5 comments about The Welsh Terrier Leads the Way (The Pure Bred Series).

  1. Even it's not written in my own language, as I speak Portuguese, reading this book was like having the author with me on a very nice talk about Welsh Terriers , talking about her experiences, and teaching me about this wonderfull breed.

  2. From Reviewers Bookwatch--February 1999 "Welsh Terriers are known to be a quirky and independent, and Bardi McLennan brings these delightful canines to life in THE WELSH TERRIER LEADS THE WAY. The book is destined to be a classic reference on the breed. Mclennan looks at the development of the breed, the land where it was created, and the purpose for which it was bred. The WELSH TERRIER touches on all aspects of owning a welsh terrier, from history to breeding, from prominent kennels to whelping a litter. Comprehensive, insightful, authoritative, THE WELSH TERRIER is essential for all who own or aspire to own this remarkable animal"

  3. From the Rocky Mountain Welsh Terrier Club Newsletter..." Bardi's authorial voice is quite clear in this wonderfull new book. It's not just a dry-as-dust recitation of pedigrees, but a lively, affectionate introduction to the breed and to the people both here and abroad who have loved and safeguarded it over the years. There are many pictures of show champions both new and old. This is not one of those dog books which makes the dog sound perfect for everybody, but a realistic treatment of a dog we'll all recognize.

  4. The Welsh Terrier Lead The Way has a good handle on the historical aspects of the dog. However the lack of quality photos distracts from the beauty of the breed and the many wonderful characteristics are blurred by the black and white photos. The book contains many old photos from past champions and breeders but does not contain the in depth information that many people who are interested in the breed are looking for. If you are interested primarily in the dogs history then this is a good book for you.

  5. The author gives us the accumulated wisdom of many years as an outstanding breeder and authority on the breed. The books serves both the novice and experienced breeder well. Also seems intended to introduce the general public to Welsh Terriers and turn them into breed enthusiasts.Portland, OR

5 comments about The Eclectus: A Complete Guide.

  1. I found this book to be a great overview that saw me through every stage of my Eclectus flock -- from acquisition and housing to breeding. I've appended the summary on the back cover:

    Quote

Roger Sweeney has spent several years at various zoological and bird gardens in the U nited Kingdom. In 1989 he became Livestock Manager at "Birdworld", the United Kingdom's largest bird gardens. While at Birdworld success was achieved with a wide diversity of species, including Parrots, Softbills, Pheasants, Ratites, Penguins, Spoonbills, Wading birds and Birds of Prey.

The Eclectus Parrot has been bred at Birdworld consistently over the last 10 years and considerable work has been carried out into its incubation and neo-natal care.

In 1993 Roger became a full time consultant at "Birds International", one of the world's largest breeding and research centers located in the Philippines. This facility houses what is surely the world's largest collection of captive Eclectus Parrots!

While at "Birds International" Roger was also responsible for the management of some of the world's rarest birds including the Spix Macaw, Mount Apo Lorikeet, Sumba Hornbill and Palm Cockatoo.

As of mid 1994 Riger has been retained as a consultant to "Loro Parque".

  2. If you are looking for a book on keeping Eclectus parrots as pets, you will probably find this book disappointing, although it does contain limited information on the subject. (Unfortunately, no book has been written that includes extensive information on Eclectus as pets.) However if you are interested in the natural history of Eclectus parrots or in breeding Eclectus, this book should be part of your library. The chapter on natural and avicultural history is especially strong and brings some sense to the confusing topic of Eclectus subspecies.

  3. The book provides some good and useful information about Eclectus Parrots but not enough to justify the price of the book. It is not a big book at all. The book does not go into much detail about things. For example, the author mentions the importance of having the right size and type of perch but never really says what that is specifically. How big around should the perch be? He doesn't say. If money is no big deal then this is a good book to add to your collection of books about Eclectus parrots.

If you are interested in becoming an Eclectus breeder this book might be worth while. Breeding seems to be the main focus of the book.

For dealing with parrot training and parrot problems and such I recommend "Guide to a Well-Behaved Parrot" by Mattie Sue Athan. There are some things I don't agree with in the book like her recommendation not to carry your bird around on your shoulder but there is a lot of good stuff in the book.

  4. I bought this book with the expectations of helping me prepare to train a baby eclectus, and was very disappointed. This book covered more information about the history and the anatomy of this parrot, rather than providing any helpful information for an owner to help understand and deal with the behavior and training of this bird. I have purchased other parrot training books that may not apply specifically to the eclecuts, but it does cover more useful information. The book does have good pictures if that is what you are looking for.

