3 comments about Its All About Pets And Animals (Memories in the Making Scrapbooking).
- I was looking for ideas to feature dogs & cats and more than half the page layouts in this book concerned farm animals, wild animals, zoo animals etc. I felt the topic should have been one or the other because I felt there weren't enough dog pages.
The layouts gave me a few ideas, but not as much creativity as I was hoping for. I saw some magazine layout ideas for pages about dogs that I liked more that inspired me to buy this book.
- You get better ideas from scrapbooking magazines. This book is very plain, not really creative. If you're trying to get new ideas or techniques, never buy this book!!!!!!!!!!!!I'm trying to sell mine!!!!!!!!!!!!
- There are tons of layout ideas in this book. If you love animals, I recommend you get it. Table of contents are:
1 Dogs
2 Cats
3 Horses
4 Birds
5 Small Animals
6 Farm Animals
7 Zoo & Animal Parks
8 In The Wild
There is 56 pages with 2 layouts per page. Many QUOTES are scattered threwout the book to use on your own pages. I just love this wonderful book. If you scrapbook your pets or any animals, I recommend this.

2 comments about Badge on My Collar: A Chronicle of Courageous Canines.
- Although Marilyn Jeffers Walton is not a search and rescue or a police dog handler, she has spent many years attending regional police dog trials. At the trials, she met and became friends with many K-9 handlers who shared stories about their dogs with her. This, coupled with her love of German Shepherd Dogs sparked her research into the lives that they lead. She wrote Badge on My Collar hoping to enlighten the general public as well as animal shelters.
Badge on My Collar gives the reader a unique collection of true stories about police dogs, one search and rescue dog and one military dog. What I liked about this book is that it shows the reader the successes and failures that police K-9 handlers experience in their training and selection of dogs. Without getting overly dramatic or emotional, Ms. Walton lets us share the joy, pride and grief that the handlers experience living and working with their dogs. She has selected specific incidents for each dog in order to show the reader how the dogs work and the dangers they face. The message about how valuable these dogs are to the police departments comes across in each story.
Ms. Walton is an award winning children's book writer and this was evident in her writing style for this book. She was able to present the material in a direct, simple and informative manner, making it easy for the young reader to enjoy. Although some of the stories have a sad ending, Ms. Walton handles it in a way that does not traumatize the reader. The main message that comes through is the depth of the bond that exists between working dogs and their handlers. This is a fun and informative book for the entire family.
- I read this book in one sitting. I share this author's love for animals and found myself caught up in these stories of canine heroism and courage. A heart warming book that anyone who loves animals will enjoy. (And if you don't love animals, read it anyway; you will when you are done).

3 comments about The Home & Family Protection Dog: Selection and Training.
- For those seeking to protect their home with a dog, this is an essential book. I would recommend ignoring some of the more ad hominem reviews, most of which are deeply factually flawed (Duet helped a Schutzund expert co-author a book on the field, but the Duets are NOT Schutzund trainers).
This book has been used as a training guide for police departments, security firms, etc., and those of us who know the reputation that K-9 Companions (The Duet's training company) has cultivated in Southern California and around the nation over the past 25 years know that this is the first place a layman should turn in order to get a foothold on the security training process. Heartily recommended for all readers.
- This book is a waste of time - it's written by a couple of low level schutzhund trainers trying to pass themselves off as protection guru's. Well....they aren't.
Way too much space spent on training for plain ol' obedience but almost nothing on protection.
The protection training concepts that were included were old and very out of date.
This is mainly a "wannabe" book, save your money on this stinker.
- I have read many books on dog training, but this one I would rate as one of the best in print. I was a novice at the terms of dog training when I went looking for a protection dog, but now I can say I am a responsible and informed dog handler, ready for anything we can learn together. The authors use layman's language so it is eay to understand. They cover all the subjects needed to train the dog, from choosing the right puppy, to feeding it, to responible ownership, and to training it to the highest capacity the dog can work. All the commands are fully explained with good pictures to suppliment. This is the book to own if you want to be a skilled handler to help your dog do its job best:protecting you and your family.

1 comments about Shetland Sheepdogs at Work: Achievements, Breeding, Training.
- This book goes far beyond the idea that Shelties are "just pretty, fluffy dogs." Joanne highlights the intelligence and workability of this delightful breed-she covers almost all areas of dog performance sports that Shelties excel in: Obedience, Agility, Herding, Flyball, Tracking, Search & Rescue, Therapy dogs (and she may be working on another book! ) and not only covers top Shelties in each of these areas, but interviews the owners/handlers/breeders for their training tips and their dogs'lineage. Great info on how to get started in each venue, great photos, and a great tribute to a hardy, versatile, smart AND beautful breed!

