5 comments about The Tao of Pug.

  1. Whether you're a fan of pugs or not, this book is a crowd pleaser. The lovely black and white photographs are hilariously staged, with Wilson's expressively wrinkly face adding adorable character to every shot. The writing is simplistic enough to be enjoyed by a reader of any age, but still has moments of poignancy ("War is bad for pugs and other living things"). Real taoists can get a laugh out of looking at their religion from a dog's perspective, and everyone else can just admire the clever ideas and charming Wilson!

  2. I'm a Pug fan, so I'll admit bias. The book is on my media room/bar coffee table and our guests have often been delighted with some of the opinions expressed by Wilson.

    It's just a fun book.

  3. I loved this book, and received it as a gift. I wish I could get my pugs to pose like that for pictures, how does she do it? I have purchased this book for other pug friends of mine, and they have simply adored it. I highly suggest this book as a gift to a pug person.

  4. This was great book. The pictures are awesome. It's a must for all pug lovers. I might be a little biased, though, I have a pug named wilson.

  5. The Tao of Pug has great snapshots of pugs, and comically done by "Wilson the Pug", Nancy Levine's pug. 'Black and white isn't so bad', I always think to myself, looking at the pug photos. 'I believe it's just a nice, warm, way of showing pugs off.' The Tao of Pug will always be a family favorite!

5 comments about New Secrets of Successful Show Dog Handling.

  1. If you are brand new to the world of showing you can quickly become discouraged by the "closed society" that the dog showing world often is. I started showing this year with a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppy armed with only the advice of an experienced exhibitor, a handful of showmanship classes and this book. Of the three I would say that this book was the most comprehensive and useful resource. You should still seek out an experienced mentor--someone familiar with prepping and showing your breed...but barring any other input this book WILL get you started. It can't help you with breed specifics, but I found it TREMENDOUSLY informative on the little details for giving your best "presentation" in the ring. Everything from how to hold your leash to how to dress is covered. Yes, that would be redundant for an experienced exhibitor....however even those with YEARS of experience in ANYTHING can always learn something new. Even if you only pick up one tiny tip that helps in the ring it's a worthwhile read!! If you think you already know it all then you should review the credentials of the author....

I will be looking to other books for more advanced knowledge as we progress. But if you are a beginner looking for a fantastic and comprehensive one-stop-get-you-started kind of book, this is it!!

  2. It's about time someone with the experience of Peter Green write a book about showing dogs that doesn't avoid the topic of politics within the sport! Great tips are exposed, though he's a TERRIER man so keep that in mind if you show hounds, working, sporting, etc. It's inspiring and helpful to read.

  3. WOW!!! what a book up to date info and so exact .
excellent techniches and stape by stape on how to.
you feel like you are in the show ring and when you put the book down you want to put the show lead on your dog to practice...very helpfull and inspirering.

  4. Starting my second show dog's career, after blundering my way through with my first one, Peter Green and Mario Migliorini gave me excellent tips and strategies to make the handler pay more attention to his/her job. I love the section on stacking - wonderful photos to show the sublties that beginners don't see. An excellent book for someone with the basic knowledge already down who wants to take their showing to the next level.

  5. This book would be helpful for anyone beginning showing dogs. They really needn't know anything. If you already know what a show is, how to enter and have been in the ring before, you're probably not going to get much out of this. I have a few books on showing that far outwiegh this one. It's basic, simple and for complete novices only...It is written well, and is easy to understand. If this is to be your first book on dog showing, then it will provide you with enough info to get you started. I preferred, The Winning Edge: Show Ring Secrets (Howell Reference Books) and Tricks of the Trade: From Best Intentions to Best in Show, Revised Edition

5 comments about Rex and the City: A Memoir of a Woman, a Man, and a Dysfunctional Dog.

  1. This book is great!!!!!!!! If you love dogs you must read this book. Wonderfully written.

  2. This book is great. I read it in just a couple of days, I could barely put it down. I carried it with me everywhere I went and would sneak in a few pages every chance I got.
If you love dogs, New York City or just want a few good laughs, this book is for you. The love and humor that Rex brings into Lee and Ted's lives is heartwarming. As an owner of two rescue dogs living in a major city, I can relate to a lot of their experiences.
Rex reall showed Lee and Ted how to give and receive love.

