1 comments about Cats in the Louvre.

  1. Amazon has done a very good job of describing this 80 page book. There are images from several of the departments of the Louvre, including both an overview of the work of art and a detail focused on the cat. Rizzoli has done an excellent job of reproducing the images.

The book was published in French last year, and both the French and English versions are beautifully produced. The comments by Frederic Vitoux are brief but add real value to the images.

If you find the cover image irresistible, you'll enjoy this lovely little picture book.

    Robert C. Ross

1 comments about The Percheron Horse in America.

  1. I chanced upon this book while browsing for a title to donate to our small-town local library in memoriam for a deceased friend who was very active in old time farming displays with draft horses. (A practice we substitute for funeral flowers) Having grown up on the edge of the Percheron epoch in this country, I bought this book for myself. Upon reading it, I found a comprehensive history of the Percheron Horse that takes up where the previous history of the Percheron Horse leaves off. It's all here, the detailed story of the rise and fall of the glistening blacks, grays and dappled draft horses of yesterday. We find that the old gray mare certainly ain't what she used to be and how that all came about. We travel in time from the massive production of the American Percheron breeding movement in this country to the near extinction of the Association and the movement of their offices from the Chicago Stockyards to a small rural farm in Indiana, where the incubus of the Association survived. Then, the influx of interest in draft horses grew and the breed proliferated to the levels of today. The names which ring famous throughout the history of the breed, not only of the horses, but of the men and women who made the breed here in America are featured along with graphic illustrtions. This book is not only packed with the history of the Percheron horse in America, but is full of pictures from the beginning to the end pages which feature detailed timelines and chronological tables defining the rise, fall, and resurgence of the breed. If you are interested in horses, read this book. It will deepen your understanding of the majesty and dedication of breeding and change forever your ideas of the "old gray mare".

3 comments about The Cult of the Koi.

  1. Great book! Equally helpful for the novice and experienced Koi lover alike! Great pictures and detailed descriptions.I highly recommend this book.

  2. I don't think this is the best book on Koi. Although it covers all the standard topics (Koi identification, pond building, filtration system, diseasees, etc.), it does not give enough details in each topic. The "Tretra Encyclopedia Book of Koi" is by far the best . I know, it is not available for sale any more, but try to find it in a library. It is well worth the effort and you can save money as well.

  3. The book is an excellent reference for beginners and experts as well. It gives a great overview of the history of Japanese, Domestic and German Koi. It gives an excellent review of the different types of Koi that have help me a great deal in identification.

My local Dianichi and Sankaye Koi dealer also says that their consensus is that Cult of the Koi is by far the best they have ever seen.

  1. This book was chose to be on the prestigious 'DogRead' as a book selection of the month. We only do 12 books a year and this was April 2001. The author comes on line for the whole month to answer questions on the book. It was very well received by our 3000 member email group. The author was very knowledgeable and easy to understand even though also very in depth.

3 comments about Animal Tracks of the Southeast States.

  1. the sketches are not very crisp and the descriptions are just like those in another book I read;Animal tracks of florida georgia and alabama. the books give tracks for some animals that dont seem to be relevant such as mice and rats. Who wants to track those. Harbor seals in North Georgia. They dont even have turkey tracks in the book. Horses are included like these are even a native species.

  2. Good size for a field book. Most of the tracks inside are shown at life size. Some information about each species and how to tell it from other species.

  3. Chris Stall has outdone himself. This small, handy book is a must for anyone who ventures out into the many wilderness areas across the southeastern United States. It has an excellent collection of common tracks that a hiker, backpacker might encounter. If you plan to do any kind of outdoor adventure and want to know what is going on around you -GET THIS BOOK!

5 comments about The New Beagle: A Dog for All Seasons.

  1. This book was recommended to me before we purchased our Beagle. I found the book very informative and helpful. After reading this book, we were more than prepared for our new companion and knew exactly what to expect. I highly recommend this book to anyone thinking about purchasing a Beagle or for new owners!

  2. This book is wonderfully written, while it is not geared to a beagle owner in the "pet" set of mind. It is a wonderful tool and a must have for breeders, serious enthusiasts, exhibitors, etc.... My only suggestion would be for the pictures to be in color vs. black and white.

  3. I was unhappy with this book. There is a lot of information if you are a breeder or somebody who wants show your dog. Our beagles are pets, however. We have no interest in showing them. Most of the information in the book seemed to be targeted at people who are raising beagles to show. I was looking for a book that would teach me about the dog but also give me a lot of general information: health issues, concerns, training, etc. My other complaint is that the pictures are old & black & white. ..., I expect to at least get clear, sharp color pictures which add more to the detail or point which is being referenced to or explained by the picture.

  4. Without a doubt the best book on dogs of any breed, and a must for every Beagler. Comprehensive and authoritative, giving you an expert's view on breeding, grooming, training, showing and loving your Beagle. The only bad thing is that other breed enthusiasts don't have anything like it. But then, they don't have Beagles either.

Pay special attention to the section on distinguished pedigrees. It helped me find one of the top beagle breeders in the country and eventually get a great dog from them.

  5. This book is an excellent comprehensive work about the technical aspects of beagle care. The sections on breeding, ailments and general health care are covered in clear, crisp detail; the technical information that was once privy to vets, breeders and other groups is now accessible to all with an interest in this lively, intelligent little hound.

This work is a compliment to the intelligence of its readers; it gives good, in-depth information without lagging or losing pace.

The photographs are superb and this is certainly something that will either pique one's interest in beagles or for those who own beagles, appreciate their lively, spirited little hounds all the more.

3 comments about The History of Fighting Dogs.

  1. Pitting man's best friend against man's best friend counts among the most heinous crimes our race has ever committed. Animal rights activists and many dog lovers cannot bear the thought of dog fighting as an acceptable "sport," yet the breeds once used in these bloody games remain among the world's most loved and popular companions dogs. The History of Fighting Dogs traces the fascinating history of the dog pits, and donkeys, to the gory contests with a thousand rats, to the ultimate fight: dog against dog.

We cannot ignore or deny the history of our dogs, or of our race. This important first volume by international dog expert Dr. Dieter Fleig delves deeply into the history of the fighting dog, its effects on our dogs today, and its reflection on the social character of the times.

Over a hindered prints, paintings, and sculptures-many in color- bring to life the woeful tales of the dog pit and the brave canine warriors that proved fearless and relentless time and time again. For advocates of the bull and terrier breeds, for all dog lovers, and for animal people everywhere, this book is a timeless, truthful testament to man's best friend and his all-giving (and forgiving) heart.

  2. A good book describing the opponents the fighting dogs faced and how they were expected to fight them. However there is little information on the breeds themselves. Excellent art work is displayed on nearly every page, and the information is reliable. I would recommend it to people interested in there dogs heritage as a fighter. I gave it 4 stars because I feel it could have been longer. Full of details it is a good book for any fighting dog owner. You'll get a complete understanding where your dog came from.

  3. I am a freash Staff owner i Norway, and got a hole new respekt for this type of dog. How can you not when you read about all the awfull thigs man has done to this amimal, and still it loves us so much. The book also pays a tribut to the war dogs which to few of us know about. The book also tells the reason for animal fights and the social situation. Thank you for this great book!
