5 comments about Pack of Two: The Intricate Bond Between People and Dogs.
- This is the best memoir an animal lover, dogs especially, will ever read. Have no fear; there is no sad ending here, only an in-depth investigation and revelation of the unique and beautiful relationships we have with the dogs and other pets in our lives.
If you want to know more about the why and how behind these incredible and often (as was the case in Knapp's book) live-saving relationships read the book shown below. I enjoyed it, too, and it provides some surprising insights and valuable, usable information from. It discusses the origin and comprehensive nature of our relationships with animals, providing scientifically sound information on the love we share and the roles we play in each other's lives: The Powerful Bond between People and Pets: Our Boundless Connections to Companion Animals (Practical and Applied Psychology)
- Before Marley there was Lucille. This is a funny, informative memoir which will, alas, will empty your tear ducts. Knapp was a terrific writer and what a tragedy it is to have lost her. Especially at such a young age.
- maybe like some people here says this is not a book about training, in the kind of manual to accomplish your dog to do some stuff; neither is the kind of book like the Konrad Lorenz, 'When the man find the dog' or like Desmond Morris about the same theme. And one has to be thankful for it. This book is about the core of the relation, the love and the bond, you can have with your dog. Maybe something not easily understood to the non-dog passerby, nevertheless for us the dog lovers is a tender colection of ideas and reflections on the subject. Even so, there is a research behind it, and some hard facts coming with a decent book list at the end. If sometimes lacks of discipline like some other person says here, well, i really like my love affairs without boot camp, laws and restriction, and even when my dog is perfectly trained, I really like to spoil myself letting me love her without boundaries and restraint, she fills every aspect of my life, and she makes me... human. Long live to Caroline Knapp, and now she is not here anymore, lets laugh and cry with she and lucille, and share that perfect aeternal bond with our dogs. ...And yes my dog is lying here in my bed, quite undisciplined but warm and perfect... if anyone complains, I would not change my bed with 'Amelia' for any human of any form whatsoever.... guau guau guau
- This is my first book review and, WOW! did I pick a great one to start off with.
You'll have to pardon me if I'm over-enthusiastic with my praise, but I'm telling it as it is.
From page one, I totally related to this lady (Caroline Knapp), from the time she was 'just thinking' about getting a dog, to going to the Dog pound to 'just look', to 'should I adopt or not?' to 'well, maybe' to finally getting the pooch.
I think I even got the same Mutt breed that she adopted.
The Pound informed me that my Sara was a GSD/Mix. Ms Knapp adopted a Shepherd/Mix. She says this is Dog Pound code for
"We really don't know."
I became so engrossed with the human/dog connection we have with our soul mates, that I looked Caroline Knapp up on GOOGLE.
Sad, it is to say, I found out that she died of cancer at the age of 42.
Her loyal companion, Lucille, was there at her bedside, faithful to the end.
- This book is for anyone who wants to consider reasons why they love what they love.
The author's independent view gives the type of different perspective many of us read books for. If she was only super smart, & told us primarily things we already knew, that would probably not be worth reading. Ms. Knapp is so much more.
I admire Ms. Knapp's intellect, uncommon perspective, & incredible focus on a particular subject matter. Anyone who reads this book is going to understand more about why certain people go to such amazing lengths, and spend so much time, money, and energy on their dogs. Her writing style is great. Her lack of repitition in her vocabulary, sentence structure, and thought presentation is remarkable. This book is not just about dogs. It is an interesting read for people who want to understand the thought processes of people who: 1) love dogs, or 2) are neurotic, or 3) have human relationship commitment issues, or 4) struggle with their human family.
Ms. Knapp's focus & examination of the ideas and perceptions that can lead to the creation of strong bonds with dogs is fascinating. She gives the reader a greater appreciation, like a wine expert might teach someone more to appreciate about wine.
Ms. Knapp loved dogs for their tolerance, faithfulness, lack of artificial baggage, and accepting accomodation. She found qualities in her dog that she did not perceive in the humans she encountered.
She asserts that relationships with dogs are occasionally a substitute for other things; but more often, they are beautiful on their own merits and do not find value by being a substitute for something else.
Dogs can't use words. They are beautiful because they must learn to listen and communicate to the people around them largely based on non-verbal cues.
Very sadly, Ms. Knapp died at too young of an age. If she were alive, I'd write her a letter of gratitude and ask her many questions.

5 comments about Equine Massage: A Practical Guide (Howell Equestrian Library).
- This is a very informative book, detailed in every way. The only problem is understanding the parts being I am a layman. But with much study I believe this book will help me recognize and determine the proper procedure to take to better comfort my mare.
- One of those timeless treasures that will be referred to over and over and over.
- Very easy to understand and follow. I am interested in becoming certified and this was a big help in showing me what will be expected and give me a jump start on learning anatomy.
- This is a great book that has become invaluable to me. It gives a good round view of massage, from anatomy to practical exercises and stretches you can do with your horse.
I think this book covers everything a horse owner needs to know about massage.
- This book is very good. My horse has back problems and I found the book helpful as to how to massage him so he feels better. The book has alot of great information and I would recommend it highly.