  3. I cannot recommend this book enough! From the first page, I was immediately involved with these great characters. The book is non-stop laughs and sprinkled with endearing, heart-warming moments. I truly couldn't put it down! I was eager to see what would come to Rex and his "parents." It is simply wonderful!!!

  4. OMG this was hilarious! but also tender and loving and wise and true. This woman is a terrific prose writer, and I would definately read other books by her. This is the story about rescuing an abused dog and bringing him into a teensy apartment in a bad neighborhood in New York City! who would have thought such a tough beginning (for the dog) would have such a happy ending. bravo! viva rex!

  5. I had read excerpts of this in Bark magazine (yes I'm one of those dog nerds) and was charmed then, and after reading the entire book, remain so. The things I think I like best are, 1) its a really accurate depiction of the trials and tribulations of getting a shelter dog and that transition, 2)as well as how complicated dog ownership can be in an urban area. I mean, don't get me wrong, it's not heavy or serious, but it struck a chord in me- someone who has experienced both of those situations. It's not all sunshine and roses the first day, and no one warns you about that. But that is also where some good comedy comes from. I enjoyed this book very much and would definitely recommend it.

5 comments about Why Cats Do That: A Collection of Curious Kitty Quirks.

  1. There's about five books with the title "Why Cats Do That" or close variations thereon, as well as a yearly calendar, to say nothing of the many books on the same theme with other titles. A testimony to the number of things cats do that make one wonder, "why?"

This book is whimsical in both writing style and its answers, and delightful on that level. The answers are sometimes simply more questions, or musing on the question and coming up with contradictory answers. There are at times references to statistics like how many hours out of the day cats sleep, or to scientific things like the "Flehman response," or to unnamed "cat experts." If studies and footnotes and a bibliography are what you're looking for, then the reader will be frustrated. If you're happy to go from wondering to wonderment, then it's more likely you'll find the book charming.

The black and white pen & ink illustrations included in the book, like the one on the cover, are cute and nicely done. The book itself is nicely bound as well, all traits that make it good light reading for a coffee table, or as a gift.

  2. I love this book. It may be kinda basic but very interesting and informative. Now I can tell their mood and thoughts.

  3. This book was very reader friendly and would be great for someone that doesnt know alot about cats. Its short and basic. There is a chapter on why cats hiss and the authur advised that cats hissed because they were trying to sounds like a snake since most animals fear snakes. Thats alittle hard to belive... thats like saying dogs growl because theyre trying to sounds like a bear or something. Dont buy that to much but the rest of the book was good.

  4. The title describes how we used the book. We ordered several for friends and relatives that we knew had and loved cats. They all enjoyed the book.

  5. This great little book will make a wonderful gift for any cat lover! It provides answers to those little nagging questions that cat lovers have - like why do cats purr and where does that purr come from anyway. It is a small book, well written, and a treasure for the price.

5 comments about My Rescued Golden: True Stories of Rescued Golden Retrievers and the People Who Love Them.

  1. I loved this little book so much. Of course having a golden retriever is what made me purchase the book and it shows what a great love and bond that can form between a Golden Retriever and it's human family. My retriever "Einstein" is a blessing in a beautiful gold fur coat that I just love with all my heart. His precious nose is always at my finger tips when I'm walking around at home and his big beautiful brown eyes are filled with so much love it makes my heart swell. A golden gives so much unconditional love and all they want in return is as much love as the give. This books tells that story over and over again. I never get tired of hearing it.

  2. I felt so honored when asked to provide my Golden story for this book, and when it arrived I let it sit for a few days. I was worried that some of the stories would be sad and open old wounds for me. One day I sat down and read it cover to cover and am a better person for doing so. Author Margo gently nudged each and every one of her authors to speak from their hearts in their own voices and each tale is utterly unique and beautiful. This book pays a fitting homage to the most loving and companionable breed of all time, the Golden Retriever. It is a wonderful testimony to what adopting a rescued Golden can do to enrich the lives of the adopter and adoptee.

  3. Kudos to Margo McHann for putting together such a wonderful book, that will tug at the hearts of all Golden Retriever lovers everywhere! This is a must for anyone who loves or has been loved by one of these wonderful dogs. My own little girl is featured in this book and it will forever be a very special book to me! Thanks Margo, for opening the eyes of the world to "Rescue" and what it is all about!

