1 comments about A Kitten's Life.
- The illustrations are my favorite so have to mention them first - they are so cute and show so well the stages of development in a kitten's early weeks. The story that is used to illustrate mom and kitten's life and the socialization of kittens is very nicely done. For anyone getting a kitten, it is a great way to read about each stage as you wait for your kitten. Also some fun knowledge about cats and their characteristics. Good reading for new cat breeders also to learn about what to expect with their kittens...

2 comments about A Horseman's Notes.
- The older I get, the more I appreciate the vast generosity of horses - and the more I value the rare trainers and riders who are willing to live up to that generosity by truly putting the horse's welfare first. Mr. Herbermann is one of these, and A Horseman's Notes is a wonderful meditation on the lessons learned through a lifetime of riding.
There are sentences here that have the power to change your riding ... if you're ready to read them.
Whenever I see a rider kicking, pushing and fiddling to "make the horse round" or " get him on the bit," I think of Mr. Herbermann's injunction that everything in front of the withers is a "billboard" on which the horse posts his minute-by-minute evaluation of the rider's seat ... and on which the rider writes only at the risk of losing the horse's trust and partnership!
Whenever I hear riders talking about horses as if they were lazy children who have to be forced to work "for their own good," I remember Mr. Herbermann's warnings about the need for riders to put their ambition aside and LISTEN to their horses instead of constantly dictating and demanding. And so on and so forth...
Equally valuable are the illustrations, which show great classical masters riding proud, confident, relaxed horses: a picture-is-worth-a-thousand-words antidote to the stressed out, overbent, tail-wringing performances that give dressage a bad name.
This book goes on the shelf next to Wajten, Podhajsky, Oliveira and the other classics. If you're looking for quick fixes, go elsewhere. But if you're ready to venture into a way of riding that acknowledges the horse as a full and valued partner, then this is a book to read and read again.
- Mr. Herbermann has shown us the way to enter the sanctuary of the horse. This book, A Horseman's Notes, makes the path crystal clear. I've seen Erik ride; he practices what he preaches. Even difficult horses soon come under his tea cozy. If you've been searching for the truth about riding and training horses, this book will shed some much needed light on the subject. Thank you, Erik...and my horses thank you! You are a true Master of Horsemanship.

4 comments about Everything Dog Book.
- I found that this book had alot of sound advice. I especially liked the training techniques because they were alot more effective than the ones recommended in books that advocated treat training. A great book if you want a happier dog who actually listens around distractions.
- Although the "Everything Dog Book" has some helpful advice about selecting a dog & introducing it to your home, the training methods that it advocates are outdated, unnecessary, inefficient and inhumane. The reliance on choke chains and forcing behavior are likely to lead to behavioral issues and can have a very negative affect on the relationship between dog and person. There are far better ways to train a dog to obey that make learning enjoyable and easy for both dog and human. Better options are: "Dog Training for Dummies", "The Dog Whisperer", and "For the Life of Your Dog: A Complete Guide to Having a Dog From Adoption and Birth Through Sickness and Health". The last two choices in particular are great choices as they offer a wealth of practical information that will apply through the life of your dog. For your dog's sake and your own, try a book that relies on training through positive reinforcement.
- The "Everything Dog Book" actually sticks pretty much to the basics of dog care and training, but it presents this information in a highly readable and thought-provoking manner. Want a dog? This book asks YOU why, and what you are looking for in a dog. There are helpful worksheets to assess lifestyle and whether or not ANY dog should be in your future. I like that. At times, DeVito almost seems to be talking the reader out of getting a dog, and this is great, for so many people make such an important decision without seriously thinking of how it will change their lives.
There are some brief, but very accurate descriptions of some of the top breeds (don't look for a comprehensive listing). This will help those unfamiliar with breed profiles to narrow down their preferences in short order. Many helpful hints abound in this book, too. Did you know that if you knick Fido's quick while clipping his nails, common cornstarch will make an effective clotting agent? Do you know ten great questions to ask a breeder? Web sites devoted to dog health issues? DeVito even includes a section of grieving the loss of a companion dog, something often neglected in such books. Another strong point for this book is the presentation style. There are really nice line drawings and half-tone images, along with very interesting side-bars (one is on famous quotes about dogs) scattered throughout the pages. The writing style is breezy but to the point. This is a great book for those who want to get right to the useful information without a lot of digressions. This kind of writing will appeal to young adults as well as adults. Overall, this book covers all the information you will initially need in your quest to obtain and care for a dog. The information is accurate, up to date, and clearly presented. DeVito advocates crate training (and tells why it is NOT a "cruel" technique), stresses the ways in which you incorporate a dog into your ongoing lifestyle, and laces this work with frequent humor. I highly recommend this book to get started, and then checking out "The Art of Raising a Puppy" by the Monks of New Skete.
- I found this book great, for reviewing the different breeds

