2 comments about ROUGH & SMOOTH COLLIES (Book of the Breed).
- This is a good reference, with lots of photos (unfortunately all black & white) as well as info about coat colors and conformation. It focuses a lot on bloodlines and champions, which is of more interest to the breed/show crowd than it is to me as a pet owner.
- The Rough and the Smooth Collie are given equal status in this superbly illustrated book. Both are covered from puppy selection to training, grooming, showing, breeding, health care, and working abilities. photos / 1993 / UK

3 comments about The Miniature Pinscher: Reigning King of Toys.
- I have read this book twice, and refer to it as needed. It certainly outlined the characteristics of the breed and all have proven to be true. If there is a downside to this book it is all the information about showing, since my Min Pin is a pet. But then even that provided some good information.
I liked the book and would buy it again.
- I recommend anyone thinking of buying a min pin, read this book first. They are not just your average house dog, and this book tells you several things you should take into consideration. Although I purchased it after buying a min pin, it really helped me learn about their history, nature, showing qualifications, as well as other things.
- This is definitely not a cut and paste dog book. Most everything you could wish to know is included in this book...the history of the dog, it's personality traits, gait diagrams, obstacle track training (!), and famous past show dogs. Plenty of references for further reading, pictures, and some weblinks. The most impressive thing for me was the pain the author goes through to make sure you know what you're getting into purchasing a Min Pin. The breed is high maintenance and very high strung. A cherished pet, but comparable to a toddler who never grows up. It is an important fact. My Min Pin is a rescue from a family that merely felt the breed was 'cute.' This is an excellent book for those who already own, but should be required for those considering a first-time Min Pin.

5 comments about The Guide to Owning a Rat.
- This book is full of information but unfortunately gives some very poor advice for any rat owner. Pine and cedar will both cause respiratory problems in rats, which can lead to ill health and secondary infections. Also, many of the pictures in this book are of mice.
If you buy this book, please keep in mind - no pine or cedar bedding for rats! Much better is The Rat (An Owner's Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet) by Ginger Cardinal (Howell Book House) or Rats! (A Fun & Care Book) by Debbie Ducommun (Bowtie Press) .
- The author knows what she is talking about. You can tell that she has had a lot of experience with her own rats, has done the necessary research, has talked with other experts in the care and breeding of rats, and presents the information so that everyone can understand it. For the reviewer who commented on the "suggestion" that pine shavings be used, it should be understood that there is a lot of controversy about the use of cedar/pine shavings and when the book was published in 1996, the "experts" were still having their discussions about the subject. As far as the few photos of mice, it is unfortunate that the publishers did include them but that does not lessen the impact of the valuable information in the book. I learned a lot about rats from this book, which has more information in it than many other books on the subject. It's a great book, and people just starting out with pet rats will find it to be a great reference, one they will refer to many times.
- This book is full of bad advice. She recommends using Pine which is almost as bad for rats as Cedar is! And some of the pictures in the book are of mice, not rats. ...
- I found this great for me when I got my rats since i knew little or nothing about them. Now that i have had them a few years and have gone online for info. I can tell you, it's a great guide for NEWBIES but I also found there to be as much info online.
If i read it now, i would say tell me something I dont know. But, if you have never owned one of the cutties..this is the bible of rats
- If you know nothing about owning a rattie then this is the book for you. I knew essentially nothing so this was a great book. I must say, If you already have read up on owning a rat on the internet then you already know everything in this book.
I feel the internet had as much if not more info. But the price was right and incase my computer goes down, it's helpful

2 comments about Puppy Care & Training: An Owner's Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet.
- This addition to Howell's "Your Happy Healthy Pet" series is filled with information, advice, and full-color photographs to help the new puppy owner take proper care of his or her pet. It covers such topics as What Your Puppy Needs, Puppy-Proofing Your Home, Keeping Your Puppy Healthy, Training Your Puppy, and much more.
- Before I adopted my puppy, I bought several puppy care books, including this one. This book was by far the best. In the section covering "what to expect from your growing pup" the author tells us what to expect from our puppy at different ages throughout puppyhood. She was right on point. I lived by this book when my puppy was growing, and referred back to it when I adopted my second dog. There is also a wonderful section about healthcare and first aid which helps us deal with day to day healthcare issues, and helps identify which matters require a vet's care and which ones can be taken care of at home. I refer back to this book quite often. I have also purchased this book as a gift for several friends and family members as each took a puppy into their family. This book is an indispensible tool in raising a puppy.