3 comments about South American Cichlids IV (AquaLog-Reference Books).
- All of the Aqualog books are excellent value, although they are not particularly cheap. They are full to the brim with first class colour photographs and to reproduce these in a book is an expensive process. Whether they are about many of the different beautiful fishes now coming into the aquarist trade or in this case specifically the Cichlid species of fishes many of which are among the most beautiful fishes. They are first class for identifying that fish that you have had for some time, but have not been able to put a name to.
This is a really beautiful book with some stunning photographs and for anyone interested in Cichlids in particular and fish-keeping in general it is a book to be treasured.
- This is not a beginner book that deals with care or even breeding of these beautiful fish. This is a book that deals with the many wild locale forms and MANY varied aquarium colour strains that breeders have created over the years. As the book description above states, if you want breeding and care information, have a look at the Aqualog Special "Majestic Discus". This book can help you identify where your wild discus came from, or at least the form used to create the colour form swimming in your tank.
- If you want pictures of every possible discus or angelfish color, then this is a very good book. It seems to be targeted to breeders of show fish. For anybody else, it is probably a waste of money. There is no information on breeding or care. There is no attempt to describe the differences between the various sub-species or "breeding forms". Comparing the many beautiful pictures only adds confusion to identification. Reading the several short articles, reinforces the idea that the common discus or angelfish owner should ignore the fancy names (which seem to be very arbitrary at times) and just buy fish that appeal to you. Definitely do not spend extra money for a name.

1 comments about Practical Western Training.
- It has been a while since I read this book, but remember that I found it very informative on a broad variety of western training questions, and can recommend it for anyone who wants to add to their western training library.
The main reason I'm writing this review is to see if there is someone out there who might be able to recommend a book to me... I have been searching for a good book that focuses mainly on training and using the Bosal Hackamore. So far, I've had no luck. Perhaps someone out there knows of such a book and could post it here for me! I'd be tickled to come back here and see such a recommendation! Thanks for your kind attention!

5 comments about Animal Friends, Tail Wagging And Throat Purring Stories of Shelter And Rescue Pets.
- Being able to share Mama D's story was one of the truly memorable times in my life; knowing that her story is just one of millions makes my heart break. Everyone who read my copy of this book has loved the animals, cried over their circumstances, & rejoiced at most of the outcomes. In an age of all the cruelty in the world, it does my heart good knowing this kind of book can touch so many. Christina, thank you again for your belief in Mama D's story & it's ability to touch your readers.

- I haven't read all of this book, but rather the stories that interested me. Several brought tears, usually happy, to the eyes. There is a wide variation of the expertise of the writers, but it doesn't take away from the enjoyment of the read, and shows you don't have to be a professional writer to write a good story. I would recommend this book to those that have an interest in saving unwanted and abused animals, and perhaps encourage more people to seek out adopting these "loosers". Most make our lives much fuller. Heart warming, feel good stories.
- This book was wonderful!! It made you laugh and cry, which is the scale I judge books on. The stories were written in different styles, making it so personal. And it makes you want to head down to the nearest animal shelter to see how you can help. Congratulations to the author. I wait for her next compilation.
- I became aware of this book through the local Pittsburgh Shelter I volunteer for - Animal Friends. The only no-kill shelter in the city of Pittsburgh. It has many heart warming stories and I've sat reading many with tears in my eyes. It not only tells tails of pets from Animal friends, but other rescue groups as well. A must for any animal lover out there.
- This book is the best I've read about rescued pets. Too many people look at rescue and shelter pets as second best. Nothing could be further from the truth. This book shows pets who have changed lives. Whether they come to us at a time we need a best friend or we rescue them when all of their chances are gone. Animals make lives better every day! Thanks to Chris for telling their stories!

5 comments about The Right Way First Time: Teaching Your Dog Kindly and Humanely.
- This book really taught me to understand my dogs. It's easy reading. So many methods out there to train dogs are hostile. This approach to training is much nicer for dogs and people. Many techniques in this book are easy to implement. My dogs responded immediately. The author's pretty cute too. If I had a trainer like that when I first started training my dogs, I'm sure I would have completed their training. Instead, I hired a trainer who scared both me and my dogs. After the first lesson, we all called it quits.
- I work with shelter dogs and recommend this book to other volunteers and owners alike. The methods are completely positive, easy to follow, and fun for the dog and handler. This is a must have book for owners and shelters. Nancy B.
- This book was great in letting me know how my dog was thinking and responding to me. It's different from other training books I've read. Read Chapter 5. It worked wonders on my shepherd. I also have a 6 month old puppy and this book gave me patience. It was a quick read and had great tips I wish I had learned years ago. Definitely worth the read.
- This is a wonderful book. I have been looking for a dog training book that is easy to follow, shows a thorough understanding of canine behavior and uses only positive reinforcement techniques. This book is it! It not only includes all of the above, it also includes a large dose of love, compassion and humor. You can tell that Alana Stevenson knows what she is doing and loves what she is doing. The language is simple and clear. I have learned so much about how dogs see the world which helps me actually enjoy training and not get so frustrated. And, best of all, the techniques work! I would recommend it to anyone.
- I found this book to be a great help in trying to understand why my dog does the things she does. The author really helps me to see that my dog thinks differently than I do, and that for me to really train her and bond with her, I need to understand where she is coming from. I liked the way the author trains me to train my dog, too - no hostility or anger towards my dog - just total acceptance of who my dog is.
It's a book that will teach you about dogs in general and then apply to your own situation. I highly recommend it.