  5. THis book is more useful for its' pictures than it is for the information on dealing with an electus parrot. It does not go into detail about any of the topics that it should cover. It gives you more information on the history and anatomy of the parrot, than it does on this parrot's behavior. Nor does the book provide any training techniques or answers to behavior problems. I think you would be better off buying a general parrot training and behavior book, than buying this guide to the eclectus.

  1. This book is awesome. It provides interesting insights into cat behaviour with great photos. If you like cats, you'll love it. It's out of print so you may have trouble getting a copy, but if you see it buy it! Ee the cat is really cute!

  2. This book is a wonderful read for anyone interested in cats or animal behavior. I'm even thinking of applying to Mutsu-san himself to see if I can work at the Kingdom! Read it...you'll be as impressed as I was!

1 comments about What Puppies Do.

  1. If you really want to get a puppy but can't have one because of whatever reasons, get this book. That's what I did. It will give you the virtual pleasure of puppy ownership, making you smile and tear up a little bit every time you open it. It's filled with tenderness, sensitivity, and simple love for the animal. Of course, if you enjoyed Sharon Beals' "What Dogs Do," you will certainly love this one.

1 comments about Home Dog: Revolutionary Rapid Training Method: How to Train Your Dog to Obey and Protect You.

  1. This author was recommended to me by a breeder who competes with his dogs in hunting trials. The breeder is a firm believer in gentle methods and a trusting relationship. However, before I ordered the book,I read reviews of Mr. Wolters other books on Amazon and was prepared for the worst old fashioned, fear based, compulsion methods. I was wonderfully surprised!

This is one of the finest books on choosing and working with very young puppies I have ever read (and I have read MANY). The author's experience and love of dogs is evident throughout, as well as his very clear admonishment of EVER being too harsh, or pushing any pup past his comfort level in exercises. The goal of the exercises with very young dogs is to build trust and confidence in the dog he will become.

The book IS a little dated, very little is said about spay/neuter and crate training, and if there are any New Yorkers still tying their puppies to parking meters outside a store, they must not be very bright. But I thought the references to "Women's Lib" were cute. Its now VERY un-PC to say that to get the dog you want, you are best off with a young, good pup instead of an adult rescue, but its true. "Spanking" is also VERY un-pc. While the author refers to it, he also repeatedly states that NO harsh discipline of any sort is appropriate for young pups. Considering it was written THIRTY years ago, I think its brilliant. He was actually saying back then that people confuse dog breeds "train-ability" and "intelligence"!

Mr. Wolter's experience is obviously tilted toward more "eager to please" breeds (most training books are) but because the book deals with very young puppies who haven't really developed into the more aloof specimins they may become, the advice is still excellent. Your loving tone may be enough for a middle of the road retriever pup, but keeping focus for more independent types may require a treat or two and this can easily be worked into the exercises.

The author assumes that it is being read by a dog lover who will make loving decisions. The format is such that the book MUST BE READ, not treated like a recipe book where you can just open to chapter SIT STAY. But its a great read and his style is easy and clear.
The heartbreaking true story of a sweet pup that was subtly pushed too hard should be required reading for anyone working with a puppy.

And just to be clear, the "Protection" part of the title means bark like hell and be VERY scary on command, or when strangers approach and nothing more. The author feels very few people can handle pets that willingly attack and bite human beings. Its a good call and very expected from a dog lover who works with the public.

4 comments about The Wild Life of Pets: A RUBES (R) Cartoon Book (Rubes(r) Cartoon Pet).

  1. This book is just too funny! I laughed out loud several times while reading it. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because of the price; $7 is a lot for a 20 minute read.

  2. The funniest thing I have ever read. I wet myself while reading the series.

I would suggest that you keep a spare pair of underwear handy when reading these books.

  3. Leigh Rubin captures the wild side of our pets that makes us laugh out loud and immensely glad to claim four-legged critters as our friends. All his cartoon collections are fantastic, but the Wild Life series should appeal to EVERYONE. Beautiful books, and very afforadble. Great gifts for people (and critters) of all ages!

  4. Rubin's masterful understanding of the inner workings of a pet's mind translates into hilariously funny cartoons. I strongly recommend this book as a gift to friends who enjoy laughing!
