2 comments about The Guide to Owning a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (Guide to Owning A...).
- This book has a lot of nice photos but is otherwise pretty generic, except for the history of the breed. While looking this book over, I got the feeling that almost any breed could be substituted making it more of a general dog book to me. I much prefered "Your Happy Healthy Pet Cavalier King Charles Spaniel by Norma Moffat. She is a breeder and exhibitor and you can tell, she really knows the breed. Her book is also a hard cover and a good value.
- I am getting a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and ordered a number of different books. I found this one to be the least helpful. In fact - at one point the author says that Cav nails are easy to trim because you can always see the quick with their light nails - but I believe other books have said that the darker Cavaliers have dark nails. That seems like a pretty big error. I would not recommend this Cavalier book.

3 comments about Akita (Kennel Club Dog Breed Series).
- Good book tells u alot about the breed is well written i give it 5 stars
- Save your money and look for a new resource. All this proves is that anyone that can't write can get published. If Ms. Andrews had a true love of the Breed, she would not flitter about from breed to breed.
- I bought this book because I wanted to learn more about the Akita- and this book was perfect for that. It's very informative, and I learned a lot more about the breed- stuff that I had never heard before, like how there's more than 1 'type' of Akita. This book was also appropriatley discouraging for people who are interested in the breed but are probably not well suited for it.
This book is a good buy if you're interested in an introduction to the Akita because it offers you training, feeding, breeder and showing tips, as well as a very thorough history of the breed.

- This is very cute for those who enjoy dogs. Also very good for children since there is no reading--just pictues.
- Michael Nastasi has an amazing talent for photographing dogs. His photos are playful, heartwarming and beautiful...you feel as though you've been given a glimpse into the soul of each of his canine subjects. If you love dogs, know someone who does, or simply appreciate outstanding photography, I highly recommend this book!

5 comments about Success with Cichlids from Lake Malawi & Tanganyika.
- This book has some good photos and provides a light overview for people that are new to the hobby. However, if you are new to aquariums you should not try to care for these fish. For anyone experienced this book doesn't provide much useful information. I was trying to get information on breeding African Cichlids and this book provided no useful information that subject.
- I just want to leave a notation for all who get this book. BE CAREFUL OPENING PAGES! The photos on each page are actually on photographic paper! This makes each photo excellent in detail and color, but this book needs to have pages turned with the care of a photo album, and not the casual nature of a book.
- Despite all the other bad reviews I think this is a great book to dive into African Cichlids. I have owned an aquarium maintenance service for years and have had only one african cichild tank. I bought a bunch of them and threw them all in a 55 gallon tank. It looked great until the fish grew up. After a year or so I only had a couple fish left, most killed by a large pseudotrophus sp. This book explained why and I was finally able to understand these fish. The book goes into species compatibility and their social behavior and explains why you mix certain species, male/female ratios, numbers of each species required, size of tank and how to keep aggressive ones. I feel the topic is so vast with over 1500 species that no one book can cover everything. I'm finding the most difficult part of African Cichlids is the scientific names - some are very difficult to say much less knowing which ones you can house together! If you have had aquariums in the past and know nothing about African Cichlids I would recommend this as your first book! It really informs the reader of the broad overview of what you are getting into and the problems associated with it. It leaves you informed and, if interested, wanting to buy another book or two, specifically one with photos of all the species like Pablo Tepoot's "Pictoral Guide".
- More time is spent on discussing basic aquarium set-up and care, than on Malawi Cichlids. Must have had commercial sponsers, they are mentioned throughout. Other than a beginner at cichlids, nothing much new to be learned. Scientific names are outdated, but in the fast changing world of Malawi Cichlids that's not surprising. Better be up on your metric system, there's not an inch, foot, yard, pound or gallon in the book!
- I felt as though I was reading an info mercial. While it is nice to have info on product availability it was more than I wanted to sort through. I also found it not well organized. Cichlid identification for the purpose of appropriate care and breeding is daunting enough without adding more confusion.

1 comments about Freshwater Aquariums (Aquamaster).
- Though it doesn't cover some aspects in depth, it covers things overlooked by other books. Interesting descriptions and good recomendations: aquarium themes regarding fish and their natural enviroment, aquarium plants characteristics and needs (highly recommended to prevent algae when you place an aquarium near a window), notes on fish "hardness" and temper. Plenty of full color pictures all over the book. It worth the price. I also recommend Community Fish from the same author as a companion reading.

1 comments about Maltese.
- This authors of this book really needed the assistance of a professional writer! There is a lot of general information, and the specific information that is included is rather dated (as can be expected; Barbara Bergquist has been involved with the Maltese fancy for about forty years!)
I am reading all I can about Maltese, and suggest that serious fanciers (or would-be serious fanciers) get The Complete Maltese by Cutillo, that people who want a good overview of the breed get Howell Book House's The Essential Maltese, and that both get Dog Fancy's Popular Breed Series publication about Maltese (at larger pet stores or www.dogfancy.com).
