abilities. Training...or better called teaching-is set of games, what dogs love.
I really appreciate the teaching strategy of looking at owner and paying attention- without jerking collar or using prong collars! That's an absolut must in training.
There is also part about bad habits. And some Earth energy massage for your dog, if you are into "chi".

  4. Krista's technique takes a common sense approach and a gentle way for our animals to learn "acceptable" behavior. I have brought 3 of my dogs to her classes - based on this book - and have seen dramatic differences in their behavior. Mostly though, this book helps the human companion learn how to work with and listen to their animals. I hope more people take on this progressive approach to non-violent training. The energetic healing chapter adds a new dimension to behavior therapies.

  5. Excellent book! I bought it directly from Krista in AZ, she really knows what our animals are thinking! This will help the novice and those just touching up on dog communication skills. The breathing, centering ideas are similair to TTouch principles and REALLY work!

1 comments about Women & Cats: Women & Cats Will Do As They Please, and Men and Dogs Should Relax and Get Used to the Idea..

  1. Whoever chose the photographs for this delightful book has managed to capture the essence of the intimate relationship between women and our feline companions. If you love cats, it will be impossible to frown while paging through this book; it will coax a smile out of you on your worst day. The well-chosen quotes that accompany each cat and woman friend are food for the soul. Best read it with your cat on your lap and a hot cup of tea at hand.

5 comments about Basset Hound: An Owner's Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet.

  1. After much debate and the reading of this book I was convinced that the Basset Hound was exactly the dog I needed. I recommend this book to anyone interested (or just merely curious) in learning more about Bassets. I will say, however, that no book can prepare you for the both the joy and (if I may be honest) frustration that a Basset can bring to you and your family! I wouldn't change Chloe (my Basset Hound) for the world!

  2. I thought that this book was very useful. I have had many breeds during my lifetime, but had never had the joy of sharing it with a Basset Hound. This book provided me with alot of information about the breed, so much that I had to read it twice. It also prepares you for most events that you will experience from the time he is a puppy (including all the bad times). It is a must for any Basset Hound lover.

  3. I thought this book was great because it was very informative and wasn't dry in thee way the information was presented.

  4. I was looking for a book to give me ideas about raising a basset hound, a very idiosyncratic dog. This book instead gives a brief history of the breed and then devotes the rest of the book to general advice about raising dogs of any breed. I already had a general book and found the repetition of ideas unhelpful. Also, the title and presetation are misleading since they make it look like the book is all about bassets. I am still looking for a book to help me specifically with training my basset.

  5. Barbara Wicklund's Book on The Basset Hound : An Owner's Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet (Owner's Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet Series), is an excellent beginners guide to Basset Hound ownership and general dog care. The text is very informative and even provides the reader with information on dog training, pet therapy and more. The pictures are wonderful and old and young alike can learn from what is presented throughout. I highly recommend it for new basset hound owners and especially children who want to take more of a responsibility with the family pet.

1 comments about Lizards in the Terrarium: Buying, Feeding, Care, Sicknesses, With a Special Chapter on Setting Up Rain-Forest, Desert, and Water Terrariums (Complete Pet Owner's Manual).

  1. This book show its age. It was written over 10 yeares ago, when it was thougth that iguanas were carnivore(they are folivores). The only parts that are really good are the list of plants and a few of the tips on setting up tanks. It has soome really nice photos too. I would not really reccomend it. It was proabably very cutting edge when it came out, but a lot (not most) of the info is out of date. I reccomend buying a newer book.

3 comments about Yorkshire Terrier (Kennel Club Dog Breed Series).

  1. I also have the "Silky" in this series, which I thought gave me more information. But maybe it merely seemed that way because it was read first. I would have liked to have had more info on health. Nevertheless, worth the price I gave.

  2. WAS OK. NOT AS COMPREHENSIVE AS OTHER KENNEL CLUB BREED SERIES. DOESN'T COVER SPECIFICS IF YOU ADOPT AN OLDER DOG ETC.

  3. More info on the health problems and showing...Ok info on the daily care and inprotant info on training and puppy

3 comments about Marine Aquaria and Miniature Reefs: The Fishes, the Invertebrates, the Techniques.

  1. This book gives a strong foundation for the beginning marine aquarium hobbyist, but also is helpful to those with more knowledge. Good pictures & illustrations, too.

  2. The book has all you need to know to get started in marine aquarium keeping. The pictures and diagrams are wonderful, the writing is very easy to understand. I'd recommend this book for all new marine hobbyists, as well as those who have been involved in the marine hobby for a while...a great resour

  3. This was the first book I bought as I dove into the hobby of miniture reef aquaria. It has nice sections on tank setup and fish selection, but lacks substance in the corals area. This would be a great book for a fish-only tank hobbiest, but for those seeking to create miniture reefs in their homes, I would recommend something with a little more depth.