  4. My Golden Frosty's story in in Margo's book. I read it first when I bought it, I was so proud. Then I started reading each of the other wonderful stories and was feeling every emotion, from tears to happiness and whatever lies in between. Each and every story brought such emotion to me. There are so many out there who love Goldens so much they devote their lives to them. I am very proud to be included in this wonderful book and to have been owned by such a wonderful dog.

  5. In her book, Margo McHann proves that whatever you put into a dog, you get back with interest! The forward to this book couldn't encapsulate it any better: rescued dogs are not second-hand throw aways! Hopefully this book will convince many people why they should adopt from breed rescue groups.

5 comments about Bach Flower Remedies for Dogs.

  1. This book is a must have for dog owners to help themselves and their pets live to their fullest potential. There was clear, simple instruction on the mixing of the essences as well as practical help for behavior problems and also tips for humans too.

  2. As a professional dog trainer with a gentle and holistic bent, I am always interested in information on natural adjuncts to behavior modification. At the time I purchased this title I was already familiar with and had been using the Bach essences for some time, but I still found new and useful information. The book is nicely laid out with a description of each remedy, but it goes even further in suggesting remedies for specific canine behavior issues such as hyperactivity, fear, and aggression issues. There's even a section on remedies appropriate to owners, which is valuable since owners have a huge influence on their dogs' behavior. I would recommend this book to any owner or canine professional looking to become more familiar with the fabulous Bach Flower Remedies.

  3. I am so disappointed with this book. No Index badly organized. I bought this to find remedies for kidney and liver support in dogs. The is nothing about health in here. It is all Emotional healing aggression ect...
What a huge waste of money! I wish I had read the reviews :-(

  4. I found this book very disappointing. A large portion of the book talks about how the remedies apply to humans rather than dogs. The book is badly organized and is not laid out to be an easy to use reference book. There is no index and the table of contents is not very specific. Even the chapter detailing each of the remedies is not in alphabetical order for ease of finding a remedy.

  5. I love this book and a few others of the Bach flower Remedies for dogs. It is a very useful book, easy to understand and it teaches you about bach flowers and there uses with animals. Bach flowers are very safe and I do rescue work and use it on dogs, cats, horses for many different ailments. It really has helped my animals. I also use them on me.

    thanks very much

    Kathy

1 comments about Guide to Skin and Haircoat Problems in Dogs.

  1. This is one of the more recent and thorough books on skin problems in dogs. Incidentally, skin problems are the most common problem for canines. The book is laid out like an encyclopedia by technical name of problem. It shows pictures of severe cases of many problems, and lists the most common problems by breed. The useful appendices allow you to cross reference your information to be sure you've uncovered all that you can.

Although I would never try to diagnose my own pet, while getting to the root of my Labrador's skin problem (which was a series of severe inhalant allergies), it helped me check up on my vet, ask intelligent questions, and find a fantastic specialist to finally relieve his symptoms. I have broken in the binder on this book as I refer to it constantly, and have many friends call to have me help them find information.

5 comments about Ultimate Marine Aquariums: Saltwater Dream Systems and How They Are Created.

  1. Ultimate Marine Aquariums: Saltwater Dream Systems and How They Are Created
This Saltwater How To Book was very informative and interesting. It's full of beautiful color photos. It's easy to read, understand and follow.
It's great for beginners as well as intermediate hobbyists such as myself. It has unique advice and point of views on certain topics. I got a lot of good ideas for setups and use in my own saltwater aquariums. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone looking to start a Saltwater Aquarium or expand their horizons for their current Marine setup!

  2. This book is very nice in content but poor picture quality, would be nice if the new edition or next volume of this title comes with more equipment and arquitectural photos and diagrams as well.

  3. This is an interesting picture book to compare how other aquarists keep their tank. However, most of the aquariums included in the book are pretty average in today's standard. There are numerous more matured and better looking tanks over the internet forums not to mention almost all tanks are in the USA only. Many of the pictures are also very blur. I would be very interested to buy a second book of the serie covering more "Ultimate" aquariums and with better picture quality.

  4. This is an excellent book for those that just want to look at some incredible marine aquariums or those looking for information on starting their own masterpiece.

  5. A nice book with some good information and lots of pictures. But only of real use if you are putting together a big system. Like over 200 gallons!
