2 comments about Great Pyrenees (KW Dog).

  1. While this book is not the most expensive on the market, it appears to have been created from a 'boiler-plate' of a series of canine books. Rather too much of it is not specific to Great Pyrenees. We have owned several Great Pyrenees and, from time to time, need information from reference sources. This book does not fall in to that category. It can be classified as "Read through it once and then never refer to it again".

There are several other Great Pyrenees books on the market that more adequately describe the requirements of owning one of these large dogs. Andrew Jonson's attempt to address all matters relating to Great Pyrenees falls well short of the mark.

This is not a book to recommend to potential or existing owners. Probably okay for children

  2. For the price, this book covers enough of the basics of the breed to give you an idea if the dog is worth a more-detailed research. The 'care guide' section (which takes up about 1/3 of the book) is very general, it can apply to any dog. This book alone is not enough for any serious research. If you're seriously considering the Great Pyrenees as a pet you will need a better reference book, like The New Complete Great Pyrenees, also found via Amazon.

5 comments about How to Teach Your Old Dog New Tricks.

  1. I'm a veterinarian, very involved in behavior training, because that's what keeps my canine patients alive. I've found that if I can get clients involved in teaching a dog who has found out that learning is fun, that dog stands a much better chance of staying alive of becoming an indispensable member of their family. I've checked out numerous trick training books, and this is hands down the best. It's focused, breaks the tricks down into easy, understandable steps, and is written by someone who knows and loves dogs. Bravo!

  2. This is a very clearly written book that shows step by step how to make your dog impress people with how "smart" it is. The best thing about training your dog to do some of these tricks is that the basics sit, stand and stay also get transmitted. If you have a dog with behavior problems, once you start them out with this book everything else will follow. The book itself shows this with it's cross-reference at the end of each trick letting you know which tricks will be easy to teach in the future based on the foundation of just one trick!

This book would be great for puppies as well.

  3. I taught my field spaniel to shake, speak, rollover, beg, bow, crawl on her belly, climb ladders, open and close doors, etc. Also, using the techneques in the book, I made-up other tricks. Now she can slp-you-five and jump and twist in midair.

  4. My Scottish Terrier, Sgt. Pepper, is currently working on the balance the milk-bone on your nose, and rollover trick.

At this point we're having so much fun gazing into one another's eyes over the milk bone, that we don't much care whether he learns it or not.

    This is great fun!

  5. This wonderful book is lavishly illustrated, and takes a step-by-step approach that results in a over-all well-trained dog. Easy to follow and a fun read.

3 comments about Training Your Dog (101 Essential Tips).

  1. This small, well-illustrated and attractive book is a great quick-reference guide to training your dog or puppy. I found this book to be wonderful to have on hand for children and 1st-time dog owners. It is not particularly for the "old pro" at dog raising, but I still found it useful. It is especially great to give to the spouse who doesn't think having a puppy a good idea (and who won't take the time to read a more involved book), or to the child who is eager to raise your dog but doesn't have the first idea how to go about it. As in ALL DK books, WELL DONE!

  2. I was really not impressed with this book at all. I just got a new puppy and was eager to read it. It was VERY short, and I felt as if I was in third grade again, i.e. the book DOES tell you about howling. It says to leave the dog with a favorite treat, or something that you have rubbed on your hands. GIVE ME A BREAK! If you like short books (I read it in 15 minutes) than this is the book for you. I would only recommend getting this if you have another book to accompany it. The price was right and I keep it for a quick reference...

  3. I bought this book when I got my first Puppy and it is great tool to help a new owner through the first few months of housebreaking and training. Very readable and to the point. Great value too- a lot of book for your buck!

1 comments about Manual of Pack Transportation.

  1. Daly & Scott have produced a fine book about the US Army's use of Mules. While the book is quite technical, the detail is well explained and easy to follow. To enjoy this book, it would help the potential reader to know a bit about mules and animal transport. As a history, the book provides a good overview of the historical organisation of mule transportation; it discusses the South American origins of mule transportation, and the well chosen photographs are also informative. The book lacks discussion of mule pack transportation in World War Two - it would have been good if this was discussed.

3 comments about Pythons and Boas.

  1. I am guessing that this book is just old, so not going along with todays knowledge, and this is just another edition. One definitely can find some information in it, but I did not like it. Another positive is its visually attractive issue.

  2. Pythons and Boas have long been among the most fascinating of snakes, and with continued encroachment upon their habitat they are now also among the most threatened. Pythons and Boas provides an up to date look at the Boidae, with emphasis being placed on the boids as threatened animals whose futures lie with increased captive breeding by concerned hobbyists. Every genus is covered, from the largest pythons to the smallest wood snakes, with summaries of what is known of their natural history and care in captivity. A special chapter spotlights methods of breeding boas and pythons in captivity. This volume includes the only available modern checklist of the species and subspecies of living boids, as well as a simple key to the genera. Heavily illustrated, with 111 color photos and numerous black and white illustrations and maps.

  3. This is great for a beggining pet owner. It has over 100 color photos of different types of snakes and also pictures and diagrams of afflictions. It covers everything from history, nomenclature, care and breeding. There is even a guide to help you determine what type of snake (proper name and origin) you have. Since this is a book on both boas and pythons, it doesn't spend much time or detail on either. Perhaps it's only shortcoming was that there is not much, if anything about IBD (Inclusion Body Disorder)that I have found in other books. Also, there was very little time spent on treating any of the diseases, except how to recognise them, and generally how they are treated. Otherwise, this is a great reference book and good reading for those that wish to know more about boas and pythons.

4 comments about The Book of My Pet.

  1. I wish I had copies of this book for every companion animal I ever had! Right now, I have three copies I'm keeping memories in -- one for each of my three dogs. I will be sure to purchase a new copy for each new furry friend that I adopt in the future. The "memory joggers" are very helpful while making entries from a pet's birth to crossing the Rainbow Bridge.

  2. We recently got our first dog, a cute little black mix, named Blackie, for our young boys Welsey and Paul. They will probably have many pets in their lives but since they are only 3 and 5 now they will not remembers many of the special moments of their first pet Blackie. My husband and I are using The Book of My Pet to capture the life of Blackie so our boys can look back on the joys and responsibilities of caring for their first dog and share it with their kids when they grow up. Great book idea for pet lovers.

  3. I know lots of pet owners who would get into this. The design is handsome, not overly cutesy like some. The memory-jogging prompts are v. good...some funny, some reflective, some factual. I like the way they are organized into chapters with subsections: 1. How to Write Your Pet's Story 2. Starting Out (Getting Ready, How We Met, Family Tree) 3. The First Year (Settling In, Getting to Know My Pet, Making & Breaking the Rules) 4. The Prime of Life (Personality, Pleasures, Habits & Health, Talents) 5. The Advanced Years (Winding Down, Maturing Ways) 6. Saying Good-bye (The Passing, Looking Back)

  4. When I was a child and then a young mother, keeping a "baby book" of those born into the family was common. It was a way of documenting the events of the life of this important person and celebrating his/her uniqueness. The Book of My Pet offers that kind of possibility for the beloved animals who become significant parts of our families. This book evokes those memories you might forget by asking thoughtful questions in many categories. The whole family can participate in creating this remembrance at anytime in the life of your pet. It is also possible to mount pictures in the book to make it a visual as well as verbal story of your shared life with this mysterious, special being. I am using it to tell the story of Gray, our cat who has graciously taken us into her life.
