1 comments about Guide to Owning an English Bulldog (The Guide to Owning Series).
- I thought the book was outdated and many of the pictures are in black and white. I found the book to have information on the care of the bullldog, showing the bulldog but once again alot of the information in outdated. I think the book spent alot of unnecessary time on the champion bulldog from different eras and it's owners. This is a book you may want to add to your bulldog library but I would not want it to be my primary book on the bulldog.

5 comments about Cleveland Amory's Compleat Cat.
- I read this compilation of the authors three books a while back and when I came across it the other day I decided that I should write a review on it because of how wonderful I found the books! The author is part of a group who helps find homes for homeless animals and one the group asks for his help in rescuing this cat that she has observed for a while that needs care but she can't catch on her own. He helps her catch the cat, which involves a bit of a struggle and then has to keep the cat at his apartment for a few days until they can get it looked at by the vet and then adopted out to a new family. As soon as he gets it to his apartment, the cat disappears in the apartment and they look high and low to find it-what a humorous event. This is the story of an independent cat and the author and the strong bond that they develop. Beautiful story! As a fellow cat owner, I highly recommend this book.
- Of the three novels included in this book, THE CAT WHO CAME FOR CHRISTMAS is by far the better written for continuity and content. In the latter two novels Amory gets off on tangents and, I think, takes on some of his own "pet peeves" (pun intended). However, the tale wouldn't be "compleat" without the latter two.
Amory's sarcasm, wit, and humor are eminently enjoyable throughout! As one who is owned by a cat with an old soul, as Polar Bear so obviously had, I identified with the interaction and emotion between owner and ownee, even up to the ending, where I cried until my own "owner" abandoned "our" bed to let me weep in peace! (Felines just don't appreciate grief, I tell you! It must be beneath their dignities.)
- Personally, I enjoyed Amory's tale of Polar Bear for several reasons. First of all, the storyline is interesting and realisting, drawing in the reader and never failing to entertain. Second of all, Amory's writing style allows you to feel as if you are the owner of Polar Bear, which is truly amazing because you are no longer simply reading a book about somebody written by somebody, you are in the book itself. Lastly, Compleat Cat is not a heavy read. It is something that you would read when you have some time to spare, without the necessity of becoming deeply involved in it, which can be cumbersome on occasion when you simply want to relax a bit. In a way, Amory's Compleat Cat is like a kid's book for adults. The story is sweet and interesting, not depressing, and light enough to read at any time. Amory is able to put a smile on our faces and keep us turning the pages.
- I found I could identify with the CRF,"Sub q's," the whole 9 yards and even the eventual euthanasia, for I had to go through that with Midnight about 2 and 1/2 years ago and unlike Polar Bear who was the "incredible shrinking kitty," Midnight had to be put down because of nausea and he was 15.
- Cleveland Amory's 3 books about his beloved cat available in ONE VOLUME!! What a great deal. You will come to know a love the person and his little boy as he shares their lives together. If you like cats, this is pure catnip!!

2 comments about Pet Clean-up Made Easy: Tackle Any Pet Mess, Any Time, in a Snap - from Stains and Smells to Fleas and Furballs.
- What a great book! Anyone bringing home a new pet or having problems with an old one will benefit from this book (and I've had dogs and cats all my life)!
- As a veterinarian and author (The Allergy Solution for Dogs, 8 Weeks to a Healthy Dog, and the award-winning The Natural Health Bible for Dogs & Cats) I am often asked about cleaning up after pets, especially those pets with elimination behavioral problems. This book covers this common problem in depth and has some great suggestions on keeping your house clean while living with your pets. An easy read with practical information.

1 comments about Beyond the Rainbow Bridge.
- I discovered this book when I was struggling with the decision to have my 23 year old horse put down. I read it, teary eyed, from cover to cover the night I received it. This book allowed me to see that the feelings I was having were perfectly normal and I was not alone. It also helped me to learn what to expect when the time came. I would like to thank Kimberly Gatto for taking the time to write this book. It was very much needed.