5 comments about Dogs I Have Met: And the People They Found.
- Ken's stories remind me of Dr. James Herriot's awesome tales about his life as a country vet in Britain. (All Creatures Great and Small, and others)
Ken's books are also heartwarming and for anyone who loves animals.
- Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/RIJ2ZYSOJDATB This isn't really a review, it's just the only way I could find to share this great video that was created at a party I had for the release of Dogs I Have Met. Among the many dogs who attended: Trap Jack and Dag, both of whom are featured in the book.
- and an American Pit Bull Terrier lover in particular, I have a special place in my heart for Ken Foster and his experiences. He is not afraid to stand up for what he believes and take corrective action for injustices he observes. He is a patriot for the APBT breed. This book is very well written and brought tears to my eyes on more than one occasion. Bravo, Ken!
- Ken Foster has again produced an entertaining look at the people he has encountered in his interesting dog-filled life. His writing style is unique and one to be emulated. The small volume is a quick read. American Pit bulls have a great advocate in him as he gently but forcefully defends them.
- I truly appreciated this book specifically because of the strong focus on decriminalizing the american pit bull breed. It is so sad that this wonderful, loving breed of dog has been so persecuted due solely to the inhumanity of humans. Dogs are one of God's greatest creations, and humans have exploited, abused, and mistreated them to such unbelieveable levels. Thanks to the author for his wonderul work. It is a short easy read, but shares valuable insight.

5 comments about Everything Dachshund Book: A Complete Guide To Raising, Training, And Caring For Your Dachshund.
- This book is a surprisingly excellent view of the Dachshund World. It is very highly recommended for anyone contemplating the purchase of a dachshund or who has a dachshund and wondered "Why DO they do that?" (or "Why DON'T they do that?")
- This is a great book! It is the most comprehensive Dachshund book I've read. I've read it cover to cover and have referred back to it several times while training my new miniature dachshund puppy. It covers everything from selecting the right puppy/dog to showing your dog. It is filled with great housebreaking training tips, solutions to everyday problems, first aid tips, and even how to handle a hard to train dog. It is a fantastic source of information for any dog owner, but especially the dachshund owner.
- This book covers every possible aspect of owing a doxy. It spells out everything that can go wrong so that people will not buy the dog and then months later give it to the pound.
The first chapter describes the lifetime cost, $20,000, and the several hours per day of your time that is required to keep poochie healthy and happy.
It then goes into great detail on finding the proper breeder. Then taking the dog home and holding hands with it hours per day until it is happy in your house.
Socializing the dog with all sorts of people and other pets.
Preventing bad behavior.
Traveling. And on and on.
- Wonderful book and very insightfull information for new owners of Dachshunds. Can't go wrong :)
- I love this book on Dachshunds! It gives me the widest variety of information I could need. It has helped me learn so much about the new puppy I adopted & as I read it I continue to learn more everyday. I would highly recommend this book to anyone caring for & wanting to raise a responsible, loving dog. It covers everything...seriously. Buy it if you care for a loving dachshund & want to learn how to raise him to be a great dog.

5 comments about James Herriot's Dog Stories: Warm And Wonderful Stories About The Animals Herriot Loves Best.
- James Herriot's Favorite Dog Stories is a short but delightful book written by the world famous veterinarian. It is beautifully illustrated by Lesley Holmes.
This book consists of ten stories from Herriot's previous books that feature dogs that he has treated over the years. It's difficult to pick a favorite as they all have amazing personalities. There is Brandy, who is such a scrounger that he gets his tongue stuck in tin cans that he digs out of the trash can. TrickiWoo, a Pekingese, picks winning horses at the races. And Gyp, an epileptic sheepdog, only barked once in his entire life. Although all the dogs have special characteristics, it is obvious that it would take a veterinarian with compassion and humor to see that these animals are more than just pets.
I truly enjoyed Favorite Dogs Stories. However, if you've already read Herriot's other books (which I haven't), you will find that they're repeats.
- All of James Herriot's books are great. This is another one. All dogs are unconditional love on four legs.
Stephen Richey author of The Galley
- I drive an hour each way to and from work, and this enjoyable book made the time go by quickly.
- This is an exceptional book of true stories from the author's actual experiences... a heart-warming book that will bring laughter, tears, and a thorough enjoyment for readers of all ages.
- I read his books as a teen and loved them. Bought the whole set for my grandsons, [teens]. They laughed until they cried. [so did I].

