2 comments about The Horse Nutrition Bible: The Comprehensive Guide to the Feeding of Your Horse.
- This is not a bad book, and if you have never really thought about what to feed your horse(s) it's a reasonable place to start, but I do have some issues w/ this book: 1.) while it does distinguish between different types of feed (i.e. hay, straight hard feed, etc.) it doesn't help you determine a feeding program beyond basic common sense (don't feed 'hot' horses lots of grain, offer lots of good pasture or hay, always have water available), and 2.) it does not tell you how to evaluate premade grain mixes, supplements, etc. to determine quality other than "buy from a reputable source".
As I said it's a great book if you're just getting into equine nutrition, and there are some truly helpful parts of the book like a chart explaining what is considered "light", "moderate", and "heavy" work for horses, which is great because when you're looking at a feed bag trying to figure out what they mean by those terms it can be confusing! it was also refreshing to see that someone that understands the evolution of equines and what that means for their feeding and digestion, and that it makes clear that every horse is an individual and should be fed as such, though it would have been nice to have a few types of feed or supplements recommended as good for general health, or for certain age groups (i.e. aged). also it was great to see a book that treated pony nutrition as separate from the full sized equine.
- The Horse Nutrition Bible is a comprehensive guide to horse nutrition and explores all the options involved in assessing a horse's nutritional needs and feeding it right, from chapters discussing introductory principles of feeding to the foundations of a horse's diet and the basic principles of feeding tactics and methods. Horse owners will want to keep The Horse Nutrition Bible on their reference shelf!

5 comments about Aquarium Fish (Pet Reference Books).
- This is by far my favorite book. Excellent quality pictures and references
- very good book for beginners in that it gives quick, direct,
and concise instruction on general care of a wide variety
of freshwater fish. outstanding photos so one can really
appreciate these fish. this book tries to cover so much that
it is forced to be too brief with its information on any one
group of fishes. excellent for quick references.
- This is actually a pretty good book if you want information on fish ie. breeding, care, disease treatment and prevention, characteristics, benefits, what fish are good with what fish. It has lots of pictures of freshwater fish with brief descriptions of each. There is a page or so of generalized information concerning each species and then pictures with a paragraph describing some of the specific subspecies.
It's really light on plant info. So if you want info on plants go find another book. Also if you are looking for information on how to start up or maintain an aquarium you'll need to go else where. All the information is pretty basic so this is definatly a beginner's book, it doesn't go into anything in any real depth. So I gave it three stars, it's not a must have by any means but it does provide some good helpful information.
- A reasonably good book for a beginner wanting to start an aquarium with a bit more thought than the usual community tank. The part on biotopes is not only interesting but is of great help fro the aquarist who would like to set up a tank/ecosystem which is as close to the real thing as possible. However, the 159 pages did leave the me "dissatisfied", I really could have done with a more detailed book. . If you want to keep/keep a planted aquuarium like I do, then you do need other books like Amano,s Nature Aquarium World series, and Barry James' Illustrated Guide.... for more details and ideas.

3 comments about Book of Whales.
- As far as the content of the book goes, it unfortunately is not appropriate for small children and there are limited pictures of whales. As a matter of fact there are no photographs of whales at all, only drawings. I was not aware of this at the time of purchase. I am sure the content will be more interesting when said child grows old enough to enjoy the numerous pages of information about various whales, I only hope he is still interested in them. The drawings are beautiful and descriptive though.
- I first recieved this book for X-mas in the early 80's. I was 10 and in love with whales (I still am). Great book with many details of all the species. The paintings/illustrations are very good, although may be out of date in portraying the true profile of whales.
I've the 1st edition hardback (1982) and since that time the knowledge has greatly grown about whales. However; Ellis goes into great detail with the historic (whaling era)/ scietific literature of the day.
For what it's worth - this is a great book and I highly recommend it to anyone with the slightest interest in whales. There is also the Book of Dolphins and Porpoises which is equally as fine as the Book of Whales.
- Ellis' book on sharks is probably better known than this book on whales, but both are great. The cornerstone of the book are his numerous paintings of a variety of whales.
Ellis also puts forth a good effort in describing what is know about this group of marine mammals. He addresses aspects of the biology, ecology, and behavior of whales. Though lacking references to the professional scientific literature, Ellis does a good job in introducing this group to the non-technical crowd. If you or a child of yours is interested in whales, this is a great book to have around. A highly recommended introduction to the whales.