5 comments about Lessons to Live By: The Canine Commandments.
- There are two editions. The newer revised edition is available on Amazon in both paperback (ISBN 0795379348) and hardcover (ISBN 097537933X). 100% of the net proceeds from the NEW editions are donated to animal rescue groups. (Unfortunately there are no donations from this old edition).
You can see the new editions at
The Canine Commandments (paperback)
The Canine Commandments (hardcover)
- Although it will resonate especially strongly for pet lovers, Lessons to Live By: The Canine Commandments is a self-help book intended for readers of all backgrounds, regardless of pet ownership, that draws upon what humans can learn from their canine companions. Timeless wisdom, from the importance of living for the moment to loyalty to the treasure that is friendship and the power of everlasting faith and more - all these are virtues embodied within man's best friend, of which man (and woman) should take heed. "The next time you are with a group of people, count how often their 'conversation' is really nothing more than telling other people how they should behave. 'Don't do that!' 'Put on a sweater, it's cold.' 'Change the station.' Sometimes what passes for conversation is nothing more than a subtle - or not so subtle - series of comments trying to get each other to change - to do what they want, to be like them... Dogs just accept others for what they are, and love them as they are." 100% of the net proceeds of Lessons to Live By: The Canine Commandments will be used for the saving and care of dogs and other animals through the efforts of humane organizations. Highly recommended as an inspirational gift, especially for dog owners but sure to add a ray of cheer for anyone with fond memories of a beloved four-footed friend.
- Artful and well-written, The Canine Commandments uncovers the true wisdom behind a dog's life. The lessons that W.R. Pursche delivers via our canine friends translate perfectly into our daily relationships with other humans, most notably friends and family. At the heart of it all is loyalty and unconditional love.
- I just loved this book! It is really well-written book and the lessons are very inspiring. There is also a great story at the end where a dog 'tells' his story about being adopted and living with his people.
I can't wait to see if the author writes another book!
- While I really love dogs, Pursche's book is really about life and living.
Real simple, fast to read, not too many big words or complicated concepts to digest!
Take an hour or two to read and gain a new perspective on daily living.

4 comments about Macaws: Everything About Purchase, Management, Housing, Feeding, Health Care, and Breeding/a Complete Pet Owner's Manual (A Complete Pet Owner's Manual).
- The pictures in this book are very nice, but that's it! This book is not worth reading and you would be doing your bird a great injustice if you followed any advice from this person. If you want a good book on parrots try "Parrot Training" by Bonnie Munro Doane.
- Of all the books I have read on parrot care, this is perhaps the worst. Particularly terrible is the suggested wing-feather trim, which would lead to a sedentary, unhealthy bird. Much of the advice in the book is contrary to accepted, modern practices. Do not buy it, and if you already own a copy, do the world a favor and destroy it.
- As a veterinary technician in an avian hospital, I can tell you that this book gives poor and even dangerous advice concerning the care of macaws and other exotic birds. The avian veterinarians with whom I work have read the book and feel the same way. I would strongly discourage anyone from purchasing this book. Your local avian veterinarian would be much better suited to recommend books which give accurate information about birds and their care. Great photographs are the ONLY benefit of owning this book but hardly worth the false information printed within.
- I think this book is excellent for beginners with Macaws and even people who know about them and want to know a little more. It has everything you need to know, in fact the entire series of pet books from Barrons does. I just wish they had a web site...

5 comments about Building Your Dream Horse: Charles Wilhelm's Ultimate Foundation Training (Howell Equestrian Library).
- Charles Wilhelm's book, Building your Dream Horse, is well-written, easy to understand, and inspiring. Anyone with a little horse-sense can use what he has to offer to help train their horse. I have recommended it to several people who are delighted with the results they have acheived by following the advice offered here. It seems to be especially helpful to the novice horseman, but even a old cowhand could learn something from this book.
-
I was looking for a step-by-step method for training a young horse, and this isn't it. Mr. Wilhelm describes his round pen or leadline methods for starting and stopping the horse's feet, and then suddenly we are in the saddle teaching the horse to give to the bit, with no explanation of how we got up there!
My dream horse might automatically understand about carrying a saddle and having a rider on board without being systematically taught about those things, but I sure don't want to count on it.
There's a lot of useful information in this book, I'm not going to toss it out, but I'll need to look elsewhere for a system of foundation training.
- I got this book as a gift for my mom, and she loves it. It really fits the "going back to horses" frame of mind, as Charles Wilhelm stated in the introduction. She has had horses her whole life, but hasn't been very involved the past 10-15 years, and Charles Wilhelm seems to understand that, and is helping her to work her way back in comfortably. Great easy read that teaches you a lot!
- Thank you so much for writing such a great book! I found it to be very easy to read and easy to follow when applying your techniques from the book to my everyday handling of my horses. Mr. Wilhelm really knows how to convey his training methods through his words and make it easy to understand. Thank you so much Mr. Wilhelm for your book. I hope to someday make it to one of the horse expositions you go to!
- Over the years, I have bought several different horse training books. But none of these books was as easy to read and undertand as Charles Wilhelm's book. More importantly, the techniques described in "Building Your Dream Horse" are easy to implement! I can definitely see the results in my horse and myself.
There are no "games" or gadgets, just straight-forward descriptions of his philosophy and the exercises. In addition, the stories and examples he provides make this "how-to" book a very entertaining read. Unlike the other horse training books I have, this one won't be gathering dust on the bookshelf.