5 comments about Parrot Training: A Guide to Taming and Gentling Your Avian Companion (Pets).
- The descriptions and pictures and great is this book. Might get a little complicated sometimes but glad I bought it!
- This book was a godsend for me. I was blessed with a beautiful 19 year old parrot that was given to me. Fortunately I found this book. It addressed all of our problems. I'd recommend this book to anyone looking for advice.
- This is a great book dealing with parrot training. People can find any information for various problems relating to parrot behaviorism.
- I'm so glad I purchased this book. It gave me the information I need to raise a happy, well-adjusted bird. The information on body language was quite helpful.
- there is a lot of information in this book.

4 comments about Bulldogs For Dummies (For Dummies (Pets)).
- This book was very helpful with our new bulldogs. It shares their history, health, behavior, attitude- it covers everything! It even has helpful hints I wasn't expecting to find! I would recomend to any new bulldog owner or to someone who is interested in owning bulldogs.
- great book. had everything and more than i would ever want to know about my dog. i refer to it over and over again. i love the little stories and tips that are littered throughout the book.
- I thought the book was just "okay." I was disapointed because it didnt seem to be specifically written about the English Bulldog breed - many comments were just general helpful hints on how to train dogs, etc with just a few known bulldog specific comments like how the breed is prone to overheat. I dont even think the writer, Susan Ewing has owned or does own an english bulldog - her credits read other breeds of dogs she has owned and english bulldog was not listed. I'd get another book or do research online. I've read several bulldog books and still found the best stuff on breeders' websites. Good luck!
- I liked this book. It was easy to read and I went thru it quickly. I bought several bulldog books and although this wasn't my favorite one I did like the info in it. The dummy line of books are pretty good and this one is too.

- This is one of the most beautiful books that I have seen of horses. Very well done. If you know somebody that loves horses, this is the book to buy.
- The best art photography I've seen.. A must for horse lovers.
- The photo book Spirit Horses is an must for every horse lover. The photo's are incredible and create or catch a mistical atmosphere as I have seldom seen. The captions are inspiring. Not a book to read but one to pick up once a week for half an hour meditation. Highly recommended
- Misleading - Linda Kohanov only wrote the Intro.
Repetitive photographs and sparse text.

4 comments about Shih Tzu For Dummies.
- This is an excellent book for the first time shihtzu owner. Has instructions on how to groom your own puppy, etc.
- Exellent book for people who know very little and who desire to know more about the Shih Tzu breed. It covers everything from puppyhood to senior citizen. I am very happy with this book.
- I ordered this book after bringing home my 6-week old puppy, and it has helped me tremendously. I have one other book which talks a lot about the history and temperament of the breed, but this book is a lot more useful for everyday knowledge. I love the suggestions for getting the dog used to daily grooming so that he get used to being handled. My puppy is already starting to nip at my hands and feet, and this book is helping me respond to this and other undesirable behavior.
This is my first dog, and I had not a clue about how to housebreak or socialize him. With this book, I feel a lot more confident in my ability to raise a friendly family pet.
- This book was a great introduction for me, who has never owned a dog before. It teaches you about Shih Tzus, but also about dogs in general.
The techniques work, and I feel that I am now smarter than my puppy. A dummy no more!

5 comments about Positive Perspectives: Love Your Dog, Train Your Dog.
- I have had dogs all my life, and though I thought I knew dogs pretty well and how to train them, I learned a lot from this book. I recognized that some of my methods were out of date. I tried these new and improved methods on a new dog I just got who is 1.5 years old. It has been amazing how quickly our bond grew from these both sensible and respectful methods of teaching. I learned not to be quite so forceful with my new friend. I learned that being Alpha in the pack did not mean having to intimidate my dogs. I highly recommend it for those who are not getting the behaviors they want and need from their dog companions, and also, for those who are considering getting or just have added a new dog of any age to the family. Knowledge like this can really save many if not most of these beautiful and loving animals from being dumped at our shelters or elsewhere.
- I am a rescuer, and I have purchased many copies of this book to give to new adopters-- and I ALWAYS recommend it to every dog owner. This book offers great instruction for training obedience-- AND lots of useful information on dog behavior.
- This book goes over the basics of puppy and dog training using positive methods. It's a great introduction to positive training methods and describes how to teach your dog a number of important behaviors. It has definitely helped me train my new puppy. My only complaint is that there are a few training descriptions that don't really tell you how to finish the exercise with your dog. For example, the book goes over the difference between "wait" and "stay" and describes how to do both, but focuses on "stay." It didn't really tell how you tell your dog he can stop the "wait." I'm going to be looking for more information to help me continue training my puppy, but I still would definitely recommend it for anyone new to dog ownership.
- this is a good book when you first get your puppy and i really like her techniques but i was looking for more tricks.
- No matter what breed or age your dog is, this book can help you train your furry friend. A must have for dog owners and professional trainers alike.
