  1. I loved this book! It is whimsical, nonsensical, funny and beautifully drawn. You will find yourself identifying with these cats.

5 comments about Extraordinary Dogs: Inspirational Stories of Dogs with Disabilities.

  1. As a mom to a dachshund in a dog cart ("Frankie, the Walk 'N Roll Dog")I could relate with everyone of these stories in Joyce's book. Disabled animals truly deserve a chance and Joyce proved that over and over again with these truly, heart warming, inspirational stories. I found myself laughing and then crying. My heart is so happy for all the animals in this book that were given a chance at life. Joyce proves in this book that animals with disabilities can absolutely live a life of quality. We just have to give them the chance.

  2. Joyce Darrell is a saint and her work as a volunteer rescuer of dogs with disabilities should be applauded. EXTRAORDINARY DOGS is a deeply moving read and I hope that people will choose to adopt more of these wonderful creatures after learning that they, too, can lead happy, healthy, and normal lives just like any other dog. Incredibly heartfelt and highly recommended!

  3. I just received this book yesterday and I'm already half way thru it. The stories are great. I have a blind dog and I feel better about some of my struggles. You're on your own when these things happen. But I am glad to see that there are lots of dog lovers out there that refused to give up just because their dog was disabled in some way.

    Thanks for the inspirations!

  4. Overcoming the hardship and time-consuming nature of having a disability is able to be done if one fails to see or think of themselves as being disabled (an attitude that allows moving on). This book shows us that pets are able to do this - they can move on with the help of people and live a full, happy life in spite of physical hardships. We should work to learn from our companion animal friends and follow some of the lessons they teach us in this book.

The built environment handicaps us, whether we have disabilities or not. We should also work to build a handicapped-free environment that is accessible to everyone. We need more work done on designing and building handicap-free spaces for people and pets.

"Extraordinary Dogs" teaches us more about ourselves and how our pets help us, than about how we help our pets. It is through helping them that our lives become richer. This book has taught me that the symbiotic relationship between people and their pets, especially pets with disabilities (which have greater dependencies), is extraordinarily valuable.

  5. In today's "throw a-way" society, I found Extraordinary Dogs to be a breath of fresh air!
It's an enlightening, inspiring and heartwarming read.
I ordered three more books to share with friends and the patients in the waiting room at my office!

5 comments about Holistic Animal Handbook: A Guidebook to Nutrition, Health and Communication.

  1. I bought this book on a whim after reading about animal communication. Each subject that the book covers could of course be (and probably is currently) the full subject for yet another book, but it was a great intro to animal communication, raw feeding and the Bach flower essences. I read it in a day and was intrigued enough to buy another of the authors' books. Mind you, this is a book for people who are quite open-minded and seriously into their companion animals. Not at all traditional ways of taking care of animals, but certainly something worth looking into if you can open your mind a bit.

  2. I honestly don't have the time to read all the books I buy within the time period that Amazon sends out the survey, so I will say this review is based on some sheepish quick skimming of the first few chapters. As I read the excerpts, I am getting sucked into reading this a bit more... of course, the book IS for the demographic of pet owners that are willing to spend $40 on a 17lbs bag of cat food. =)

P.S. I recommend Innova, but the NaturaPet company has several good lines. Regular pet stores carry some organic lines, after this brand (special pet stores) Newman Organics is the next in quality, followed by the By Nature and Naturals in regular Pet stores.

    [...].

  3. This is a useful book with information not available elsewhere which gives you info not only on a healthy, natural approach to feeding animals, but specifics for different breeds. We are killing our pets with dried kibble, and this book tells you not only why this is so, but gives you alternatives.

  4. The authors of this book basically think that they are animal psychics. Red alert! Right away that tells you something...their whole book is filled with nonsense about communicating with your pet telepathically and teaching holistic care and feeding. They also talk about herbal remedies, which was somewhat interesting, but, thinking realistically, I wouldn't use them.

Overall, this book has very little substance to it. There was not much at all to be gleaned from it. I knew most of the information already without reading this book. To sum it all up: it was a thin read, and very disappointing at that.

  5. This book is a great resource for pet lovers to use in dealing with any behavioral problems their furry friends display. I would recommend it to anyone that owns cats, dogs, birds, or horses - tons of good information on what makes these lovely animals tick.

Based on the recommendations in the book, I bought "Rescue Remedy", and use it every now and then on my little dolls, Gigi and Lulu. It quickly soothes and relaxes them - works great! I wish I'd found this stuff before! This book also discusses bach flower essences, and which ones might be best for your animals, based on their behavioral problems. Gigi used to be a holy terror, and she's become the sweetest cat since I started retraining her.

Definitely check this book out if you are a pet lover! Another great herbal resource to try - prescription for nutritive healing, herbal meds. I will never take non herbal medicine or go to a non-holistic doctor again, if I can help it.

1 comments about Greyhound: An Owner's Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet.

  1. We bought this book, because we are looking for the perfect breed to join our household. So whenever we fancy a certain breed we like to get a book about it. This inexpensive little book gives an exellent first time greyhoundowner guidebook. Not only does it give you tips how to housetrain an ex-racer, but gives good and sound advise for training, feeding and dogcare in general. It gives examples, little stories and facts to make the read more intersting. Did you know that Bo Derek owned Greyhounds? Daniel Braun Stern' book made us read (and buy) several books about sighthounds and the adoption of retired racehounds.

You will need more indepth information later on, but if you get this book to make up your mind - in that case it is a very good book to buy!

2 comments about A New Owner's Guide to Weimaraners (New Owner's Guide To...).

  1. We just brought home a weimaraner puppy. This book is good for basics but did not go into specifics in regards to the breed. For example, the training section of the book was very simple, basic instruction. No specifics in that portion, nor did I feel that other sections had too much detail. On the plus side, the section on the breed's history was very informative. Good pictures.

  2. We are first time owners of a Weimaraner Puppy. This was excellent for us, it covers the dogs origin, characteristics, feeding & bathing, housebraking & training, health care, dental care, traveling, behavior, plus what to look for in a show dog and sports companion. I really learned a lot with this book. The only thing it does not cover is breeding her (it does cover what to look for in a good breeder).
