4 comments about Poodle Owners Medical Manual.

  1. This is an excellent medical reference book for poodle owners, but it is rather technical and clinical. Information is arranged alphabetically by topic, so it can sometimes be difficult to find what you are looking for if you don't already know the exact, sometimes medical, term. This is by no means a how-to guide for raising and caring for poodles, nor does it purport itself to be such a book. If your veterinarian mentions a specific condition or you hear about something afflicting another breed and wonder if it is something that can affect poodles (e.g., tracheal collapse), there is no better resource than this book. It also does a very good job of contrasting conditions and their effects on poodles of various sizes. When you know the condition, it is easy to learn about the symptoms; if you are observing symptoms in your poodle, though, it is not altogether easy to find what conditions the symptoms might point to.

Thus, as wonderful as this book is, it is not a practical guide for keeping your poodles healthy. For this reason, I do not believe this is a book that all poodles' humans should rush out and buy. A pet first aid book is much more practical and potentially life-saving, and the clinical presentation of the information in this medical manual will probably put off a good many people. Breeders will find this book much more useful than typical poodle owners will.

  2. The best book on Poodles I have found. Great book for new owners and those that love poodles. A must for anyone considering breeding. Informatiom is easy to read and understand. Contains all medical info in one book.

  3. I was very impressed with the depth and extensive subject matter of this medical manual. Presented in an easily readable format, it addresses everything from toxic household items to serious medical conditions. It was a wealth of information for me as a novice poodle owner and I feel would also be an excellent reference for the more experienced owner as well. I do wish that it was available in hard copy as my standard puppy found the cover to be quite tasty and I am therefore ordering another copy (which will be secured on a high shelf).

  4. Great reference book on understanding the problems that can arise with your Poodle and help you understand the different remedies that your vetenarian might suggest.

  1. I am on my second read through of Joan's classic treatise having just bought a new Newf puppy. The book remains indispensible. The only flaw would be the inordinate emphasis placed on the "in" NCA breeders and their animals.

The more even handed parts of the book deal with why you would want one of these great dogs and what you do once you realize you own a 130 pound couch potatoe.

  2. Simply the best book to date on this best of all breeds.

1 comments about Irish Setters Today.

  1. What an informative, enjoyable read! Eve's expertise in the breed shines through in all aspects of this book, from the acquisition of a promising show puppy, to feeding, breeding, health and coat care. A detailed section on showing explains the UK challenge certificate system, and an excellent comparision between the UK and USA standards offers the reader a broad description of the breed.

Eve's decision to fill the book full of personal insights and experiences offers the reader a very detailed and emotive look into life with an Irish Setter. Her love of the breed is geniune, and comes across clearly at all times, particularly in the small but heart-wrenching section entitled, "At the End of the Day."

The photos are beautiful, and capture the breed from many angles.

There is a detailed section on the training of the Setter in the field, which should be fascinating even to those who have no intention of ever hunting their dogs.

This book has become one of my favourites, and is a must-have for any serious enthusiast of the breed.

2 comments about Taming and Training Lovebirds.

  1. This book is titled taming and training lovebirds, yet only 6 of the 92 pages are dedicated to this topic! If I wanted a book on basic care, basic information or anything other than taming and training this may have been an informative book but since I have already read 15 other books (not exagerating) on those topics, this book was useless! Regardless of reading level this book does not provide what it promises and I highly do not recommend this book.

  2. The book had a lot of diferent chapters and beatiful pictures in it.It told what kind of fruit lovebirds can eat.It told about what kind of toys were dangerous to lovebirds and about nesting boxes. This is the best lovebird book I ever read.

5 comments about God's Dog: A Celebration of the North American Coyote.

  1. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book for several reasons:
I like Hope Ryden's writing style. She flows very easily and the book just "reads well". Additionally, it's easy to see that she loves and appreciates this beatiful wild creature for what it is - a part of creation, like all other animals, that needs to be allowed to take its proper place in the grand scheme of things.
Lastly, I think that she makes an excellent point concerning the coincidence of coyotes and the grazing of public lands. Western ranchers do have the right to make as much money as they can, for that matter everybody has that same right, but it is ugly and disgusting to see people in our supposedly liberal -minded society to have such blind hatred for a natural predator that does what it does simply to survive.
The point in her story that saddens and disgusts me the most is that money is so, so important to my fellow -countrymen that they will stop at nothing, including killing and exterminating, just for a better income. I only hope that one day these same people will take a more comprehensive look at the world and see how beautiful and wondrous and perfect it already is. Coyotes and all.

  2. The writings are scant on the coyote but this book answers many questions. First hand observations, natural history, the past history of man vs. coyote and photographs. There are many wonderful aspects to this book but what is most compelling is the way Hope Ryden shows the coyote as a resourceful, affectionate and intelligent creature rather than its familiar portrayal as a pest and killer. Much more than a field study this book is written from the heart.

  4. This is an excellent book. Hope Ryden spent years in Yellowstone and other places watching and learning about coyotes first-hand. The book reflects this, full of the charm, interest, and conflicts of watching coyotes and getting involved in their world- which inevitably means getting involved in the human world, and its mixed emotions towards these canines, as well.

  5. I read this book for the first time back in 1994 when I was working on an educational program about Coyotes. I felt like I had roamed with the Coyotes after reading it. For years I have been looking for this book, wondering if it was still in print. I'm anxious to read it again.

5 comments about The Chihuahua: An Owner's Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet.

  1. A lot of the book was based on any breed. In the training section, it was hard to understand what they were saying. I own two Chis of my own and thier behavior was not as nearly bad as the book described the attitude! I might as read a book about German Shepards!

  2. An excellent introduction to the breed. Informative, entertaining and well written. This book is part of the publisher's guide series for different breeds. Readers desiring an even more in-depth treatment of the Chihuahua itself should read Mrs. Terry's other book, The New Chihuahua.

  3. This book contained only the most basic information about Chihuahuas. Half the book's content addresses Chihuahuas in particular; the other half is a general guide to having a dog as a pet. It's a formula guide, and not a very good one at that. The photos are even substandard.

  4. This book gives you all the information you will need if you own or plan to own a Chihuahua. The absolute best Chihuahua book available.

  5. This is a good beginners book and a great companion book to Ms. Terry's other book, "The NEW Chihuahua", which I also have. It gives an overall "feel" for the breed from a beginner standpoint and the breed pictures are nice. Though I think there are way too many with other breeds used as examples. Well worth the purchase.