3 comments about A Bark in the Park: The 40 Best Places to Hike With Your Dog In The Reno/Lake Tahoe Region.
- This book was great to have as I'm not that familiar with the Tahoe area. I only got to do three hikes listed in the book but they were amazing and I probably wouldn't have known where to go w/o this book.
The only thing really missing from this book is a MAP! Otherwise well worth the money.
- A Bark in the Park is a delightful book. Sherril Steele-Carlin covers everything you want to or need to know to walk with your dog in the Reno-Tahoe area, and provides good advice on walking with your dog anywhere. She begins by listing, among other useful items, some tips on physical conditioning, warns of a few hazards you may encounter, covers leash laws, and lists the contents of a first aid kit you should carry.
Detailed descriptions include directions, a brief history of each park, and "Bonus" items, such as a visitor center, historic sites, or an off-leash area for dogs to enjoy. This is a wonderfully comprehensive guide to almost 100 places to hike with your dog.
- I love to walk and hike with my dog, Maggie, and I'm always looking for new places to walk her in Reno and Lake Tahoe. This book has been such a great inspiration -- I've found some new trails and rediscovered some old favorites as a result of picking up this book. I'd recommend it to anyone who loves to hike with their dog and is looking for some new trails, along with some old favorites they might have forgotten.

4 comments about Biology & Diseases of the Ferret.
- This book isn't really meant for pet owners, but for those interested in biology, its a good resource. Despite a fairly thorough review of what's known about ferret bio, its decidedly lacking in some areas. One example is the coverage of vision, which is so small it seems a mere afterthought. We're not even treated with a cross-section of the ferret eye, nor any kind of detailed analysis of rod/cone density, optic nerve cross section, and how these might influence visual resolution. Each chapter, however, does include a list of references.
- this book is a must for caring ferret owners, especially for those who live in a region where medical information about these animals are not so readily available.
- Whilst this book isn't for every ferret owner, it is certainly a signifcant reference for veterinarians, animal technicians, biliogists or the really serious ferret owner. With indepth articles on certain topics (theres a massive section on neurology) most aspects of ferrets biology and diseases are covered in this text. Although the information is becoming a little dated, an update to the text is due out soon. A worthwhile read for anyone who has the time and patience to study it.
- This book is an excellent resource for anyone who would like to learn about the biology of ferrets. There are lots of pictures, both illitrations and photographs of the interal workings of the ferret. It's a great way for anyone interested in ferrets to learn how they work. This book isn't a large one with 330 pages of text and illitration, but the information that it contains is seeping out it's binding. It is very extensive covering everything from ferreting to breeding and the reproductive cycle to common and not so common diseases. With illistrations showing you exactly what everything looks like. This is something every ferret owner should have, and never be without

5 comments about Cat Magic: Mews, Myths, and Mystery.
- This is another great book for the cat lover, it's has cat myth, history from all over the world, with lot's of great art pictures and just good old cat information, it's a fun book!
- It is a little, nice book about the lovely creatures. It is easy to read, but nothing to do with real magic. The title of the book is more or less commercial.
- I couldn't wait to get this book in the mail. It sounded like a great book, and I read it the night I got it. I enjoyed the stories of cats, and the astrological part on cats. I found that there wasn't enough material to practically apply in today's age with one's own cat. The histories presented did not flow, they jumped around in era and subject, sometimes feeling like the same ground was being covered twice. Although I enjoyed the astrology part, it was rather trite. The most frustrating part of the book is the lack of information on the pictures featured. There are some truly fascinating, fabulous pictures in this book, most lacking any explanation or reference. I found that to be very distracting and a big let down. I hope for a revision in the future, as a book like this, done properly, is needed.
- I just bought this book, and haven't read all the way through it
yet,but I'm still giving it 5 stars because there is a lot of
great info and mythology on cats. And the pictures are really great too.If someone is looking for aa book to buy for a cat lover, this is one book that is totally worth the money.
- This book will make a great gift for any cat lover, whether Pagan or not. The book is filled with fun folklore and history about cats. There are legends and beliefs from all over the world! These include cats roles in spirituality, superstitions, gypsies, dreams, symbols, and even a little section on the astrology of your cat. There is also brief information on cat care. The layout of the book is GORGEOUS with photographs or illustrations on every page. The book is made of high quality paper as well! This book is as gorgeous as it is informative and entertaining and I give it an enthusiastic 5 stars! A must have for cat mommies!
